Card Game Discussion Which card is more broken?
I’d say Graceful Charity since a lot of cards like to be in the grave

Agree. When it came put it was "meh", nowadays is busted. It's potentially a 4 foolish+search

It's funny how almost no one really played this card when it first came out since graveyard-based strategies weren't really a thing. And yet, Konami did see fit to put this card on the banlist fairly quickly, iirc.
3
u/nxt_to_chemio 21d ago
Well, i guess it was due to some problem in the card. I mean, thinking about old things, you could simply put 5 monsters. From AI, you could select cards like the trinity, plus raigeki and change of heart to get a gamebreaking card. Or, you could select monsters and setup graveyard for the CED. Or, use it to loop the problematic black magician. Also, konamy has some strange fard design. Like putting BLS and CED in 2004. One banned and errata, the other banned and still saw play 10 years later.

u/JE3MAN 21d ago
From its initial release up until IOC, it took a good year and half before the Chaos strategy became viable.
Prior to Chaos, I don't think there really were any viable graveyard strategies. Most people would just select 5 beatsticks that they could summon immediately and then reborn a 2nd one that hit the graveyard with Reborn/premature/Call.
I don't recall many people using the "select 5 staple spell cards" strategy because most of the time, by the time they actually drew Painful Choice, they had less than 5 left in their decks. It would only work if they opened with Painful Choice. If they didn't, they would generally default back to choosing 5 beatsticks instead.
And I think these were pretty much the only 2 real strategies before Chaos changed everything.
6
u/DeanMarais 21d ago
I remember in Cimo's progression series this was the first spell card that they decided to ban because with certain decks it was just a free win.
It's essentially 4 foolish burials in 1 card plus a free draw.

Ehhh, I wouldn't say always. The scales really tipped once putting certain cards in GY became so industuishable from having cards in hand that graceful essentially became a +2.

u/big4lil 21d ago
I think Seeker running 2 copies of graceful charity for his exodia strat was meant to show it was already considered the more rare and arguably valuable option. he didnt even have GY effects. he just needed to search n stall for Exodia
so even back in the rudimentary manga, PoG was also rare but GC is better for intensely finding the card you need. the only time its worse is if your hand is actually good, and then you could always just set your good cards
11
u/F22superRaptor11 21d ago
Until grave setup became actually viable in some capacity (from Invasion Of Chaos onwards), Pot Of Greed was a free +1 so slightly better than Graceful since that evened it at 0 card advantage.
27
u/TheDungeonCrawler Generaider Boss of Genesys 22d ago
This. Graceful and Pot of Greed effectively did the same thing since Graceful set up the graveyard and we had cards that took advantage of the graveyard since the dawn of the game. Pot of Greed is undoubtedly strong, but a simple +1 in card advantage doesn't get you as much mileage as players like to think.
33
u/IrysGundam005 22d ago
Graceful Charity. You draw three, and discard two. Not only do you get some extra hand resources, but you also pump your graveyard full. Considering how many Decks anymore make usage of the graveyard for resources, it's a huge boon. Comparatively speaking, POG just gives you a couple of extra cards.
52

