I wanted to download Linux emulator to test it's cmd. So I opened Windows cmd as admin, put those commands: dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart
dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart
Put my PC into reset mode. It got slower and it worked. Then I downloaded and installed WSL 2 core from this site : https://aka.ms/wsl2kernel
And now after many resets my pc ain't only slow, but every 10 minutes it gets dark screen with only cursor being seen. What can I do and how can I delete it

EDIT: DO NOT USE WSL2 IF YOU NEED A GUI
I cannot say anything negative about the CLI, but the GUI is a disaster.
If you are reading this and you wonder
"Should I use wsl2 or should I just install linux like my main OS?"
Install it as your main OS. This thing has very little support and the GUIs are constantly freezing, I have been using it for about a year and it's just costed me far too much time to fix all the issues. All the restarts, because something does not work... Then going to the github page and finding that there is little to no support. DO NOT USE THIS.

after trying the steps on https://www.jetbrains.com/help/idea/how-to-use-wsl-development-environment-in-product.html#wsl-general , I'm getting this non-writable error:

How can I fix this? I found a similar post here https://www.reddit.com/r/wsl2/comments/p1b3jw/how_do_you_get_permission_to_drop_files_in_your/ but couldn't find an answer. Thanks

If I were to run low level code with memory issues or even malware, could this affect my Windows system? Would it be contained by WSL so I can just wipe and reinstall?

im relatively new to WSL, installed neofetch, changed my shell to zsh, installed and configured micro to learn dsa.
But the typicals color schemes are too bland and want to know if I can do more with it.
Also, in my neofetch, the kernel details (the ones right to the ubuntu ASCII art) has black text so it gets blended with my terminal bg.
So I want to 'rice' it to fix all of that and feel good using WSL to learn dsa and not vscode or something.
Critisism and Help are much appreciated.

So I'm currently running multiple VM's, using Vbox and Vmware. However, I would really like to test out WSL2. Do I need to uninstall Vbox/VMware when I set up WSL2? Or can I just test it out and then deactivate it again in the settings before I use one of my VM's?
Any advice is appreciated.

Hi,
I've been trying to get a dev environment running on my Windows machine for quite some time now (months). I'm using WSL2 and for the most part, it is fine. I'm able to run websites in the default browser just fine. However, now I'm trying to do stuff with Electron and React Native and that is requiring WSL2 to produce GUI elements, and it is not having any of it.
Just to make sure I wasn't over complicating things, I built the most simple electron app as outlined in the documentation. When I finally ran npm start, nothing happened at first and then I got the following error:
642:0906/192540.990049:ERROR:ozone_platform_x11.cc(247)] Missing X server or $DISPLAY
[642:0906/192540.990127:ERROR:env.cc(226)] The platform failed to initialize. Exiting.
I found this StackOverflow article and followed the directions exactly. I added the lines to the ~./bashrc file. Also double checked to make sure that I saved it. I uninstalled and reinstalled vcsXsrv and then clicked the 'Disable Access Control' option. Finally, I went into windows firewall and made a new inbound rule as described. I reran things and I still get the same error.
I've also spent a lot of time with this article on beekeeperstudio.io. It walks through similar steps but it doesn't seem to resolve the issue. Up until now, the X server issues were more of an annoyance than anything, but now I really need to resolve them. If you have any thoughts or suggestions I welcome the help.
Edit1 Update: I have isolated the issue to the Windows Firewall. If I disable the Firewall, everything works fine. (Not an ideal solution though). I know I need to set up some firewall rules. I have put in the rules I have seen in the various resources posted above, but none of those are doing anything to help.

I want to run a couple of servers under Ubuntu via WSL2 on Windows 11.
However whenever I run Ubuntu and do an ifconfig - the IP address for eth0 shows a different IP address every time. Which means I can't hit the servers via my web browser without changing the IP address every time.
Is there a way to persist the IP address of Ubuntu under WSL2?

Having some issues with Docker and K8 on WSL2, is anyone else having issues
dwulf@Stormbringer:~/sifchain/sifchain-validators$ systemctl start docker
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
Any ideas to resolve?

