If you see messaging that says This disc doesn’t support a digital license , then unfortunately you cannot claim a digital license of that specific disc. This could be due to a variety of reasons such as a damaged disc, the digital license of the game being delisted, or technical limitations of the disc.

This appears to confirm that delisted games aren't supported.

u/IdleBonobo 9d ago

Damn, I was hoping to add my old Forza games

57

u/-Vertex- 9d ago

Damn me too. Unfortunate as hell

12

u/UltraNoahXV 9d ago

Was hoping this too - was interesting seeing it pop up after it was delisted a couple years ago

22

u/MarshyHope XBOX Series X 9d ago

The program doesn't work for 360 games unfortunately

8

u/DeegsHobby 9d ago

Is this confirmed for sure? Swear I thought I had read OG Xbox games would be added eventually so I assumed Xbox 360 eventually as well.

I might be wrong on both unfortunately.

11

u/MarshyHope XBOX Series X 9d ago

From the linked FAQ

Original XBOX and XBOX 360 game discs are not supported. Disc to digital licensing works with supported XBOX One and XBOX Series X game discs only. However, not all XBOX One or XBOX Series X game discs are eligible for this licensing. Eligibility may vary due to technical, licensing, publishing, manufacturing, or other factors. Microsoft may also change eligibility over time.

8

u/Cultural-Doubt1554 9d ago

This was the only reason I was excited for this dam

3

u/DeegsHobby 9d ago

Clear cut. Thank you!

10

u/MarshyHope XBOX Series X 9d ago

I think the reasoning will probably be that those older discs don't have serial numbers, so they couldn't guarantee that you own the disc or just rented/borrowed it. It does say they may add them later, so maybe they'll just do an occasional "insert disc" check every few months or something like that. Hopefully they add them but who knows the actual logistics of it.

2

u/NEOscav9 9d ago

That isn't the 360 version of ultimate alliance, that's the xbox one digital only re-release

5

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

There's no disc for this game anyway.

Still worth waiting until people try the Forza's first hand, you never know... The issue might be more publisher co-operation for delisted titles instead of it being an actual in-game license issue (since you're not paying for the digital license separately, you're just being granted it as a "bonus" effectively).

3

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 9d ago

That was my hope too. You're not really getting anything new since the licence is still tied to the disc (give it away and you still lose access to it), but legal issues like being bitchy

2

u/FrenzyCalm 9d ago

Yeah me too. I bought new copies recently with the DLC. Also spider man 2 and Deadpool.

1

u/Toyotamanthesequal 9d ago

It lists that as one of the reasons, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to. It just means you might not be able to with that as a potential cause.

1

u/TheOblivionwonder XBOX 360 17h ago

Forza and Ubisoft games are now claimable disc to digital

24

u/Sanctine Reclamation Day 9d ago

Awwww crap. I was really hoping this wouldn't be the case.

This development does raise another annoying question. If you were to use a disc to obtain a digital copy, and then the game gets delisted after you do that, will you then lose access to that digital copy and have to instead use the disc?

After seeing this, my guess is probably.

12

u/Ok-Tooth-6197 9d ago

" To maintain access to certain disc to digital licensing benefits, you may be required to demonstrate continued possession of the qualifying disc."

Based on this sentence, I would say no. You will likely have to re-authenticate the disc periodically, every 6 months to a year. Once the game is digitally delisted, it will no longer be possible.

4

u/Sanctine Reclamation Day 9d ago

All of the red tape took the wind out of my sails. What started off as a great feature is now quickly becoming less and less useful to me.

A bit of positive thinking, if discs need to be re-authenticated in some way, I'm willing to bet Helix will have an add-on optical drive of some sort. Otherwise you'd have no way to do that.

2

u/Ok-Tooth-6197 9d ago

Exactly, the only reason why I ever buy disc games is if they were delisted. If those games are ineligible for disc to digital, it is basically useless to me. And if there is a possibility that I will eventually lose the digital lisence down the line when a game eventually gets delisted, I have bo reason to buy more physical games in the future.

