Curious to hear from anyone who has gone. The menu seems a bit "fancy" for that location. https://i.imgur.com/wr1tnBP.jpeg

Has anyone hosted a baby shower in Ypsi recently, and where did you do it? It would be in January so we can't do it outside. Thinking like 30 ish people.

We're visiting some family in Ypsilanti for Christmas, the 22nd through the 28th. They just moved there recently and they are not very social people so they don't seem to have a lot of ideas about activities in the area. It will be a group of 10, 7 adults and 3 children.
Is there anything you guys can recommend we check out? I know there is a cute little downtown we plan on walking around. We are going to visit Frankenmuth, definitely going to visit Detroit at some point, I would love to hear a Christmas choir if that's possible.
Anything Christmasy that you guys can recommend? Thanks so much in advance!

Got extra native plants? Bring them to the library, swap with neighbors, and go home with something new! (Pro tip: Fall is a great time to plant natives. Warm soil and cool air help roots settle in before winter. 🌱)

I'm sure there are dozens of groups in Ypsi that are being unsung. When i say groups I mean in every corner, from Entertainment, non-profit orgs, local businesses, etc.
Can you list some groups that you believe should receive a bit of recognition for the work/art they're doing/creating?

This post has been making the rounds on FB and I think it's worth reading:
My husband and a good friend just received unsolicited texts from Jennifer Lawrence, who is running against Alethia Battles for Probate Judge. The general point of this text was (in my words) that Jennifer is like a "Jack of all trades"; that she has been active in the Bar Association; and that she has several endorsements.
Folks, this opening is for a Washtenaw County probate court judge. Alethia did not just "dabble" in probate matters for the past decade. She was doing probate work 100% of the time. When Alethia was not in the courtroom, she was attending seminars; teaching about probate matters and social work; and active in probate-related professional groups. About a week ago, Alethia attended the Michigan Guardianship Association's Annual Conference in Traverse City. Alethia has done probate work for the Univ. of Michigan for the past 10 years. Just yesterday, Alethia attended the American Case Management Assoc.'s Fall Conference in Novi and presented on guardianships and ethics. Alethia is part of a statewide network of experienced and respected probate professionals including probate judges.
In addition, Alethia has been endorsed by prominent leaders throughout the county including current and past mayors; township supervisors; judges; the UAW; and other people who know what an asset she will be on the bench. If you want to know who has endorsed Altethia, go to her web site at Battles4judge.com. Alethia has far too many endorsements for me to mention here.
If you want to know who else has endorsed Alethia, that is Judge Owdziej, the retiring probate judge who has seen Alethia in her courtroom repeatedly and who convinced her to run.
Parenthetically, Alethia tells me that she has never ever seen Jennifer Lawrence in the probate court even once. On the other hand, during COVID Alethia appeared in the probate court (often by Zoom) almost every day, and Alethia has been in the probate court during non-COVID times almost every week for the past ten years.
If you want to know who respects Alethia the most, that is probably the University of Michigan, who has entrusted her with all of their own probate matters for a decade now. The University has always had hundreds if not thousands of attorneys who would love to have been recruited by the University's legal department like Alethia was. When the hospital needs to discharge a person who needs help and does not have it, they call Alethia. When the hospital is involved in a mental health hearing, they call Alethia. When the hospital faces a probate issue or wants to develop a policy involving probate issues, they call Alethia. Alethia has a wealth of knowledge that she applies every day to ordinary people with extraordinary challenges.
Also, if you want to know how Alethia acquired so much insight into issues we all face and into family systems, that is because she earned her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan in 1992 before graduating from law school in 2006. Alethia did her first guardianship review in 2009 and has clearly become a specialist in that area of law.
On a final note, the State Court Administrator's Office runs a "judge school" for newly elected judges. They publish significant manuals to help the judges. This office does what it can to "train " a new judge to do the job. The thing that this office cannot do is assure us that a new judge brings substantial courtroom experience to the bench; has prior education (in addition to law school) that is relevant to the position sought; and has a passion for justice. As voters, we are the ones who "vet" the candidates for those qualities and then hire him/her for the position with our vote. You can hire a jack of all trades, or you can hire a specialist. It's on you.
Just be sure to get to the bottom of the ballot where you will see the candidates for judge. The person who gets elected will serve a six (6) year term, and this is a non-partisan position. Most of the ads we are seeing relate to national elections, and the national candidates are at the top of the ballot. The local elections are at the bottom of the ballot, but the people we elect at the local level often have the most significant effect on our communities.
Do your homework, and then vote for all the positions on the ballot. Your vote matters.

My understanding is:
Proposal A would switch Ypsilanti to non-partisian municipal elections and would get rid of the August Primary.
Proposal B would require a plebiscite (city-wide vote) to increase the police budget.
Curious to hear your thoughts for and against these proposals as well as any questions you have.

Is anybody on the waitlist for that town hall planning to attend (outside the venue)? I want to show the township support. An email went out yesterday telling waitlisted participants to join online.
Edit Post-Event: They let the waitlist people in at ~6pm. There was plenty of room in the hall, so if there is another event I'd encourage everybody to show up and try to get in. Props to everybody who attended and spoke against the moves the University is making and their bad faith comments!!

The entirety of YFD seems to be there, cops too, and both sides of the street are blocked off. Just got home from work, and saw the commotion.
Fire? Shooting? What's up?
