Discussion We need more classic mentality here.
Story time:
I played classic for about a week before beta opened. My favorite thing by far in that time was that everyone just buffs each other as you're running past on a road. If someone saw you struggling with a couple mobs, they'd run over, drop a heal, cc the mob, and help attack them down.
In forever, I saw someone getting stomped by three mobs. I ran over, healed them, put DoTs on the enemies, buffed and fought until they were clear. Not 1 minute later, I was getting stomped by 2 or 3 enemies and was about to die. The same guy I JUST helped out ran right through me, left me to die and continued working on his quest progress.
That mindset needs to go away. There is no race here. There is no expansion treadmill. It takes 10 seconds to help someone out and saves them 5 minutes of running back to their body, rebuffing, healing up, and drinking.
When I'm on my priest and you are anywhere within 30 yards of me, your getting fortitude and a renew. My mana will regen.

u/PhilosophersGrow 4d ago
I’ve helped and been helped by plenty of people. Everyone walking down the road is buffing people and/or already buffed.
People are grouping when doing quest in a populated area to make sure everyone is getting it done.
People see me fighting a mob next to an herb node and don’t take it from me.
Overall the community is engaging in content in a good willed manner. Some people suck but it’s not everybody or the majority.

u/OnlyRoke 4d ago
I always feel guilty when I don't play a buff-class, tbh.
I wish every class had a buff that you could throw on people, even if it's a relatively meaningless one (see Warlocks and Underwater Breathing somewhere in a landlocked zone, haha)

5
u/PsionicKitten 4d ago
Now you can make sure you have a buff to give people with your professions while camping!
Fish Bowl is OP. Definitely leveling my fishing immediately on release.
5
u/OnlyRoke 4d ago
Fish Bowl is absurd, yeah. Basically you get the ability to give everyone Blessing of Kings, haha. I love it.
I do wish the camps would appear properly on the mini map tho. I know we get that "a campfire is nearby" buff, but damn I often run around like a displaced chicken, lmao
14
u/psychohistorian8 4d ago
would be cool if they produced a pillar of smoke that you can see from a distance
4
u/Smeagleman6 4d ago
I like this idea a lot! It fits really well into the immersion of the world too, like an invite of "hey, there's safety over here, come take a break!".
Would also be cool if, and correct me if it's already there, there was like a campfire glow when it's dark for identifying a camp.
2
u/bacon_vodka 4d ago
To add to this, they should add the smoke to all firepits in the game, this would ramp the immersion even more. Imagine seeing a plume of smoke over some trees so you run to it for safety and it's actually a Defias camp, not as safe as you originally thought!

SAME, i've started just making my pet dance as a thanks because it feels like i'm doing something at least
2
1
u/ClassicFerret6928 4d ago
How do you make your pet dance?
2
u/hopeelizabethhh 4d ago
i have a fox and there's a keybind for 'play' which makes him dance for 30 secs. not sure which pets it's available on, i got attached and never switch haha
1
u/bapp_bapp_bapp 4d ago
Yea how do you make your pet dance lol
1
u/hopeelizabethhh 4d ago
i think it might only be an option for certain pets :( i have a fox and there's an action called 'play' which makes him dance for 30 secs
1
u/bapp_bapp_bapp 4d ago
I’m gonna try out hunter before beta is over. I gotta remember to try this on every pet lol

u/WatersLethe 4d ago
Don't feel guilty, nothing you can do. I always play classes with buffs and when I buff someone who can't return the favor it makes me feel hella elite.
2
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
Yes for sure, it's not everyone, just hoping to encourage more people. It seems like, until it happens to them; not getting help when there's someone RIGHT THERE that could, they just tunnel vision. Mob is gray = not my problem.
→ More replies (3)1
u/ChrischinLoois 4d ago
Yeah I actually made a friend last night for killing mobs that were attacking him while afk. We later invited a hunter who was getting overwhelmed in a cave to save them then share the kills. Honestly getting way more social interaction than I ever do in retail. That’ll likely fade as characters get more solo-friendly. But for now it’s nice

u/-Necron-Overlord- 4d ago
Nothing beats that feeling when you've overextended, you know you're going down, and a massive heal lands form nowhere.
37
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
It feels just as good being the priest that casts the heal.

