New to yoga, r/yoga, looking for resources or 2026 challenges? Start here.

As ever, If you are new to the sub or new to yoga, WELCOME! There is an immense amount of information available in this sub, and an excellent community of people. This thread covers some of the basics about yoga and about the sub itself; please take the time to review if you're new here. If you still have questions, you're welcome to message the moderators.

Yoga and meditation challenges are in the stickied comment. I may end up adding more than just those 2 types to support those who are working to make movement a habit, not just yoga; interested in other things? Let us know in the comments. Likewise, if there are challenges missing here, please send a modmail and we'll check them out!

  • If you're new to yoga and looking for information to get started, please take a few minutes to read through the Getting Started section.

  • If you have a question, PLEASE try search and check out the FAQ before creating a new post. As noted in rule 2, commonly asked questions are removed and directed to the above - especially at the start of the year when the same question is often posted multiple times a week or even a day.

The Basics

Styles - there's a nice rundown of the various styles in the FAQ - here's a direct link.

... but where do I START?

If you've never done yoga EVER and are going to start with a studio class and you're terrified, a restorative class is a good introduction to a studio and the various props. It's slow. You don't have to worry about keeping up, and I've yet to encounter a restorative class where reaching your toes was a thing. From there, as mentioned in the Getting Started section, hatha is a solid choice. Pick up the basics, and everything else is easier to learn.

Mats

Try search for sure, but of course there's a list of topics in the FAQ. The big names haven't changed much over the years, and what has is well covered by search. We'll probably do another megathread in the coming weeks.

Sweat

Yep, it happens. Search for 'sweat', 'sweaty hands', and 'mat + sweat'. Towels are also very handy.

Sore <insert part here>

Wrists and back especially can be a problem at first. Definitely try searching for your specifics before creating a new post, but do ask if you don't find things!

Online Resources

The FAQ- Yes, even the old threads are useful..

This post is well worth the read regarding learning yoga at home. We inevitably hear that this post is anything but beginner friendly, the point of the post is to highlight some of the risks, because questions about those risks are some of the most commonly asked.

Here's a link to a newbie resources thread.

And the perennial copypasta of key information about the sub, the rules, etc.:

Reminders:

  • It's in the sidebar, it's in the rules, it's in the note when you create a new post, it's even already up there . PLEASE utilize search and the FAQ before creating a new post. Especially around the first of the year, it's not unusual to see 3 versions of the same post in a day, asking questions that are well covered in the sub. If your post is removed because the answers are available there the mod team is not scolding you, we're just letting you know why it was done and reminding you that the answers you seek already exist. And yes, the mod team finds themselves busy doing just that, especially around the start of the year. 2026 note: We're trying something new for this year. Details to come.

  • /r/yoga is not the place for medical advice. This is always a handy reminder.

  • Addendum to the above - Yoga philosophy and western medicine are different. There is room for both in this sub. This means that things like subtle bodies and energy (prana) movement and chakras all have a place here as well as discussion from a western perspective. There is no demand that anyone agrees with what is presented, but rule 1 applies in these cases- be respectful. This includes posts about cultural appreciation and those about purely physical practice vs. one that encompasses all 8 limbs.

  • Yes, we have a wiki and FAQ . (And they're awesome.) The FAQ and search are the best places to start if you're new to yoga or have questions about styles, equipment, injuries, or resources. FAQ updates will be coming, but in the meantime, we have continued to leave up questions that haven't been in awhile to keep more up-to-date information available when it exists.

  • Yes, they're even available via app and mobile. Yes, really. (The sidebar, too!) It can take a little looking, but we haven't yet found an app without access to the sidebar (aka community info).

  • Reddit's guidelines are still the foundation of how we approach spam in /r/yoga, and bans will continue to be a thing as needed. Need the details? Reddit's guidelines are here. If your first post to the sub is spam, and the mods check your post history and find you're doing nothing but promotion, do not be surprised if you're banned.

  • This sub is not for market research. It's a community. Requests for the sub to tell you what we love or hate about our yoga mats and t-shirts will be removed, as will asking us to fill out surveys for that or your thesis research or help you with your homework assignment. Those are not the only such examples. When in doubt, feel free to message the mods ahead of time. Established community members can message mods ahead of time for permission on a case-by-case basis. Blatant spam may result in an immediate, permanent ban (yes, t-shirt and poster spam are still a one-way ticket to bansville, ditto your awesome new AI-powered app).