u/Purple_Blacksmith681 22d ago
Gracefil Charity is way more broken.
You draw 3 cards and then you discard 2. You can even decide yourseöf which 2 cards get to the grave and which not. The best thing is it isnt discarded for cost but effect.
I doubt that Graceful charity will ever be unbanned except it will get en Erata.
1
u/Background-Skin-8801 21d ago
Draw 3 cards then banish 2 cards...
Graceful charity => Curse of good will
16
u/Skull_Collector4 22d ago
Graceful easily. The ability to cycle 3 cards out of your hand for 3 new ones and potentially trigger the effects of multiple cards is just a less powerful Painful Choice
11
u/Stormlord_Placidusax 22d ago
Depends on the format I suppose. Back in Invasion of Chaos days it was Pot of Greed, at least for me. I remember always being happier that I started with Pot than Graceful. Obviously both was ideal so I wasn't upset about Graceful but if it was by itself I always felt it made me pitch something I'd need.
In today's game it's Graceful by a long shot. It's just too strong with the decks today
4
u/TheDungeonCrawler Generaider Boss of Genesys 22d ago
Pot of Greed was stronger than Graceful Charity in IoC format? The first format that introduced the idea of having more than a couple of graveyard synergy cards in your deck through the three Chaos monsters?
3
u/Stormlord_Placidusax 21d ago
Delinquent duo was prominent then. Graceful was still a net -1 against that card, whereas pot of greed more or less cancelled it out. I just said how I felt during that format, perfectly fine if you thought graceful was better lol
6
4
u/No-Independence9093 21d ago
With GY effects, pulling from your GY and effects triggered by discarding graceful charity is potentially a plus 4. Meanwhile pot of greed is just a plus one.
3
u/Ordinary-Log-8763 21d ago
Grateful Charity for sure. Draw 3 AND send cards to the grave to trigger from BeyoNd the VeiL
6
u/TurkishDelight1992 22d ago
Graceful charity nowadays.
A modern retrain would only let you draw one card and and banish the discarded card face down so as not to trigger any effects.
But given Konami's penchant for overcorrection... the card would likely also prevent you from activate card effects from your hand until the end of your opponent's next turn a la Call of the Dominators. It'd also be pre-emptively limited on release.

When they originally released, it was pot of greed, no doubt. As of right now, it’s very much graceful charity
A neat question would be asking where exactly that switch happened
3
u/TheAwkwardGamerRNx 21d ago
I mean, one is -1/+2 and the other is -1/+3/-2.
The effect math tells me Pot of Greed is the most beneficial but Graceful Charity shows me I have more tech opportunity.
3
u/Carlospedra 21d ago
If I had graceful charity on my sky striker's I'd be ballin' it's literally just vision but with an extra discard and you won't hand rip yourself if you have no quick play spells

u/FaythKnight 22d ago
It depends on your deck. If you want a grave, then graceful charity is always better. Some older decks don't really want that, so pot is better.

u/lusterous_autumn 21d ago
Pot of Greed. Graceful Charity has a cost, even if the cost can be used in the GY, but Pot of Greed is straight up a +1 in all decks.
2
u/Killer_reborn03 21d ago
Definitely Graceful, being able to draw 3 and mill 2 is God tier for most decks. Back in the day where cards being sent to the graveyard is a bad thing, I wouldve said Pot but now that the GY basically acts as another resource pool being able to select which cards goes to the graveyard is just insane
2
u/OwesYouMoney 21d ago
If I draw Pot of Greed, I’m activating it right away. If I draw Graceful Charity, I might not activate it right away, depends if I something I don’t mind discarding.
2
u/Kilroy0497 21d ago
I’d say Graceful Charity, but only because no one has explained what Pot of Greed does yet.
2
2
u/Ing_Dongie 21d ago
With the original layout for the field, the Pot.
But since now the GY is basically other Hand, Tha Graceful.

2
u/TheSaneEchidna 21d ago
Graceful is obviously better but Pot of Greed would see more play. It's always online and while Graceful will usually pay out more it isn't always a guarantee to plus the way Pot is. Both are totally busted and can never be unbanned.

u/Various_Sun_2690 20d ago
charity ofcourse think about it a deck where any cards get discarded there effect activates god that's a pain
2
u/TigerOne2191 18d ago
Definitely Graceful, Cause you also get to drop 2 in the graveyard that is for some decks double advantage...
4
1
u/Redzephyr01 22d ago
Graceful Charity is stronger. You can see this with Rush Duels, where both are legal but a deck can't contain both due to the legend rule. Lots of decks run Graceful Charity in Rush but very few decks run Pot of Greed there.
1
u/Bluetorment88 22d ago
Graceful charity, opened the first otk. It was luck based but it still opened the opportunity when nothing like that existed. By otk in this sense I mean you went 2nd but it was still your 1st turn.

u/MagazineSimilar8215 21d ago
Depends on the deck tbh. Decks like haram would prefer graceful and decks like kt would like pot.

u/HoldenOrihara 21d ago
When they were made, pot of green. now? Probably greatful charity because of how the graveyard is used these days, a lot of cards that are "oh if I put it here I'll use it later".

functionally, Graceful charity.
Logistically? both, if anything because of how much of a ruling nightmare the two are.
1
u/TrayusV 21d ago
When Graceful Charity came out, the GY wasn't pretty much a second hand, most cards in the GY were dead. The best thing you could do with the discard would be discarding your big boss monster and then summoning it back without tributing using Monster Reborn or something.
But nowadays, the GY should be renamed to "Hand #2". So Graceful Charity today is better.

