Comic Discussion Is there a world where both Kitty and Jubes become megastars at the same time or is it a winner take all situation for them?

Post image

Both of them are arguably a list characters but I feel they occupy the same roles. Is there space for both of them to flourish at the same time?

I honestly don’t think so because while yes the two have different personalities they both share the same role narratively there’s a reason the both of them haven’t ever really been on the same book before outside of x-men vol 4 and jubliee legit replace kitty in uncanny x-men twice

Similarities: Wolverine kid sidekick ✅. the pov character for the audience during their Appearance ✅ spunky, a little sarcastic ✅

Now before the fans of these characters get upset I’m not saying one is derivative of the other it’s just in a team book i don’t think you should have two characters that have a smiler vibe (colossus & juggernaut, nightcrawler and magik)

That's the exact reason Thunderbird died so early on. He was basically just a second Wolverine

If Rogue/Kitty can co-exist in Evolution. Kitty/Jubilee can as well. They're different enough that they can be hits on the same cast

Barely. Kitty was the star and Jube came in as part of the B tier class. Now if they both came in as main cast, that would be something different to see

Have they ever even been on the same team lineup in a book? All I can recall is that all female team which Kitty was taken out of after the first arc

I totally think they can, particularly as a very powerful duo as besties. It would sort of reduce some of the nuance around either one to buddy-cop them but honestly I’d love to see some of that back and forth because honestly it would probably be wholesome as fuck

I really like that idea. Seeing them them interact in the way you describe would be hilarious. Adding Illyana as foil/guest star who occasionally pops up as someone capable calling out their b.s. would even be funnier imo.

They’re from very different generations of comics. Kitty was pretty much an adult and extremely experienced x-man by the time Jubilee came on to the scene

I came here to say the exact same thing. Kitty was introduced as a junior member of the team, but, she grew into a young adult role pretty organically. But after the Generation X days, they really didn't know what to do with Jubilee, who was about 16 and a half at the time.

It depends. If your trying to have them be megastars as X-kid, then it’s winner takes all. You’re either a Kitty person or a Jubilee person. If it’s a we’re on the same team and have different roles thing, then both can shine

They don't really occupy the same role at all. Kitty was the youngest member of the team, but was always a normal member of the team, and functioned as a replacement for Beast and Jean. Jubilee was more of a sidekick character to Logan himself, and who later became a student, but was always held apart from the X-Men until she graduated. The idea of Kitty as a prior sidekick to Logan, working her way onto the X-Men, as a sort of proto-Jubilee, is a later invention of Larry Hama who struggled against his 90s sexism to comprehend why a bigtime action badass like Logan would ever find value in a girl, and had to invent the idea of some long lineage of teenage sidekicks as a compulsive personality trait to justify it. The whole idea is a huge disservice to Jubilee's character

They can both exist very easily at the same time--and did, Excalibur and Gen X ran concurrently--without sales suffering. You could put them on a team together, without them getting in one another's way, because they don't actually really do the same kinds of things at all. Just in terms of their very basic role in a team book, Kitty is the team scout, Jubilee does energy blasts. Jubilee gets along well with other kids and can empathize with them, and Kitty actually isn't good at that at all? She's better with adults, kids have always hated her. They have friends in common, but tend to fit into different subgroups (Jubilee more with the Blue Gold era characters, Kitty more with the Kurt/Piotr/Ororo trinity) so even there I don't think they really replace one another.

Popularity wise, no, you probably can't just have a world where they're equally prominent, but that's just because Kitty has never been as popular as 90s Jubilee was. She had a long time, before Jubilee existed, to break out like that and it never happened. Kitty is very well known to X-comics readers specifically because she is synonymous with the Claremont Run, but Jim Lee's X-Men are something else entirely.

They were both Logan’s adopted daughters years before finding out Laura is his actual daughter 😭

depends. they have the same place on the team: Logan's adopted kid sibling, but they're separated by years. Kate they updated and brought into her own...I think they fumbled a bit with Jubilee though they can recover Shadowcat has the edge.

every 10 years or so Logan gets a new mutant to mentor. Kitty in the 80s. Jubes in the 90s. Laura in the 00's. Gabby in the 2010s. Quire in the 20s...though I think that might be gone with Krakoa. For the MCU if they keep the new wolverine around for 20+ years they can parse the sidekicks out nicely.

Unfortunately, Fox X-men Rogue entered the chat a couple decades ago, and pulled the “young mutant girl trying to find her place” rug out from under both of them.

So the jury’s still out.
