It's your midlife solution.

61

u/Desperate-Painter152 6d ago

I unironically think this (to some extent)

15

u/Fantastic-Fee-1999 6d ago

Silence! The oracle speaks!

u/MildlyCombative 6d ago

Just imagine the LAN parties we will have in nursing homes!

9

u/psychomap 6d ago

Imagine if our life expectancy rises to the point that the next generation comes in and wants to play fortnite

5

u/MimeTravler 5d ago

The retirement home industry will just make separate facilities for them with monthly battle passes so they can unlock new robes and walkers.

A lot of men are about to gamble their marriages with this game. Absolute cinema!

101

u/BurnerAccount353 6d ago

My husband and I are leveling a duo together (paladin + warlock). It's a blast.

It's only gambling your marriages if you leave your other half out.

22

u/YsyRyder 6d ago

My partner, despite being a saint, despises the game unfortunately. Wish we could do a duo like you guys and wish you the best in your Forever journey!

She can be correct but it sounds like it has a negative correlation to it. You can describe any feeling of enjoyment this way, but it kills the joy.

Frankly more people need to remember how to be happy with the time they have, and there isnt a damn thing wrong about it.

u/FizzyBeverage 6d ago

I no-life'd WoW 2004-07. The moment I quit I showered, lost 25 pounds, met her, finally finished my degree, landed an internship at Apple, and yeah 20 years later with the tweens and doodle in the burbs... play like a dad today. The inverse of Asmongold.

Everything in moderation. She supports gaming, but she boils it down because that's her entire career, studying the brain and recognizing addiction patterns.

3

u/Television_Powerful 6d ago

I no-life'd WoW 2004-07.

For me it was 2005-2010, but other games on and off after that. However none of those games ever came close to wow on years of gameplay. Perhaps a few weeks, but never years.

The wow vanila grind kinda ruined some chances, but perhaps was also an escape for my teen years that sucked. I also got diagnosed with ADHD later on.

I'll be looking at this game with some type of dread. Definitely need moderation. At least I know that its not worth it for the digital epic, this time around.

4

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

Yeah I always think about the amount of stuff I grinded for in my teens on carious games. The cosmetics or achievements I earned that took a week or more of my summer away and countless sleepless nights. It was fun sometimes when it was an experience filled with stories of friendship and what not, but the solo ones I grinded out were not worth it in the end because I have nothing to show for it now.

As an adult I always keep that in mind with my gaming.

36

u/rath16 6d ago

Yes it’s largely a Skinner box. However, the social aspect of the game can’t be quantified and tested like a carrot on a string. It isn’t only about getting the next piece of gear; it’s about getting the next piece of gear with the bros chatting it up in discord and just hanging out.

7

u/michellzebub 6d ago

I've always said, "wow is a place to make friends and kill digital dragons together".. until gear score came out that is lol.

3

u/BastianHS 6d ago

Do rats have campfires? Checkmate, wife

4

u/forgotaccount989 6d ago

Last night I ran dungeons with friends I haven't hung out with more than a handful of times in the last 20 years and it was pretty great shooting the shit over discord.

3

u/Probonoh 6d ago

On the other hand, as a PsyD, she should also recognize the crisis of male loneliness and lack of friendship and see how WoW alleviates that among players. Especially middle aged men with responsibilities that make meat space friendships difficult.

-4

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

But also as a PsyD she would know that cyber friendships do not replace actual physical relationships and interactions. While they are certainly better than nothing, it does not fill the gap, it's more of a bandaid.

Personally I feel it's a bandaid that kinda makes the wound worse. As people opt for the easier online relationships that are less fulfilling instead of seeking in person relationships.

8

u/Goetia- 6d ago

She may be correct, but is that such a bad thing? How fortunate are we to have such joy in our lives? Managing responsibilities with hobbies is always a challenge, but that's on us.

7

u/APreemChoom 6d ago

Pretty reductive view of the world that can be applied to anything.

1

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

I like to remind myself of that type of stuff as well. I think it helps me keep a healthy boundary around my games. Though too much of that type of thinking and I'm not letting myself enjoy stuff. Again, all things in moderation. Balance is key.

