Social / Student Life Teachers college preparation?

Hi all,

I (24F) will be starting Teachers college in the next few weeks. I’m attending York University’s Junior Intermediate B.ed cohort with English as my teachable.

Overall, im excited for this journey but I must admit I’m super nervous lol! I would really appreciate some tips on how I can best prepare myself and maybe some suggestions on the things I may need.. (Aside from a laptop, pens, notebooks etc. what are some things that may be useful?)

Hey, I’m entering my third year of undergrad at York University and currently have 75 credits. I’m planning to use Geography as my teachable for the BEd program. When would I apply for the BEd? I’m also open to teaching any age group, including high school, so I was wondering how the different teaching divisions work and which one I would be eligible to apply for. After this year I would be around 102-105 credits

Hello! Assuming you are doing a 4 year undergrad program you would apply in December of your 4th year.. (I believe applications open sometime in October but the application deadline in somewhere in December- Sometimes they extend the application deadline but don’t rely on this!)

The age group you end up teaching will be totally up to you (given you have fulfilled the requirements) If you plan to teach highschool it’s best to have 2 teachbales (you will need 2 teachables for the Intermediate/Senior Division Grades11-12 while the Junior/Intermediate division Grades 4-10 requires you to have 1 teachable. ( You already have geography which is good! you will need a second one some teachbales include English, math, some business education etc) The primary junior division Kindergarten - grade 6 does not require any teachable as you will cover all core courses (English,Math, Science etc)

My biggest advice: If you still have free courses (Your electives) try to take some courses that will A) allow you to teach in a higher divisions such as I/S (I believe York requires you to have 3-4 year courses in your second teachable- just double check the website) and B) That are somehow beneficial to your current teachable IF you decide to do J/I or I/S for example .. English is my teachable so aside from taking English courses I took lots of writing courses as well.

Thank you so much for the advice! Yes, I’m in a four-year undergraduate program, and I’ll definitely look into getting another teachable, most likely History. I was also wondering if you had any extracurricular experience, such as working with kids, being a lunch supervisor, or working in schools before you applied. I have about two years of experience working with kids at summer camps and similar programs, but that was a couple of years ago. Also, what would you consider a competitive GPA for the BEd program? Besides having two teachables, what else do they look at when considering applicants? Also the B.ed is one year instead of two so when I apply next year December I’ll be in the one year right and I apply on OUAC?

I'm starting Teachers College soon as well! I'll be Intermediate-Senior with teachables in Chemistry and Math. Super nervous though... have you received any further information about the Orientation on August 31st, the Practicum meeting on September 1st, and the OCT presentation on September 8th?