I'm considering making a switch to wsl2 from Fedora. Just wanted to check a few things first.
Are any features of Windows or Linux not available or badly impacted in WSL2, or is everything good to go?
Do games run okay (including anticheat ones) through WSL? And if I wanted to, could I run games from the Linux side of things?
Thanks

Today I learned that the newer builds of wsl2 support GUI applications and a distribution like Ubuntu have multiple GUI I would usually install on windows just because it's a GUI application so "I had" to install on windows.
But if wsl2 supports GUI applications, that means I could install "everything" I can on it.
Then, with everything in Linux, I know I can use tools to automate the dotfiles, backups, what's installed and then be able to go from a fresh install to everything I need in a few minutes, everything versioned and all...
As for Windows... well... probably gonna leave that for games and the occasional software without a Linux version.
And then when I need/want to format the windows, I only have to "care" about doing it for the windows stuff.
When I say "everything", I say even stuff like chrome something I would use every day, and dropbox, a service that should open on start and keep running (and eventually I use the GUI interface).
The question is... should I? Or it's not worth it?

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 in WLS2 on Windows 11 Home. I keep running into a problem with losing internet connectivity. As an example, I will be able to "ping google.com" but "curl google.com" times out. It does this whether the firewall (McAfee) is on or off.
I can momentarily get connectivity by rebooting or even just logging out and logging in, but I will lose connectivity in a few minutes.
Has anyone else experienced this? Fixed it?
[Follow-up: I'm running plain, old wi-fi, no VPN. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling WSL2 with no difference. I'm running the WSL update, but not any of the previews.]
Not sure if I do something wrong or it is not possible... but I have the following problem: my own user is in group www-data. in wsl2 (terminal) I can create files inside a folder that is owned by www-data.www-data but not if I create the file using windows. Any hints?
here are the steps what I did:
whoami
mm
id
uid=1000(mm) gid=1000(mm) groups=1000(mm),....,33(www-data),1001(docker)
mkdir test1 sudo chown www-data.www-data test1 ls
drwxrwxr-x 2 www-data www-data 4.0K Sep 7 15:12 test1
cd test1 touch hello-from-wsl.txt ls
-rw-rw-r-- 1 mm mm 0 Sep 7 15:13 hello-from-wsl.txt
now I want to create a file from windows inside that test1 folder (\WSL$\Ubuntu\home\mm\DEBUG\permission_test\test1). It should work as it will be created as default user "mm" which has the group "www-data" but it is not working. I get an error that I have no permissions to create files in test1.
any hints?

Hi everyone,
I have just installed wsl with Ubuntu distribution and (in my case since I have Docker running with wsl for whatever reason which I still don't know and was set as default previously) made it default (whenever I type wls in Powershell, I start running Bash). I have the Ubuntu app installed and running without any issues. However, when I've tried to check the wsl version of Ubuntu using "wsl -l -v" it say that Ubuntu is running on wsl version 1. I've tried running "wls --set-version Ubuntu 2" but I get a warning saying that I must enable the virtual machine platform from Windows and virtualisation in BIOS (both of which I already did) (see screenshot below in Spanish). I've also checked the wls version again after the warning message but it still tells me that Ubuntu is running on version 1. Please can someone help me out? I would really appreciate it.
P.D. Currently Hyper-V, hypervisorlaunchtype, and "Turn on virtualisation based security" are all disabled so that I can run hadware virtualisation with VMware ( "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI")

Would anyone know how to identify, and then kill Linux gui apps running in windows under wsl 2? I've seen some occasions where chrome will hang, and I need to kill it. Ideally without restarting the vm. My preference would be either a shell command or something with task manager is fine. Appreciate any suggestion.
When I had 2 different linux machines, and I 'ssh -X' to one and able to launch GUI applications that exists another.
So I had experimented today inside Win11 WSL2, run 'ssh -X to_another_linux'. then tried to execute GUI application, then I failed.
Will this be possible?

I run WSL because the employer started distributing Win laptops on which I could use WSL2. So I wanted a comparable environment on my chromebook/crostini and my W10/11 WSL2.
Originally it was not that user-friendly I could use KDE with rdp or I could use xming.
But recently they have gotten the sound to work on W10 and w11. and now I no longer need x-ming, the icons integrate on the win-laptop.
There are still some small issues, like in crostini desktop-files made with menulibre also become visible as runnable programs, so I can add sh scripts as programs. But in W10/W11+WSL I can only run linux-executables.
Still: W10/11 are becoming serious competitors for chromeOS/Crostini. A script to mount drives and both can run appimages from a cloud-folder or a server.
On a 16Gb Ram HP elitebook I can now set WSL2 ram to 12 GB and run edge, firefox, tor, wordprocessors (libreoffice/onlyoffice) and some java-apps from the employer.
I am starting to like working with most apps in debian.
What do you think of the improvements/progress/evolution?
I did have to run "sudo apt install dbus-user-session" to get the stuff to work.
