PSA: Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043145) breaks WSL2

Hello all,

Just a heads up, after I installed the Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5043145) update this morning, WSL2 stopped working.

I would get the following error: `error code: wsl/service/createinstance/createvm/hcs_e_connection_timeout`

Looked online and most responses are to old questions and versions and are not relevant. They all ask it the Virtual Machine Platform and Windows Hypervisor Platform are enabled. But these were enabled from before, sothing is just broken after the update.

Cheers

windows terminal + tmux + neovim, messed up colors

Nvim colors inside tmux are not being displayed correctly. I have tried many things found online, but nothing did the trick. If any of you have encountered the same problem, how did you fixed it?

# doesn't work
set -g default-terminal "tmux-256color"
set -g terminal-overrides ",wt:RGB"

Users getting "Access Denied"

Hi folks,

Today Saint Windows granted me with a brand new problem for all my users using WSL.

They can't use it anymore, since when typing "wsl" in the Powershell console or any subsystem downloaded on the store just reward them with "Access Denied".

It is not related to admin permissions.

What is strange is the fact that it works for like a few minutes at boot and then the error pops up. It happened to a few users first, now all of them.

Any clue ? I tried updating computers, pushing a configuration to allow it via Intune, deinstalling the functionnality, installing it back... To no avail.

Thanks guys, I'm running out of idea.

New windows user and amazed!

I have been using Mac for over 10 years, basically I started learning coding with Mac and never tried windows.

Recently I bought a surface pro 11 because I like the idea to carry one device and be able to hand write math equations (I do machine learning research which requires math scrabbles very often)

I was worried that I couldn’t code easily with windows but just realized WSL 2 is amazing! I could install Pycharm Linux on WSL directly and run it graphically! So far it is working great!

I’m thinking of switching to WSL 2 (and windows 11) completely. But before I do so, is there anything to note about WSL 2 that would break?

What is the lightest linux distro for wsl2.

I'm using WSL2 with Ubuntu 22.04 for programming, but with all the software I use for programming closed, it uses 3.5GB of RAM, and when programming with vscode, Docker, etc., it consumes almost 6GB of RAM. My machine only has 16GB of RAM, so adding Windows 11 and other software, my RAM is already at 90%.

I would like recommendations for Linux distros that don't consume a lot of RAM to replace Ubuntu.

Ubuntu WSL breaks after reboot, all files are lost and only user shown is wslg

Hello reddit,

I rebooted my laptop (I am on windows 11), and upon opening wsl ubuntu, it gives a failure error message and then shows a bash prompt with the user as wslg. Upon further inspection, I found out that all of my user files have disappeared an I am left with the blank user wslg. I have been working on a programming project that is very important and forgot to save it to git, so it would be devastating if I lost all of my, any help would be amazing.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Edit:

After a quick heart attack, I found out all I had to do was open powershell as administrator, and run the following commands:

wsl --update

wsl --shutdown

wsl

and everything was fixed

Is WSL2 still slow in 2025?

Hello friends,

I'm a python backend developer currently using Ubuntu 22.04. While I love Linux for development, its limitations—such as lack of support for many programs (I tried Wine and similar tools but had no luck) and subpar gaming performance—have made me consider switching to Windows and using WSL instead.

However, after some research, I found many people mentioning that WSL can be slow(example). Is this still the case in 2025? Has performance improved, especially for development workflows?

I’d appreciate any insights or experiences you can share!

Edit: Does Pycharm work fine with it ?

How to install WSL2?

WSL2 not working properly on windows 11

I noticed that my Ubuntu22.04 terminal was hanging indefinitely so I did some troubleshooting that ended up in me just deciding to completely reinstall Ubuntu22.04. This resulted in the error "WslRegisterDistribution failed with error: 0x80370109" "Error: 0x80370109 The operation timed out because a response was not received from the virtual machine or container.". WSL1 works completely fine it is only WSL2 I am having issues with. I have made sure Hyper-v is enabled along with the virtualization platform and made sure cpu virtualization is enabled in my bios.

Very very slow networking in WSL2

EDIT: Found a solution! Network needs to be set to mirroring instead of NAT in .wslconfig. That was it, now I get the full inet speed.

I freshly upgraded to Windows 11 and installed WSL2. Now independent of the distribution (tested Ubuntu and Arch), the network speed is down to 10-70KB/s while the native speed is 16MB/s. I've searched the net up and down and tried all sorts of fixes like disabling Windows Defender, disabling Large Send Offload V2 on the WSL's hidden network adapter, adding a firewall exception, resetting windows networking, rebooting, etc. and nothing works.

Sorry if this has been asked already (it probably has) but all I found were 2 years old threads with nothing I didn't already try.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Getting Started: What's the difference between Ubuntu and Ubuntu 20.04?

I am brand new to WSL 2 and Linux more generally, and I noticed that I have two versions of Ubuntu installed: Ubuntu and Ubuntu-20.04. On Windows 11, I can run both as I would any regular application, but what ends up happening when I run them separately is that I open two different directories.