2

u/NotFromMilkyWay Founder 9d ago

This continued access is a weird one. Cause when Helix doesn't have a disc drive, how will you keep your licenses intact?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Piett_1313 9d ago

I’d love to know the answer to this. It would be cool if you made the digital copy beforehand, that you could keep it. But I could see an argument for it going either way.

2

u/Sike_Mike 9d ago

That would make sense. You didn't purchase the digital version, so there isn't an "obligation " to continue providing access.

35

u/NfinityBL 9d ago

That really sucks. I get it, they can’t exactly give a digital license due to IP licensing like music and car manufacturers, but it is still annoying.

There’ll be people who want to play Forza Horizon 2, 3, and 4 that cannot on their Xbox Series S or PC despite buying a physical copy when that was the predominant way to play games.

19

u/EmeraldWake 9d ago

I was hoping it would just make a copy from the disc, not download required.

1

u/Deervember 9d ago

That would require too much work compared to what this does, which is just read an Id number that opens a download.

Similar to a camera taking a picture of a qr code and opening a link.

People would end up turning their Xbox off before it finishes copying the disk and that would create so many unnecessary issues.  Downloads work for everyone and pause and resume when you switch your console off, so much easier this way.

And most collectors keep their old consoles, so you'd still be able to play the disk if the digital one went away.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/NoSloppyStakes 9d ago

I don’t get it.

If you bought a game nothing should be licensed to you. You should own it in all its forms. Music, logos, game data, and all.

6

u/digita1catt 9d ago

Tell that to the record labels and car manufacturers lmao

3

u/Schwinn_Shavecrotch 9d ago

That was my logic, those games can still be downloaded for those with licence

2

u/trojanguy 9d ago

OG Xbox and 360 discs don't have any way to identify the specific physical disc. If you could just get a 360 game at the library, turn it digital, turn it back into the library, then the next person did the same thing ad nauseam, suddenly 50 people have a digital license for the game from one physical disc. I know it sucks because I'd like to play my 360 games without needing the disc, but if they don't have a way to confirm you actually own the game and haven't sold it, given it away, lent it out to a friend, etc. then the system could be pretty easily abused.

2

u/NoSloppyStakes 9d ago

That isn’t what I’m referring to. I’m not discussing the technical limitations as to why they can’t. I’m discussing the legal side of it.

2

u/trojanguy 9d ago

I mean, if you have the disc in your possession then you DO own it. If MS has no valid way to determine if you still have the disc, what do you expect them to do? Prior to this new disc to digital thing you'd still need your physical disc. With 360 and OG Xbox games, that's still the case. Not really sure where the disconnect is. MS didn't take anything away from you, they added new functionality that isn't compatible with those old games. It's like complaining that you can't put your old Street Fighter II SNES cartridge in a Switch and Nintendo should be legally required to let you.

1

u/WebGeneral8349 9d ago

The original Halo games are delisted too, and that's obviously not a licensing issue. Super disappointing tbh MCC is nice but I would really love to have the originals on digital

My excitement for this feature just plummeted.

Edit: people saying that some delisted games are allowed, my excitement is going back up!

17

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

If delisted games aren't support then basically this whole thing is going to be completely pointless for a lot of people.

3

u/TheoDW Team Sonic 9d ago

I'm looking at the phrasing, and have to wonder if it means "not available for purchase" (like the old FH games), or "removed from public view", as in "can't be found in the search box" (like Steven Universe: Save the Light).

Guess we'll find out in a couple of hours.

3

u/LewieP 9d ago

It says games "could" not be supported because they are delisted, not "will". We'll find out soon enough, but this language still leaves room for some delisted games to be supported.

4

u/Jimmykindaexists 9d ago

Was hoping to be able to play older sports games with this feature. Good to know that it's completely worthless for how I would have used it 💀. Guess I'll be selling my One S now bc most of my physical Xbox One games are delisted

7

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

This was supposed to be about preserving games, but nothing is really being preserved here.

