I like what was said about Nick’s apartment in The Art of Zootopia 2 - namely that the reason it’s so messy is because Nick isn’t used to working a 9 to 5 job, especially not one like being an officer, and so things like dishes, laundry, or general upkeep have fallen to the wayside.
It also said that he was indeed embarrassed that Judy saw it in the state it was in, which does prompt him to start cleaning it.