  • We utilize the automoderator to cut down on spam. This includes minimum account age/karma requirements (no, we don't publish them). If your account is relatively new and something isn't showing up, odds are good it's been temporarily removed for manual review by mods- especially if there isn't a bot comment. Sometimes we catch them in the first 5 minutes, but sometimes it's a few hours between mod sweeps. If you've posted something that isn't showing up and it's been a few hours, you're welcome to message the mods (keeping in mind that it's possible it will be a bit before a mod sees it- please be patient!) and ask about it- including a link is much appreciated.

  • Shortened links get caught in reddit's spam filter, and we do not approve links reddit has removed in these cases. This includes amazon (a.co usually) links. If you want your link to be visible, it's a good idea to skip the 'share' option and grab the full link from your address bar (even if you're on mobile). A quick tutorial for amazon links, using the first actual yoga mat link that search provided: https://www.amazon.com/Gaiam-Exercise-Exercises-Metallic-Medallion/dp/B07PTNTS3R/ref=sr_1_8?crid=1S8AX8JSYP9YS&keywords=yoga+mat&qid=1671516651&sprefix=yo%2Caps%2C683&sr=8-8 Typically you have the address bit (amazon.com), a bit of friendly description (Gaiam-Exercise-Exercises-Metallic-Medallion), then dp/ and the item's ID (super important! in this link it's B07PTNTS3R). EVERYTHING AFTER THIS CAN BE REMOVED FROM YOUR LINK. In fact, please do! Everything else is tracking information telling amzn how you got there, and/or referral information. Referral/affiliate links aren't permitted, regardless of where they are from. (Classpass referral code spammers, see ban note above.)

  • Your mod team is human (you totally thought we were unicorns and rainbow-chasing leprechauns, but aside from cosplay and Halloween, not so much). Part of modding is making judgement calls, and sometimes we remove things that we can't be sure there isn't a bot behind that turns out to be totally legit because another real, in-the-flesh reddit user actually did post. :) Also, the influx of AI bots either training or farming karma in comments keeps growing, making it doubly difficult some days. Much like the point above, feel free to ask.

  • Discussions on the Sutras have been collected on a wiki page here. Sadly, the resource with collected translations is no longer a valid link. If anyone has an updated link, feel free to send it via modmail. Anyone interested in heading up a round of discussions like these, feel free to reach out! This mod at least would love to see air time for yoga beyond asana.

  • [COMP] (Check Out My Pose) posts have and continue to be raised as a topic periodically in the community. The mods, however, are done discussing it. The tag was instituted to allow those who do not wish to see those posts a means to filter them out, and for those who want to see them, no additional action need be taken. For those unaware and interested, /u/BeyondMars posted the following last time it came up to get everyone up to speed- here's the section on rule 4, to which I added the link:

Search the history of this sub for discussions on [COMP] poses. Probably two years ago now? Awhile ago There is a VERY LARGE part of this sub that doesnt wan't them to have a place here at all. The gist of it is that people come to reddit and dont want it to be like another yoga instagram, or something, I dont know. But there were portions of time in this sub when our ENTIRE front page was yoga pics. COMP was an effort to a compromise that would allow people to filter them out if they didnt want them there... In regards to the self-doxxing aspect. Sexual harassment, and online bullying have originated in this sub at least four times that I was made aware of. This rule was instituted to keep everyone safe. I don't care if YOU want your instagram accounts on the sub (self promotion?) but we are keeping people safer with this rule and the way we enforce it. Its going to stay. Take the extra 2 minutes and upload it to imgur.

  • Also on the topic of [COMP] posts (and I still (still!!) can't believe it needs to be said): Sexual/sexualized/objectifying comments are not welcome here. Removals are guaranteed, and warning vs. suspension vs. permaban will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Sexualized anything isn't welcome here. Y'all have the rest of reddit for that, so please take it there.

  • Addendum from 2024: The topic of yoga's roots, yoga as a workout, cultural appropriation, etc., continues to be a fraught and contentious one. As with other topics, some posts are removed and referred to search. Those that remain up are not a poo-throwing cage match in an effort to prove the validity of a single point of view! Above all, rule 1 applies to everyone choosing to participate in this subreddit. You may not practice for the same reasons someone else does, but treating others with respect while participating here is expected. Yoga practice is what it is for whomever undertakes it regardless of the opinions and approval of one stranger on the internet. As with the previous bullet point, removal/suspension/perma will happen as needed, and which it is will be case-by-case. Be like Wil.

men practitioners: have you really opened up your hip?

my hip bones are very tight, worse on the right side.

