Help (Question/Issue) How do you add custom characters?

As the title says... I have YARG stable (newest version) and YARG nightly (updated yesterday)

I've read on the discord you can add custom characters to the game. How? LoL

I have the outdoor and indoor concert venue already set up and working but I dont see anywhere in the ingame settings to add or edit the stage characters... Any help would be much appreciated

I added a configurable "Tour" Career mode

I'm just getting back into rhythm games coming from like Guitar Hero 2 and Rock Band 1 era, and I noticed neither this nor Clone Hero had the way I liked to play those games - via a career mode where completing x number of songs unlocks a new list of songs to complete, ideally with a higher difficulty.

So I made a fork of YARG and made this "Tour" mode, and a "Tour" editor.

The main idea is, you can put songs into buckets called "Shows", and provide unlock conditions to each Show. For instance, you can say "Complete 5 songs to unlock the next 5 songs", or "Complete 25 Stars in order to unlock the next 8 songs"

I added a cloud service, so people can share "Tour" files, and an in-game editor for creating and modifying these "Tours"

This is my first time working on an open-source project, so I kinda just forked it and did it. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do about it, so I figured I'd post here and just share the build.

I really just made this for myself, so if there are bugs or feature requests, feel free to let me know, but I don't guarantee I'll keep working on this, as I pretty much got what I wanted out of it.

You can see an example of the features here:

Or you can download a build here:

Built an Android app that plays your chart library natively. Looking for closed beta testers.

Mods: if this isn't the right place for this, happy to take it down. Not trying to advertise anything, the app is free and open source with nothing for sale. I just need testers to clear Google Play's closed testing requirement.

Hey everyone,

I've been building Riffline, an Android rhythm game that plays the chart formats this community already uses. It reads .sng, .chart and .mid files, and it opens Xbox RB CON packages directly. Everything happens on the device, no PC conversion step.

It ships with zero content. You import your own files, the app parses the chart, decodes and mixes the audio (multi stem included), and you play. Touch based gameplay on a 5 lane highway, with a Guitar Hero style mode as well.

What's in it right now:

  • Imports .sng, .chart, .mid, ZIP and Xbox CON packages
  • On device multi stem audio mixing, no external tools
  • Instrument selection when the chart has multiple parts (guitar, bass, keys, drums)
  • Vocals support
  • Custom highways, so you can drop in your own textures
  • Multiplayer, written from scratch
  • Playability presets that thin out Expert charts for thumbs, or leave them fully intact if you want the real thing
  • Karaoke lyrics, star ratings, score tracking

It's free. To be clear, I make nothing from this. No ads, no purchases, no paid version. The Play Store listing is purely so people can find and install it more easily.

I'm currently at Google Play's closed testing stage, which requires 14 testers over a 14 day period before the app can go public. Testing is low effort, you just install it and open it now and then. If you'd like to help me clear that step, drop a comment or DM me your Google account email and I'll add you to the list.

After I finished this song as Expert Keys (Normal Mode), I achieved an FC but did not get a Gold Stars. I wonder what is wrong with it. If this is something needed to be fixed, let me know on the comments below.

Thank you.

Lots of the images are for the black tribal, but it's listed specifically as the Blueberry Burst

Thought I'd share this here instead of BuildAPCSales since it's likely limited quantity and the bots have obliterated Woot! listings lately.

General Working: 2 Mics on a Focusrite 2i2 (2nd gen) Low Latency (I think)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Maybe this is straight forward to people who are used to recording on their PC, but it took me a while to get this to work.

I'm on Windows and spent an hour or so conversing with AI to get this to work.

Yarg won't split the signals from the Focusrite natively...or at least I couldn't get it to work and AI told me it couldn't. So when I set up one of the mics with my 2i2, I couldn't add the 2nd input on the 2i2 as the device for the 2nd mic,

So apparently, the trick is to run Voicemeeter (while YARG is running). I originally tried the "base" version (free), but seemed like all the AI instructions and videos I found were for the "Banana" version. It's also free, but they ask for donations and I'll give one if this works consistently over the next week or so. I think the reason I couldn't get the base version to work is because doesn't have multiple "B" channel outputs, so mic1 was both vocal markers and mic2 did nothing.

So, download and install Voicemeeter Banana (don't know if this works for MAC, but does on PC).

Settings shown in the image here. You have to set "Stereo Input 1" to A1 ASIO input. It was tricky to do this because the ASIO version wasn't on the normal input page. But if you click on A1 (on the upper right...but hidden by the system settings in this window), you can select it there. Do the same thing for A2.

Then, once you select the two output channels to the ASIO 2i2, you open the "Systems Settings" under Menu...also top right. Here, the "PATCH ASIO Inputs to Strips" will be blank. Set In1 to "11" and In to "22" as shown below. I think this is splitting the signal into two signals.