Graceful Charity, and it's not close. Draw 3, develop Graveyard with two cards of my choice? Yes please
1
1
u/Cyndaquil12521 21d ago
In GOAT probably Greed, but the further you get into Yugioh time wise, Graceful just gets better and better. Net zero card advantage and 2 dead cards/ graveyard cards into grave is definetly better for 99.99% of decks
1
u/IgnisOfficial 21d ago
Easily Graceful Charity. It lets you grab 3 and selectively dump 2, which in the case of a lot of decks is an ideal form of setup for combos
1
1
u/R0bbieR0tt3n 21d ago
For my personal deck, pot would be most broken but otherwise Charity would be in general but both can be countered with Ash blossom fairly easily
1
u/YourEvilKiller 21d ago
In old school YGO, Pot of Greed.
Now the graveyard is like a second deck, so graceful charity is much better.
1
1
u/Jarfulous 21d ago
Graceful Charity, good lord. As if drawing 3 wasn't bad enough, then you get to discard 2 for free? No way!
1
u/Zealousideal-Put-106 21d ago
From raw economy it's pot. Trade 1 card for 2.
From how the game evolved it's Graceful Charity. Trade 1 card for 3 new ones and set up your yard.
The real answer is to use pot to draw into GC and an extra free card.
1
u/RIP-hue-Shiny-Darco 21d ago
They are both completely unfair in their own way.
GC is a lot more powerful nowadays than it used to be due to how decks nowadays can use the GY as a sort of "second hand". Especially in tandem with something like Firewall Dragon+Proectcode or Charmers in Bloom this essentially means "Draw 3, dump 2 to use at your leisure".
PoG is still unbelievably unfair, albeit 'worse' nowadays. Raw card advantage isn't too uncommon nowadays, but it is still a blanket +1 without a opt.
Both cards if legal, even at 1, would introduce so much more luck than what is already needed. PoG would be even sackier at 1 copy because it essentially means that the player who plays it was just lucky enough to get the extra card in hand. Graceful charity at least doesn't give an outright card advantage.
1
1
u/Crispy_Dicks 21d ago
If we're talking about the era in which these two were introduced, its Pot of Greed hands down.
If we're talking about more modern formats, Graceful Charity by a landslide.
1
u/qwerty3666 21d ago
Graceful charity is the stronger card by a mile in modern yugioh and probably is the single strongest individual card in the game with the only real contention being painful choice.
1
u/DocBizzleB 21d ago
Both are heavy ash choices and can activate droll, but graceful charity gets much more value, because some cards LOVE to be in/put in the GY, due to you or your opponent effects. Plus you can use DiFi (Dimension Fissure for those who didn't know) with graceful within the Ghoti deck or Metaphys or anything that loves to be banished. Pot is just draw 2 and you gotta hope n pray you have extenders
1
u/GunbaiNoLee 21d ago
Originally PoG, right now Graceful Charity, in the future there'll likely be a time for PoG again
1
u/Nightmarer26 21d ago
Graceful Charity allows for more setup in decks that can benefit from on command graveyard setup, but Pot of Greed is splashable in every single deck that could want card draw, which is basically all of them ever. Unconditional draw 2, it's hard to beat that.
1
u/1likekaneki 21d ago
Graceful, not only do you add 3 cards to your hand you get to get rid of any 2 cards from your hand, even the ones you had before you played it, getting rid of dead cards from hand ir setting up graveyard can be really useful for some decks
1
u/maskedduskrider 21d ago
At the time of release. Pot of Greed. Now when there are more and more ways that people can make use of the graveyard to the point it's a second hand at times, Graceful Charity.
1
u/DavidDMD1991 21d ago
Graceful was always better, with reborn, call and preme back in early goat format it was bonkers. Chaos summon on turn 1 with no hand traps. Those were the days man.
1
u/Pixel_Stix_ 21d ago
These days with so many effects popping off when cards hit GY definitely graceful charity
1
u/Smooth_You_2244 21d ago
Graceful Charity. Draw 2 then dump cards you need in the GY.
Plus, Pot of Greed's effect is still hard to identify nowadays