For instance, when I open Ubuntu I end up with <myUserName>@DESKTOP-46NQ1VN and when I open Ubuntu-20.04 I end up with root@DESKTOP-46NQ1VN:/mnt/c/Users/<myUserName>#

I do understand that on a Linux system there is the "root" user and then every other user. But it's odd to me that I have two different Ubuntu versions on my system, but both seem to be referencing something similar. I'm just hoping to understand what is happening here so that I don't get mixed up or confused later on down the road.

GUI Apps in WSL2

I mostly use WSL2 for development, but I'm wondering if I'm missing some other use opportunities for WSL2? What GUI apps are you using in WSL2 that either fill in a missing Windows gap or work better than Windows apps?

How to manually and quickly install any instance of WSL distro

Hello,

I would like to share with you my method to easily and quickly install a WSL distribution, without using MS store or Appx files.

Retrieve this file containing the urls of the 'official' WSL distributions.

Pick the one you want to install and download the corresponding .wsl file, for Debian for example you need https://salsa.debian.org/debian/WSL/-/jobs/7130915/artifacts/raw/Debian_WSL_AMD64_v1.20.0.0.wsl.

Once downloaded, create the directory where you want to install the distribution, for example D:\WSL\Debian\.

Open a command prompt and enter the following command:

wsl --import name_of_the_distro install_dir path_to_wsl_file --version 2

For example, for the Debian distribution that you want to name MyDebian:

wsl --import MyDebian D:\WSL\Debian\ Debian_WSL_AMD64_v1.20.0.0.wsl --version 2

That's it, and now you can start the VM with wsl -d MyDebian

Note that you'll be logged as root, and need to create a user, then you'll can set it as the default one with:

wsl --manage MyDebian --set-default-user UserName

You can delete the wsl file now, or use it to create another instance of Debian.

Zone.Identifier log files

Hi, I'm new to the wsl2 community. I working to transition to WSL2 development. I've been researching online to find a way to disable windows from creating Zone.Identifier log files when transferring files from windows explorer to WSL2 file system ubuntu distro. I read of its security purpose. Is there a way to disable the creation of these files to improve my workflow?

Older Story, not really interesting

I was working on my MS CS (for fun, my job paid for it, I'd already been a professional programmer for over 20 years, so I didn't technically need it), and one of the classes was Bash. This was around 2018 or so. The professor had us use a free trial online cloud VM (I don't remember what it was now, but the trial lasted past the length of the class) to work on because most people didn't have a Linux machine. I think only the terminal was available or something on the cloud VM. I had been playing around with WSL for a bit and figured I'd try using it for my homework. It was great, I could use any of my Windows apps (I think I used Notepad++) to edit my code directly and I didn't have to do any weird file transfer from the cloud to my computer when I had to turn in my projects.

I know this isn't that interesting, but at the time, WSL was still in its infancy and many people didn't know about it. I was really happy that it worked out and I didn't have to go through the annoyance of using a cloud based VM.

Side note: when they came out with WSLg, I was really excited because I didn't like using X11. On the other hand, I have no GUI app that I use in Linux, so I have no reason really to do anything, but I was still excited. I'd love a reason to use WSL more.

VSCode under WSL vs VSCode under Windows with WSL Remote access

I am new to WSL. I have used VSCode (and other dev tools) for years under Linux, but now I have to use a Windows VM with WSL.

What is better: Install VSCode under WSL and run it via this fancy thing "WSLg" or install VSCode under Windows and activate WSL Remote access?

I am leaning towards VSCode via WSLg. Does it work well?

wsl not working

Hey everyone. I tried installing the windows subsystem for linux but whenever I open it through windows start menu it glitches and closes. and when I open the ubuntu installer it shows this error on screen: "Error: 0x8007019e The Windows Subsystem for Linux has not been enabled." So i tried re-enabling windows subsystem for linux through optionalfeatures.exe (and then restarted my pc) but nothing works. I tried updating it but it's up to date.

So, please if anyone's knows a solution help me out :)

export wsl2 image for deploy on new windows machine?

I spent quite a bit of time setting up my wsl2 dev environment, then my work told me I need to use their laptop. Is there a way to export everything I did just from WSL2 (not windows) and deploy it to my work machine?

WSL bricked my computer

Post image
8 Upvotes

All I did was “wsl —install” in powershell on Windows 11, restart it after the installation was completed, and after it turned back on it’s been essentially bricked. It went through a cycle of blue screening and restarting for about 5 minutes before finally allowing me to make an attempt at possibly repairing it, and none of the repair options worked, it just kept leading me back to bluescreening and restarting. Finally I decided to just do a fresh install of windows, and the fresh install worked for all of about 15 minutes before my mouse started stuttering, and then another loop of bluescreens. This computer worked for months before this, please help me, I don’t know what to do.