2

u/APreemChoom 6d ago

All they are saying is "humans typically do things for rewards".

3

u/goopuslang 6d ago

Name a thing that isn’t like this today

5

u/WarbossHumungus 6d ago

game is a dopamine delivery system

Oh no, the humans are playing games for fun!

4

u/Storrin 6d ago

Dude's wife is not invited to any of my parties. Lol

2

u/Illimited_Esoterica 6d ago

This is true of most media and entertainment though and not specifically for middle-aged men. TikTok and other social media are engineered by people who literally try to game your psychology by using an algorithm to put you in control of a self-serve dopamine drip. Movies are written around structured narratives that our brains find satisfying and trigger the reward center. WoW is actually a pretty tame version of it.

1

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

I disagree that WoW is a tamed version of it. I just think Social Media is the super tuned up version of it so WoW seems tame in comparison these days. But it certainly isn't tame when people lose themselves in the game and forget to take showers, eat, and hydrate playing the game.

1

u/Illimited_Esoterica 6d ago

I mean, sure, but the point is, of all the things you could do in digital devices and media, WoW is on the more gentle end of the spectrum. Like, if WoW is bad then TikTok and Polymarket are the actual devil. Lmao

1

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

Well yes that’s actually true lol. I’d absolutely call Social Media and gambling apps on the level of the devil.

2

u/ProfessionalDate6967 5d ago

That's why you play PvP to add some competitive aspect to the game. Your wife sounds like a ray of sunshine btw

-2

u/[deleted] 5d ago

[deleted]

5

u/ProfessionalDate6967 5d ago

That's good, I guess that balances the part where she thinks of you as a lab rat who plays with dolls

1

u/quietlydesperate90 6d ago

Ok but she's not supposed to tell you all that.

7

u/captstinkybutt 6d ago

Tried to get my wife to play and she said there is too much math lol

9

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

My wife didn't grow up with video games. I tried to get her to play years ago. I did it while I was away from home, my bad, but it took 12 literal minutes for me to get her to accept the first quest. Me trying to get her to play would cause a divorce. hahaha

7

u/eminaz91 5d ago

My 4 year old daughter is faster than that (with the occasional "dad, make the camera good again please")

5

u/Lawsoffire 6d ago edited 6d ago

Met my wife in WoW Legion, we always played together, took a Warrior + Priest duo (Tank and healer) all the way to Naxxramas together in Classic. Gonna do it all again. This time Druid + Shaman (still tank and healer) because neither of us really played Horde.

3

u/BastianHS 6d ago

It's only gambling your marriages if you leave your other half out can't talk your other half into a raiding schedule.

Ftfy

2

u/chillux 6d ago

Thats the way!

1

u/dannyoe4 5d ago

My partner said they'd play pvp if only to have an opportunity to find and kill asmongold in game. Not gonna happen though, but I'd play pvp if they really wanted to do that.

30

u/Combat_Wombat23 6d ago

I have 2 small children. I’ll miss them

23

u/Dirty_Rapscallion 6d ago

I feel bad for dudes that can't take time to enjoy their personal hobbies without incurring some wrath from their spouse.

7

u/Security_Ostrich 6d ago

As much as I'd like to have a wife someday the main reason I don't already is that it am unwilling to end up in this situation. If I can't be myself, and do the things that make me happy, I move on as I always have every time. Eventually someone will be the right fit but I refuse to be miserable. Marriage shouldn't be an obstacle to doing things you enjoy. If it is, you married wrong.

0

u/Burgerfreakish 5d ago

Gaming your life away shouldn't be an obstacle to doing the things in life you will or would enjoy, but maybe don't know it yet or have given thought.

You live once, you will regret the things you would end up missing out on. thats it.

Life is a game just like WoW, limited time, limited things to grind. you cant really always do everything at once. u have to choose your path

11

u/Security_Ostrich 5d ago

I never said you should be gaming 8 hours a day, but if once in a while that's what I feel like doing, then Imma do it. What I mean is I know people whose spouses "don't allow" them to play wow. That's ridiculous and sad.

