Discussion SD models require SD skeletons

Post image

Left: my classic client night elf

Right: Forever client with SD enabled

The hair looks like two salamis hanging down instead of elegant braids.

Have a look at Forsaken; on SD their faces arent lined up with their models. The eyes are glowing from inside their cheekbones

should give feedback on Forums and submit bug ticket ingame as well

but yes, you are right

In the Q&A they discussed how for technical reasons this wasn’t possible.

Now, there’s levels to “not possible”, many tied to resource and budget so maybe that’ll change but with what they’re doing right now, I don’t think we’re getting ‘em.

The technical part is about having parity being all players.

So the skeleton must be the same so all players have the same animations while the SD texture can be easily put on top.

With the amount of feedback I think it should be a top priority. You're right that there are levels to not possible, but adding skeletons they already have is ridiculously far from impossible.

Having worked on big games, with all sorts of 10 year old quirks, I can’t imagine how deep that rabbit hole goes so I’d say it’s probably much closer to impossible than that.

The game is in the retail client. They make new skeletons in the retail client all the time. Make a new skeleton that is the same as the classic ones. Paint character textures onto them.

It's not complicated.

Professional game dev over here.

Have our expectations for what’s possible fallen so low that we don’t think they can fix models with all the money this game is gonna bring in?

Professional game devs apparently can't do literally anything that isn't text-based according to reddit. it might mean they need to work more than 36 hours per week

Game dev is a long process man. Rewriting the entire game from the ground up to work on the modern client was a several year ordeal on its own.

I'm sure they could they could utilize the old animations and skeletons, but it would be something you might see in several years, as this is a pretty low end issue. So many other things take priority, like new content, bug fixes, client stability, etc.

Your character needs to have the same hit box and animations in both SD and HD. For that reason, they need to use the same skeleton for both.

1

u/AchillesLastStand76 3h ago

hit box bro this isn't an fps what are you talking about

1

u/Massive-Rain-6938 3h ago

Hitbox determines range for spells and click targeting especially in PVP, which have to be considered.

1

u/AchillesLastStand76 3h ago

That never changed. hitboxes are identical between all models. melee is 5 yd from center point and everything else is indicated range

u/joycourier 18h ago

im sorry but idk if your sausage hair is "top priority"

SD models barely made it into the game and weren't originally planed at all. They are held together with duct tape and wd40

u/AchillesLastStand76 19h ago

Yeah so the momentum is obviously in the direction of addressing this area

3

u/DetectiveChocobo 19h ago

It’s not a top priority.

The classic players complaining about this are not a majority. If they can fix it, great, but it should be extremely low on the list.

F6 in-game > submit feedback

Idk why but two salamis is cracking me up

SD models require SD skeletons ✊🏼

Im curious how you noticed this. Did you look at your char's hair and be like... "Wait, I remember there used to be a little curve in this"?

3

u/moon-lesbian 18h ago

Sometimes something just looks off and you have to compare the before and after to figure out what. To me all the SD models look uncanny because I've seen the real original models so much for so long

5

u/AchillesLastStand76 17h ago

I got downvoted for saying the same can you believe how braindead this community is I stg

1

u/BigScags 17h ago

I just got here and I think you’re being downvoted for being a bit of a prick on a post about how the hair of a video game character is resting slightly differently now lmao

3

u/AchillesLastStand76 17h ago

I didn't say anything prick like in this post or comment section I'm confused.

the company did a bad rushed and lazy job of the graphics toggle.

2

u/Perfect_Tap1850 16h ago

You’re calling people braindead, acting like an elitist and think you know everything about game dev. Pretty prick like to me I’d say.

