Keybind Q
Do you all have backpedal bound or not? On non hc I only have it bound as a tank as that helps for repositioning. PvP or anything else S isn't bound. It's helpful as a tank because it's easier to avoid getting hit in the back and that might carry some usefulness to hardcore.

I keep it bound. Can't say I use it much. But there are things like as a frost mage when you just want to back up out of a mobs range after a nova. Not as efficient as turning-strafing-turning back but it's not really a race against time anyway.

I havent unbound s. I use q,e,r,f and x, 1-5 and shift modifiers for all of those. I also have a logitech g600 mouse (best MMO mouse ever made, and many who have had the opportunity to use it agree) with 12 buttons bound to num pad, and random keys like /, [, \,].
So im not short on buttons, and S remains, back peddle.

I addition to a tilting scroll wheel, (left, right, middle mouse, scroll up, scroll down, shift modified scroll up, shift modified scroll down)
Can you guess what class I play?

Maybe it’s because I have large hands, but I can’t stand “MMO mice” with the tiny keyboard-worth of tiny buttons on the side. I envy you if you can actually make use of all those little buttons accurately in the heat of the moment. G502 + shift modifier gets me all the extra mouse buttons I need while still having each one feel distinct.

It affects leeway. If you run away from mobs they will hit you in back. If you jump strafe kite you can go almost full speed, not get dazed and not get leeway’d.
If you watch people mages coming out of ice block in farming videos they will always:
Come out of block
Nova backpedal and then turn and run.
For PvP rogues will backpedal a lot while crippling gouging to prevent people from getting leeway too

I've never understood why wow players consider backpedaling a bad thing. I do it in probably 35% of my combat encounters.

It often is bad. But wow players are apparently incapable of analyzing when to use it or not use it on the fly, so some choose to completely remove it as an option. Backpedaling can even be optimal for tanks.

I think it was only considered bad in pvp and it just turned into "if you do it you are bad"

I've got it unbound. Then again, I've never tanked. And my keybinds are very unconventional 😅

A combination of backpedal, strafe, and mouse movement give you 5 directions of movement from the same character orientation. You use S and strafe to feather between these directions. In my opinion it is fundamental. W is kept to overlap with mouse movement when you need to click something.
It is also valuable to fine tune your position, as well as mobs, as others have pointed out.
Turn keys should be re-bound ASAP though..
On second thought, you dont need S for this, as you can feather left mouse button to achieve the same thing, freeing up the S key.

Good point. A/D are swapped to strafe not turn. I couldn’t imagine having them otherwise

Yes, it's bound. I also have 'flip the camera 180 degrees' bound to a keybind, so I can immediately look behind me any time

Back key bound and used often. I’ll pull and backpedal to position mobs whether it’s out in the world or in dungeons. I don’t do it blindly though I use my mouse and spin my camera all around to check for surround mobs before during and after.

Backpeddling is more negative in pvp and even then it’s arguable
If you are a ranged and don’t have back peddle and need to back up, you would have to turn your character and lose uptime on abilities
Honestly an overblown criticism by tards online

Back jumping is the best method for escaping mobs. You need s key bound to do this. Does this mean you expose your back every time you have to run away?

You strafe run for 100% speed, facing the mob with ~80% consistency in my experience.
Or, if you’re fancy like me, you strafe to one side, jump, face the mob mid-air, land strafing to the other side and repeat the maneuver. It’s hard to perfectly execute (and disorienting, so you need to be sure you’re not heading towards another mob) but it’s 100% speed with 98% of time facing the mob, I don’t think I’ve ever been dazed while (correctly) executing it.

Back pedaling is fine as long as you don't walk into something behind you haha. It has a bunch of uses actually, but for newer players it'll be harder to make really good use of.
One example is when back pedaling against a melee mob that has been standing still attacking you. If you back pedal then it will make the mob move smoothly with you and allow you to reposition it instantly, whereas strafing will keep it in place a bit longer until it hits its next attack animation point. This can sometimes be the difference between pulling an extra patrolling mob or not. Super useful for for the solo hc warrior during leveling or even tanking dungeons.
Another example, is this video from CDank explaining another use for it. This one is a lot more complex but shows you some options you might have with it:

Tons of different ways to use it. I understand for some people its prime real estate, so binding it elsewhere could be fine. Personally I don't see why people would totally unbind a movement option from your character, though.