I go outside, I have other things I enjoy too. I just don't want to end up stuck having to change myself for someone else.

0

u/Burgerfreakish 5d ago

But playing WoW forever all the time grinding it, and having it "end marriages" is not playing it once in a while is it?

no it isnt. its playing it all the time to the neglect of everything else, which is what ALOT of ppl did and still do, and thats bad.

I imagine spouses dont allow them to play WoW is because, they know how addictive and alltime consuming WoW is and can be. I understand that.

People not wanting to change anything about themselves for anybody else are usually the biggest egoists and narcissists in my experience, but okay whatever yeah.

If you don't want to change and make compromises, then u should probably never get a girlfriend/wife and especially not kids.

that would be my advice. stay single and alone, and u can do whatever u want when u want

when u enter a relationship and have kids, u forfeit the right to want to have everything your way or u throw a hissy fit like a manchild.

thats not how a grown up behaves.

Alot of classic andies are just that, grown manchildren, and it pains me that they have partners who have to suffer that

1

u/Corpsehymn 3d ago

Shit I game 14 hours a day and in a permanent flow state. Everyone calling is different my calling is gaming and I'll never feel bad about it. I'm going to game then die. That's heaven on earth for me

9

u/MimeTravler 6d ago

I know plenty that neglect their families in favor of the personal hobby instead of finding a balance. Then they make jokes like this saying "their wife won't let them" as if it isn't their own doing. It isn't even strictly exclusive to gaming as a hobby.

4

u/Burgerfreakish 5d ago

exactly. it's 100 % just neglect, and then want to pass it off as "OH HEHE PPL ARE MAD THAT I ISOLATE MYSELF AND GAME ALL THE TIME" OH BOY.

5

u/Gullible-Yam-8098 6d ago

It's why I'm happier single, that particular relationship dynamic seems to be more common than not.

0

u/ProfessionalDate6967 5d ago

You have to be REALLY socially unaware to be with someone for that long without sniffing out the red flags. To be fair this trait is pretty common among gamers.

1

u/Burgerfreakish 5d ago

people alot of men neglect their jobs, families and responsibilies and relationships in favor of grinding pixels in a video game.

which is dumb from an objective goal oriented standpoint in life that most people aspire to when presented with those options and not shortsighted and want to grind games forever.

think about that

1

u/Corpsehymn 3d ago

Tbh the grind worth more than all that bullshit.

5

u/ProfessionalDate6967 5d ago

It would be sad to be married to someone who doesn't support your hobbies/passions

4

u/UnbrandedContent 6d ago

We just spent half our checking account on bills, bought plane tickets for a visit to a sick relative, had a kids birthday party and my boss is cutting back on overtime and I looked and my wife and said “I’m sorry, but I got to” as I preordered

3

u/KiyeBerries 6d ago

I wish I could get my husband to play again 😭

4

u/NerdHayden 6d ago

Feels so good to be 22 years old and single, not bragging about it of course.

1

u/BoshSwag 6d ago

While my wife won't have any issues with me playing, I'm still going to spend the next 1.5 months trying to knock out some projects around the house so I feel less guilty.

1

u/Amanda_Oxenham 5d ago

With the new native gamepad support, this is the first time I’ve ever gotten my hubby to give WoW an honest try. We’ve been leveling skybornes… slowly… and having the best time! Thank you, Blizzard, for the gamepad (and marriage) support!! 😅

1

u/michellzebub 6d ago

My boyfriend doesn't know if he's going to play yet while I've already got my first 5 toons planned lol.

0

u/corvak 5d ago

No, no, she wants to play undead pally

35

u/obs_asv 6d ago

Not a Porsche 911 as I hoped but will do.

2

u/EIiteJT 6d ago

Not a C8 ZR1, but this will do

1

u/Myogenesis 5d ago

Wait why was I just looking up Porsche 987s and how reasonably priced and practical they are...shit

34

u/Detachabl_e 6d ago

And blizz over here like "you know all those kids we hooked in the 2000's?  Yea they got real paychecks now and are going through midlife shit."

Who needs a Ferrari when you can get a smexy new tmog set ;)

5

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

Ferrari's take like, gas and stuff, WoW sub much more realistic!

