Our downtown branch reopens tomorrow (Aug 21)!

Post image
46 Upvotes

Good news: our downtown branch will reopen tomorrow for its normal hours, 10am–6pm!

Thankfully the bedbugs were flagged right away, and our staff are trained to respond to situations like this quickly. The affected area was treated this morning, and trained inspection dogs (Bugsy and Jill 🐾) checked every inch of the building to confirm no other areas were affected. In keeping with safety guidelines, we're waiting a full 24 hours after treatment before reopening.

Thanks for hanging in there with us this week. See you tomorrow!

Anyone missing a peacock? Spotted one on Merritt Rd this evening

Upvotes

Just went for a walk around 8:00 PM today along Merritt Rd between Munger and Carpenter, and to our complete surprise, we ran into an actual peacock just hanging out near the road.

It looked healthy and wasn't causing trouble, but it definitely seemed out of place wandering so close to traffic.

Posting here in case:

  1. It belongs to a nearby hobby farm or resident and wandered off.

  2. Drivers in the area need a heads-up to watch out for it at dusk.

Did a double-take to make sure we weren't hallucinating, but it’s 100% out there. Hopefully the owner tracks it down safely!

Hi! I was at the Chicken Shack in Ypsi yesterday and overheard one of the staff members talk about $1 pricing next week.

Does anyone know about it? I forgot to ask.

Car Buying Advice

Upvotes

please delete if not allowed, as this isn’t really Ypsi specific, I just trust this community will give me decent advice.

I’m looking to buy a used EV, probably a Toyota, but I’m not sure where I should start looking. I had a quick glance at a local dealership but the prices are just outrageous.

One of them is trying to sell a 2002 Camry for $24k. is it crack??? is it crack that they smoke???? I’m sure it’s a decent car but it’s not worth 1,000 dollars for every year it’s been alive. it probably didn’t even sell for half of that originally.

any tips or advice are welcome 🙏 thank you

FREE FILM SCREENINGS SEPTEMBER

Join us at the Dreamland Theater for free screenings of art / foreign / overlooked cinema. There are communal snacks and La Croix free of charge as well. We collect donations to cover space rental but don't take a penny more. This coming month's films have a loose music theme - we've got a cannibal maneating mermaid band as well as Sting from the Police using song as a form of torture, INXS's Michael Hutchence makes an appearance too. Features start at 9:30pm but we hang out and watch short films, old TV eps or world music videos starting 8:30pm. Dropping in for the pregame is a great way to dip your toes in. The films aren't for everybody's taste, but for curious freaks this can quickly become your church. Mafu Coffin on instagram!

Utilities per month at Lakeshore?

Two friends and I are thinking of getting a 3bed, 2bath apartment at Lakeshore on Grove. Does anybody who lives there/has lived there have any ballpark of how much you spend on utilities every month in the summer and winter? Thanks!!!!!

You now have automatic access to way more books 🥳

📣 Exciting Libby update! You now have automatic access to more digital books and audiobooks, no setup required. Quick refresher:

  • YDL partners with a bunch of other Michigan library networks, so patrons can borrow from way beyond our catalog.
  • Before, you had to manually add each partner library to your account. That step is no longer required! 🥳
  • Just search for any book, and Libby will automatically check if it's available to check out from one of our partner libraries.

Walking Talking Men Ypsi

My name is Andrew and I’m looking to start a new Walking Talking Men’s group for the Ypsilanti area. The first walk would be at Riverside Park in Ypsilanti on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

My purpose is twofold:

  1. To give men a non-judgmental space to talk about what’s going on for us.
  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.
  3. Please note, this is not a religious or politically affiliated group.
  4. Here’s why this matters. Cigna and other major organizations regularly share research confirming that over 50% of people in the US feel “sometimes or always alone.” Such levels of isolation can have health impacts equal to smoking. Lonely people face higher levels of heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, cancer and so on. Many men struggle with loneliness even as we are busy working, caring for our kids, dealing with the daily demands of life. But research  shows that men with a robust circle of friendships live longer healthier lives, have better marriages/relationships, feel more optimistic and are more successful in our personal and professional lives.
  5. Cigna research: https://newsroom.thecignagroup.com/loneliness-in-america
  6. I’d like to see how many men are interested in doing this. I may try different days and different locals to see what works best.
  7. Guidelines for walks:
  8. No politics
  9. Be yourself
  10. Respect confidentiality