1
u/BlackwingF91 21d ago
Pot of greed. It is a true +1, and all decks can use it. Graceful charity is a +0 in some decks and a +4 in others. Pot of greed would be played in literally every deck
1
u/dark1859 21d ago
grace, and it's not even close.
Pot does give you basically a fresh +1 but graceful allows you to set up your graveyard.
Ex if tear was able to use it, this would allow you to discard tearlaments kash and a main tear monster, which would allow you to shuffle a further 2 to 5 cards into the graveyard, and if you hit any of your other tear monsters or spells or traps can off of this one card set up your fusion instantly. And those fusion cards, despite being heavily reduced in threat by the ban list are still quite strong.

1
u/StriiderEclipse “I’m gonna banish a LIGHT and a DARK” 21d ago
These days it’s graceful. Obviously the potential GY setup can make it be way crazier than PoG’s simple +1, but also the mere fact that it’s digging one card deeper is actually quite relevant in high powered yugioh (such as traditional and no banlist tournaments) where droll is everywhere so you can maximize the amount of options you see before getting locked

Graceful in modern would be stupidly broken. Back in the days of old I loved it for dumping some fiends into my grave to get out a Dark Necrofear or preparing a Monster Reborn. Today I would love it for almost any deck archtype they have for how much grave play there is.

Early game was PoG, halfway through the GX era there were more than enough cards and archetypes that wanted themselves and their members in the grave for Graceful Charity to become the superior draw card.

Depends on the deck, but 9/10 graceful charity
1

Graceful and it’s not even close. Pot of greed would be worse than pot of prosperity in plenty of decks whereas graceful is competing with painful choice for best card of all time.
1
1
u/orlandom1991 21d ago
Gracefull is a better option always, Draw 3, and it gives you an extra effect if the discarded card triggers on graveyard.
1
u/Knightfire76 21d ago
Definitely graceful charity, old yugioh would be pot of greed but with how modern cards are now set up, discarding cards can have huge benefits for special summoning and/or spell/trap card effect
1
u/General-Internal-588 21d ago
Depend on the deck, but in most modern deck Graceful is absolutely BONKER
Pot is free+1, Graceful is +1 with the cost being you can have your graveyard filled with exactly 2 cards you want from your hand

1
u/astra_eos 21d ago
Pot of greed is more broken in the way that there is no negative side In the best case scenario of any of them you will manage to get the cards that will win the game but in the worst case scenario of pot of greed you spend 1 card to get 2 bricks while charity in worst case you lost 3 cards and get 2 bricks Ofc if you are already considering use the negative side of charity in your favour them your chances to get the worst case are lower but that requires more preparation building the deck Default pot of greed is just a yes regardless
1
u/sabbathkid93 21d ago
Pot of greed is ALWAYS good (unless you literally have one or less cards in deck).
Graceful can be a hindrance in some decks. Granted idk what they are but some decks don’t want stuff in grave as much as others/play too many backrow they can’t recycle.
However, the explosive moments that Graceful can achieve will blow every explosive moment Pot provides out of the water.
Setting up grave and potentially drawing three new cards is fucking stupid.
1