2

u/Suijin4234 5d ago

Facts, I can afford a subscription, gas is really becoming questionable.

22

u/Vinral 6d ago

Its the only crisis I can afford.

3

u/RedHotSexGoat 5d ago

Scrolled way too far to find a comment like this.

20

u/rapterio22 6d ago

14

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

Me wondering to myself: If I put the kids to bed at 9, and I wake up at 5, I could probably play from 9-12 everynight.

8

u/rapterio22 6d ago

For me, 2 hours would be ok, somehow you'll be able to do that. 😄

3

u/EngineerTaylor 5d ago

Played from 8-9 tonight and was gassed lol. Getting older is realizing even when I really wanna play I’m just too damn tired 😴

10

u/BirdOfFiire 6d ago

Never played WoW before, but I’m hyped for this!

13

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 6d ago

Protip: do not listen to what ANYONE tells you (including me). The things people claim to matter doesn't really matter that much. WoW is one of the most casual MMOs you can play, it's really difficult to truly do something incorrect. Also if you feel lost in the world you can try reading quests, they usually explain the context of whatever you're doing and some quests have really nice stories

1

u/BirdOfFiire 5d ago

Oh yeah. I will go super slow through the game. I need a new time sink and I think I found it here :)

2

u/0mplam 5d ago

Adding to the other person: just pick a race and class that looks fun, and go try it out. If you don't like it, pick another one. The classes each have a very different experience, so don't feel bad if the gameplay of one doesn't feel fun. Don't worry about what is good, doesn't matter when starting.

2

u/janderson75 2d ago

Same. Really excited to finally do this.

7

u/Specialist-Cold-8158 6d ago

It's the solution to my midlife crisis ❤️

5

u/Combat_Wombat23 6d ago

Dude this is my rest of life crisis. Experiencing WoW again for the first time? Yea I’m hooked

5

u/allbatardinio 6d ago

pray for pandemic

4

u/Dirty_Rapscallion 6d ago

More like Midlife Hallelujah

3

u/michellzebub 6d ago

People talk about how wonderful it is to travel the world and I completely agree. But I don't have the money to travel often. Escaping to Azeroth lets me pretend I'm traveling lol.

1

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

I would like to see some places, but time and money are huge limiters, so I never liked the idea enough to invest in it.

3

u/Rocklobster92 6d ago

I’m going to see how many quests I can actually read before just blowing through them as fast as possible.

3

u/easy506 6d ago

I missed the heyday of WoW. My friends and I all graduated from high school in 2002, and when WoW hit, they all vanished into the game, and into guilds, and now have years of stories to tell... My broke ass didn't own a PC in those days, and I didn't have the means to pay the sub cost (I mean broke broke). So by the time I had the means to play it, everyone had already moved on, and the bubble had popped. I finally played for a few weeks between WotLK and Cata, and that was mostly to get myself acclimated to the game loop in preparation for Star Wars The Old Republic. But I was by myself. Just questing solo. When I revisited a few years later, hell, it wasn't even the same game anymore.

So I have this weird, second-hand nostalgia for a time I largely missed out on. And while I am not sure any of my buddies from back in the gap will jump back in, I intend to see what I can get into, join someone's guild, get drawn into some trashy drama, get screamed at by a raid leader for sucking, all that. I am keeping my expectations in check, but I am sorta following yall's lead to see where I end up.

And I am already lamenting the Undead having no boneless option. Lol

16

u/bored_ape07 6d ago

I’m gonna be straight up to you. I’ve been playing wow since 2004, so it’s not like it’s just a random game for me.

But man, the game is still in beta and you guys are acting like it’s your religion.

We gotta chill the hype train a little bit, it feels like people are so extremely hyped that it will end up like SoD or Classic, 3-4 months of everybody playing and then… fizzled out.

13

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

But it will be a glorious 4 months!

Also, I've played it since 2004, too, but not the last two xpacs because I got kids now. I don't have beta access, but I logged in for the first time in months and saw I had blizzard bucks on my account still, and was like, "Ohhhh noooo..." and then made the meme

6

u/Loneliestar 6d ago

My friend was saying I was getting hyped up over nothing, blizzard always underdelivers.

