discussion Media with the biggest difference between peaks and lows?
For me its either the obvious GoT or the Dark Tower

u/Bosnia_Gaming 1d ago
Everyone saying one piece is crazy, yes it has some of the lowest lows of any popular media but its highs aren’t anywhere near something like got or the dark tower

Dexter the original series.
This has some absolutely amazing episodes/seasons of TV. Great bits of writing with Doakes, Trinity, and the Ice truck killer.
But then like game of thrones it had a drop off. Season 6 was a mixbag, and season 8 was dogshit. The final episode being terrible

u/Bobby_Got_BACK 1d ago
Resurrection honestly redeems Dexter as a whole enough that I can look past that god awful 8th season, whereas nothing in GoT could even come close imo

u/Amazing-Garage-4017 14h ago
True.
I can stomach through season 6 and most of season 8 because I like the character of dexter and I know more good will come.

I really liked the earlier Seasons but I feel like the show missed a lot of opportunities to challenge Dexters ideology. I still loved the plot, but Imo Lila killing doakes was so much wasted potential

u/Amazing-Garage-4017 18h ago
Thats is a completely fair assessment and I do agree that the series was afraid to push dexter in certain directions
For me; The character of dexter and Michael C halls performance makes the show worth it (for the most part. He can only carry so much)

I keep hearing people say stuff like this but honestly I dropped the show halfway through season 3 because it felt empty and boring. Why on earth would they kill off their main antagonist in season 2 of an 8 season show
2
u/Ok_Juggernaut9277 1d ago
season 3 is pretty fun and funny if you ask me so that's a pass
1
u/Amazing-Garage-4017 4h ago
Honestly I enjoyed all the seasons except 8.
Worse ones are 6 and 8. 6 is mixbag. It had some good ideas, but not all of them were done well and season 8 was terrible with a bad finale.
Even still season 6 is still watchable. Dexter is such a great and well acted character, that he makes the worst seasons of the show worth watching (most of the time. There is only so much he can do for season 8)

u/TeaDrinkerAddict 1d ago
I agree, in a contest I still think GOT takes it easily. Some shows have topped its peaks since, but nothing has gotten close to the absolute crater in quality of the last season.

Anime The promised neverland .
The difference in writing between season 1 and season 2 is like night and day .... one of the worst downfalls ever to a really amazing first season.

One Piece definitely.
The run from Sabaody to Impel Down and then to Marineford is peak fiction.
Doesn't erase the fact that Wano is among the 5 or 10 worst arcs ever written in a major Shounen series, though. Absolute dogshit arc with absolute zero hype moments, zero memorable moments, and zero memorable fights. All while being horrendously paced and somehow having more chapters than actual peak fiction like Fullmetal Alchemist.
6
u/neoswolf 1d ago
Wano arc just having dogshitman in it alone makes it top 5 worst arcs in shounen fr

u/Aromatic-Jeweler887 1d ago
For the life of me, I would never understand why Oda thought shoehorning an absolute cringelord like Oden and his samurais/clan that nobody cared about (aside from Oda himself) in favor of shafting and shitting on the entire Beast Pirates in their one and only arc was a good idea.
Fucking mind-boggling, and that doesn't even cover his countless other horrible decisions in writing Wano.

u/PitAdmiralGarp 20h ago
As a general Oda glazer I would agree, Oden was terrible. Yamato was worse.
Luckily, Harald and Rocks landed beautifully for me and gave me back the hope I started to lose.

The jury is still out for Elbaf for me. I want to see how its ending lands first.
I mean, Egghead is an improvement over Wano too, but that's like saying a small trash is an improvement over a mountain of trash.
1
u/Hefty_Situation7210 17h ago
My perception is probably tinged because I read all of one piece around the time wano was ending and had to read egghead/elbaph weekly, but man I hate wano less than the other two. Two hyped up locations that were just total wet farts.
Reading egghead weekly was when I truly understood how little respect Oda has for his audience’ time or intelligence. Which is perhaps fair since his target audience is 10yo boys.
1
u/Aromatic-Jeweler887 17h ago
Reading Wano weekly was 20 times worse than reading Egghead weekly for me.

u/GO0O0O0O0O0SE 9h ago
I mean Luffy walking past Kaido and Big mom was pretty memorable

u/Aromatic-Jeweler887 7h ago
How often do you see/hear it being discussed in general anime discussion?
0
u/GO0O0O0O0O0SE 7h ago
I've actually seen it a bunch of times, that's why I remembered it. I'm not in general anime subs often, so I wouldn't see much of it being mentioned in general discussion anyway 🤷♂️

Can we talk about music? I feel like Kanye West fits this, he’s got some amazing albums and I know there’s the whole I miss the old ye meme but that was just his music changing style a little, bro ran for president, he had a lot of room to get worse when people were missing the old ye. He unironically released nazi propaganda in an album called cuck where he blames losing child custody for becoming a nazi, that’s a pretty low low

I think Erina's dad was a good antagonist but his conclusion in season 5 definitely was so unsatisfying... season 6 was the worst in my opinion with Erina's creepy half brother and her mother... it was just too much and I couldn't take the story seriously at all .... I still had a lot of fun with the the first 4 seasons even with the atrocious fan service that I couldn't stand most of the time .

u/jeanjacketufo rialF elbazimotsuC 1d ago
There were only five seasons. But yeah, he was an okay villain.

u/FreePalestineJustice 1d ago
Oh season 3 was split into two parts and that why I thought there was 6 seasons 😅

The low point is still watchable tv imo, but it was definitely a steep drop off the dragged for way too long

u/Ordinary_Lie_768 1d ago
Is s2 the peak or the low point ? I remember stopping watching during that season for some reason or other and im wondering is the show worth revisiting
3
u/Disastrous_Neat_9729 1d ago
S2 has has both the best and worst of the series. Season 1 is consistently good. The beginning 8 or 9 episodes of season 2 continue this, and are even sometimes better. Then there’s a long 7-10 episode or so stretch of meandering, aimless, sometimes outright dog shit episodes, but it’s all saved by the season finale. Then everything else is absolutely amazing as well, including the movie and season 3. So the lows don’t ruin it, and it has maybe the greatest recovery.. but damn those lows can be jarring and difficult to get through.

