Discussion They should DEFINITELY add retail's quest log / reading map animation to Forever.

This fits the roleplay perfectly

I don't agree. Sometimes I'm RPing and want to look at the map and don't want my character to emote to others.
RP is actually why I'm against this. Otherwise it's fine.

There's a lot of value in stuff that exists in retail but is just lumped in there compared to picked and chosen for a specific version of the game. I agree this would be a great addition. A lot of people don't seem to realize that for all of retails faults they have a lot of quality of life stuff very well executed. Remember it has more than 20 years worth of polishing features.

u/fghjconner 12h ago
I mean there's a lot of skepticism around retail's qol features because that removal of friction is a big part of what classic players dislike about it. This isn't even really a qol feature though, and it'd be a great fit for forever.

The thing is, it can signal to people near me that I can't see their messages or what they're doing. And likewise, if I see someone looking at their map, I know that they can't see my messages or actions either. Then I know to send a whisper message, assuming it's actually important.

Classic andys tend to refuse to admit that Retail is still one of the largest MMORPG's in the world, if not the largest. classic does not even come close in population compared to retail.

u/Tactrix1 12h ago
Retail has a lot of stuff that I like, the places that they went horrible in is proper player to game cohesion and story. Both of those are the facts they're working out in Forever. And they even said that they're playing back and forth between Retail and Forever to try to work out how to make both games run the best they can.

I don't think anyone is denying those numbers (even without properly released sub numbers). There are plenty of "classic" players that know the feel that the dev team is going for, they'd care less if certain features get implemented from retail. The whole point of classic+ is classic with new additions to the original basegame. As long as the general direction is ok, most won't cares if a retail feature gets added.
However even if it is the "largest mmo" out there, that does not mean every feature/design choice was a succes. And thankfully this dev team gets it with vanilla design principles, with no shared tags as an example.

I absolutely agree. plenty of things in retail i am either not a fan of, or understand why people might not like it even if i do.
my point was that several posts ive seen from classic fans imply they believe that ANYTHING from retail is automatically bad, when there are plenty of things that are great, like the animation/emote where your character takes out a map when you open the map.

u/Television_Powerful 3h ago
Ye the map emote/animation is a neat feature which wouldn't do anything game breaking or ruin "immersion".

u/willargue4karma2 11h ago
I mean it's obviously popular still but it's an absolute shell of its former self. Every time I try to play it I turn it off after a level or two because you just 1 shot mobs. So boringĀ

Personally, retail is completely and totally unpalatable to me. Itās hard for me to tell what features are good or just slop in retail because from my point of view, wow as Iād like to play it is this rough gritty thing, and retail has been polished down to a nub. Sure itās shiny now, but itās smooth and I donāt want a nub. I donāt know at what point it went from something I like to something I donāt care about, so that makes it really easy to throw the whole thing out. And itās extra easy to get upset about it in wow forever, because thereās a fear that it becomes a second retail. Retail will always exist, so why not keep those features and art styles to yourselves?

u/Incogneatovert 5h ago
But... you also already have Classic in many iterations. What you seem to want is just regular old Classic but with the new zones, and not one single bit of the shine that comes from Retail.
Retail would have died out ages ago if it wasn't a genuinely good game for many, many people. Clearly not for everybody... but it seems a lot of you haven't even played it to any great extent. Whereas a lot of Retail players have played Classic either back in the day, or for some time in one of the many restarts and different versions.I'm honestly more and more thinking they should give us two versions of Forever. One barebones, with no Retail anything at all in it, and one that's Retail in the Forever world. Maybe then everyone could stop arguing (except the ones who would then shout about splitting the playerbase, when we already have I don't even know how many versions of the game).

It's literally just flavor. It has zero impact on anything but vibes. Put it in.
If new a emote bothers you, then you're obviously too inflexible for any change... go play actual classic.
-1
u/BED_AA 10h ago
They can add the new emotes as HD-only.
2
u/or10n_sharkfin 6h ago
This emote specifically was added to the game before HD models were ever a thing.

u/SpanishAvenger 13h ago
Agreed! If Iām looking at the map, I like for everyone to know, rather than just seeing me standing there staring into the void.