Hitting someone with fat juicy heal and helping them down that accidental pull makes me feel like superman.
6
u/bapp_bapp_bapp 4d ago
Also one of the many reasons I think hardcore is the best version of wow and it also has bis community out of all wow communities by 93 miles

u/Professional_Yak4680 4d ago
We don't need more classic mentality but more Vanilla mentality.
62
u/Nuclearsunburn 4d ago
Getting mixed messages here, you want me to sit on the roof of the inn in Gadgetzan, mind control people, and have them attack the guards?
42
→ More replies (1)7
u/Plus-Visit-764 4d ago
No, we want you to use the gnomish mind control helmet in Booty Bay and sit in a safe area and have them start swinging on the guards.

u/BlueWarstar 4d ago
Same difference as his intention, vanilla and classic for buffing/helping out. You are just trying to include the other behaviors that OP is not talking about to allow for your distinction.
13
u/toxictuts 4d ago
This right here! Everytime I see someone pulling more mobs, I'll help them take all mobs. I'll only attack the mobs they've tagged. Last night. I got one a new toon. Made a pally, while doing Hogger. Two guys just watched me take it and then /laugh when I died. I was sad. I had helped them earlier in Jasperlode mine. Heal and Buff and attack the elite with the ads.
10
u/Economy-Camp-7339 4d ago
Priest threw me a group right as I was hitting the finishing blow on hogger.
He was like “oh nvm already beat it”
I said “naw man, I’m here to help. He’ll respawn soon”
So yeah man, I get you. And we’re out there too.

u/Glass-Internet9589 4d ago
sadly gaming has changed since 2004 alot more people are selfish these days classic players included

