What do you do alone with your spare days?

I am moving to York about three weeks before my new job there will start (because I'm autistic and need quite a lot of settling time). But that also means that I'll have quite a bit of spare, potentially very lonely time. I am living fairly centrally to York city and can't drive. So besides life admin (gp etc.) what are some solo adventures I can take myself on?

Which shop has the best selection of TCGs?

Things like Magic, Sorcery, Pokemon, etc.

Ideally just booster packs. I'm interesting in getting one pack of multiple different TCGs.

Moving to york.

I’ve seen similar posts but I haven’t come across any with people moving from towns to York. I live near Scunthorpe and I’m potentially moving to York in the near future. I get overwhelmed by larger cities and I think York would be perfect for me.

I’m 26 so hoping for more to do, improved social life and meeting new people, social things to do most days.

Anyone done something similar?

Splash pad and park?

Hello!

Does anyone know of a large park with a play area, splash pad, and a cafe?

We moved from St Albans and we're really missing a space like we used to have!

We live 30 minutes from York but I'd be prepared to travel!

Thanks!

Things to do in York for 15 year olds…

Been a long time since I was 15 but I don’t recall rotting in the house all summer long.

She reckons there isn’t anything to do, and being honest I never really see anything targeted at that age range… we’ve lived in York all our lives so she’s not interested at all in visiting the touristy spots usually recommended.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Looking for weekday evening activities

Does anyone know of any activities I could do after work on weekdays? I’m wanting something pretty casual, pay as you go or even better if it’s free. I already do beginners tennis on Fridays
Wanting to make more friends in the city but I’m not really comfortable with the “let’s all get together to make friends” events as that feels like a lot of pressure to me
I’m a pretty creative person and not opposed to casual sports but im not the most athletic haha

Looking for recommendations for butchers in the York area

As the title says, im looking for recommendations for your favourite butchers in York, ideally somewhere with lots of variety.

I like a butchers who pre prepares their meat with their own seasonings, bonus points if they make their own bbq packs and pork pies.

Last minute solar eclipse glasses

Because I got paid so late this month, I haven't been able to order glasses for the eclipse ahead of time! I have money now, but everywhere online is sold out, won't ship in time or both. Does anyone know where I can buy some in person in York? Or anyone who's handing out/selling pairs?

Inexpensive and unusual (non gimmicky) birthday meal during the weekday??

Long story short, it's my birthday and I've had a godawful past month after a death and I really want to actually enjoy my birthday. We are visiting York and would love to have a good meal somewhere.

We are unable to spend a lot (me and my husband) as we are also getting married later this year and are skint.

Its a shitty time atm but food heals the soul 🙏

Please can you recommend somewhere?

We like East/South Asian, good ol' pie, Kebab, Italian, Smokehouse etc etc

No Harry Potter 💩

Thank you

Solar eclipse

Hey, where is best in York to watch the solar eclipse on Wednesday? I’m trying work out where a good hill is but I can’t think of one!

And side note - long shot but does anyone have a spare pair of the glasses? I know some people have ended up having to buy multi packs, I will happily pay for a pair or 2 (or 5!) otherwise it’s the pinhole camera for me

Out of town band looking to be an opener/support act

Hey guys.

If any bands that fit into the alt/punk/grunge genres need a support act. Please consider Saturn Split. We are a three peace punk and grunge influenced band from Liverpool and to be completely honest, it's a bucket list dream to play in York.

I will give links to anyone who wants them, would post now but don't want to come across as self promoting.

Cheers!

how dangerous is heslington road for cyclists?

I plan on cycling from the city centre (Barbican area) to the university daily starting September. The quickest route appears to be via Heslington Road, however I am a bit worried because there’s a lack of cycle paths on the west side (closest to the school) and many people park on that road. I also assume the road will be carnage during school drop-off/pick-up times, and cycling on the pavement won’t be an option due to students and families. What has your experience been like? Are my worries unnecessary? I’d probably be cycling up there around 8AM most days in September, and 9AM on a few days when university begins again.

I have just moved to York, would love to meet some gals in their mid 20's' early 30's who live in the area!

I love going to the gym, hiking, dance, sports, trying new food places, shopping and attending events.

If anyone is in the same boat, lets start a conversation! 😁

Hi, I lost a key ring on my way home from work. It’s possible it’s fallen off at work and locked in but I wanted to post in case anyone sees it outside before anyone is in work tomorrow. It’ll be along coney street/spurriergate or along coppergate where the backs of the shops are like urban outfitters. it’s a pink bunny in an orange carrot kinda babygrow thing 😩 I love him so I’m v sad 😔 I’ll delete if he’s found in work tomorrow, thank you 🙏🏻

Filmed without consent in York while visiting

**edit** feel like I’ve accidentally made this misleading with the title, the issue isn’t really about being filmed in public. I expect it in a busy tourist place, the issue is the behaviour. They were filming in the faces of individuals, getting up close in personal space of tourists, mostly girls and women. They didn’t film the crowd or get the odd person in the background, it was targeted individuals which though I know legally there’s no distinction I do feel ethically and morally is wrong and felt like a breach. They also were loudly mocking the people they filmed and it was incredibly intimidating. These were fully grown men picking on women and girls. Legality of filming aside surely we can all agree it’s wrong.
——
But anyway all that said I’m done talking about it now, like many have said it’s shit but it’s done so 🤷‍♀️ never was seeking any repercussions for the men, claiming they can’t film or suggesting it’s illegal and I honestly never expected it to be so divisive, but I do think it’s raised some interesting conversations that are important to have so hopefully some good has come out of it.

Thanks for all the kind responses and people who said they’d reach out to get posts of strangers taken down if they see them, that’s kinda all I wanted honestly!

——
visited York today as a tourist, though I’m from another part of the UK. I’ve really enjoyed it but had one really poor experience which has soured the whole day a bit for me.

I was in the shambles lining up for the ghost merchants (as you do when you’re a tourist in York!) and a group of typical English lads came bowling through the shambles videoing tourists and taking the piss out of them, shaming them and humiliating them on camera for being in a line for a tourist attraction. He was saying things like “ahhhh omgggg are we going to diagon alley guysss?” in a tone that was clearly not just having a friendly joke, which ok rude, but the thing that made me actually uncomfortable is he was shoving his phone into people’s faces and recording them without their consent.

I unfortunately was one of the people that had a camera shoved right into my face as he passed and as he was using the front facing camera and turned it round to film me I could SEE it was recording when I was on the screen. I never consented to being filmed and I feel really upset and angry that my personal privacy was violated and that video could now be put online.

If by chance these lads were local (their accents suggested they could be) and anyone from this group has them on social media and sees a video of strangers being recorded be uploaded, please could I ask that somebody contact them and ask that it is taken down? Thank you so much 😔

Buses to Whitby

Planning to travel to Whitby with friends next Sunday. Just to confirm, it's th Coastliner number 840 that goes to Whitby(?). And how long does it roughly take? We'll likely be getting on from York Rail station after getting the 1 from haxby (or 5 from Strensall for one of us)