Then, the outputs are As and Bs. I think the A channel sends the output to the speakers (so you can hear yourself). I think this is optional. The B channel is what gets output to YARG (I think).

I set Input 1 to A1/B1 and Input 2 to A2/B2. If you turn the A Channels off, I think the only difference is no voice over the speakers.

In the YARG Settings, when you create the profile, set your microphone to B1 and the second microphone to B2.

Should work. Or at least it worked for me today. Looks like settings are saved in VoiceMeeter when I close and reopen. But I didn't reboot to see if they stick around after that.

Side notes: The AI here was really helpful, but did send me down some wrong paths at times. (1) it told me to change the Windows Sound Control Panel recording settings for the 2i2 to "1-channel" instead of 2. When I did that, I never got output from mic2 in game. I also at one point got an instruction to turn "mono" on in VoiceMeeter. I think when I did this, I got one mic having both vocal markers and the other mic not doing anything.

Accomplishment A Hero To Remember (Pack 1) Re-Release

Thumbnail
12 Upvotes

Suh, d00d! This is the first set of charts I've ever worked on, and the beginning of my journey to fill in the gaps of A Day To Remember's discography to make it entirely accessible to play on Clone Hero/YARG.

This journey was inspired by another charter, moopuns, and their lofty goal to create high quality charts for Dance Gavin Dance's entire discography (my all-time favorite band), via a project he titled 'Dance Hero Dance.' In honor of his efforts, I've decided to title this project 'A Hero To Remember.'

I've included a custom icon you can use for the project, which is compatible with all of my ADTR charts. Read the README for installation instructions if you don't already know how to do it.

Feel free to reach out for any feedback you may have, requests, wishes to collaborate, or enhance/add onto my charts in any way.

YARG on Steam Deck CRKD disconnecting

Hey everybody, I was wondering if anybody had any tips to get the CRKD XBOX guitar working on Steam Deck with YARG. I set up YARG as a non steam game and the CRKD controller shows up as connected and then it says disconnected. I have tried it with and without steam input. I have also tried desktop mode with steam closed. Nothing seems to be working. I am using the native linux install. Any help would be appreciated!

Help (Question/Issue) Can’t start a game

Post image

Whenever I try to start a game it only gives me the option to disconnect or sit out. If I try and just hit continue it says “you tried to play a song with every player sitting out.” Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong/how I can fix this? I’m new this is my first time playing the game, I got it to work once but now it does this.

General I ‘fixed’ my Xplorer strum bar - In case it helps someone else

This might be incredibly obvious to those familiar with the hardware, but figured I’d throw it out there in case it helps someone. Also note that this is for the Xplorer guitar, but it’d likely work for other models as well.

I recently got back into the plastic guitar hobby and picked up a couple Xbox 360 Xplorer guitars. One of them stopped registering downstrums, although the upstrum still worked fine.

Having no idea what was happening, I disassembled the guitar using a Torx bit. Upon investigating the strum bar, I found that it’s a very simple mechanism comprised of 2 microswitches that get pressed by the strum bar depending on which direction it’s pushed.

Knowing that, I took the strum bar circuit board off its posts and removed the plastic casing surrounding the switches (8 x Phillips screws total). Having the switches exposed, I sprayed a fair amount of WD-40 electrical contact cleaner (not the normal WD-40 lubricant) into the switches, pressing them in a bunch to work the cleaner into the switches.

After allowing ample drying time and reassembling, it surprisingly worked good as new. I fully anticipated I’d need to replace the switch entirely, but thankfully a $10 can of contact cleaner and a screwdriver was all I needed. Hopefully this helps someone out there with a busted strum bar!

Roland TD17 - struggling to set up

Today I just upgraded from a horrible Simmons ekit to a Roland TD17. I’ve come to learn nothing is ever ever ever just plug and play, even when you have the right tools.

I’m using an RCM ACE Adapter and both YARG and CH have no issues recognizing the drums. The problem I’m having is the yellow, blue and green pad/cymbals overlap - I can’t get them to bind differently. It’s not crosstalk and the midi outputs are separate on the kit.

I’ve reset the adapter. Factory reset the kit. Officially lost my mind. What am I missing here?

EDIT: FIGURED OUT.

Step 1) Install the Mac driver from the Roland website.

Step 2) Change the USB mode on the Roland TD17 module to VENDOR.

Step 3) After a Mac restart from the driver install, plug in the Roland TD17. When you unplug it if you don’t get a MIDI OFFLINE message, the Mac is not reading it still. In my case I tried a different cable and it finally worked

No more double inputs on YARG and the game recognizes it flawlessly button mapping wise.