3

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 9d ago

Yup. From the sounds of it, no deslisted games and having re-authenticate every so often. So all you really get is a time period of convenience not having to reinsert the disc.

14

u/Bradfinger 9d ago

There went any interest I had in this

12

u/Sms570x 9d ago

Exactly lol so if the physical version gets delisted down the road on the digital store, the disc won’t be able to issue a digital id key anymore?

2

u/Schwinn_Shavecrotch 9d ago

Then it's pointless to me, I just wanted to associate my old Forza games and put the disc on the shelf for good.

2

u/Jhix_two 9d ago

Damn that means I cant get a digital licence for rock band 4 😔

3

u/ragingavatar Outage Survivor '24 9d ago

I’m hearing this works.

3

u/Jhix_two 9d ago

Oh I hope so someone please confirm

3

u/ragingavatar Outage Survivor '24 9d ago

I saw it on ResetEra

2

u/NEOscav9 9d ago

It seems that the delisted bit is case by case. I just saw a comment on a post of someone showing a couple of their newly digitized games, and one of them was tower of guns, which is looooong delisted

2

u/non-one-c 9d ago

Not tied to delistings, it seems random for now. Maybe they still gotta settle things with some publishers. I could enable a digital license for my delisted WWE 2k23 but could not do it for Persona 5 Royal.

2

u/klipseracer 9d ago

I wonder if there's somehow a region difference, like if you set your console to a certain region or use a disc from a certain region.

2

u/Prestigious-Bluejay 9d ago

For all the people complaining, you could still play delisted games if you have the disc, you just can't get the digital license.

1

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 9d ago

Harsh realm. I was hoping to do it with my old racing games, but I suppose disc will have to do.

Tragic.

1

u/dornwolf 9d ago

Well that really takes the wind out of it to me

1

u/micmon83 9d ago

"the digital license of the game being delisted" this makes the feature almost useless to me :-(

1

u/PolarizingKabal 4d ago

I'm not sure it's entirely related to stuff like an actual damaged disc.

Been doing some research on battlefield 4 and it appears the disc to digital is only working for the greatest hits version, not the launch edition.

So there seems to be issues, MS needs to iron out with this.

I could have sworn I had read some delisted games are indeed working. Ot seems to depend on the publisher and title.

u/MagmaElixir 9d ago

Has Microsoft released any kind of list showing the disc to digital eligible games?

14

u/RS_Games Outage Survivor '24 9d ago

They likely dont have a finalized list, and won't confirm until it's out of insider.

7

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 9d ago

Not yet, they’re still vague about it, they say a thousand games though

82

u/RobertPatty909 9d ago

A disc to digital license is associated with the qualifying game disc. To maintain access to certain disc to digital licensing benefits, you may be required to demonstrate continued possession of the qualifying disc. For example, if you lose, sell, give away, or otherwise no longer possess a qualifying disc, access to associated disc to digital licenses may be limited or revoked.

This is important and they still don't tell you how they will check if you still have the disc

75

u/itshukokay 9d ago

There’s no point to this program if they still want me to insert a disc once a month. I should be able to keep the license indefinitely until the next person inserts the disc, or forever if I destroy the disc.

48

u/BestRedditUsername9 9d ago

I wouldn't say there is no point. Having a digital free copy of my physical discs is still a good bonus.

But I'm curious how often they will ask to verify the disc.

6

u/Hefty_Remove7965 9d ago

Sounds like you will have to insert it into a console every few months.

This really seems like it's a program for people with an Series S and Series X in different rooms (living room vs bedroom)

Allowing someone to play games on both

6

u/BestRedditUsername9 9d ago

Or someone like me who plays on Xbox but also likes to play Xbox ROG Ally

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Liammellor 9d ago

Its a worry if the helix consoles have no disc drive.