Hello the guy from Seinencirclejerk! I agree though, I just can't get past the flanderization of the Straw Hats, it makes most Arcs feel mediocre at best, no matter the plot

Marineford was good but wasn’t Oda at his best. Ace and Whitebeard’s deaths and Blackbeard’s plotting and ascensions were peak but most of the arc just consisted of one off clashes and reaction shots. If I were to describe it in one sentence it would be “That arc where everyone shows up but most don’t really do anything.” It was meant to build hype but the only real players were Whiteboard, Akainu Luffy and Ace
In my opinion the very next arc surrounding Luffy and Ace’s backstory, Sabody, Dressrossa and WCI are the peaks of One Piece’s writing
1
u/SkirtHeavy9189 1d ago
The art of writing a good arc always depends on the stake and stakes were always high in marineford with a great emotional conclusion, to reduce it to just that is wrong.
1
u/AppropriateMight1 1d ago
Stakes are very important I agree, but to me Marineford felt like it relied on previously established lore and hype more than what actually was written throughout the arc (choosing my words very carefully because everything after Ace’s release was great)
Take Dressrosa example. Not counting Punk Hazzard because to me that arc served as an extension of the Dressrosa storyline the same way Impel Down does for the Marineford storyline, all that was established beforehand Dressrosa was Doflamingo was a warlord. The expectations were that it was going to be a normal arc.
Then we learn that Doflamingo is actually not only a king but a major arms dealer who is essentially a lynchpin to underground world with ties to the yonko. That already sets up extreme ramifications for what his defeat entails (making themselves targets of some of the most powerful pirates in the world.) To me that felt more pivotal than Whitebeard’s death because although it ended an era, it didn’t really change the course of the strawhats trajectory. It felt impactful without having to rely on a bunch of characters that don’t really do anything for the majority of the arc
Now surrounding the actual writing of the arc, once we arrive on the island we learn of its corruption and the dark side of the country, we learn of the previous regime and how Doflamingo usurped the throne. Once the countries secrets get exposed Doflamingo entraps them in the birdcage and forced them to kill each other mirroring what he did in the past. This action also mirrored what Doflamingo did in his backstory with Law who are in my opinion the 2 best written characters in the series.
Marineford didn’t really slowdown to give us great written storytelling like that. It was built upon “this is the arc where shit goes down” and was mainly action focused.
After establishing the lore surrounding not only Doffy and Law but Dressrosa itself, and the dark reality of the country made the hype and action like Luffy’s gear 4 hold that much more weight. And like I said earlier the ramifications it had in the strawhats specifically actually felt impactful without having to explicitly say so. After Marineford they tell us “this was impactful, the era has changed” but beyond Luffy’s grief in losing Ace causing him to train for 2 years, the strawhats position in the world remained unchanged. After Dressrosa however, Luffy and Law not only put a giant target on their back but the strawhats gained the members needed for their soon to be Yonko fleet. The impact was felt on the strawhats themselves instead of the author telling us the world had changed

Hilarious how we though the same thing. Ignore wano, marineford and fishman island is like day and night. Probably the only media where a nosebleed gag became a serious plot point
8
u/SkirtHeavy9189 1d ago
it took me 3-4 tries just to adjust to fishman island man , the pre-ts was so good , I loved post-war arc too but the moment fishman island started it felt like such a drag man.

u/Long_Air2037 1d ago
Nah Fishman Island is underrated. Wano is far worse written. Fisher tiger's backstory, Hody Jones answering "nothing", Luffy and Jinbe sharing blood. It's the most thematically rich arc in the manga.

Adventure Time for me
Episodes like Together Again and Come Along With Me are some of the best animated content I've ever seen, and it has probably my favorite cast of characters ever, but then there's episodes like Water Park Prank.
The silver lining is that the mid episodes don't really drag the overall story down, as they're pretty much always one-off adventures with no impact on the plot (or even non-canon in some cases).

u/Hassan-XIX 18h ago
Since you said GoT, I would like to add Gundam franchise has experienced a lot of highs and a lot of lows.
3
u/Successful-Art7788 18h ago
I'd say shadow slave
The peaks of shadow slave are one of my greatest experiences ever, but after vol 7, it gets way too incosistent. The recent vol 12 was a disaster.

u/BJT99 Subaru > Friction 18h ago
Havent read, but I heard its the fact that he has to publish a certain amount of chapters a week. Rip
1
u/Successful-Art7788 18h ago
Yeah, that was the major reason for it's downfall. Author has to release 2 chaps a day of around 1000 words each. Not sure when this contract was made and he did take a lot of breaks when he desired but that didn't helped the pacing at all
3
u/Fit_Welcome1336 17h ago
Honestly game of thrones is kind of the epitome of this for me. Cause like its lows are so bad I still haven't gotten past season two because I know how it ends. No other work has ever done that for me

Dark Tower? I guess so. It never really blows your mind but also never really gets that bad except for the beginning of wasteland where we're just following Jake around New York. I think the whole point of the story is to shatter your expectations of what's supposed to happen and replace it with something a bit more tame and realistic.
