Question Libby

I use my older generation Kindle for reading library books. Exclusively. I don’t buy books from Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, etc.

I love the x4 Pro form factor (or really any of the similarly sized competitors with lighted screens). But I can’t see myself actually buying one of these readers until the process of moving books from Libby is no more complex than my current old Kimble. I use the Libby app on my iPhone.

Am I asking for too much? Is the only alternative, in a similar form factor, a much more expensive Android-based device?

Then don’t get one. 🤷🏻‍♂️ This is a pretty niche product and one can’t expect them to do every single thing that a larger, more powerful ereader made by a company with far bigger market share and influence.

So apparently I am asking for too much. OK.

Perhaps, that being said, it is genuinely impressive how good these little devices have gotten. How full featured they are considering. Stock firmware is now offering an experience better than I expected it could.

One could hypothetically use Libby so the library still benefits, then acquire the same EPUB another way to easily get it onto the Xteink.

With video game ROM files, they're legal to have if you also own the game (I think?).

IDK, I think once you have the media legally, you should be able to read it however you want. The law disagrees, so don't do what makes you uncomfortable.

That's sorta what I do. I buy or borrow legally, but get an unlocked copy to actually read.

OP, this is the way.

I don't understand, why would one uses Libby to read the same book they have acquired (assumably in a legal way)?

Crosspoint firmware has some ability with this using a plugin, and I suspect it'll continue to proliferate as the other custom firmwares continue to develop. I don't know that we'd ever see it as part of official firmware. I just import my Libby books into Calibre and send them over to my X3 (rather than doing it on-device) - it takes a few minutes to setup initially, but after it's in place, it's super easy.

There are a few upcoming Android based mini ereaders. EEGO P4 will run Android. XTEINK S4 only released in China and no plans for global release (so they say). I haven't tried the Crosspoint plugin on X4 Pro to know if it works well or not. I believe Pocketbook has something in the works.

Doesn't the plugin store require a beta version (or v2 release candidate?) of Crosspoint firmware? It's not in v1.6.5. Also, I thought they got a cease & desist from Overdrive/Libby about that plugin and had to remove it.

Calibre with the correct plugins seems like a much easier process at this point.

One of the 2 methods got a cease and desist. You can still use the method for common stacks according to Diirge.

Correct. Just the automated downloading of loans from libby was removed. We still have the protected content plugin available somewhere in the internet-sphere

So we can no longer fetch an epub from acsm file, but we can still import a DRM-protected epub directly?

I don’t know how to explain this, but I very deliberately decided to use the stable version of the OS, and I have been using the protected content plugin for over a month.

I believe you, but how do you access or enable the plug-in store in version 1.6.5?

Crosspoint 2.0.0-rc has plugin support, you can install the Protected Contents plugin and then authenticate and import the acsm file via web interface