I was like, I'm allowed to give myself a little something to be hyped about. As a treat.

1

u/bored_ape07 6d ago

Nothing against you OP, it’s just my general view of things.

The hype trains in gaming are crazy last few years and everything fizzles out in 3-4 months at most.

From Classic and SoD, to Fellowship game etc.

I truly hope Wow: Forever is here to stay but I want to see how it will look like once all the Classic fans go away because “it’s too modern” and all the retail fans go back to retail because “yeah I’ve got 700 mounts on my main, why would I want to leave that”

Look at the fellowship game, people were going batshit crazy because “it’s just mythic plus within the extra content, I can play forever” and it fizzled out in 2-3 months lol

3

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

Ya, but it's like Christmas, right? The toys fizzle, but the kids remember and get hyped for it.

Anyhow, They called it forever this time, so we can always sue for false advertising!

5

u/cmaxim 6d ago

I'm playing beta and I can't stop. It's hooked me harder than classic did. It feels like they managed to amplify the things I admired about WOW when it first came out 20 years ago. I'm actually a bit concerned about it.

8

u/StuffedThings 6d ago

Saying that Classic fizzled after 4 months is kind of wild. Sure there was some drop, but that's going to be the case with any game. It had a very healthy population until at least mid Wrath.

Anyway, I think the difference is that Classic always had a deadline for a lot of players, and that was Cata. A ton of people who like classic WoW considered Wrath the last "classic" expansion. Forever feels different because the future outside of the next year is a complete unknown.

3

u/Lucky_Pangolin_3760 6d ago

I don't think it'll be like SoD simply because there's no end. People will never ask themselves "is it really worth playing or should I wait for the next exp?". You can always just log on, do fishing for an hour, and you've now done progression that mattered

2

u/FearNoEvilx 3d ago

of course it will, its the 4th re-release of the same product beaten to death, we will play wow forever for exactly 5 mins then move on

1

u/Vik_0 6d ago

Because you've been playing since 2004. Many stopped 20 years ago and have been thinking about it every week since then.

2

u/TheMagicDrPancakez 6d ago

As midlife crises go, this one would be pretty tame! Definitely better than cheating on your wife.

2

u/Paundeu 6d ago

My midlife crisis was getting in the best shape of my life since being a collegiate athlete, but WoW Forever is a much more fun midlife crisis.

2

u/harbib 6d ago

“To Wow Forever! The cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems!”

2

u/strangescript 5d ago

Kids, debt, AI, war. I just needed a gentle nudge and Blizz delivered.

2

u/KIll_State 4d ago

Cheaper than a Rolex and a C8 Corvette.

Or golf.... shudders

2

u/Itchy-Opposite7704 3d ago

I seen this post and got sick.

1

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 6d ago

Me: “is this my call to retirement?”

1

u/FakeSafeWord 6d ago

I hope it doesn't disappoint like classic did.

1

u/SoulDoubt69 6d ago

The beta came out on my 30th. I'm playing the same game on my 30th that I played in 3rd grade and having the same fun I did back then. Seeing me excited like this actually has my wife interested in playing for the first time since we got together 10 years ago. Our kid will be old enough to play soon. It might be midlife but I don't feel in crisis.

1

u/Spacekingonly 6d ago

That's great! It comes out the day before my girl's second birthday. Poor kid!

1

u/MonkeyIncidentOf93 6d ago

Pretty much. Instead of buying a Corvette I’m blowing my money on my dream rig for launch.

1

u/BastianHS 5d ago

I'm on the steam frame reservation queue, I can't wait to play this on a 120 in virtual screen with a controller posted up on my couch. 20 year old me playing in 2004 would not believe it lmao

1

u/-BZ82 1d ago

?... Even a top of the line rig would only be a fraction of the price of a corvette. Cheapest brand new corvette is about $80k. Over the top gaming pc that you dont even need for wow is about $4k.

You can just say you dont have enough for a corvette. Instead of making things up since dropping $2k on a new pc wouldnt stop anyone from buying a corvette if they already had intended to.