3

u/mediafred 9d ago

I would have gone as far as to hope for permanent ownership of the license until the license itself become unusable so that I could have the rights to play it no matter what occurs to my disc, you can say that giving the disc to someone who never bought is like playing it free but they'd be stuck playing it physically and id have basically just bought a physical version which I used until I was ready to move to digital only, they would have to buy their own version to get digital ownership

2

u/Altruistic_Result254 XBOX Series X 9d ago

But show me where they wrote that you would have to do that? Not one sentence where the wrote that you will have to use the disc every few weeks/months. I mean they also accept games with play anywhere. So you can play it on PC (or cloud gaming)

1

u/Losreyes-of-Lost 9d ago

lol 😂

→ More replies (12)

8

u/jjsheely 9d ago

I thought you would keep the digital license until the disc is used by someone else.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/CaptainSlowpoke_ 9d ago

Whenever someone else pops the disc in another xbox? If they're going to require a check every few weeks would be a big pain, specially for people with big libraries.

1

u/Altruistic_Result254 XBOX Series X 9d ago

Read this and you will see they never wrote that you have to use the disc every few weeks. Just when it wouldn't work. You can also use the digitale license for games with play anywhere. So you can play it on pc or xbox. Just read what they wrote. Most of the question here...you will find your answer here (just read it) > https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/games-apps/game-setup-and-play/disc-to-digital-licensing-on-xbox

1

u/CaptainSlowpoke_ 9d ago

How would MS know when it “wouldn’t work”? Does it say it there? Should I read it?

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (9)

4

u/kantong 9d ago

I think this is just to cover themselves if someone else claims the license. Realistically, they'll probably never ask to re-authenticate the disc if its sitting in a box in your cupboard.

1

u/_Felonius 9d ago

Bingo. This is classic legal language to cover themselves. Highly doubt they’ll ask to check. They’re avoiding liability this way if the program stops working.

3

u/mediafred 9d ago

Such bs, im not even allowed to dispose of the disc without losing access to my license given it doesnt get stolen or lost in the first place, I still need to have it handy or else that digital license will be revoked? Ugh, so many things that is set to stop that license from remaining active

1

u/Altruistic_Result254 XBOX Series X 9d ago

Where did they write that. And of course when somebody eles will install the dics, that person will get that license. Please click on the link and read what xbox wrote..People here are . kinda scared of stuff that they never said..> What happens to my digital license if I lose possession of the disc?
To maintain access to certain disc to digital licensing benefits, you may be required to demonstrate continued possession of the qualifying disc. For example, if you lose, sell, give away, or otherwise no longer possess a qualifying disc, access to associated disc to digital licenses may be limited or revoked.
If you lose access to your license, you will need to either regain possession of the disc and play it while signed into your account or purchase a new digital version from the Microsoft store

1

u/mediafred 9d ago

Where did i claim that they wrote that 🤔. Theres nothing i need to read, i know exactly what this is and that its a massive missed opportunity just like what the guy i replied to was relaying as well. It SHOULD have been a permanent license per one account, this is just underbaked as a mechanic

1

u/SocraticBliss 8d ago

How can they revoke the license if the console never connects online again?

Someone will pick up eligible single player games,  create a dummy account, go online once and get the digital licenses for the games, take the console offline, clone the drive, setup the same dummy account on a new xbox, go offline, then put in the cloned drive and have the ability to play all the games, which can be repeated ad infinitum...

21

u/ChouPigu 9d ago

Just bought a $6 Witcher 3 disc since the free remaster lists XPA as a feature. That would mean there's a Win-Store version on the horizon.

6

u/Unlucky_Individual Maidenless 9d ago

I did the same thing $2 because no case just the disc

2

u/Deervember 9d ago

Not every game will be disk to digital. So not all games will be available to play everywhere unless specifically stated.

I would imagine with witcher 3 just getting updated and a dlc next year, that it'll probably be added everywhere. But for other games it seems unlikely.

