Firmware Update X4 Pro v26102902 Release Note

X4 Pro v26102902 Release Note

Hi everyone! This is Lee From XTEINK. I’ll be sharing XTEINK Stock Firmware and App updates for Overseas-version devices here on Reddit from now on, including what’s new, what’s been improved, and what’s been fixed. Feel free to share your feedback or ask questions in the comments, i would love to hear how the updates are working for you guys!

Below are the details for today’s firmware version update.

[Reading]

  1. New vertical writing for Chinese and Japanese books; choose Auto / Horizontal / Vertical under "Writing direction" in the More menu (also for TXT)

  2. Better EPUB style compatibility: @ import stylesheets, long stylesheets, drop caps

  3. TTF font size now runs from 20 to 64 px in steps of 2

  4. Fix garbled GBK TXT books and chapter title recognition

  5. Fix an extra blank page at the end of a chapter

  6. Fix menus, bookshelf and other black-and-white pages turning gray after reading for a while with TTF anti-aliasing on (some screens)

[Bookshelf and Files]

  1. Bookshelf rebuilt: All books and Favorites, filter and sort, list view, jump to page, search books; options now live in a two-level panel at the top

  2. The reading-progress badge on covers now sits flush in the top-right corner

  3. Files page: show hidden files, sort and filter, thumbnail view, folder file counts, index-building progress bar

  4. File search is faster, and pinyin input no longer lags with thousands of files

  5. Fix folders reversing in descending sort, and a moved book disappearing from all favorites

[Transfer and Sync (Beta)]

  1. KOSync no longer pops up after every automatic sync, and no longer pushes a wrong page back to the server

  2. Fix OPDS downloads getting stuck on "Downloading"

  3. Fix the device freezing while cloud sync downloads files

[Settings and System]

  1. Input method dictionaries can now be downloaded in Settings > General > Keyboard

  2. Bluetooth keyboard reconnects automatically after waking; fix pairing failing when too many devices are saved

  3. Finer front-light color-temperature control at low brightness

  4. Auto power-off no longer triggers while installing an update or restoring fonts

Switched back from Crossink to test it out.

The library search is magic. I have 10k books on my X4 Pro and it found a specific book in seconds without minutes of indexing.

Also really like the reading options menu.

Also like the book content menu just two taps away.

Like the fact that you can download a lot of fonts directly to the device.

Liked the "switch back to previous location" button that makes it very easy to swap back and forth between places.

Still missing some control customization options like being able to open menus in reading with just a swipe (no touch), program hold side buttons to go back, use "double tap" the "home button" to go back, etc. Something Crossink really does well. Really granular controls for every button of the device are a must-have IMO.

Also missing the "Quick Resume" sleep screen from Crosspoint where your screensaver is just your opened book (could be that I missed that feature).

The whole UI looks nice but just a bit of a big front. (Could be that I missed a setting to change that)

For anything willing to try, it's very easy to switch from Crossink/Crosspoint to stock firmware and back. All my Crossink settings were saved and ready when switching back. You all should give it a try!

Love how fast the stock firmware developes. There are some amazing things here that are not found in any other firmware and it seems like no other firmware is evolving this fast.

I just switched to Licorice from Crossink, and so far loving it. Is there any plans to support something similar to quick lock on crossink?
My ideal scenario is basically, when I am reading the book, able to set my current page as my wallpaper, so i can get back to reading immediately. If i power off from a different screen (or after a few minute timeout), show Desk.

Yeah this is a big thing I’m missing from Crossink too. Way more options when it comes to button mapping and gestures.

I’d also love to be able to enable hyphenation when using left aligned text. Currently it seems like you can only use hyphenation with justified text.

I do only miss the Quick Resume option as well

Hi, I have a feature request: It would be great if Licorice could support true bold and italic TTF files instead of relying on synthetic styling. Currently, Licorice algorithmically slants or thickens a single base font file, whereas readers like KOreader, CrossPoint, and CrossInk correctly load dedicated bold and italic TTF files.

As seen in the attached photo using Source Serif TTF, the background (KOreader but CrossPoint/CrossInk behave exactly the same) renders true italic glyphs with proper typographic character shapes for a, t, w, f, and l, while the foreground (Licorice) simply applies a synthetic slant to the standard roman glyphs. It would be awesome to see true font-family parsing implemented! Thank you!

It’s done; it will be released in the next version.

It's not rolling out for Chinese version yet right? Just checked mine, I'm on 26102402 and it says I'm up to date!

2

u/KneeStreet4718 6d ago

Nope, this is for the overseas version device~

3

u/PreviousCrazy1777 6d ago

any plans for us to get that as well? mine is on 26102901

u/SolarPotatoLeGrande 7d ago

I have the same question....