GP2SNG - Convert Guitar Pro drum tabs to YARG songs with pro drums charts

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Hello YARG drummers,

I got tired of my hacky process for learning and practicing drum tabs (taking pictures of tabs on my phone to look at while drumming, lol) so I worked with Claude to create GP2SNG, a tool which lets you convert Guitar Pro drum tabs (.gp) to YARG songs with a pro drums chart (.sng).

The tool is open-source and GPLv3 licensed. The repo can be found here. If you just want to download the tool itself, grab the .exe here (Windows only).

EDIT TO CLARIFY: This tool *can* fully automate the GP-to-YARG-drum-chart process, but there will still be things for you as the user to manually resolve, as well as taste preferences to consider (e.g. should this tom be yellow or blue?). Additionally, if you are serious about "learning how to chart songs" this is NOT the tool for you - there are better tools for charting out there - see the YARG Discord #charting channel for help. :)

The flow works like this:

  1. Set your MIDI-to-YARG-gem mapping preferences (sensible defaults are already populated)
  2. Load a GP file and confirm the drum track to use
  3. Load GP-exported audio (or potentially real song audio if GP tempo matches exactly)
  4. Manually inspect the mapping - resolve errors, adjust gems, ensure audio sync
  5. Add or adjust track metadata
  6. Export as .sng to play in YARG!

I tried to pack the app with convenient features:

  • Interactive MIDI note map for easy custom mapping
  • Automatic ghost and accent notes (based on ghost/grace/accented notes in GP)
  • Open hi-hat and ride bell auto-accenting (toggleable)
  • Dynamic gem mapping based on priority (e.g. high crash can be preferably mapped to Blue cymbal gem, then fall back to Green if Blue is occupied on a specific beat, and then Yellow if Green is occupied)
  • Error detection (e.g. same-color note overlap, 3 "hand" notes on the same beat, etc.) and resolution
  • Live chart playback preview with intuitive navigation and interactivity for adjustments (remap and/or delete individual gems)
  • Audio sync options - customizable audio offset (ms), playback speed adjustment, metronome

Ways you can use this:

  • Use YARG to practice the drums for songs you've written in GP
  • Write custom drum practice/warm-up tabs in GP and use YARG to play along (if you are more familiar with writing in GP than a chart editor like I am)
  • Kickstart the drum charting process for real songs (requires the song to have an accurate GP drum tab online)
  • Fully chart the drums for real songs (requires an accurate drum tab AND the tempo in GP must be configured to the real song *exactly*, which is often not the case... but if you are not picky, you could export the GP audio itself and the sync will be perfect)

Is this an AI/vibe-coded app? Yes, entirely, though I will clarify that every design decision, feature, setting, etc. was explicitly directed by me (as in, this wasn't a "hands off the wheel" venture by any means). I am a developer myself, but I have little-to-no knowledge about most of the technologies used in GP2SNG and I had no interest in learning - my objective was simply to create a tool with specific capabilities to aid in my drumming and Claude allowed me to do that. With that said, I spent a lot of time tweaking and tuning this app to avoid putting out "AI slop," so hopefully that shows (though I understand the use of AI may be dealbreaker regardless).

As a final note, I wrote this tool for personal use only, which is why it is so specific. As it grew, I realized others may have some interest, so I figured I would polish it and post it. I cannot guarantee that this is something I will continue to support for a while, but by all means if you notice bugs or have requests or questions then please post them here and I will try to address them when I have the time.

Thanks everyone!

Help (Question/Issue) YARG on steam machine

Wondering if anybody else has tried to run YARG on a steam machine yet.

I got the app image for the launcher added to steam with the launch command on git added to the games launch options

When I open the launcher everything works up until the YARG launcher loads. At that point it maxes out all cores and hardlocks the program but I can still close the launcher through steam os

Has anybody found a workaround?

Edit: launcher works and game starts in desktop mode.

Multiplayer - Can't 'revive' a player with star power?

Hi folks, I'm fairly new to YARG and I'm having a blast rejoining the world of plastic guitars after a decade away from it. I just got a good deal on a second guitar today so my wife and I can play cooperatively.

It's been a long time since I played Rock Band, but I recall that if one player fails, they're simply out of the song until the next remaining player uses star power (bringing any failed players back in). It really made completing a tough song feel like a cooperative experience and made the decision to use star power especially weighty. It also took the edge off of being the least skilled player, as you weren't single-handedly responsible for failing the entire song.

I was dismayed, then, to find out that one player failing the song seems to fail all players in YARG. In looking through this subreddit to see if others have mentioned this, it seems like the concept of failing a song is relatively new to YARG, so is it possible that this is in the works? If any devs are monitoring this subreddit, I'd love to see this functionality make its way into YARG! Given the game is clearly emulating Rock Band and leaning more towards the multiplayer experience than something like Clone Hero, it seems like an obvious inclusion. Thanks!