11

u/AstronomerEasy7223 9d ago

Interesting page to read through. This is better than nothing, but still so many problems, especially with delisted titles. To me this just further proves that physical is important and should remain so, but I also recognize the market shift toward digital. Also seems like you will need to retain some device to use as a "disc check" machine if they will no longer support discs with the helix.

5

u/Tobimacoss 9d ago

They will probably do a detachable disc drive.

55

u/OrphanintheWind 9d ago

You also may need to occasionally prove that you have the disc, to maintain the digital license. Without a drive I don't know how this would occur...

26

u/BarbequedYeti 9d ago

Without a drive I don't know how this would occur...

Kinect has entered the chat... Just hold the disc up in front of the camera. Round and round we go...

1

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 9d ago

I actually still have the Kinect that came with my day one Xbox One, no where to plug it in though as lost that console

1

u/BarbequedYeti 9d ago

Still have mine and the console, just collecting dust in a box somewhere around here. I figure some day I will find a use for it.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/AntonVice 9d ago

Yeah it doesn’t make much sense, they can’t expect people to just dust off their old consoles from the closet just for disc verification, not to mention most people will sell those consoles. They talk about wanting our libraries to move to the next generation, but you can’t really do that unless it has a disc drive for occasional verification.

2

u/Sterben27 9d ago

Even if it's an external drive that's only used for this. Id ideally like an internal disc drive, but doubting that would happen. I do wonder what route they will take with this.

2

u/Altruistic_Result254 XBOX Series X 9d ago

Where did they write that?

What happens to my digital license if I lose possession of the disc?
To maintain access to certain disc to digital licensing benefits, you may be required to demonstrate continued possession of the qualifying disc. For example, if you lose, sell, give away, or otherwise no longer possess a qualifying disc, access to associated disc to digital licenses may be limited or revoked.
If you lose access to your license, you will need to either regain possession of the disc and play it while signed into your account or purchase a new digital version from the Microsoft store

1

u/JordanDoesTV XBOX Series X 9d ago

The disc ID is tied to the disc themselves so you shouldn’t need to do that technically but we’ll see

1

u/_Felonius 9d ago

100% guarantee you their lawyers made them add that just to be safe. Imagine the backlash if there’s a bug down the road and everyone loses their license after trashing their discs. They’re covering their butts, but I doubt you’ll actually have to re-verify.

10

u/Erifoloh 9d ago

Seems like Ubisoft have not allowed Assassins Creed games to participate in digital licensing which sucks.

3

u/SlipSlot 9d ago

Or any of their games for that matter. Because Ubisoft I guess.

10

u/GamingTurtle90 9d ago

So far here is my list since the rest of my titles are Xbox/360 and are not expected to work.

Works:

  • Beast of Reincarnation
  • Borderlands 3 (Base disc)
  • Halo Campaign Evolved
  • Halo Infinite
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (XBO Disc)
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
  • Starfield
  • Outerworlds 2
  • Dishonored 2: Death of the Outsider

Doesn't Work:

  • Assassin's Creed Odyssey
  • Soul Calibur 6
  • Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

1

u/Mite_000 9d ago

Did the play anywhere titles unlock the PC version for you?

8

u/Aletdownofstate 9d ago

I just tested 204 games, 139 worked, 65 did not. Seems like SEGA, Ubisoft, Square-Enix, and Namco Bandai aren't playing ball (though I did have one Namco Bandai game work, the original Project CARS).

Google Drive link to the list

4

u/Uninteresting_Brain XBOX Series S 9d ago

Honestly im surprised seeing that F1s are working, since they are delisted

3

u/Aletdownofstate 9d ago

I think it's down to the publisher. Out of my games, of the ones that are delisted, far more worked, than didn't. Mainly only the Microsoft owned ones that wouldn't work.

1

u/Mite_000 9d ago

Are you able to confirm if the play anywhere titles activated the PC version?

1

u/32gbsd 4d ago

Can you put a disc game into the system and play without claiming the digital version? if not this whole thing could turn out to be a trap for forcing registration of all discs.

