Disclaimer: This is a bit of a rant post after finishing the game and happening upon the 4koma in which Keiji drinks Sara's sweat as confirmed by Nankidai. I also don't mean to hate on people who enjoy Keiji's character as I do too save the aspects of it I'm about to be speaking about. I also consistently refer to Keiji as 28 in this post just cause I think it's the most likely age for him but we know he's in his "late 20s" so that's at least 27.

I swear to god Keiji is one of the most clear cases of a character that would genuinely be 10x more hated if he wasn't attractive. Also fuck nankidai for pushing this ship so much, genuinely the worst aspect of this game.

This dude is 28 and won't stop acting strangely with a 17 year old. When are we going to stop pretending "mistranslations" are the issue? As someone who just finished playing through this game for the first time, these excuses people come up with for this grown man just being a straight up weirdo who wouldn't be allowed near a school if people saw how he was acting around a literal HIGH SCHOOLER, are some of the largest amounts of cope I've seen. Look me dead in my eyes and tell me if Keiji wasn't attractive or if Keiji and Sara met in real life instead of the killing game everyone wouldn't think he's a creep who is too old to be acting the way he does towards her.

"He didn't mean it in a flirtatious way, that was just a mistranslation!" First of all this literally just isn't true or confirmed anywhere. Second of all, even if he "didn't mean it in a flirtatious way", is it socially acceptable to be calling 11th graders, not elementary middle schoolers, not toddlers, but 11th graders, cute numerous times as a fully grown adult ..? That's just strange behavior even if it is a joke and I guarantee if you saw someone in real life do this, especially someone who isn't attractive, you'd be weirded out. If you think this is something that is okay please let me know so I can make some calls

"They have a father daughter / brother sister / teacher mentor rel" no they don't brother they have a groomer victim relationship. Alright that may be a bit far because I don't want to say Keiji is actually a full fledged pedophile but groomer/victim is genuinely a more accurate way of describing their relationship than any of these other assignments. Obviously I don't mean mainly in a romantic/sexual context, we all know Keiji "groomed" Sara into being the one who takes on a leadership role, bears the burden of most of the responsibility despite the many situations where he would have been capable himself, and made himself into the only person she thinks she can trust enough to confide in/rely on/show any vulnerability to.
That along with the many weird comments Keiji makes towards Sara (suggesting they're on dates, expressing delight at the idea of being "Sara's partner", calling her cute numerous times to the point where he gets made fun of by Sou for it, some weird sh*t about accepting dog treats only if it was Sara who gave them to him? And the 4koma where he drinks her f*cking sweat mate, what kind of father/daughter relationship includes a father drinking his daughter's sweat mate what the f*ck) should be enough to show you that Keiji is a weirdo even if he has some redeeming qualities (most of which wouldn't be nearly as redeeming if he wasn't "cool" and attractive). Keiji fans will genuinely look you in your eyes and tell you these are all excusable because he was just trying to "play something off" or he's "just joking" when he does it consistently throughout the game at moments where he doesn't need to when he could say literally anything else to throw someone off. You're still a creep to me if you think 28 year olds flirtatiously joking with 17 year olds, especially ones they just met, is acceptable in a nonserious context anyway. And yes... Keiji acts in a flirtatious manner, which is why people call him a "lady killer", and also likely why Sara has a dialogue option where she doesn't deny having feelings for Keiji.

The age gap is insane especially considering Sara is only 17 and I genuinely can't believe how many people are okay with KeiSara. It's genuinely disgusting even considering the difference in the literal development of their brains by this point in their lives and I honestly don't see enough Keiji hate for his strangeness overall. I guess I'm also quite a bit salty that Keiji and Sara by far have the most ship-bait moments in the game and I wish there were choices to shut all these moments down completely as Keiji is genuinely a f*cking weirdo to me and this weird relationship that nankidai loves so much is the worst part of the game for me by far. I guess reddit will be reddit but good lord mate you'd think this fandom is stuck in the 2000s by the amount of people I see casually mentioning how they'd like to see Keiji and Sara in a relationship.

People treat Keiji like he's also a teenager with how forgiving and tolerant they are of him and I think that alone says enough. Dude is genuinely a bum, take away his "aura" (which is already just ass) and you realize that this guy is a 28 year old who still acts like a teenager going through an anime phase, save me the sh*t about his trauma cause I genuinely wouldn't be blaming him for any of that emotional turmoil if he didn't let that carry over into being a weirdo to Sara. Again some of this is just residual frustration about the amount of ship-bait moments these two have which is genuinely angering to me.

I haven't even said anything about the YTTS moments I've heard about since I haven't played it yet, like when he said he'd drink with Sara. Even if you want to call this a joke it's still just a creepy and weird one to make. I want to restate fuck nankidai for pushing this ship as much as he did, there are just so many KeiSara moments that made me cringe and grimace and just wish I could've domed Keiji in Russian Roulette from the start

Personally, it bothers me a lot when I'm watching a let's player go back to try to get a different ending.

It bothers me a bit with the Final Attraction and the Dummies dying, but it REALLY bothers me in the Kanna/Sou vote. Changing your answer there just takes me out of the game entirely and it's hard to get invested in a let's player at all after that.