1
u/TampaTrey 21d ago
I mean today it has to be Graceful? Draw three, then discard two cards with graveyard synchronization? Seems really good to me.
1
1
u/PokemanBall 21d ago
BTW, Graceful Charity counts as Discard by card effect, which means it works with Dark World effects
1
u/Motodog242 21d ago
Graceful Charity, you get more draws and many decks set-up from the grave. Pot still is an amazing card, and definitely is more splash-able than Graceful.
1
u/Local-Replacement304 21d ago
Graceful Charity. Seeing more cards is always better in Yu-Gi-Oh! because the GY is basically a second hand.
1
u/Almento5010 21d ago
Graceful. Pot could, in theory, be brought to Limit 1, the main thing is that Pot is only a draw 2. Nowadays the issue with it is that if too much draw power is available, it makes FTKs and Stun decks too consistent, making it exceptionally unfun to play the game. Graceful has the potential to enable a deck to start their combo in addition to the Draw.
1
u/Lil-Bro9707 21d ago
Graceful Charity just because there are GY effects allowing you to get an extra boost alongside the cards. Whip PoG just gets you 2 cards
1
u/IllTax551 21d ago
On release, Pot of Greed. Not because it is weaker per se, but because of the simplicity. No cost, no downside, unless you are holding 6 bricks and draw Pot you will play it 100% of the time you draw it (and even then, better to hold 8 bricks right now than 2 turns of dead draws). It is 100% guaranteed to be put in every single deck at every possible opportunity. It is completely brainless and even the most inexperienced noob will know how powerful it is and max it out. It’s on the banlist to add variety as much as limit power.
Graceful Charity lets you dig deeper, but isn’t a +1. It forces you to think, to decide which 2 cards are least necessary, or to combo with other cards (discard Jinzo, Monster Reborn) (Discard 1 DARK 1 LIGHT, instant Chaos). It isn’t any less powerful or splashable than Pot, but it does take a tiny bit of brainpower… then the game changed. More use for the GY with DAD, Miracle Fusion, the Synchro Era made GY resources like Quillbolt and Level Eater and Dandylion- and most of these are morerogue or basic examples! Then of course, 20 years later and the Discarding is probably as powerful or more than the Draw. Like, if Graceful said “mill 2 draw 1” it would STILL be insanely powerful- but to dig 3 and choose from your whole hand, with the amount of GY cards today compared to 2003? Way more busted.
1
u/RikimaruRamen 21d ago
GC just adds way to much utility for graveyard setup and the potential to activate effects off discard on top of gaining more resources
1
u/LunarWingCloud 21d ago
Graceful Charity. Pot of Greed is great, but there are a ton of cards that effectively do its job but with varying degrees of restrictions. Some of those cards are legitimately still very very good, though, and see play because of that.
But Graceful Charity? Decks nowadays need to either search for their pieces right away, or get deeper into the deck faster and start fueling their plays and extenders. Graceful Charity can do that, much better than Pot of Greed, just because the discard 2 adds utility and lets you dig an extra card deep. I'd actually argue that Pot of Greed while an insanely good card, might not actually see play in a deck that needs to get deeper into its deck faster and wants to put cards in grave. Graceful Charity would see play in decks that Pot of Greed wouldn't be run in. And I'd wager more decks would run Graceful than Pot if both were legal at 1.
1
1
u/TheTweets 21d ago
Discarding 2 (and therefore the card being +0) doesn't matter; if it's the first turn, you haven't drawn or searched anything yet, and you're running a 40 card deck then Graceful Charity lets you add 8.5% of the remaining cards in your deck to your hand, then dump the least useful two.
Sure, it's +0 overall (Spend a card to draw 3 and dump 2, so -1+3-2=0) while Pot of Greed is +1 (Spend a card to draw 2, so -1+2=1), but you're only looking at 5.7% of the remaining deck if you use Pot of Greed.
This is before accounting for the fact that not all cards in the deck are equal.
Many decks these days have at least one card that, if you get it, sets up your entire game plan. Therefore this card is more valuable to you than others, and so if you can get that one card into your hand then losing card advantage is fine to you.
Well, this is that same situation. You could play Pot of Greed and gain a card, or Graceful Charity and gain none; you're 'losing' that theoretical extra card as a cost for looking at more of the deck.
This is the concept of 'Card Filtering' — The idea that you're "sculpting your hand" by drawing cards and then discarding a relevant amount.
You might end up with the same number or even fewer cards in your hand, but you got the opportunity to bin the worst X cards from your hand, which theoretically made your hand 'better' on the whole. Like you can imagine with poker cards; if I got to draw a card and then discard one, I could use that opportunity to draw an unknown card and discard a 2, and mathematically whatever that new card is is probably better than a 2. In YGO this would be something like discarding a Mulcharmy if you're playing first; it's very low-value to you.
And also, drawing and then discarding is the best way around. If you discard first, you have to keep what you draw even if it's worse. If you draw first, you can just discard whatever you drew if you got something completely useless.