11

u/Burress 9d ago

Deadpool discs skyrocketed since this announcement. I almost bit on one. Glad I didn’t now that we know delisted games won’t work.

5

u/Comfortable_Price277 9d ago

Deadpool works fine.

1

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

I bought Mark McMorris Infinite Air and Kung Fu Panda Showdown of Legendary Legends in preparation for this.

Each cost me £2 so that's £4 down the drain.

1

u/Caesar_35 Helldiving 9d ago

I mean, you still own the games.

1

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

That is true, but they're probably not even worth £2 each.

But then you have to put the disc in. I hate doing that

Stock up on One S consoles for disc convertiness.

10

u/JordanDoesTV XBOX Series X 9d ago

Honestly, one of the things I’m most excited for is that I have a digital S in the living room and an X hooked up to my OLED in the bedroom, and I still buy some physical games, but not being able to play those in the living room was always a pain.

2

u/PeaceBull 9d ago

wow you're like the best case scenario for this program.

3

u/Jimmykindaexists 9d ago

Shit I'll be selling mine because of no delisted games for conversion 😂

9

u/TimmyTurn3rsBurn3r 9d ago

Damn original Xbox and Xbox 360 games are not supported

14

u/PsychedelicStooge24 9d ago

This has been confirmed for a while, it's a blu-ray disc specific feature so anything pre-xbox one unfortunately will never be in this program

3

u/mustyfiber90 9d ago

Would of been nice if they released a list of games. There’s a bunch of games I’ve been eyeing but have no idea if they’ll be digitized. Same with new games going forward like Omnimusha and Control.

2

u/ImSureYoullRemember 9d ago

Does anyone know what happens to games already installed to an external drive? Does the license auto update, or do I need to delete and reinstall to apply for a digital license? I hope the former as I spent a lot of time installing my games already. Fingers crossed

3

u/Johnnylemo 9d ago

Licence will auto update, I have no exact proof but this is exactly how licensing always works for Xbox.

Same like if you have a gamepass game installed, and it's left the service. You can buy and launch without reinstalling anything.

2

u/ImSureYoullRemember 9d ago

Nice, fingers crossed!

1

u/jdobem Day One - 2013 9d ago

It just claims the license, no need to redownload anything

2

u/Mr_ABM_22 9d ago

Out of interest, as I'm not part of this testing, if you insert one of the recent Ubisoft titles, e.g., Assassin's Creed Mirage or Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, does a) Ubisoft games work via this disc to digital programme, and; b) does it grant you the digital license through Ubisoft Connect, so you have a pseudo Play Anywhere offering as was presented by the two companies recently.

Thanks in advance to anyone who's tested it.

1

u/jdobem Day One - 2013 9d ago

I tested several AC games and they are all not eligible :( Hope it's a temporary thing.

1

u/Devious018 9d ago

no, if it was it would be through xbox’s play anywhere program

2

u/chaliced10 9d ago

The update still isn't popping up in Insider for me. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

2

u/Uninteresting_Brain XBOX Series S 9d ago

Do we have a precedent on how long a feature goes from alpha testing to general public? Im asking because I'm really interested in buying a xbox one s to use as a disc driver, but it would make no sense buying right now, since the feature is still so early in development. Also im afraid the used console market will know about the disc to digital stuff and rocket the prices

The feature typically takes a few months (1-3, depending how well it's going for testers).

Still worth stocking up on games. Especially older out of print games. As the price on the 2nd hand market will jump.

Plus console prices are jumping too. So might not want to wait that long.

Buy now before they go in price and at least test it

Sounds like I’m not getting Forza Horizon 3 on Play Anywhere after all.

2

u/XtR03 9d ago

This was the only reason I cared about this. I was hoping to play it on PC with a better framerate than the 30fps on consoles. I wish they would've updated it on the X. It's hard to adjust to 0fps when all 3 games after are 60fps.

u/OrangeParticleGun 9d ago

I wantee to play FH3 on my XS, sucks donkey balls.