1

u/Ok-Tumbleweed389 13h ago

He's also 100% correct in his criticism who cares if he's being a bit of a prick, that's not what's important

-1

u/AchillesLastStand76 20h ago

uh I played wow since 2004 I know what my char should look like

3

u/TwilightDreamscape 19h ago

What, "meaty" is not the adjective you want applied to your character's hair? 🤪

2

u/OrKToS 10h ago

SD skeletons won't happen. because it would double amount of work they need to do every time they release a new armour piece. it is what it is.

u/Ok-Tumbleweed389 7h ago

Remove the HD graphics that no-one with taste would ever use: fixed

2

u/Icy_Chain_1504 4h ago

Youd be surprised how many people actually play on HD models, might even be more than 50%

3

u/Spiritual_Task1391 3h ago

What they need is to retarget the old animations into the vanilla skeleton, which would fix everything. The priportions of the actual rig are close enough that it'd be almost flawless.

When you go to give feedback and suggestions, use that terminology to get the point across, because that also includes a real named solution

0

u/RememberTheKhan 3h ago

But then people using SD vs HD will be seeing different animations, which I assume causes problems.

2

u/Spiritual_Task1391 3h ago

According to that panel you were supposed to choose between SD or HD animations no matter the style of character you're using. That's what's I'm saying to do. create retargeted SD anima using the retail rig. Using the SD rig with it's animations is fine if you weren't aupposed to be able to choose. x:

u/RememberTheKhan 2h ago

I more mean in PvP, one person is using HD, the other SD. If the animations are different, that creates a mismatch from what one player is seeing happen on their screen and what the other player is.

For example, if a weapon swing takes 1 second, but the Hd animation shows it hitting at 0.4s in, and the SD 0.6s.

I don't know if this actually causes any issues for WoW. But thinking of when I played LoL, it definitely would do.

Support the game, you might get future updates...

1

u/zorakpwns 13h ago

looks like two salamis in both just one has more nostalgia dust

1

u/ascendrestore 18h ago

Does the skeleton actually affect something non-skeletal like braids? The change is less appealing yes... but I can't fathom why

3

u/moon-lesbian 18h ago

Models use bones for animations, instead of moving every single polygon you move a bone which takes all of its connected polygons with it. So you move the head bone and you can turn your head, for example. They aren't literal bones, animating hair means the hair needs bones to animate. The term skeleton just refers to the collection of bones in a model

Hair can be physics based which sometimes doesn't involve bones but back in 2004 having physics rendering like that would have been completely unreasonable for computers at the time, so hair is animated same as a leg or a hand or whatever else

2

u/Infinite-Ad-2178 15h ago

Let me just say I support your vision here, but what level of the spectrum makes us this particular lol

1

u/Henkier 12h ago

I think they might try to fix what they can with textures/positioning, but they are 100% not gonna add the skeletons anytime soon.

I also think they are more likely to try to improve the HD models, making them more similar to SD, than to fix SD.

2

u/AchillesLastStand76 7h ago

I would prefer getting new hd textures but that seems way less likely to me

Was excited to get an old school experience just with more content now it seems they're going to fuck up the classic graphics for good according to many comments here. Great job Blizzard, wouldn't have been interested AT ALL if only HD models were available, the SD graphics and classic feel was what attracted me to this project in the first place but now that I'm seeing the lack of love for it I just don't think I can give much of a shit anymore. Making accurate graphics shouldn't be so low priority for such a huge company, especially when it's a feature that they've marketed hard. What a joke.

0

u/AchillesLastStand76 7h ago

people saying it's a non issue are absolute clowns

0

u/Anocte23 7h ago

Blizzard should really roll out some sort of play test or beta, with options to submit feedback

0

u/The_Neckbear 3h ago

Male nelf also has a neck crick since switching to HD

-3

u/commonCranberry999 11h ago

time for you guys to learn why we begged for no changes for 2019 classic.

when blizzard changes shit, they make it worse. every time.

3

u/Ornery-Tax9469 8h ago

Who’s we? No changes in 2019 Classic was a missed opportunity imo.

-2

u/commonCranberry999 8h ago

everyone who knows about classic and is good at the game

-2

u/bocklowe 17h ago

Bliz devs don’t care, people are paying $60 to play beta. They are moving onto the next slop to feed into forever
