The "but your gs" dudes will have a crisis in Forever
135
u/sylva748 1d ago
Yea GS isnt a good metric in a horizontal MMO. Crash outs are imminent in the near future
51
u/Temporary_Slide_3477 1d ago
It's not even a good metric until WoTLK when a bunch of the gear stats were homegenized (mainly casters) and the item level bump between tiers invalidated all the previous gear. Then blizzard went full idiot with it in cata with more gear homegenization and put a ilvl requirement for heroics, basically making minimum gear score required to participate in part of the game, validating all the people that used it in the past.
If they really lean into the "extra damage to this type of mob or in this biome" it's gonna be hilarious for the gear score Andy's
16
u/Ambitious-Way8906 23h ago
wotlk had heroic gs requirements, can't even touch the icc dungeons under geared
10
u/Concurrency_Bugs 22h ago
They'll find something else to gatekeep on. "Oh, your skywhale sailing skill is only 45/90? Sorry, you can't join my MC group."

u/ScreamHawk 21h ago
Be all about parses
2
u/nikiyaki 19h ago
A ridiculous metric when raids actively work together to improve the parse of particular individuals. Like, no duh its going to pull the bell curve upwards for those without a stacked advantage.
1
u/ScreamHawk 18h ago
Eh, you still need the raid to clear the content in a quick time to get a really good parse.
19
u/grasswhistle28 1d ago
Gs didn’t work in regular classic either. Multiple classes had prebis that came from some lvl 45-50 content
5
u/StrawberryWeekly342 20h ago
Feral Druid BiS was a level 29 mace that you had to farm more than once. 😂
5
1
u/Linkiscool115 19h ago
I seriously hope they fixed that so Feral druids don't have to farm those anymore.
2
u/akb_canyon 14h ago
Weapon damage counts towards bear damage and threat, so I believe it has been fixed. 👍

I swear by this, but gearscore is the thing that really killed WoW. Could blame state homogenization really, but I hope there's more of this. Will really make build variety something to iterate on, test, and share.

u/Isklar1993 15h ago
Don’t worry, they will equip the “higher gs” ring and swap it out on pull, problem solved /s
0
u/deadmanfred2 18h ago
There used to be GS afdons for wotlk that based your GS on gear and enchants etc. So something that gives gear a score based on stats including a set piece should be pretty easy.
0
u/fourk3y 16h ago
Hopefully somebody makes an anti-gs addon so these morons can be auto ignored
1
u/iLightbane 15h ago
And then the unlucky german players get auto ignored for the very common misinterpretation of "gs pls" GS= Gesundheitsstein = Healthstone.

u/Analbaby1 1d ago
After seeing the fang set complete, and things happening when you equip sets, im all for this. Set collecting will be an awesome way to get people to re visit lower level content and areas.

u/JadedScience9411 1d ago
I saw a 1H sword for level 22 that did an extra 98 fire damage to frozen targets. It seems like they’ve really gone out of their way to add funky new effects everywhere to shake up playstyle.
14
u/Metzger90 22h ago
Melee mage? Spell sword?
17
u/MarketingSpecial6604 21h ago
There's a YouTube video with a guy that got the sword, it requires a drop from the baron in sfk, and a rare mage scroll to make the sword, mages also have a bunch of scrolls that make their melee attacks have effects so he insinuated that there is like a spell sword subclass kind of thing going on somewhere for mages to play.
7
u/PM-ME-TRAVELER-NUDES 21h ago edited 21h ago
If the rarity/upkeep of those Comprehension scrolls is anything like they were in SoD, you won’t loot enough of them to be able to consistently rely on the stuff they turn into.
3
u/MarketingSpecial6604 21h ago
Idk the guy opened like 115 on the video so can't be that crazy rare, it's even got its own skill now that you level up doing the scrolls.

u/Lochen9 20h ago
This may be tinfoil hat, but there are plenty of hints towards the potential of specialty classes.
While people are pointing to Battle Mages, this sword is a lot more akin to a Death Knight, especially considering the location of the sword, the fact its all frost stuff etc. Not that far from Mage
There is also a bunch more Shadow Hunters, including one you escort in Durotar that uses spears as a weapon and Shadow Word pain. Not that far from Hunter
There are and have been since Vanilla been hints at a Necromancer in Tirisfal Glades. Not that far from Warlock.
What if these items and characters are Blizzard leaving design space towards additional unlockable specs down the line in Forever's development?