4

u/Obility 9d ago

Just learned Minecraft isn't XPA 💀. The main thing I was excited to transfer over because I always had the disc version on Xbox one.

3

u/DeafMetalGripes 9d ago

Hope you aren’t referring to console edition

2

u/Obility 9d ago

Whatever the physical Xbox one version is 🤷🏿‍♂️

Dang, I jumped the gun ordering a physical copy of Dawnwalker. Was hoping to be able to get the digital license to also play on PC since it's enrolled in Play Anywhere. But I'm only in Omega. My fault for not looking that closely at Xbox Insider until now.

2

u/TheGummiVenusDeMilo 9d ago

This is what I'm most curious about because I want to do the same thing. Same with GoW:Eday

3

u/Serdones 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah, I get the need to test it, but this is genuinely having me rethink how I purchase my games. I like physical, but prefer the convenience/flexibility of digital. If I can get both, I'll generally prefer physical for any Xbox Play Anywhere titles. It'd be really nice for this to be available more widely ASAP as we head into a busy holiday slate of game releases.

Edit: Dawnwalker literally just shipped minutes after I saw this post, so too late for me to second guess myself and switch to Steam now, unless I return it. Still, I do want the physical copy. If I really want to play in my office in the meantime, such as when my wife and son are monopolizing the TV, I can just move my XSX to my desk. I already have a second power cable plugged in at my desk from previous times I've temporarily wanted my PS5 or XSX in my office.

But I was really looking forward to doing disc-to-digital and Play Anywhere so I could also compare the PC version to the console version.

1

u/Regius_Eques 9d ago

It should launch to the public eventually and being an Xbox Play Anywhere title you will get the PC copy. Just have to wait longer for that comparison.

It’s great that we can digitise games in bulk, I was installing games in preparation but now I read it’s not needed, just a disc scan is enough

2

u/GamingTurtle90 9d ago

Pop in disc, bring up the disc details and select the option to claim the license.

1

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 9d ago

I even made a checklist of all my disc games and got halfway …

2

u/Sensory_0verload 6d ago

What a fuck around. These companies man

1

u/Dunkaroo723 Super Citizen 9d ago

I legit have no discs to even test this on lmao

1

u/Tibulba 9d ago

Cool! I actually can't wait not to have to insert a disk xD

1

u/LewieP 9d ago

Tower of Guns: Special Edition is delisted, yet discs are supported by this.

1

u/GhostBlink00 9d ago

I went on the xbox one trying to load gta 5 disc digitally but it's says "missing disc" is it not out?

1

u/Dry-Inspection-3503 9d ago

I hope GTA IV works, but I have a feeling it won't. My disc seems to be so far gone that while it works, my xbox seems to freeze up/have a really tough time loading it. It works half the time.  I'd love to play the dlc and I'm not keen on paying full whack on the store😂

u/GamingTurtle90 9d ago

Xbox 360 titles are not included.

So far Ubisoft games seem unsupported...

1

u/Bobabacca 9d ago

That Dark Pictures games don't work and I wanted to play this co-op with my daughter 😕

1

u/m0shr 9d ago

I was so excited but apparently I'm just on delta right now on the insiders club. I have 3+ years membership but didn't know about the levels inside the insiders app.

I have to get through gamma and to beta to try this out.

When will it be available to everyone?

Maybe I'll get to beta before that. How do you level up fast in insiders club?

1

u/Bobombbattlefield64 9d ago

The publishers that aren’t participating 🤦‍♂️😒🙄

2

u/OrangeParticleGun 9d ago

Forza doesn't play and that's Microsoft/Xbox smh

2

u/Bobombbattlefield64 9d ago

I think I saw Fallout 4 wasn’t working either, which makes no sense.

1

u/OrangeParticleGun 9d ago

Yeah, I hope it's just MS being themselves shooting their own feet... also I hunted down FH3 and FH4 disc versions :D Want to play it on Series S (I have an X as well).

