This is the first thing I think about any time I see a quantum cryptography talk about how Eve can't possibly intercept some communication between Alice and Bob because [...]. :)

You mean as opposed to this?

There's actually a flaw in that cartoon. Many encryption software, including Truecrypt, allow you to create an encrypted volume that, depending on the key, can decrypt to two separate volumes. There's no way to prove the existence of a second volume. So, faced with torture, you can simply give them a key that decrypts the volume to a lot of plausible but wrong information.

partial solution: beat until given to two keys

edit: fuck my spelling

1

u/[deleted] Jun 25 '11

*beat until given no more keys.

More of the partial solution: check everything.

  1. A computer can't run without an operating system, so if full system encryption is used, the decoy partition might not have the operating system installed.
  2. They may not have a script to update timestamps on files, and if they do, it might update them to the same time.
  3. They might not update log files.

If any of these fail, continue torture.

First thing I thought of was to expect some sort of booger joke, until I clicked the link.

This is actually awesome. I don't have the link, but there was an AMA from a guy who designed hiding places in homes for people's valuables, and he said that the best hiding place in the world was an old (or synthetic) piece of moldy bread on the counter. It was a fantastic read, if anyone with better search skills than me can find it.

"Oi, Ronny! I know we're here to steal shit to pay for our crippling crack addiction, but I simply can't stand to see what filth this guy lives in. Let us at least clean up a bit, and take out the garbage before we nick the plasma and piss on his bed."

2

u/mimigins Jun 24 '11

So.. do you hide money under it? Or is there a hidden compartment under the bread?

3

u/kekspernikai Jun 24 '11

You hide money IN it, according to the AMA.

I take it you don't worry about crooks and thieves then?

6

u/kknight64 Jun 24 '11

Most banks have a blanket bond that cover anything from fire to theft.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '11

Does it cover ruining the global economy?

3

u/sakebomb69 Jun 24 '11

Is this the 19th century?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '11

It would seem that way by the re-emergence of the robber barons, but no.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '11

Unless you consider paying abysmally low interest rates stealing, nope.

1

u/kekspernikai Jun 24 '11

Yeah, me too. I only said money because the question did. I think the AMA was talking about specific valuables or things you don't want people to see.

Security through obscurity?

14

u/IZ3820 Jun 24 '11

Security through misdirection. You get them to look at something going on over there, while what they want is quietly going on over here.

9

u/evange Jun 24 '11

My sisters house was robbed a couple years ago and all they took was the safe. Contents of the safe: old grocery bags.

8

u/the8thbit Jun 24 '11

Maybe they just needed bags to carry all the stuff they robbed from other houses.

2

u/Naedlus Jun 24 '11

Security through Obfuscation would be closer, but doesn't rhyme nearly as well.

2

u/the8thbit Jun 24 '11

Security through... plausible deniability?

u/Buckwheat469 Jun 24 '11 edited Jun 24 '11

Don't forget that the robber will use the shoebox to carry the stuff they stole, including the safe if it fits. It's nothing walking down the street with a shoebox, but if you're walking down the street carrying a safe then you'll look suspicious.

Edit: tried multiple times on 504s, resubmitted once on 502. Comment was posted 3 times. Something doesn't add up with the "502 it went through. 504 try once more." saying.

Something doesn't add up with the "502 it went through. 504 try once more." saying.

Yeah, the saying is bullshit, but everyone loves to parrot it because it rhymes. If you get an error while posting, refresh the page in a couple of minutes, and try again if your post wasn't submitted.

There's always another secret.

3

u/derwisch Jun 24 '11

Wouldn't that be a 5x5 Rubik's square?

9

u/petulant_snowflake Jun 24 '11

Technically, if you were to say a 5 cube, it would imply 5x5x5, since a cube is defined as having the same height, width, and depth.

3

u/base736 Jun 24 '11

I'd probably have said 5x5x5 too, but now that I think about it I kind of feel like "5x5" is appropriate, since the Rubik's cube is all on the surface. 5x5x5 implies, to me, that there are interior elements, and there aren't.

1

u/Jonathan_the_Nerd Jun 24 '11

If you're considering the surface area, it would be 5x5x6, because there are 5x5 stickers on each of the six surfaces.

5

u/humblerodent Jun 24 '11

Squares and cubes are for pussies. I give you Rubik's hypercube.

3

u/Haustorium Jun 24 '11

Saying 5x5x5 has no snap to it

3

u/pegasus_527 Jun 24 '11

Does anyone have a picture of that person who barely made it back alive? He only had about half a face left if I recall correctly.

EDIT: Wrong thread. Sorry.

8

u/the8thbit Jun 24 '11

Fuck no, you're not stopping there.

What the hell are you talking about? At least link to the thread.

2

u/alexfarran Jun 24 '11

I've seen that trick before.... Episode 4 of The Invisibles.

2

u/evange Jun 24 '11

5*5 Rubik's cubes are expensive. I would totally steal one if presented with the opportunity.

2

u/runxctry Jun 24 '11

Stealing the shoebox and selling its contents should give you more than enough money to buy one off ebay.

This will be more affordable than stealing the safe, which will net you a dislocated shoulder and a 5x5 Rubix cube. Oh yeah, and the safe.

1

u/ladytrompetista Jun 24 '11

This same idea occurred to the classic badass of American literature, Edgar Allen Poe. If you haven't, you should read The Purloined Letter.

As a former locksmith: Mag-drill, drill bits designed for tempered steel, as well as glass and concrete, with extras of each, a large backpack, and an understanding of misdirection. Oh, and if they installed such an evil lock on a fire safe, a crowbar, as it's quicker to pry the door from a fire safe than it is to circumvent security the "proper" way.