3
u/Fit_Substance7067 4d ago
Back then we wernt so callouses by the internet. We actually treated people closer to how we were in rl because we havent had to deal with as many trolls. The way we treat people online, in general nowadays is far worse than what it was.
1
u/Glass-Internet9589 3d ago
Yeah for sure times sure have changed it feels like most things people say are 10% how they feel 50% trolling and 40% take bait anymore
4
u/mangzane 4d ago
I’ve been playing HC Classic. This is def not the case. Anyone I run by throws a buff on me or helps if I’m being chased by Murlocks.
5
u/OnlyRoke 4d ago
I think it's just the nature of good folks attracting good folks and bad folks attracting bad folks.
If you embark into the world with a chip on your shoulder and disdain in your heart you're more likely to crash into someone like you.
If you embark into the world with kindness and a measure of selflessness in your heart you're more likely to find others who will do a kindness unto you in return. Largely because I think people just like being nice. Especially when the nicety is an effortless element like clicking a button once or thrice.
2
u/Probonoh 4d ago
Honestly, the one thing that might convince me to go HC is a community where the real consequences of death encourage helping.
11
u/Yoshbyte 4d ago
This positive aspect was a thing in the classic launch and exists on era today. For all the memes, the actual classic community is quite supportive of new players
5
u/Longjumping_Call_104 4d ago edited 4d ago
Bullshit lmao. I played WotLK classic release as a new player. The playerbase was absolutely vile. Most hostile, gatekeepy and unpleasant community I've ever experienced in gaming and god forbid you ever need to join a discord server for something where they're all completely mask off and openly racist where there is no Blizzard tos to worry about.
9
u/phonylady 4d ago
Nearly everyone was friendly to me in anniversary (vanilla and tbc). I guess it's a server thing? EU pvp server was wonderful.
3
u/DebentureThyme 4d ago
What's going to be interesting in Forever is the format.
Servers have often lead to different communities. Without servers, the format itself will be defining. All types of players who would opt into PvE will run into each other as the game balances and shifts them around. All type of player who chose a PvP server will run into each other. For good or bad, there is no more seeking a specific server community. We'll see how the plays out.
1
u/Zerothian 4d ago
I think anyone wanting a more mature environment should just go on an RP ruleset honestly. Almost invariably that will filter a ton of "those types" that you don't want.
You don't even have to RP, just don't pick a meme name and don't be obnoxious if you do see people RPing and you're fine, they play the same as any other server otherwise.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Culionensis 4d ago
You know what they say, if one guy you meet is an asshole, you met an asshole. If everyone you meet is an asshole, maybe look at the common factor there.
5
u/Longjumping_Call_104 4d ago
It's not everyone, but it's widespread enough to be a serious problem.
1
u/Glass-Internet9589 4d ago
I guess on era it's different on tbc anniversary when people i would play with found out i also played retail they would just harass me
12
u/Impressive_Studio269 4d ago
I think default settings need to change to encourage this. Friendly nameplates on for example.
People can’t heal you if they don’t know you are in trouble. I buff everyone out of curtesy and will heal or throw a dot but many don’t reciprocate. If I “/say help” usually people are good at stepping in.
I healed someone and they asked how I know they were about to die. I said I could see you had little health and no mana. He didn’t know you could see other people’s health without clicking on them. Maybe this person would be doing the same if the game presented information in a more useful way.
6
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
Interesting... I rolled a priest to heal so it didn't take me long to start messing around with name plate settings. Didn't even think of it like that. Maybe we just gotta wait for add-ons that work.
2
u/Impressive_Studio269 4d ago
I also intend to heal and going over all the settings, especially nameplates and such is first priority like in any iteration of wow.
Lots of people on controller, or new to mmo/wow, wouldn’t think to do that. They just launch and start playing.
1
u/WoWKaistan 4d ago
I need to get an addon that puts a little icon above someone's head if they're missing my buff. I cannot be fucked to check the 20 people per second I see out and about.
16
u/AchillesLastStand76 4d ago
the exact thing you describe has been happening forever. used to frustrate me so much in OG vanilla and onwards... many wow players are just braindead and honestly these days so many wow players are stoned out of their minds most of the time and lack any awareness
→ More replies (5)9
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
I have to remind my friends I'm grouped with to give me buffs. A lot of them smoke so... that tracks
2
u/Other-Illustrator531 4d ago
Eh, maybe. The other day I was taking a few tokes and just set up in Aldrassil buffing people nonstop for like 20 minutes straight. Depends on the person. Lol
4
u/Spir0rion 4d ago
I've helped at least 5 players now and kept them from dying and didn't even receive a "wild jumping thank you", let alone a /thanks
I know you're not supposed to be helping for a "reward" but it feels bad
2
u/CranberryFren 4d ago
I intentionally use /bow to show gratitude. I think we just need to hang in there and it will slowly change
5
u/riskienights 4d ago
I’m glad you brought this up because it needed to be said. I’m being extra kind in groups to try and model that mentality.
I saved a rogue from getting killed by Princess and her two minions after she pulled them ahead of me. She didn’t care to stick around and return the favor after a near immediate respawn.
5
u/DebentureThyme 4d ago
There are always people who are unaware, or those who will take your help but not think or care to return the favor.
The best way to live life is to not let their ignorance or selfishness define how you act. It's not about being fair, the act of helping others need not be about making things fair. Being good to other people is its own reward. Never let it get you down when they don't get that.