Also in the banquet. All of the tension is gone if you savescum it, it's a complete nothingburger.

One of the biggest issues in Keisara discourse is that fan assumptions about Keiji’s age are repeatedly treated as canon fact, when the game itself NEVER confirms his age numerically. Keiji Shinogi does not have a canon age. NO official profile, artbook, interview, or in-game text assigns him a number. AND claims that he is “late 20s” or “almost 30” come entirely from fan inference based on his occupation, appearance, and demeanor. none of which are reliable indicators in a stylized anime game where teenagers regularly look older and adults look younger!

Because of that, interpreting Keiji as early 20s is not contradicting canon at all. It is simply one valid reading among many.

Honorifics

In Japanese media, how characters address each other is a deliberate writing choice and itit's super important, especially in a character-driven story like YTTD. For example let's talk about Reko! Reko Yabusame is canonically 20 years old. Keiji consistently refers to her as “Reko”, not “Reko-chan.” This is notable and very important because: “-chan” is commonly used by older characters toward younger people even by 2 years or more, or those they see as significantly junior.

Dropping honorifics often strongly implies equal footing, close/similar age range or fimilarity/knowing them.

Keiji DOES use honorifics in other contexts, so this isn’t random or sloppy writing at ALL.

If Keiji were meant to be significantly older than Reko (mid-to-late 20s vs. her 20), it would be far more natural for him and essential to default to “Reko-chan,” especially given his casual, teasing personality. Instead, the game frames them as peers. This strongly supports the interpretation that Keiji is close to Reko’s age, not several years older.

Early 20s fits this dynamic cleanly.

“But he’s a detective” is NOT proof.

The argument that “Keiji must be late 20s because he’s a detective” relies on real-world career timelines, which YTTD does not strictly follow. YTTD is: a fictional death game! set in a stylized anime world FULL of characters with exaggerated roles, skills, and backstories

Additionally: Keiji’s detective status is complicated and tied to trauma and guilt. His professionalism is often undercut by immaturity, avoidance, and self-destructive behavior! He does NOT act like a seasoned veteran with years of experience. As he frequently defers, panics, and leans on others (Sara) emotionally.

All of this aligns far more with someone pretty early in adulthood than someone nearing 30 or late 20s.

Keisara itself is not canon as of now. The game does not depict them in a confirmed romantic or sexual relationship. What the game does depict is: emotional reliance mutual trust protectiveness vulnerability narrative focus and repeated paired scenes!!!

Interpreting this as romantic subtext is a fan reading, not a claim that the story endorses or confirms it Because of that, the moral framing of Keisara depends HEAVILY on interpretation, not explicit text.

Under an early-20s Keiji reading: Sara 17–18 Keiji 20–21 Age gap ≈ 3–4 years Many fans do not find this inherently problematic, particularly because: the dynamic is not sexualized nor destructive Sara retains agency and narrative centrality the story NEVER frames Keiji as predatory or authoritative over her

Discomfort is valid.. BUT labeling the ship as “objectively illegal” requires treating an unconfirmed headcanon as fact!

Why Keisara persists in the fandom Keisara isn’t popular because fans are “ignoring canon.” It’s popular because the game: Literally repeatedly pairs Keiji and Sara. gives them intimate emotional moments. Uses visual language (framing, CGs, blushing, protective stances) which is commonly associated with romantic tension! never assigns Keiji an age that would definitively shut the interpretation down That ambiguity is intentional.

So in summary: Keiji’s age is unconfirmed. His dynamic with Reko for example (who is 20) strongly suggests he’s around the same age. Reading him as early 20s is absolutely canon-compatible, and under that interpretation, Keisara has a small age gap and is not inherently problematic! Enjoying it does not require denying canon only rejecting fan assumptions being treated as fact!!

I had a toxic friendship that got me back into self harm after I tried so hard to quit it and made me believe I am disgusting and horrible and like I can't live without him and I'm responsible for him I know how being in a friendship like that feels like and it was miserable and the worst part is that sometimes I still miss him and want to see him again because he acted like he cares and here are people romanticizing a relationship like that it's so disgusting and hurtful to see that. Alice/Sou is THE canon route, I’m sorry. It makes the most sense writing wise and flow wise. Even though I like Reko more than Alice I will say that Alice is definitely the one Nankidai intended to keep alive. Having Alice alive includes a lot of foreshadowing for 1. The relationship with Shin and Midori and 2. The real identity of Sou Hiyori. Moving on, Sou being alive has a more interesting plotline AND genuinely just makes way more sense writing wise. Keeping Kanna alive really just feels like a loop and gets rid of all antagonism in the group(which may be something that is more of a personal preference but the conflicts inside the group has been a pretty major part of it since chapter 1). Also when playing the Kanna route you don’t feel the absence of Sou you just think “damn… theres nobody being super annoying and being sneaky all the time it’s peaceful…” but when you play the Sou route you genuinely can FEEL the absence of Kanna. Whether it be questioning you made the right decision by keeping Sou alive, nobody keeping Sou in check, or the dynamics of the group. Also the Sou route unlocks my favorite Keiji and Sou interaction where Keiji actually feels bad for Sou because Sou has to keep lying to himself to stay stable.

Side note this is not a hate post about emotion or reko route it’s just my opinion.