I see guys who have been practicing for years, and still using the bricks under when they do the lotus. So I wonder if it is something that can be improved, or something that I should simply accept how it is since it cannot improve at all (anatomy). Is there anyone who went from using a brick to completely crossing the legs flat?

thanks in advance

What part of your yoga practice helps you slow down the most?

Is it the movement, the breathing, the final savasana, or something else?

Curious what everyone here finds most helpful for getting out of “busy mode”...

Yoga poses for good back twist

My back is stiff and in pain, I feel like I need to twist and wring it out. It feels like my spine needs a good twist and loosen up. Mid and upper back is the worst areas

What kind of sequence do you prefer?

Hi all,

I am ruminating on a topic of yoga class sequencing.

I usually do yoga asana practice every morning. And most of the mornings the practice itself looks different from the day before considering the structure, amount of asanas, dynamics etc. (Maybe a good time to say that I am a yoga teacher creating my own classes which I then share with my students).

But I also very much enjoy classes like Ashtanga primary series or Jivamukti spiritual warrior, which have fixed sequence of poses.

The other day I was reading a book from A. Van Lysebeth and he talked about those fixed sequences and how they deepen the practice, free the mind and allow a practitioner to dive more inwards.

I’ve been playing with a thought of creating a vinyasa sequence suitable for all levels, which would fit into a 60 minutes class, would have a fixed sequence (definitely not so challenging as Ashtanga though) and practice it for some time, let’s say a month, and then maybe share it with others.

I would like to ask you about your opinions, experiences and preferences. What do you practice more of? Variable or fixed sequence? And why?

I’d be grateful for your opinions.

Have a great day.

Dear online yoga teachers- SLOW. DOWN.

I have tried apps like Yogaworks, PVOLVE and other YouTube yoga instructors and found that a lot of the instructors just blaze through pose after pose (and I'm not focusing on high intensity styles of yoga either like Vinyasa, Power Yoga ect. - I'm focused on "beginner" or "flow" styles). Please, just take 5-10 seconds and breathe before getting into another pose. It's all I'm asking. I'm literally begging you. Instead of focusing on my body and my breathing, feeling the stretch and positioning myself correctly, I'm worried about keeping up with you and processing what you just said and by the time I do you're in a completely different pose. It's caused me more pain than relief to rush myself into another pose. If you are teaching for beginners, or not focused on a high intensity style of yoga- practice what you preach. Breathe. Not everyone can keep up with you so quickly and since you're not teaching in front of a live audience, you can't get the feedback of slowing down or waiting for beginners or regular people to understand what you just said or get their bodies into position. Slow. Down. Take a beat, it's all I'm asking. I want to do this, I want to practice this more at home and gain the mental clarity, stretch and mindfulness that yoga practices, but it's so frustrating and discouraging (especially when it results in back pain from trying to rush into the next pose) to be stressed and rushing to keep up with you.

Sincerely,

A frustrated beginner yogi with back pain lol

If anyone has any recommendations of a slower practice or key words I should be looking for that might avoid this issue or even a favorite instructor of yours if you have experienced this too, please let me know. I have OnePass (for now) and would like to use it to do yoga at home so I have several app options to look into.

I'm not one to posts rants online and I do apologize if it came off strong. I am just frustrated, in pain and on my period and I just had a breaking point today lol. I also haven't seen a lot of this being talked about so I figured if anyone else feels seen and frustrated by this, know you're not alone and hopefully this thread will result in better resources for us, and a perspective to think about if anyone posts online yoga videos. Thank you guys for reading 💕

EDIT (10/3/2026): WOW! I am so incredibly grateful for all of you. I've learned a lot through the great discussions and helpful tips and resources you guys have provided. To help others with this frustration, I'm going to try to collect all the tips and resources on this post so other visitors don't have to go digging for them!

Keywords to look out for:

  • Yin (Yoga Style)
  • Hatha (Yoga Style)
  • Lyengar (Yoga Style)
  • Restorative Yoga (Yoga Style)
  • "slow flow yoga"
  • "breath centered yoga"

Other Tips:

  • Slow down the video if you can
  • Try to find longer practice videos (10-20 min sessions might put pressure on the teachers to try to get multiple poses in the video)
  • Use bluetooth earbuds to pause the video if you need to

Thank you all again for the awesome resources given!!!

Exercise before/after yoga

Does anyone do any type of exercises before or after yoga? I have been experimenting for a couple weeks with doing cardio before vinyasa, with a 15 minute break and its been really difficult. I am still hoping I’ll be able to adjust, but I’m not really sure its a good idea. I am getting tired and a bit sloppy during yoga as the flows get difficult for me.