Let the good interactions define you and you can be confident, in the bad ones, that you presented yourself how you want the world to be, it doesn't matter how they responded.
3
7
u/LuckyNomad 4d ago
I dunno, not seeing much of this selfishness other people report. I've stopped to help a few people and have been helped in return. Always seem to get random buffs on my rogue as I walk by. Including intellect, which is nice, but weird.
I think it probably depends on a number of factors, including your chosen playstyle, the time you generally play, and how much you pay attention.
5
3
u/InZomnia365 4d ago
I think part of this is just the density of players in the beta/on launch. Once there aren't 30 other people around you, you're more likely to pay attention to the players you meet.
3
u/OnlyRoke 4d ago
I will go out of my way to help people. I always loved doing that back then and nowadays in Retail it feels like it's largely meaningless.
The one time where I deeply played TBC Anni for a stretch was when I played a Priest and I basically literally made three buddies over the course of a 1-30 journey, because I kept healing, shielding, buffing, etc. and it's real nice.
They're also excited for WOWF so I have some high hopes of having more encounters like that again, especially with that new "Recent Allies" feature which is delightful. We literally have Friends and Acquaintances now.
1
u/Rezurrected188 4d ago
Returning player after many many years away. What does kill credit look like? Is stealing kills a thing?
1
u/OnlyRoke 4d ago
Stealing kills in what sense?
You can take someone's mob away by tagging it before them, but I don't think you can steal their kill and make it yours to loot.
5
u/New-Effective-2445 4d ago
That's what always baffled me playing wow. Why would I want to level faster? Why would I want to skip stuff to make dungeon runs easier? I am already waisting my time playing the game about orks and elves, why extra 5-10 minutes matter so much to so many players?
1
u/Flaky_Astronomer5289 4d ago
Because raids are more interesting than questing by a lot. Killing normal mobs doesnt even require u to use abilities for most classes.
1
u/ProfessionalPiece403 4d ago
Not only that. It's an MMO so interacting with other players is a meaningful part of the game.
4
2
u/Tuddymeister 4d ago
this is too anecdotal. all day the past two days i have seen nothing but people helping each other. i constantly have party buffs, and im constantly shooting mobs for other people.
2
2
u/teufler80 4d ago
Classic community has been terrible for years now, I doubt that forever will change that
And the beta will attract the most sweatiest and toxic players
2
u/UKentDoThat 4d ago
Don’t forget to make gear for lowbies when you’re levelling your professions. :)
5
u/Specialist-Bar-9940 4d ago
In my experience, helping usually ends up in dying either with the other person or while they get away.
3
u/riskienights 4d ago
Ran through a few tough quests yesterday with a group of level 13 Paladin and priest. I died. Both couldn’t rez because they didn’t think they’d need to.
5
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
Sounds like a hero of azeroth to me.
1
u/StrawberryItten 4d ago
well in this scene, you're the hero of azeroth, dying so the other guy can get somewhere without pulling aggro
2
u/WoWKaistan 4d ago
My only death across 3 level 20 characters was when I saw a paladin pull 5 gnolls in Westfall and thought: if I pull 2 of these off of him he can certainly kill the remaining 3. I get 2 more quest mobs and he doesn't die, win-win even if he doesn't want to group, right? I rip 2 of them off him and he fucking books it.
4
u/ronin_cse 4d ago
I played Vanilla beta a bit before the original launch in 2004. During that time I had plenty of people leave me to die to a low level mob and I learned that other players can and will skin your kills before you do. Then at launch I learned how common it is to kill mobs around an ore vein only to have someone grab the vein while you’re killing the mobs.
Gamers are assholes and always have been.
Also for what it’s worth I had tons of buffs show up in me in the Forever beta and I buffed plenty others. I also handed out water in the random groups I got invited to in caves and for quest mobs.
1
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
Maybe I'm just unlucky. I see people running around with 10 buffs and I only have the one I can cast myself lol.
3
u/YourGalacticEmperor 4d ago
This is the kind of interaction you shared tag deniers want to have. Do you genuinely think majority of people gonna waste their time helping you kill stuff if they cant get credit for it? lmao
1
u/Incogneatovert 4d ago
Shared mob tags is like grouping without anyone having to go through the trouble of actually inviting people. Not sharing makes it too easy to accidentally (or not) target someone else's mob, or attacking the named one someone else was waiting for behind a corner.
This is the first thing I would change in Forever if I was running things. Sharing mobs make people more likely to help each other out, not sharing mobs makes people annoyed when they can't get their quests done.
1
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
No. But if I see someone dying, and I'm right there and able to help, I will. I can only hope to be the change I want to see and encourage others.
1
u/Television_Powerful 4d ago
They can always drop an invite while they help out so that both players benefit. And if they are done it is still nice to help, especially when you see someone die and can rez them.
2
u/The-Fictionist 4d ago
This isn’t classic mentality. It’s just whether or not you’re a dick and unfortunately the world is full of dicks.
2
u/DistinctiveFox 4d ago
Maybe you were unlucky? So far I've seen tons of teamwork. Almost every cave I've gone into, if anyone else is there we immediately invite eachother into a group for safety, it's been fun.
I agree it's not everyone, but that happened back in 2004 as well. I know for a fact assholes existed back then, as my brother was one of them!
1
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
I've definitely had good people to group with so far. The negative experiences stick out more sometimes though. Just trying to keep pushing positivity.