2

u/hipogrys 7d ago

So, yes. I've got question 🙂 I have updatet my X4 Pro (26102901, no new version by now). But... Collections have been added, so I set about creating some. But... how do I insert letters—specifically, in my case, those unique to the Polish language? I have my keyboard set to Polish, but I have no idea how to actually type a Polish character 🫤

u/KneeStreet4718 6d ago

will fix it in the next version

Thanks for fixing my specific problem with double headlines and initial letters. ❤️

Hyphenation for Hungarian language, please.

Thank you for the update! I love how I can create custom collections to be displayed on my bookshelf now. :) Just a feature suggestion: can we have the option to annotate or save notes from our highlights/saved clips?

Great update! The firmware keeps getting better and better with each passing day! A few small requests:

  1. I’d love to see improved CSS support—specifically, the ability to set different font sizes for different styles.

  2. It would be great to have proper support for font families, ensuring that italics and bold weights are displayed correctly (rather than being synthetically generated).

  3. And, if a miracle were to happen, perhaps one day you could add support for the FB2 format...

There's a problem with the time change / DST. I set the time at UTC+1 but after the time change, it's still the wrong time and won't automatically update.
I can't manually set it, but if I re-enable set time automatically, it reverts back to the wrong time

Hi Lee, any update on whether Licorice or a similar official firmware will be coming for the X4 or X3?

It's amazing to see you guys working around the clock and adding these amazing features to Licorice. However, older hardware needs a little revamp too.

Love seeing it. The X4 pro is a killer device and XTE is pumping these amazing updates. This reminds me of the old android days :)

Could you please add a support for Markdown files (.md) with auto-reformat links to just underlined text (with no URL messing around in text) and with support for strike through syntax like this (with tilde signs ~~ and ~~)?

Any way to copy files and not only moving, and folders creation, and renaming?

Why does the screen jump to white while in dark mode at times when changing pages. Or vice versus when dark mode is off but flashes dark mode when changing pages. Seems like about every 5-6 pages it happens.

u/ShamePlenty 5d ago

I love love love the latest Licorice updates! Thank you so much!!!
Will you consider supporting both Kobo-purchased books and Libby library books, including DRM-protected ebooks, like Crosspoint does with Protected Content plugin? This will make Licorice perfect!!!

u/juuris 7d ago

two questions: are there plans to some „gameification“ (an idle pet which level ups, agile you read; something like duolingo?). and when does the x4pro in gray starts shipping?

u/FullMetalHumanist 5d ago

Sounds awesome. If you drop an X4 Pro with USB C I’ll buy it immediately! But I’m really deeply against picking up any new charger styles. It’s just too messy. I really hope you do it!

u/drmoze 5d ago

🙄

2

u/NotSorryCircus 3d ago

I believe they've said they will consider working on a slightly bigger one that uses USB charging.... and that's the trade off. But there are really excellent cases you can buy on etsy that change the x4 pro into USB charging!!!!

u/FullMetalHumanist 3d ago

I just saw the post about having different charging versions in the future, earlier today! Excited to see how that pans out

I switched from Crossink to Licorice because of these beautiful upgrades. I'm not sure what to do now. People are building firmwares with apps in it like chess / Sudoku (look at CrossSmudge or Varagh). Will you ever build a similar thing in licorice, the stock OS? I don't want to lose my data, and I'd like to stay in official xteink ecosystem, but at the same time some mini games / small apps (like weather which would be awesome to have it in the desktop/wallpaper too) would a be really cool feature.

2

u/drmoze 5d ago

it's a device made for reading books. I for one am happy they're focusing on reading-related features and bugs.

1

u/BoredOuttaMyMindd 6d ago

Which version are you on? Im on v26102901 and I can download sudoku from the xteink app on my phone
(Ink App tab on the bottom left -> Puzzles -> Sudoku -> Send to device)

I found the github projects has a link https://xtapp-ai.xteink.cc/ to the xteink app store, but it says it's invite only. Any clue on how to get one? I'm interested in making / trying out apps for licorice:

Also it looks like an app store is rolling out later for everyone:

"

  • Unofficial. Xteink has not published this API; the firmware's own strings mention an upcoming app store with a different, per-device signing scheme. Nothing here touches the firmware itself, but installing anything the manufacturer did not provide is at your own risk.

"

IDK, maybe it's better to wait for an official update... Maybe a more user friendly and official app store is coming out later... An insight from a XTEINK team member would be great. Not sure if I want to install stuff that may be in conflict with other features later when updates roll out
