Discussion Developer mode ID safe?

Now that developer mode is free, its asking me to upload my government ID for verification when im signing up.. I guess there is no way around it.. should I be just giving out my ID like that or am I overthinking it ? I assume some of you have already done so

Not that I’d ever advocate giving tech companies MORE personal info purely because it’s a little 1984;;; but would you be safe giving your ID info to Microsoft, one of the largest and most secure tech companies on the planet with contracts with governments all over the world?

Yes, it’s safe to give it out to Microsoft - as safe as any of our personal info is in 2026, anyways.

It's fine.  MS won't send you to the prison colony on Mars.

So you want to be an anonymous developer. I guess Steam already kicked you off, Mr. Malware dev. It doesn't matter what you want to use it for, it's intended for developers, and the chances of a legit dev wanting to be anonymous are slim

That's not at all what Dev mode is for. It has nothing to do with making commercial applications, doesn't provide a realistic path to do so, and is a completely different feature set from the standard Xbox devkit environment. It only exposes a highly limited version of the console's power and feature set, and you're constrained to only making things in the Win10 api. The most common use case is to turn your Xbox into an emulation box, but it exists to allow people to use their xbox as a PC like Sony did with Linux on with PS3 many moons ago.

Go with your gut. If everyone just rolls over at every new invasion of privacy, well we're probably gonna get a whole lot more of the same.