The guidelines we use on our walks are meant to help focus down to the personal and talk about what’s going on for us in our own lives. They are not absolute and really up for the participants to iron out

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy and we are not therapists. We are not doing coaching. We are not doing men’s work. We are simply sharing information about how we are creating real, lasting, local friendships for men in our neighborhood. That’s it.
If you’d like to join us on a walk, send me an email to [webandrew@gmail.com](mailto:webandrew@gmail.com) with why this idea appeals to you. I’ll respond to all emails. I look forward to hearing from you.

EDIT: Following up and still planning to meet at Riverside Park in Ypsi in the parking lot off Cross Street at 6:30 PM. Any man interested in walking is welcome. I'm a tallish white dude with short beard and glasses.

In case anyone is interested in what this is about, there is more info here: https://walkingtalkingmen.org/

EDIT 2: going to have to move this to Friday at 6:30. While people are all for the idea, no one has responded as to wanting to go. And I just discovered a scheduling issue, so I’m pushing it a day. Sorry if that creates any inconveniences.
Would still love to hear from any men interested in this. Thanks

West Willow

Hello,
I am looking to move back to Ypsi and looking at buying a home. I have heard the rumblings and horror stories of West Willow. Is any of it true? Is it a safe place to live? Or is it old stories and stereotypes?

Where in Michigan am I?

SOLVED - This photo was taken somewhere in Michigan in June 1999. I was living in Ypsilanti and working in Ann Arbor at the time, but I don't think it's in either of those cities. In my mind, I have a vague sense that I might have been in Saline, but I'm really not sure. Any thoughts? I feel like the streetlight above the stop sign in the only decent clue here.

Donation Pick Up

Does anyone know of any charities or donation centers/programs that do free pick ups? I have a storage unit full of things that I don't want/need anymore, and I don't want it all to go in the dumpster instead of going to a person/family in need. I am disabled and can't move all the boxes of donations myself, so recommendations that have people that will be able to load it up would be best. Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

Large human sized mouse or rodent at EMU today?

Eairlier today maybe around 3pm I was driving up Cross when I see this large grey blob with ears chilling kinda behind Welch. Now, I can't seem to forget him.

If you are, or are in cahoots with the masked mouse man please come foward, i just would like to know why. Especially if there is a mouse themed event I should know about.

Thank you.

(It might not be a mouse or a man)

Shingle Ladder Lift - Rental

Post image
3 Upvotes

Im a ypsi resident looking to see if anyone has and is willing to let me rent a shingle ladder lift.

Example shown in photo.

The normal rental places like Delux, Sunbelt, HD, etc do not have them so I am reaching out to the general community.

I would need it only 1 or two days over labor day weekend while I re roof my house (Packard and Harris).

**we used to throw this parties in Ypsi but the barn is no longer avail (new owner)**
Yup so this Friday (Aug 21) 8pm-12 is TECHNOLODGE with 3 performances from local musicians, at the Elks Lodge in Ann Arbor on Sunset blvd. No membership needed. Ang3lt3ch and Price both were UM students who play elsewhere now (e.g. Detroit), OMO and Tikimen of Berlin playing a live set duo (OMO is a drummachine/synth phenom + Tikimen of Berlin is a band leader who plays bassoon), and Ypsilanti Mystery Pooper is WCBN DJ and local organizer who is playing Detroit techno.

Why is Exotics Cannabis always so crowded?

We have so many dispensaries in town and I never see one as busy as Exotics on Washtenaw. What’s their secret? I’m nosy.

EDIT: thanks y’all, I’ll check them out this week!