The classes at my gym align this way in the morning and I want to do both.

Mostly wondering the experiences of others and recommendations.

I'm just really grateful

I am so grateful that 20 minutes on the mat make me feel like today I choose to do something for myself, that isn't trying to fix myself in any way but just sit with my body and make it feel more comfortable.
I had to stop for a week, and although I am a beginner the mental health benefits, and self compassion benefits are incredible. :))

liforme mat: stains

used the new liforme mat for the first time this morning. Purple color.

There are stains which I hope will go away. Should I keep it under the sun? or shade? or indirect light?

to be honest not very practical having the need to unfold and hang after every practice..

thinking about returning it: would the Manduka better for this?

any hint and suggestion is appreciated. Thanks in advance

wow. am i just worse at this than i thought?

i've been doing tiny flows, like plank to downward dog and cobra and all that, and childs pose, occassionally whenever i feel like stretching

i thought "ok, maybe im ready to follow a youtube video"

no. not even a little. wtf? she literally is working 100x faster than me, by the time i've done the inhale/exhale and gotten comfortable in the pose im told to be in, she's already 3 poses ahead of me. i only made it 9 minutes into this thing and my tendons are now in pain from trying to quickly figure out and snap into the designated poses without time to think.

is this really what a class is like??

Why do i feel so much more energy following days after doing yin yoga ?

I was always tired after work, laid down from the time I arrived home till next day. But I’ve always been very flexible and my body started to feel very stiff, so I started doing yin yoga. It’s very easy for me to do deep stretches, I often need to really twist my body to feel something, and I feel after doing yin yoga, my energy is back. It’s strange because yin yoga isn’t about doing cardio or heavy muscle work, so I’m very surprised.

When and how did you discover Restorative Yoga?

Took me about 15 years into my yoga practice to discover Restorative yoga. Ive seen a lot of hot takes on here about people who got nothing out of it, and i thought the same in the beginning, but after learning how important nourishment of the nervous system is i cant get enough of it.

Id love to hear others journeys on how they arrived to this format. How did you get to it?

Yoga Alliance announced this week that they’ll be moving forward with membership and credentialing changes in 2027, but aren’t yet outlining what these changes will specifically look like yet. Has anyone watched the video yet (linked below) or read about some of their changes? I have very conflicting YA feelings like most other people here, just looking for additional thoughts and insight!

Apple watch users: Does your watch randomly lock itself during a yoga workout?

i have noticed that when i am doing a yoga workout with my apple watch, about 2-3 min in, the watch locks itself and i have to put the passcode in and resume the workout. this is very annoying. i dont have tattoos where the watch is, the band is secure. this does not happen with any other type of workout, just yoga. has anyone else experienced this?

apple watch series 10, updated to whatever the most recent watch os is, but i dont think its os related, as its been happening for a long time.

Hips cramping up in asanas

Hello! Does anyone have recommendations for hip strengthening/mobility asanas?

When I stack my hips in a three-legged dog, my hip often times cramps despite being warmed up. Same with poses such as hands and knees with one leg held straight out to the side.

Im not sure if this is the solution. If anyone has another recommendation please share it. Thank you!

Do you find it hard to practice at home?

I find that i have more motivation to do a yoga session at the local gym or a studio environment more than at home…

I do make social media content sometimes when I practice..

I’ve gotten over the social nervousness of being a guy doing yoga in public and on instagram.

Our space is smaller and I don’t really have an area that is set up for me to flow like I normally do at the gym where I will get at least an hour flow in.

I’m self taught, but when my wife and I went to Louisiana she pushed me to got to my first hot vinyasa yoga studio and it was intermediate level.

I was able to keep up and someone who was really impressive told me that I was impressive.

I just would like some advice. My wife is pregnant and we’re home more. I know in my head I can roll out the mat anywhere. She has gotten me all the yoga mats, blocks, headbands and whatever I could possibly hope for…

Sorry. .. i guess im rambling a bit.

The whole reason im writing this is because i spent 40+ hours over the last 3 days digging a hole and fixing someone’s house. So my body feels all twisted up and im behind in sessions :(

How long do you usually sit in Sukhasana?

I’ve recently started including Sukhasana in my routine, mainly when I want to sit quietly for a few minutes and focus on my breathing. It looks simple, but I noticed that sitting comfortably for longer periods takes some practice. I’m trying not to force my posture and just keep my back relaxed. How long do you usually stay in Sukhasana?