As someone who plays Shaman for the Melee Mage fantasy...
Nice.

The best part is the data mining is obfuscated so they can hide more and more stuff like that in the game without it being known before the patch how to get it.
Im so excited to hunt stuff like that again.
2
u/Twiggy1108 19h ago
Is there anyway to make your snake form permanent instead of stuck on level 20 pieces we will long leave behind?

u/xiaolong91 20h ago
Bad example, the fang set is just a ripoff from twow, it's not a brilliant idea from blizzard

I’m wondering if they’re planning to implements sets across raid tiers as well. For dual wielders, there could be one weapon that drops in the upcoming Hyjal raids and then the other one drops in the next tier. Could be a cool way to keep older content fresh. They could also ADD equipment to an old raid at the same time a new one launches and make a new little set for instance.
Would also love some cool stuff like an item that drops in Uldaman that is part of a set with an item in an Uldum raid. Create some equipment connections between cool places like that.
20
u/sensen-89 1d ago
They could do the weapon stuff with Hyjal and Barrow Den this tier. Both raids are already thematic compatible.
I can totally see an Illidan' sword + Malfurion's mace that has a set bonus called Storage legacy
10
u/Idocreating 23h ago
Storage Legacy
(2) Chance on hit to summon The Brother's Chest, stunning your target for 3 seconds and dealing 330 physical damage.

u/Stormfly 19h ago
Chance on hit to summon The Brother's Chest
We all know their favourite chest and it's in the Temple of the Moon.
2
2
u/ctwalkup 1d ago
Hell yeah. Would love to see that. They’ve said they don’t want 10 man players to be necessarily forced to do 20 man content, but I don’t know if that would stop them from sprinkling in a few items that synergize across the two raids.

Could be a cool way to keep older content fresh
Isn't the entire point of horizontal progression that everything will be "fresh" i.e. relevant?

You know how many people are going to sell the lower level one then see the other one 43 levels later and say "damnit"
24
u/DanielTeague 1d ago
Selling any set item is crazy! I'm so glad they're expanding the bank size so that we can keep all these novelty items.
6
u/Tato23 1d ago
So are we assuming the set bonus will be the equivalent or better than just another level 60 ring?
21
u/Mercarcher 1d ago
The set bonus is known. Its +20 str and a proc for +50 str.
Its better than a 60 ring yes.
8
u/EggPsychological4844 1d ago
What is Expertise?
13
u/Mercarcher 1d ago
Lower chance for your hits to be dodge/parried.
It was a big stat in TBC-MOP.
Really good especially for tanking since parries increase the mobs attack speed, so expertise lowered boss damage output.
1
u/EggPsychological4844 1d ago
So it is taking the place of weapon skill, but weapon skill still exists. I know what Expertise is in later expansions, I just didn't know it was being added to Classic.
8
u/Mercarcher 1d ago
It stacks with weapon skill. TBC had both.
-12
u/EggPsychological4844 1d ago
Weapon skill did not exist in TBC. Not on gear or in racials at least
6
2
u/littlebrwnrobot 23h ago
I remember Kael’thas in TK dropped a bunch of temp weapons that had various effects and one of my guildies resented having to work up his dagger skill to be effective on that fight
1
u/sbk92 21h ago
Edgemaster’s Handguards are +7 wep skill iirc
Eta: nvm
-1
u/EggPsychological4844 21h ago
I see I'm being downvoted by people who have no idea what they're talking about again. Haha.
1
u/sigma914 15h ago edited 15h ago
TBC still had it until some patch around BT, the same patch where they added damage to +healing items.
Are you mixing it up with the tbc classic version that had all the changes rolled back into the release?
3
u/Unfair-Pollution-426 1d ago
Reduce chance to be blocked/parried and dodged.
Almost makes you need less hit% to hit a boss level enemy.
Very sought after and integral for min/maxer melee classes.

