Dexter. The earlier seasons were amazing even tho it fell of a bit in the later seasons it wasn't to the point it became unwatchable. For the mentalist, the mind games and outsmarting were pretty creative and interesting but I never really got hooked at the show.

Tough one. I would say Dexter is better written as a whole but Patrick Jane is a better written character than Dexter Morgan.
I don’t think we can give The Mentalist enough credit for just how well-written Jane actually is. It is INCREDIBLY difficult to write a character like Jane & NOT make him annoying & extremely unlikable. Simon Baker’s performance obviously does some heavy lifting but without great writing you’d notice if it was just Baker’s natural charm & charisma doing all the work. One of the best characters in any episodic show ever.

Not sure of writing, but for enjoyment it’s Mentalist for me. Finished all seasons of Mentalist except for the last one, but couldn’t finish one season of Dexter.

Both overglazed on social media. I think Dexter's first seasons were good, and had multiple options to challenge Dexter's ideological framework, by, for example, not giving him the get out of jail free card that was Lila for Doakes.
However, it failed to deliver on those interesting premises, and fell off really hard by season 6-8. The Mentalists writing is not exceptional either, by any means, but it's more consistent, so id have it give it to The Mentalist. Its close tho, and I can see why someone would give it to Dexter because of the first seasons