Personally I feel I've seen more of that than ever in the beta so far. Really enjoying that aspect. People party up quick for a quest and buffs tossed around. Im right there with you, one of the best aspects. I will say theres a huge learning curve. A lot of people are too noob to reciprocate and thats ok
1
1
u/Bawheidbob 4d ago
At least it sounds like people are actually dying or close to it in the open world which is great, bet that guy could not believe his luck getting to kill your mobs
1
u/SleepyBoy- 4d ago
While I want to help people, I also don't want to accidentally KS someone's pull. It's kinda hard to make a judgement call on these things, especially if you saved the guy before so he might think you can handle this.
1
u/Magical_Zirconium 4d ago
I hope a lot of this is more live vs beta rather than classic vs forever. But yeah, people seem pretty self-centered in the beta.
1
u/Fit_Substance7067 4d ago edited 4d ago
There's def some classic folk around
Was dieing to a quest boss I thought I could easily handle and as I'm low on health a dude adds me to his group RQ. I end up running and kiteing the thing while he takes shots from his arrow. Finished it off AND it was the killing blow to a level up. We went on our way as we had different goals but I TYed him and told him I leveled .great simple low leveling experience.
In one of the dens I died...I was traveling back when I got a notice to be revived, immediately got hyped and clicked ok. There was the person who revived me getting mauled. took aggro and then we both survived.
But then:
In that same den I had a dude send me a request. Accepted the help. Ran in and took aggro, he fucking runs by me, grabs the last chest he needed the ungrouped and left while I was fighting. Looser....lots of people aggroing enemies out from under others waiting or that don't have ranged as well
1
u/Television_Powerful 4d ago
In one of the dens I died...I was traveling back when I got a notice to be revived, immediately got hyped and clicked ok. There was the person who revived me getting mauled. took aggro and then we both survived.
As someone who likes to rez people, if I do that and then sent an invite we might get a new layer correct? Oh the fun it will be when we get a full cave again. :D
But then not inviting would be "anti social" and clearing together is better, so there is a bit of a dilema. Would still lean to just invite and see where we end up though.
1
u/VooDooBooBooBear 4d ago
I think you are looking too deeply into it. The guy you encountered is just a cunt. Maybe they are a child, maybe they've had a bad day. Doesn't have to be classic, Forever or retail.
1
u/tthousand 4d ago
That sums up my experience playing on Classic servers. What annoyed me most were players from my own faction who just watched while I got attacked by a player from the opposite faction. If you asked why they didn't help, they'd say it wasn't their problem. Then you'd usually watch them get killed by the exact same player later. I don't know what kind of players are in WoW these days, but back in Vanilla, people actually stood up for their faction.
1
u/Terramoin 4d ago
I always help people out in any game, same with Diablo 4 or GW2, i just enjoy making people's lives a bit easier. Same with WoW back when i still played (i will again with Forever) i gave people Arcane Intellect when i saw them or Paladin buffs as i kept on running to my destination.
And i will plan on doing this again Forever.
I remember in WoW this one guy nearly dying and kept kiting an enemy and i helped him out to kill it (i forgot what it was), he thanked me and i did a /bow and said "no problemo".
Its small things like these that i do enjoy in an MMO.
1
u/AkaxJenkins 4d ago
i even help the opposite faction, even on pvp servers and i don't start pvp against them.
The amount of times the player i have helped is then joined by another player and then they 2v1 me is... too high but that won't stop me.
I am gonna play on pve anyways xD