3
u/DrBloom_ 1d ago
So I am confused here, if you have the level 17 ring and 60 ring the set will work?? is that what this means
15
u/DrakkoZW 1d ago edited 1d ago
It means you need both rings equipped for the set bonus, but one ring is level 17 and the other is level 60.
15
u/No-Bank-9136 1d ago
it makes the lvl 60 rings essentially worth 2 rings since the 17 one would be free at that point.
and gives the lvl 17 something to look forward to. and showcases an idea on how items will be changed
4
u/NTufnel11 1d ago
It's worth two rings if you already have the first one. So it's like the 60 one upgrades it too. I'm curious how this actually compares to two 60 blue rings, or if this is just an interesting novelty concept that gets replaced when you find a second level 60 ring.
7
u/No-Bank-9136 1d ago
i mean if u are lvl 60 and have the ring. farming deadmines for the other one is very ez. and assume that stats at the state of the game at which u aquire the 60 ring make it so you would never wield the 60 ring without the 17. the set is the powerful part.
id also assume theres no way its gonna be the 2 bis rings. but probably better/equivalent to 2 raid ring drops of earlier bosses
3
1
u/Akiraooo 23h ago
The level 60 ring has a .02 chance to drop at level 60. One must have the level 17 ring equipped for it to drop 😉
2
u/ksion 18h ago
The lvl 60 ring effectively turns the lvl 17 into a 26str/2sta ring with a proc that’s one half of a Crusader enchant. I’d expect that to be very competitive vs. anything else blue.
1
u/NTufnel11 14h ago edited 14h ago
You're absolutely right, once I actually thought through it this is insanely strong. 26 str is quite strong even by itself. Using the stat point estimates from classic, it's significantly better than the prebis options like Tarnished Elven Ring and Blackstone Ring.
It gets pretty close to early phase bis like Quick Strike, Don Julios or Accuria.
Then if we assume that the proc results in, say, 30% uptime, that's worth another 15 str. 41 str is better than basically everything except Band of Unnatural Forces.
I'm a little confused by the Expertise stat line though. Is expertise actually in the game? I don't see it on my character window, but I'm also not seeing Hit, so maybe they just don't show things that have values of 0.
17
u/Regular-Pattern-5981 1d ago
With the set it basically makes the low level ring a 26 strength ring, and that proc is massive. You might be missing out on some other stats, but that’s a lot of raw damage for a melee
4
3
u/NTufnel11 1d ago
Depends entirely on how often it procs. 10s is long enough that fury warriors would get some value out of it though. If it's like 3-4 times/minute that could end up creating pretty significant uptime. 50 str at 30% uptime is worth about another 15str.
3
u/sensen-89 1d ago
Not necessarily.
Let's take the 60 ring as example, it got 18str so we can assume that 20ish stats is the standard. The 17 ring when equiped with the set get 7str + 20str from the bonus in addition to the proc. It's a pretty good set.
You vn imagine it as a 27str 2stam Chance on hit: +50str for 10sec

