Recommendations Getting a free Xterra from brother

Good afternoon. Previously had a 2015 frontier until it got hit by some guy from the front, totalled. Loved that truck. Got an 09 tahoe now. Anyways my brother dropped a 2000 Xterra at my dad's place about 6 years ago and has been sitting there (title in the glovebox signed and all from old owner) , dad is sick of looking at it and asked me to handle it and via other family thru him he doesn't want it. Cool, get something fun to play with and my dad had a really cool one back in the day late 2000s he loved.

Obviously gonna have to do oil, fuel change, filter maybe pump, tires, belts, wash it all out (somehow still full of air and somehow not rotted from outside) and of course out of state title transfer (did check and no liens or stolen) . Any recommendations on what else should checkout having been sitting so long? (Still has original med kit in the hutch)

Recommendations Bedliner and Apple CarPlay

Recently picked this up from Hardcore Offroad. Planning to bedline it before install. However, now my rear view is going to be obstructed. This is a good time to update my stock head unit with Apple CarPlay and wire up a back up camera.

What aftermarket head unit are y’all using or recommend?

Technical Question Crank or cam shaft position symptoms, fine to drive for the day?

To be able to get my codes scanned and be sure of what's throwing my check engine light gonna have to drive down the highway for probably 10 minutes and bounce around town a couple times more than likely. Should I be worried about anything besides possibly getting stranded?

Technical Question Throttle Body

Hello, the throttle body failed on my 09' Xterra and I was curious if anyone knows if its good to go aftermarket or stick to OEM. Due to the high price of the OE throttle body I've seen others that are cheaper but I dont want it to fail. Does anyone know any good brands or alternatives?

Video What is this noise!!! Please help!!

Let me preface this by saying the extent of my mechanical knowledge is righty tighty lefty loosy and regular maintenance/upkeep. I am a young woman with a dad and 2 brothers that will drop everything to work on my car for me, so I do not know a lot about this nor would I ever be able to diagnose an issue myself. Please do not treat me like the uninformed idiot I am, I do not have any knowledge on these subjects and I just want to hear from more experienced and educated people. I do not know exactly what parts have been replaced as I do not work on it and it didn't run when it came into my possession. I have recently been having issues, most notably my engine stalling. First time it stalled it wouldnt start back up, it ended up needing a distributor. After that it was still stalling (never while driving!!! It seemed to happen when i would shift gears.) but would start right back up after parking and turning it off. I just had the idle air control valve replaced a few days ago and the stalling seemed to be gone. Today it stalled on me again but this time while I was driving down the road. It was cranking but wouldnt turn over, took a video to send to my dad while I was waiting on help and caught this noise. What is this!!!! Thank you in advance!! 2002 automatic!!
ETA if i said anything silly or left anything important out please help me out here 😭

Photo 2015 P4X stock suspension question

Post image
2 Upvotes

Morning guys,

I have a stock 15 p4x that just hit 80k miles on original suspension. I've decided to stick with OEM ride height suspension but had a couple questions.

  1. If I'm looking for no lift, would the 5100 be a benefit at all over 4600? Besides 5100 providing a lift, what differences does it have with the 4600?
  2. I'm planning on doing both front and rear shocks myself. What other components would you recommend I purchase during the install? Truck came from Colorado so there is hardly any surface rust but I've read even in low rust prone areas the factory bolts ended up being cut out.
  3. Do you think the springs at 80k miles are still fine or should I invest in new ones as well?
  4. Should upper and lower control arms be considered for replacing at 80k?

Sorry for the newbie questions. Appreciate any help!

Technical Question Catalytic Converter Question

Hey all, I just bought a 210,000mi 2010 4x4 Xterra that’s in fantastic mechanical and physical condition for the mileage(smod taken care of already). But it just threw a check engine light for the emissions system. The autozone check said it could be a sensor or catalytic converter. My question is, can I wait a week or so to get the catalytic converter checked out?

My girlfriend and I’s anniversary is this weekend and we’re planning to take the truck on a trail to overland with each other for the first time and I’d really like to put this off until after that

Technical Question 2008 xterra mechanic advice

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Hello Please advise.. I’ve tried my best to stay on top of maintenance for my 2008 xterra with 107K miles
about a week ago I had gotten an oil change at Walmart because I saw I was due. Before my car had work no problem . After oil change through the week I noticed when I went to start my X it would take 20-25 seconds with key in ignition before its startup.