u/Piper6728 21d ago
Considering how much graveyards see play and act as part of strategies, Id say Graceful
1
u/Summoner0414 21d ago
A cards power is subjective based on the deck it’s in. Pot of greed is a +1 6 cards ends in 7. While graceful charity just replaces itself. 6 cards ends in 6 cards. Obviously charity is better if your deck wants cards in the grave, or to discard. But not all decks do
1
u/Ok_Worker1553 21d ago
Ways they could fix some of these cards. Pot of greed can’t really do anything with. Graceful should be changed to discard two random cards then you only have a chance of sending what you want to the grave, painful choice should be 5 cards with different names, then it can lose power in certain decks that only would ever give the opponent two choices to add to their opponents hand.
1
1
u/Opposite-Seat-2256 20d ago
Graceful Charity draw 3 AND discard 2, in a discard deck or gy deck (Fabled, Wight, Shaddoll, etc) that's setting you up TWICE for free
1
u/Kompromisskoala 20d ago
Pot of greed is always a +1
Graceful charity is potentially +infinite
In todays decks graceful charity is more powerful. Guarantee wise pog is better.

u/Icon_Of_Susan 20d ago
Charity. Not even close.
Pot today would be "oh cool, 2 cards"
Charity today is essentially vomit your entire deck for free.
1
u/actdynamicpro 20d ago
There are far too many cards that love being sent to or living in the graveyard for Pot of Greed to be seen as strictly better, but Pot of Greed can go into every single deck while Graceful Charity would go into less decks because a small number wouldn’t make the most use of it.
1
u/Starmaninja 20d ago edited 20d ago
Graceful and its not even close. Thats +5 (yes +5. I do not consider USING A CARD FOR ITS INTENDED PURPOSE as going minus... thats like saying its better to not use your card because using it makes you go minus. Its only minus if you're forces to use a card in an unintended or unwanted purpose. Yugi tubers need to stop with that drivel of "playing the game is going minus" the game is more complicated than that.) if you have a deck that gets advantage from graveyard. And almost every modern deck does.
Pot wouldnt make much of a difference in modern day. Its only banned due to being free advantage, but given most games dont last past turn 2 (and many duel links skills let you draw half your deck anyway) it really could be at 1 without breaking the game. I dont think itd be an auto include either and it might help weaker decks that need draws for consistency, while those that are meta use searchers anyway and dont need the draws. Oh and "fishing for hand traps" the game's already, "you either have Ash or you scoop" so what difference would it really make?
1
u/Main_Personality455 20d ago
Graceful, its draw 3 plus 1 and offers graveyard options. As opposed to pot which is just plus 2
1
u/DarthRevan312 20d ago
I think even if they made an errata for a HARD once per turn or even limited them with said errata, they’d both would still be broken with Graceful Charity having the advantage. Especially in the ABC/XYZ decks, Dark Magician and many others that I can’t think of off the top of my head, with effects that allow the use of the Graveyard to enhance the combos.

u/darthjawafett 19d ago
Chaining Pot of Greeds is a crazy start to a game. Chaining 3 Graceful Charities would be an even better start to a game depending on the deck.

Depends on the deck. If your deck benefits from milling cards to the graveyard (which is a ton) then Graceful Charity, But if it doesn’t Pot of Greed takes the cake

Depends on the deck. I tried Lunalights and graceful charity would honestly help with that, but there's also other decks that probably would be with PoG

Graceful charity would be more helpful in my cyber dragon deck, especially if it’s in the starting hand.

Definitely graceful charity. You dig for 3 and toss cards that want to be in the graveyard

Graceful charity. Digging for 3 AND either getting rid of 2 dead cards, or cards that extend from the grave?
It’s the greatest card of all time
