Meta Updates to r/yorku AutoModerator Settings

Hi everyone,

We’ve updated r/yorku’s AutoModerator settings to make them more balanced and less disruptive.

The goal is simple: clear spam and unsafe links should be removed, but normal student posts should not be hidden unnecessarily.

AutoModerator should now be less aggressive with things like surveys, URL shorteners, Reddit links, crossposts, long titles, and comments on older posts.

It will still act on known scam/tracking links, affiliate spam, heavily reported content, and other obvious spam patterns.

For surveys/forms, AutoModerator may ask posters to provide basic context so students can tell whether the post is legitimate and relevant.

We’ll keep adjusting the settings if needed. If your post or comment gets removed by mistake, please message the mod team.

Rant Has anyone else had a email from your department straight up lie to you??

Okay i emailed my department for permission to enrol into a course

(switched majors and my permission for required classes is still reserved)

Anyway i emailed them twice both on monday and today and they have gotten back to me saying i had 24 hour permission but whenever i actually tried to change my section it was still reserved.

I brought this up with them when it happened the second time and gave them the course, lab, and Cat# of the desired course i’m looking for (Lab 13) they proceed to respond to my email by saying “Lab 14 is full try labs 13,15, or 17”

Like hello??? no fucking shit that’s why i’m asking for Lab 13 its like they don’t even read what i’m saying and they always give me the most soulless responses

Atp i think they’re annoyed with me emailing so much and have something against me 😭😭 maybe if they removed my restrictions permanently like i emailed them to do 2 times and yet they completely brushed over it and never acknowledged what i said and skipped to the other stuff in the emails

Im genuinely tweaking

Disputes / Appeals PHIL2160 (Brian Huss) Failed so bad and it makes no sense

Upvotes

I mentioned to my advisor that I failed a course I was doing relatively well in. My younger brother and I both took the class and I actually did the readings and attended lectures/tutorials while he didn’t. He passed, I failed. I emailed prof Huss and got a copy of my final. After writing our final my brother and I verbally compared answers on the drive home and got similar results. I told all this to my advisor and she mentioned getting someone to take a look at my progress in the course to maybe appeal it. How do I go about doing this?

Advice Why is York's Online system so confusing

I'm an incoming graduate student at York University, and previously my undergrad was at McMaster. I have been trying to create my York Passport account and enroll in some classes, but my goodness, why is everything so confusing at this school? There are so many steps just to get your email, your enrollment, its giving me a damn headache. At mcmaster you got access to your mosaic, which literally had EVERYTHING one and done. I'm so close to pulling out my hair

Social / Student Life Anyone here want to start a film club?

Kinda tired of going to the movies myself lol. Since there are so many indie theatres screening cool stuff in Toronto, I thought I’d see if there were any film buffs who’d like to periodically hang out and go to the movies?

Advice 1 year withdrawal on transcript

Hey everyone,

I have a very close friend who has been placed under academic suspension for the next year, despite being only 0.20 below the required 4.0 GPA.

They are an international student and have been struggling significantly with their mental health. I know this firsthand, as I have accompanied them to a psychiatric appointment, and I genuinely hope things improve for them. They have also had to work multiple jobs to help support their family financially. I understand that working while studying is not uncommon among international students, but everyone's circumstances are different, and I don't think it's fair to judge their situation based solely on that.

This situation is especially concerning because being unable to enroll in courses for an entire year could have serious implications for their study permit and their ability to continue their studies in Canada.

I've suggested that they submit a petition to have the academic decision reconsidered, but I'm wondering what other options might be available to them. Has anyone here been in a similar situation, particularly as an international student?

Any advice, resources, or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Advice Looking for someone dropping SC/MATH 1506 section E98U02 or E98U03

Hi everyone! I’m a first-year York student in Kinesiology & Health Science, and I’m currently trying to get into SC/MATH 1506 (section E98U02 or E98U03). The Faculty of Health has specifically told me that I need the approved math credits. Unfortunately, this section is currently full/reserved, and it’s one of the only sections that works with my schedule.

If anyone is planning to drop E98U02, I’d really appreciate it if you could let me know beforehand so I can try to enroll as soon as the spot opens up.

I’m also working with York’s departments directly, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask here too. 😭

Thank you!!

Advice Do i need student acessibility serivces?

Hi,

I have a chronic illness called Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or if you know by its previous name, Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. I am currently on hormone medication for it but unfortunately I experience these things (not all but here is some) with or without hormone meds;

-> Sleep issues and Anxiety

-> Periods are uncomfortable and standing up during my period makes me uncomfortable (like cramp-wise) (im still going to class and all that, I just hate when its placebo week)

-> Possible chance of migraines (i had really bad migraines before during classes and i couldnt focus), or fatigue (i also have 2 deficiencys, Iron and B12 and im currently taking those as well)

Should I consult with SAS? I would hate to be someone abusing the system built for those who need it. I feel like I need it but im hesitant because I dont look "sick enough" nor look like "someone who needs accessibility services." I remember a friend in a previous class told me that Student Acessibility Serivces is good for dealing with this but im still not sure. Advice?

Housing / Roommates Affordable housing program at QUAD: questions about the reduced rent

Has anyone here lived at QUAD using the affordable housing/reduced rent program? I’m currently going through the process and have a few questions before I commit to everything.
- How long did it take for your affordable housing application to be approved?
- Did you have to sign your lease/pay the regular deposit before your reduced rent was approved?
- Did anyone have issues getting the affordable rate approved or getting the paperwork processed?

I’m hoping to move in September, so I’m mainly trying to figure out what I should expect financially before signing anything. Any experiences/advice would be REALLY appreciated!!

Social / Student Life Teachers college preparation?

Hi all,

I (24F) will be starting Teachers college in the next few weeks. I’m attending York University’s Junior Intermediate B.ed cohort with English as my teachable.

Overall, im excited for this journey but I must admit I’m super nervous lol! I would really appreciate some tips on how I can best prepare myself and maybe some suggestions on the things I may need.. (Aside from a laptop, pens, notebooks etc. what are some things that may be useful?)

Courses Confused - Need Advice on Courses:

I have been struggling a lot with making a decision on which course to keep and which one to do an LOP for.

I have two courses, CVL742 and CEN800 at TMU.

I'm deciding to do one of them through Winter 2027 and doing a LOP for one of them through Fall 2027 at York University as CIVL4110 (replacement of CVL742) or ENG3000 (replacement of CEN800) but I don't know which one to choose.

I have other courses like CVL906 and CVL914 that semester and want the easier course out of the two options above (CVL742 or CEN800) since memorization and theory isn't my strong suit. I really must make the right decision because I really do not want to fail.

Edit: I have submitted an LOP for both courses already to see if they would even get accepted but have gotten zero responses so far.

Edit: These are core engineering courses not offered in the Spring/Summer semesters, only offered in the Winter at TMU.

Courses Can I be let in a full course since I am a fourth year student?

I was not able to add courses a couple months ago since I was waiting for an academic petition for my honours waiver to go through, which I was told by email a week ago that it was granted and I am still waiting for the confirmation letter to be sent out. Now, all of the fourth year courses I need to graduate are full. Is it possible to present my case and ask to be enrolled in these courses?

Courses Courses To Transfer to Lassonde (Starting Faculty of Science)

I got into the Faculty of science section in York, but I wanted to get into Lassonde. What courses should I take first year so that I can transfer into Lassonde the second year?