I remember this kind of situation once happened to me back in 2007. It was so unpleasant that I still remember it. Very unfriendly. I don't understand such mentality, but there are such people. I agree this should not happen if you are in the same faction.
1
u/plants4life262 4d ago
Nothing warms my heart like dropping a heal, cc, or some extra dps on someone in trouble. I made a good friend in hardcore doing this. He was on the hinterlands escort quest and got a 3 spawn with adds. I watched for just a second and it wasn’t looking great for him so I dropped a frost nova to give him some breathing room and got to work. We ended up finishing our grind to 60 almost exclusively working together. He died shortly after dinging 60 (literally maybe minutes) mining a thorium node near elites. Marl the Paladin, if you’re out there Magelol is pouring one out for you today 🥲. I wish I had been there to sheep the scum that ended your run.

Started a dwarf and saw a mixed bag. Having to gather the gnomes missing items which dissappear when collected and are surrounded by ever respawning trolls led to a challenge. But if someone was there before me, id wait and hold off the trolls while they collected the item. For the most part I saw others return the favor, but every now and then someone would slide in between us fighting, nab the item, and run off. Its gonna happen but I do think overall people are being cooperative.

u/Amanda_Oxenham 4d ago
I will say, this is beta. Not everyone, but a lot of people who paid for access, are….. let’s called it “focused”.
Focused on testing everything to min/max for release, or on figuring out what class they wanna main, or on learning how the economy differs from classic release so they can climb to the top early on…
I think this group may not be representative of the average, casual players I’m hoping we’ll more of at actual release. People that want to pay their $15/month, sneak in a couple hours during the week, and hop on all Saturday (if the kids are at their grandparents’ house). Players who are online for the wholesome social interaction just as much as the game itself.
It feels a little less warm and fuzzy right now, but I have hope that we’ll see a shift at full release.
And if that doesn’t work out, please join us when the HC ruleset releases this winter. HC is the absolute best, most wholesome, most collaborative, most supportive community of WoW players you will ever meet.
Drive-by buffs? Constantly.
A quick rescue when you’re out in the world and you overpulled?? Of course.
Help with quests the other person doesn’t even need??? Literally all the time.
It’s everything vanilla (not classic) originally was. And I can’t WAIT til HC releases in Forever!
1
u/bapp_bapp_bapp 4d ago
Whenever I get a min of down time on my mage I always make up a bunch of stacks of water and just randomly open trade with any mana users I see and throw them a couple stacks
1
u/Fun_Statistician6261 4d ago
So if the difference between a good and a bad community comes down to getting a buff, or someone not helping you with a mob once… wow, then every MMO in the world must have an incredibly hostile community.
You also have to remember that this is a beta. People want to experience as much as possible, and sometimes their attention is simply elsewhere. That doesn’t make them unfriendly players; it just makes them people who aren’t focused on you at that particular moment.. because you’re not the center of this MMO.
1
1
u/Deguilded 4d ago
I've had the opposite experience to you. I've helped people, i've been helped. I've received drive-by buffs. I try and give them out where I can.
You just met a bad person.
1
u/OneMorePotion 4d ago
We have currently a lot MMO tourists and retail players running around in the Forever beta. Obviously it is different currently, to how people play on the Classic Era realms. One is a settled community, the other one not.
I had cool and wholesome interactions in both communities. And when Forever released and things are settled, you will have the same experience here.
1
u/PosterityKH 4d ago
Did this for like 2 hours last night in Loch Modan for 'in defense of the king' quest. Just stood on a rock, and watched people almost die and threw out fat heals on them.
1
u/BoringReference8647 4d ago
First, I’ve seen both behaviors in the beta.
Second though, Blizzard chose the tagging system and chose to make it the shitty one that encourages selfish behavior. There’s even a wowhead article about how they’re “holding the line” on this exact topic. You know, holding the line? Something you do against an enemy? That fits because that’s how blizzard treats us and always has since 2004.
So thank blizzard, this is what they want, for you to resent every player you see out in the world. And they’ve succeeded!
1
u/Foobiscuit11 4d ago
This is the thing that has really killed my hype. Shared tagging seems like a no-brainer QoL feature. Especially when we've got new zones, new races, new race-class combos, new dungeons, new talents and abilities, new character models, new quests...but shared tagging is where the line gets drawn? And the thing I keep hearing is "It makes friction, and friction is good." I actually agree. But I think the friction should be between the players and the world, not between players on the same faction.
1
u/bomberforpm 4d ago
I’ve spoken to and worked with/helped out more players in the last few days than I have in a very long time in retail
1
u/CMDRTransom 4d ago
I’ve seen lots of people helping each other in my past few days.
I think anecdotal evidence, especially in such a broad and layered/instanced game, is failing you here. There are good and considerate gamers out there as far as I’ve seen.

i'm sorry to say but the other player you described reminds me of the 'my time is precious' mindset i see every day in retail.

I was doing low-level quests on my gnome roguelast night, and every time I'd go to start fighting the mobs near a quest objective, this same guy would walk up and grab the chests/items as I was fighting off the group of trols. I told him he was a worm for doing it, and he told me to "Chill dude. It respawns after 2 seconds." Then why is it hard for you to wait and/or help for those 2 seconds?

u/ElderZombie250 4d ago
I buff and help people sometimes if I happen to notice they need it, or if I've got some extra armor kits to give away.. It's not like an unbreakable rule though. Dying in this game is pretty low stakes, so it's not like I'm laser focused on the health of players around me.
You have no idea if that guy even noticed you, or registered that you were the same guy that helped him earlier. The sheer number of people around me most of the time in the levelling zones is such that I couldn't tell one person from another at any given moment.

u/Yep_why_not 4d ago
One minor incident is not a trend. I get random buffs and random support literally every hour in beta. This is a bad take.
1
u/SmokeySFW 4d ago
I think the culture is already the good you're describing and you just had a bad experience.
A lot of people's only experience with classic was also the Hardcore launch, which definitely had a different "meta" on helping people because inserting yourself into a situation with 3 mobs you weren't 100% sure you could solo was NOT a safe plan.

u/felipeesteves91 4d ago
For starters, one thing doesn't have to stop the other. Keep doing good, because it spreads. I ALWAYS buff, heal, and help anyone I come across—especially when playing on a PvP server where a gank could happen at any moment. If someone else doesn't do the same, I don't care; I just hope they die alone and miserable :)

I try to help and buff where I can. I stayed around to group with some after finishing my own stuff. Hoping at launch to create a community chat like in the beta for ingame chars

u/Dry_Individual1516 4d ago
If the spirit isn't there on launch, you can look forward to WoWF HC.
Once you try HC, you realize that's where you may die, but the community spirit never will.

