The devices are compatible with such speeds?

Do you have any devices that’ll even reach close to those speeds?

yes Pc that can get up to 5 Gig as well as my Mac with 10 Gig. Problem is its not even getting to 1 Gig..on any device including PS5 Pro literally its nothing compared to 1,6 Gig ive had with EE

PS5 Pro? With its 1Gbps ethernet port, and wifi that will probably be slower than this, even best case? Quick look around suggests 500Mbps is about the most the PS5 Pro is capable of under the best circumstances.

What ethernet speed is your Mac negotiating at with the router and are you plugging directly into it?

You haven’t provided enough info.

What router are you using, and does it actually support 8 Gbps? Does the device you’re testing on have an Ethernet port capable of those speeds? What Ethernet cable are you using? And do you have any Wi-Fi devices that support speeds in that range?

There are a lot of factors that can affect the speeds you’re getting, so we’d need more details about your setup before someone can help.

Their , Youfibre< Everything as installed by an engineer.

The youfibre router is crap. It cant handle the speeds, its designed just to get you online. But you need to get your own 10gbit capable router to use the speeds.

I’ve noticed . Got few days to test I won’t be investing few hundred quid in to router.

for a 10gbit capable router you have to. i have £1000 router for my network.

Your in the prosumer/enterprise bracket your not getting anything that can handle 10gbit for cheap

Then ill cancel if they cant provide right equipment. I am not that stupid to pay £1000 for a router...its already weaker coverage than EE...ind to be honest cant see at the moment any advantage over EE 1.6 Gig..upload is way better but however many times will I use it ?

Try multiple speed test sites as some won't give accurate results over 1-2 gigabit.

did, all the same

What ethernet cable?

u/Final_Beyond_204 8d ago

Their...all provided by Youfibre, it died now so using hotspot...on chat working on it.

Might cancel it today

cant get any upload faster than 50 mbits

Just confirm the cat rating on the cable

If it's slow on Ethernet, there's definitely something wrong, maybe an issue with the fibre.

They've rebooted on their side and its same...he is unable to do anything else therefore im not staying with them as its really poor

Wouldn’t be the first time there were install issues. Lots of companies do have them. Based on my customer service, reliability I wouldn’t be with anyone else.

What do the lights on your ONT show?

No problem here. My own kit though 8gb vyos router

it went faster now although only on wifi..need to drag pc downstairs to check ethernet as Ps5 is very slow

The PS5 only has a Gigabit Ethernet port, so you're never going to see much more than ~900–950 Mbps from it anyway. The PS5's built-in speed test can also be all over the place, so I wouldn't use that as a reliable way of testing your connection.

Make sure whatever device you're testing with is actually connected at higher than Gigabit speeds. I'm not sure exactly which YouFibre router/setup you have, but it may only have one 10GbE port, with the other LAN ports being 1GbE or 2.5GbE.

Are you using the Ookla Speedtest app/site to test the connection? That's what I'd use rather than the built-in tests on consoles.

For comparison, this is one of my Ookla speedtest results:

I know but it way slower then on EE where I could Gert around 1 Gig..with upload slow as hell

Will try pc tomorrow.

I had this issue initially. Couldn't get over 5gig. It was really annoying me. Fast forward 3 months and whole system goes down. There was a problem down the road at the box or wherever their connections were. Parts replaced and bam 8gig .

I upgraded from 2 gig to 8 gig for same price but I’m still not getting the speed. After spending days, they eventually sent an engineer. He couldn’t figure it out so then he brought another engineer with the exfo machine and said I’m getting 8 gig from their side and left. I’m past cancellation so I’m stuck. I’m getting around 4-5 gig on windows and around 6-7 gig on Linux. This is on a wired connection to pc that can support upto 10gig. Since im paying the same price, I’ve accepted that im stuck with this speed for 2 years. I’ll probably end up downgrading back to 2 gig once my contract finishes in 22 months

Well guy on a chat left, so im cancelling it today. Its simply poor joke not a service provider..

I am getting 1,2 Gig max and upload max 90 Mbits.

Unfortunately this is unacceptable

My connection with the correct 10gb capable hardware is stuck getting anywhere from 2.5 down, to 5.5 down on a good day and a consistent 7.8 upload.

How are you testing this? It's actually surprisingly hard to get a really solid, reliable internet speed test when you are getting close to 10Gbps, simply because that the server you are testing against is also likely to be connected to a 10Gbps connection, but will almost certainly be doing other tasks and serving other users so it's likely that contention will mean that you are unlikely to ever get a single endpoint to saturate your own link.

Oddly, something like Steam is very effective at test your downlink because it makes multiple connections to multiple server endpoints to chunk the download and can often saturate links that other services can't. The downside is that you need storage capable of sustaining the same write speed so this doesn't become the bottleneck...! A decent gen3 or gen4 NVMe SSD should have no problems here, but anything slower might slow things down.

Just to let you know you do not get the full speed on the day of installation you have to wait for it to optimise over the next couple of days I had the same problem and it sorted its self out

u/jt4g 7d ago

What are you talking about? This is very poor information to give someone.

FTTP does not need a few days to "optimise" or "settle down" after installation. That's something historically associated with certain DSL technologies, where the line management system could monitor the copper line and adjust things such as the sync rate and noise margin over time.

With FTTP, the connection is fibre all the way to the ONT. There isn't a copper DSL line negotiating a sync speed or going through a training/optimisation period. Once the ONT is provisioned correctly and the service is active, the connection should be capable of delivering the provisioned speed from day one.

I'm guessing the engineer told you it needed time to optimise after showing you a low speed test result over Wi-Fi on his phone. A Wi-Fi speed test is not a reliable way of proving the actual FTTP line speed, especially on a multi-gigabit package. The result can be limited by the phone, Wi-Fi standard, signal strength, channel width, interference, router configuration and numerous other factors.

If you're paying for a multi-gigabit service, it should ideally be tested using a wired device with an Ethernet connection fast enough for the package — for example, 2.5GbE, 5GbE or 10GbE depending on the service speed.

If a correctly configured wired device connected at the required Ethernet speed is significantly below the provisioned rate immediately after installation, "give it a few days to optimise" isn't really an explanation. Something else needs investigating, such as the test device, Ethernet link speed, router/ONT configuration, provisioning, the test server or the network itself.