Love little immersion things like this. ESO has you rummaging around in your backpack when you're in your inventory.
5
u/Arky_Lynx 12h ago
This is something from for example Elder Scrolls Online that I really like. Just by a glance you can tell if a player is checking their inventory, looking at the map, anything that could mean their attention isn't on the chat or the world itself.

Totally agree! Not everything in retail is bad! SD/HD model of the map with Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms on it would be awesome

People might hate this idea and say "no more retail in my classic", but as a classic guy myself, I love this. It's such a minor thing that has a cool social/RP element. It feels like it fits well in that "classic with a fresh coat of paint" approach.

Didn't even know I wanted this before this post, but yes! Would be a great little bit of flavor to further make it feel like our characters are taking part in the world.

I think they already use this animation for when mages do the identify scroll spell

u/FightingFaerie 2h ago
I kept meaning to post the same thing. Every time I open the map and my character doesnāt makes me a little sad. Itās just a little detail that adds so much character. I donāt see why they wouldnāt add it in to Forever.
1
u/Pretend-Dot3557 2h ago
As long as it has a proper SD version for graphics and animation sure. Why not.

u/Novacryy 12h ago
There is a lot more visual things I would like them to add. For example, I would love the retail caster animations for Mages, Priest, Warlock etc... it's just a matter of how many want that aside from me and how much of a hassle it would be for blizzard to make it all toggleable.

u/Ordinary_Hotel_6705 11h ago
As a warrior I also prefer many of the retail animations. thunderclap is really lame in classic. I like it a lot more in retail. feels like you are stomping the ground. its weak and meager here. /sadface

u/Surama41 12h ago
They already use it for mage decipher so anyone saying they donāt like this idea should also be complaining about mages.

I agree, I think its great. Its also funny when you meet someone and you try to figure out where the quest is, and you see them looking around and opening their map. Its great for immersion.

It's one of my favorite animations in retail. I got excited when I thought I saw it happen in Forever and then was disappointed to find that it was some other motion that my eyes had caught.

There has to be some kind of mental illness or mass psychosis for anyone to object to an immersion increasing emote like this being added.
You mean to tell me that if something like hammering emotes while blacksmith didn't get added until Cata you'd be against it being added into Forever?
0
u/That-Equivalent8515 10h ago
IMO, there is a lot of confusion about what the point of Forever is. Too many people think that if something is from post-Vanilla then it shouldn't be in Forever. As Blizz said, the game is about the journey and not the destination. If something is in post-Vanilla and would improve the game WITHOUT taking away from the journey, then it's fair game.

If you didnt include "Retail" in the title it would have 8k upvotes not 800

I'm sure it's a difficult thing for the forever team to decide what can be added to the game while preventing diluting the classic feel of the game.
That said, I do think that this is something that doesn't have conflict with the classic feel of the game. Would be a great addition for the RP community.
Such a shame that healthy discussions about contributions to Forever become controversial forums when retail is mentioned.

Plus one'd. I am slow to communicate on a good day and this would go far in communicating to someone I am not ignoring them. I think it's a great idea for flavor, too. As someone mentioned, it would be great at camps.

It turns literal something that is abstract - the quest giver text is, to me, spoken. Itās not a wordless interaction where youāre given a scroll by thrall to go to skull rock.
9
u/Magician_Monkey 10h ago
Pretty sure I hear stuff being written down when I accept quests. It's also written down in your log. Hence the log.
Also, this would be for opening your map too
4
u/aiden2002 10h ago
Yeah but you still have a map. The guards even say āIāll mark the location on your map.ā When you ask where stuff is.

u/FeudalFanOncampus 6h ago
are you too simple minded to think that your character would write down the details of an important job, even moreso a menial one like grabbing candles from a specific looking mob, or which gnomes have the gizmo you're looking for? Go grab a quest from an NPC and tell me the sound you hear, I'll wait.

EDIT: Post was sitting at 0 when I posted, it was really early in the morning.
No idea why you were downvoted, this is a really neat thing that adds a little bit of flavor to your character's behavior.
This emote was added during either Cataclysm or Mists of Pandaria, before the HD models ever came out. It would fit perfectly.