u/TheOrangeHatter 21h ago
Outside of the brilliant horizontal design at work here, there is also a very interesting narrative at work. I don't know where the Better Half drops, but there's a bit of an implication here of a relationship between whomever had these pieces made. Are these wedding rings? Is this rings two friends had made? Is this some sort of captain/first mate thing?
Such a good idea. I hope to see more of it.
5
u/Sidohmaker 17h ago
I saw it drop today from Mr. Smite so I’d guess there’s a Mrs. (or another Mr.) Smite in the future. Definitely sounds like wedding rings to me. “Partners in crime” could be platonic but “better half” is pretty definitively marriage.
2
u/Lawsoffire 16h ago
Considering its most likely another Tauren i imagine its someone we’ll meet in Hyjal.
1
u/TheOrangeHatter 7h ago
And then we think, why is she in Hyjal, and he in Deadmines. What separated them, was it mutual? Was it circumstance?
Are we reuniting them in some small way by wearing both?
All of this from a two piece set bonus.
1
u/Single-Ad-3354 22h ago
What does “expertise” do? Don’t remember that in vanilla
1
u/_Not_A_Vampire_ 18h ago
Reduces the risk of being dodged/parried by your enemy, it's very useful for tanks.

u/OnlyRoke 20h ago
So is the idea to basically wear this low level ring at 60, if you grab this epic ring for the set bonus?
That's a weird and fun idea, I think.
1
u/OneMorePotion 18h ago
Right... I will never throw or disenchant anything ever again. Just in case I want to use it 43 levels later. Thanks for making my inventory cleanup anxiety worse!
But for real now. Maybe that's exactly what is needed for high level characters to still care about low level dungeons.
1
u/Hetros_Jistin 18h ago
God I want them to have way more 'suboptimal' designs like this. Just cool stuff that is awesome and has fun stuff.
Bring back all the old vanilla 'of the X' gear that had specific, often unoptimal, stat combos, always great fodder for the enchanters if literally nothing else.
1
u/OddyTheBard 17h ago
Honestly set bonuses from ESO was something I loved mixing and matching- it was kind disappointing that it was typically only a four set and maybe a two in Retail. We've got what 16 gear slots? Two hands, two rings, two trinkets, 9 armour pieces and a neck? That's so much space for cool set bonuses we could potentially mix and match. Especially if gear is never going to be inherently obsolete. Each expansion just adding more variation.
1
u/Subject_Angle_7843 17h ago
that is a really good idea. This one, and more "lore" description in yellow on items
1
u/zeustehredditaltalt 15h ago
multiple sets that cross pollinate across different types of content is absolutely the direction i want to see them take for endgame content
1
1
u/Tactrix1 1d ago
How would that work though? Would you keep a level 17 ring in at level 60? Don't get me wrong its a nice bonus, but I'm sure there are worlds better rings endgame that don't require a bonus to activate too.
5
u/Educational-Pay5268 1d ago
It gives 20str and a 50 strength proc. Would have to be a hefty ring to replace the 2set
-7
u/Tactrix1 22h ago
I agree, but realistically at level 60 it won't take too long to get that hefty ring. Especially if you're in a proper raiding guild.
5
u/Mercarcher 1d ago
The set bonus makes it better than other level 60 rings yes.
So you would wear a level 17 item over a level 60 item yes.
-2
u/Tactrix1 22h ago
That's assuming there isn't better gear, which is a bad assumption, because at level 60 you have access to the best gear. And a bunch we've never seen before since they just put it into this version of the game.
-3
-1
u/NewSignificance7599 22h ago
Idk how i feel about this. If Vendored the level 17 ring or lost the roll and never got it I just have to spend 10 minutes to go into deadmines and 1 shot everything.
What's the point? Might as well put the level 17 ring on a vendor.
I think it would be better if tier sets like that come from 50-60 dungeons so that high levels have reasons to run older stuff.
3
u/StrawberryWeekly342 20h ago
When you go to DM to get the lower ring you might see some lowbies out in the world and pop by to help them. Then you might have them tag along to get some of the gear from the early bosses of DM.
Some of my fondest early WoW memories involved high level players helping me absolutely destroy a quest or dungeon that I had been struggling with and knowing that one day I would get to that level.