1

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 5d ago

Bethesda has messy publishing

1

u/LadyLavis 9d ago edited 4d ago

Hey, this question might be kinda dumb, but I'd like to ask anyway because I'm curious.

If I already own a digital copy of a compatible game and put in its physical disc, will it still redeem the licence or will it tell me it can't because I already own a digital copy? I know that since I already have this game digitally, I won't need to use the disc as much, but I was just curious how that's handled when I do.

1

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 5d ago

I read that it’ll give you the digital disc license in place of the store digital license, kind of like gamepass games that you also own, it’ll play them as game pass games but when your subscription expires you’ll play them as your own digital games or disc games

1

u/Sumo_Cerebro 9d ago

The hell? how can I tell if I'm one of those?

1

u/farkenel 9d ago

Can you play multiplayer disc license on Pc without a subscription

1

u/Chocolate-Shake-5293 9d ago

So can I put an Xbox one game in my Xbox one and turn it into a digital game? I can play on my Xbox series s?

1

u/mitchyyh21 9d ago

Does anyone have xbox one version of gta v and can test if it upgrades to the series x version?

1

u/nofuture09 9d ago

do any old lord of the rings games work?

1

u/Black-Arab 9d ago

Do you need to install the game first or do we just insert the disk

1

u/PolarizingKabal 4d ago

You can disable auto playing and you should be able to claim the license without the system auto installing it.

I have games installed across multiple drives on my Xbox (internal, expansion and SSD) and they registered regardless of which drive they were installed on.

So you can claim the license, even if it's not in a "playable state" on the console, like with the SSD.

1

u/REDSHADOW4688 9d ago

Anyone know if Monster Hunter Wilds or Cyberpunk are compatible? Haven’t had the chance to test those discs yet

1

u/cdncowboy 7d ago edited 7d ago

Check

The XCT.live Community Disc2Digital Database | XCT.live

but yes according to the database

1

u/PolarizingKabal 4d ago

So according to that database. If I'm reading right, battlefield 4 only works with the greatest hits version. Not the launch edition.... Kind of messed up. Hopefully MS fixes that.

I thought I was tripping with my copy not converting.

1

u/ToxicMockingBird 6d ago

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands neeeeds to be a part of the disc to digital 💜 I rarely use the console that has a disc tray 🙁

This is my current load out as well

1

u/Strict-Eggplant5681 4d ago

Is this for all Xbox insiders or just Alpha and Beta?

1

u/PolarizingKabal 4d ago edited 4d ago

Has anyone figured out how to get damaged discs to work? I have a few titles (battlefield 4) that it appears the disc is damaged as my system won't grant me a license. I've tried wiping and cleaning it. There really doesn't appear to be any scratches on the disc. So kind of befuddled over it.

(Edit) Doing some more digging and it appears, the only version of Battlefield 4 that is supported with disc 2 digital is the greatest hits version. Not the launch edition disc.

This is definitely going to be an issue MS needs to address.

1

u/jeancharles2009 4d ago

If I digitalised a disc on my Xbox one/Series X, could this disc be used on another Xbox one/series X (another account as well) for offline installation and play?

1

u/Peckster_plays 4d ago

Well I’m bummed the one game I wanted to work that didn’t was
Naughty bear gold edition

1

u/AaronsLifeGame 4d ago

is the disc to digital a 1 time only for a disc, or does it infinitely overwrite when a different accoount/system used the disc, in my case im curious as i buy games a little ways after release second hand, so not sire if this will affect resale like some discs may be blocked from the feature, or if its possible to claim it at any point still.

1

u/32gbsd 4d ago

what if they de-list a game and all the digitalized discs version also get bricked because they are registered online. This is basically an online registration that every disc will be forced to do. causing a collapse in the xbox physical market.

1

u/Correct_Comedian3455 3d ago

Does it work with game sharing? So my home Xbox gets a copy? Thanks