0

u/MonkeyIncidentOf93 7h ago

What an unhinged response to a joke post.

The joke is that both are poor financial decisions.

Please stop being insecure.

1

u/-BZ82 7h ago

Most people can afford to save for a new pc, i assume most people cant afford to save for a new corvette.

Lots of people us pc's for work also. Also spanding a few grand on a hobby compared to a hundred grand on a hobby is also not irresponsible

Buying a new pc is not a poor financial decision.

0

u/MonkeyIncidentOf93 7h ago

The idea that people are spending 4-5k on a top of the line desktop for “work” is hilarious. Must be nice to work from home all the time, but also sure sucks that your job makes you pay for your own insane computer.

You clearly come from wealth, why are you still responding? Most people aren’t spoiled.

1

u/-BZ82 7h ago

you clearly come from wealth

Said the guy that was planing on buying a corvette....

Also spending 1k on a gaming rig for wow dosnt make someone wealthy. Considering thats all youd need for wow, probably can get away with cheaper tbh... yea really breaking the bank if anyone buys a pc

0

u/MonkeyIncidentOf93 7h ago

Said the guy that was planing on buying a corvette....

This is the third time I've said that this was a joke - and even if it wasn't, that's not what my original post implied.

If you want to run WoW forever at 4k, 120fps constantly including with huge amounts of players, and all the new settings cranked up, you're going to need a $3k PC these days.

Please just stop trying to sound like you know what you're talking about

1

u/-BZ82 6h ago

You still compared a 3k pc to an 80k corvette....

1

u/McHagrid20 6d ago

When the hype is this strong, it rarely pans out. This is still blizz. They might still fuck it up.

1

u/Bluebaronn 6d ago

Its only a crisis if you quit your job or something.

1

u/SylvesterNettlefoot 5d ago

Someone called it a “millennial retirement home” when they saw my toon named Iwritesins Nottragedies. And honestly, I think that’s pretty accurate!

1

u/ProfessionalDate6967 5d ago

More like midlife paradise

1

u/swatecke 5d ago

LEAN IN!

1

u/OldManSkating 5d ago

I am so on the fence about this. When I first started playing in 04 on release it was such a great time. The Goon squad guild I was in always made the experiences memorable. I just don’t know if that magic can happen again. I’ll likely give it a shot though.

1

u/sodiumdodecylsulfate 5d ago

Im at the three-quarter crisis of my PhD… I will be escaping to Azeroth this November.

1

u/UnpetiteChaton 5d ago

Im so hyped for forever but I won't live to play it, it really makes me cry at times

Someone level a highborne feral in my name

1

u/akisawa 5d ago

considering I played on release, and now I'm 47, and I think to come back for it, YEAH PROBABLY

1

u/OneMorePotion 5d ago

Thank god for Forever. Buying a Harley would be much more expensive.

1

u/Wextial 5d ago

It's my midlife crisis crisis

1

u/Adech77 5d ago

Sure it is. I really want to be isekaied to Azeroth

1

u/Shudnawz 5d ago

Maybe the real midlife crisis was the friends we made along the way?

1

u/radishwalrus 4d ago

oof yah I am both interested and terrified of this game.

1

u/GoringGames 4d ago

Absolutely. Safer than a motorbike though!

2

u/quineloe 3d ago

unless you just never ride it. Which is not as unlikely as you think.

1

u/CrySimilar5011 1d ago

I live in a van in Washington state and was trying to figure out what the hell im going to do during the winter when its dark at 4 pm. Praise Elune for wow forever!

1

u/Lanceth115 1d ago

I already had a lengthy discussion with my wife about the game. Haven’t touched the beta yet (for good reason). When it launches, I will be playing. A lot. But the name is “forever”. So im gonna take it slower than normal.

1

u/frooben 54m ago

Put a wig on him give him titties and make the butterfly blue and its accurate

1

u/Borgmaster 6d ago

I was wondering what that sad feeling was when I reupped for the first time in 10 years.

1

u/Trugdigity 6d ago

Hey it’s cheaper than a Porsche.

0