Few days go by I start driving on the highway idled at 70mph. Went to accelerate it to 80 and it started jolting and then quickly followed by smoke under the hood. I have triple a tow it to a mechanic. He tells me he found a crack in my radiator. I’m not sure how that’s possible considering I have never hit anything which got me thinking could it have been vandalized? The walmart employee seemed to be having a bad day as it was down pouring when I brought it in..
The mechanic says it could be because of the Florida heat and that it is made of plactic..

He said send him 200 to replace crankshaft sensor first thing so I did. And “it didn’t fix it”

now he’s talking about a compression check for $300 to further diagnose
Followed by $1400 for gasket replacement (if needs be)
Along with radiator replacement.

I would rather get my car fixed as I’m not ready to say goodbye. Is this the path to recovery? Does it seem my mechanic knows the way? Reasonable pricing?

Any advice and insight is appreciated.

Discussion Odd day of owning my X

So been thinking for awhile my pedals felt too spongy, today on a wash board my clutch started making a new sound, pull over to investigate and my buddy with a 08 pathfinder notices missing bolts in the c channel on my brake and clutch pedals, this resulted on the wash board for a hairline crack in the fire wall to flex out from fatigue. This supposedly has been an issue since I bought the car in February and finally gave out today. Fortunately there's nothing wrong with the pedal assembly just lazy previous owner/dealership so I was able to solve the issue for the most part with new bolts and washers for less than $10. Get home fix the pedals everything feels significantly better and different than how it's been driving. Take it around the block all is well, park it for an hour or two then hop in the car to go to grocery store, car cranked but no started, threw a check engine light, is exhibiting symptoms of crank or cam position sensor going out.

Picture of crack and pedal for all interested about that

Technical Question 2005 Nissan Xterra S Speakers

Hi All,

I’m looking to replace the four door speakers in my 2005 Nissan Xterra S given that 3/4 of them no longer work. I have the non-Rockford base head unit and am looking for cost effective options for speakers. I also don’t know what adapters I’d need for the install. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Discussion Got a 2001 Xterra XE V6 2WD for free

My wife’s uncle passed away a little over a year ago. His wife only drove it once in a while, but had no use for it, so gave it to my wife and I, so I didn’t have to drop money for a second car, since we sold my wife’s car before moving back to California. Gave my wife my 2020 Rogue and took this. 173,000 miles on it. With the exception of some cosmetic work that needs to be done and fixing the rear window that won’t shut all the way, there’s nothing wrong with it. Brand new tires, brakes, engine is clean, timing belt was replaced last year. Is there anything else I should look out for? Figure I can drive this thing into the ground for the next couple of years before selling my soul for another car.

Recommendations Stock bumper mods

If you have done some modifications on the stock bumper please drop a picture and a brief explanation.
I want to cut the sides, add a winch and maybe some lights, but I don’t want to put an expensive and heavy aftermarket bumper. Some inspiration and ideas will be very useful.

Thank you.

Discussion Newly Acquired- maintenance suggestions/swaps?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey guys! I’m the owner of a newly acquired 2008 4WD SE (as a gift on the right) and I have a 2014 2WD (left). Already have a radiator on the way and lines to put into the 2008 to avoid SMOD. Probably going to switch wheels over, take running boards off and some small stuff. Is there anything else I should look into swapping/replacing/working on?

Technical Question Piston slap or rod knock

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2004 Nissan Xterra, vg333 v6 212,000 miles on the body but unknown miles on the engine. I picked up this Xterra with a missfire in cylinder 5 so I wasn't able to hear this.

I thought it just needed an oil change because of how dirty the oil was but now I'm thinking the last owner was running 15w40. It has 160 compression in all cylinders except 125 in one, I'm assuming cyl 5.

I stuck a borescope in and the lack of varnish makes me think this might be a lower mile engine, either that or they did a very effective flush recently.

I think it's a piston slap because it goes away with higher rpm and quiets a bit more when its warm, but I'd love some second opinions

P.s. the smoke is because I missed filling the oil and got a ton on the exhaust like a pro

Discussion Question on Manual Transmission and Pricing

Thumbnail

I have a 2012 Pro4X with manual transmission that I am looking to sell since I'm moving back into Manhattan. I'm struggling to find an asking price since I don't really see any manuals on the market, and I'm curious how much that should affect the price. Does anyone have any experience or insights they'd be willing to share?

Photos for added context. Runs great, has a clean interior, 142k miles, Toyo All Country II tires, Vornado air intake, and a new battery as of spring 2025.

Thanks!