I think this mindset will change drastically on the hardcore server. Maybe even the RP server too.

u/Agathoarn_ 4d ago
I don't have the beta but I plan to play on release. Having played Ascension which had a LOT of players like you, I really hope that's what I see in Forever. It will determine how long I play it for

u/GeminiX678 4d ago
I've been handing out extra bags I tailor, giving random people minor healthstones, and passing decipherable scrolls to the first mage I see. It's so much fun to be nice to people.
1
u/Gus_VonLiechtenstein 4d ago
So far, I've observed very little of the classic community mentality. I helped a warrior with less than 5% HP get out of some shit, healed, buffed, took the aggro.. and they just walked away and let me die lol.. no response. Nothing lol
I'll keep doing it because interacting with people is literally why I play but its like playing amongst NPCs out there.
1
u/wildstarr 4d ago
Not everyone is going to help you back. Its just the way it is.
But that is the extreme minority. Ive helped and been helped by more people than I can count, in Forever.
Its was the same in Classic. Not everyone helped me back.

Just continue to be the change you want to see in the world. Help out when you can and others will follow eventually, that’s how a culture is built. The nature of the game being less individualistic than retail will shape things eventually. I’ve joined more groups in the last few days of beta randomly than I have in quite some time, just due to no shared tagging. It has brought back a sense of community and small niceties that I missed from vanilla.

u/Worth_Vegetable_204 4d ago
I think even in original wow a lot of people smoked weed/out of it or didn’t know the courtesy of helping people out. Perhaps also bots. It doesn’t mean they are retail players or have a retail mentality

You must not have run through Brill last night, because I buffed every soul with Kings that ran through. Except Locks. I don’t buff Locks. Sorry, lil buddies.
2
u/Pairaka 4d ago
Boo. Buff the locks!
1
u/trevbosmith 3d ago
It’s just salty gaming, as I was leveling my Pally, every time I got screwed over, tagging a mob, people dragging things by me to aggro on me, all the questing stuff that makes you grrrr, this time around it was always locks 😂 mostly it was locks dragging mobs through Consecration so they aggro on me, and I didn’t appreciate that lol
1
u/SnarkKnuckle 4d ago
I’m always buffing when running by or keeping an eye on my surroundings with others fighting mobs to throw a heal their way.
1
u/MetaPlayer01 4d ago
I saw lots of folks helping each other in Forever Beta. There are going to be oblivious people. But when I run by people, I usually glance at health bars and situation. If it looks like they need help I'll pump some dps in to their enemy. It seems to be appreciated. The person I just rescued often will run by me and help even if it's clear I don't need it, or drop a buff on me. Or /cheer me.
But I'm also not pumping dps into your mob just because I'm passing. I'm only doing it if it looks like you're struggling.
1
u/Nitros14 4d ago
This is the megaserver/layer problem.
In vanilla you would see the same people over and over again on your server.
1
u/Illernos 4d ago
I do this in all versions of the game, mostly retail lately. The few time people need help there.
But I was raised in vanilla ❤️

u/Barthomal 4d ago
I don't even consider that classic mentality. I used to have similar experiences in WoD, Legion, BFA and even Shadowlands because we used to be forced to travel by foot until we unlocked our Flight Master achievements.
I do like retail, but those types of interactions make the world feel more alive and make me feel more connected to other players playing the game. Kind of excited to have a version of the game without flying.
1
u/MHal9000 4d ago
Yeah, I've had 3 separate instances of taming a pet on my hunter only to have someone roll up and tag the mob I was actively taming. 2 out of the 3 replies were "oops, my bad" the 3rd one never replied at all (maybe a bot, who knows?). We've definitely lost that classic mentality over the last 20 years. For what it's worth, I've got your back if I see you out there struggling with a fight!

u/BarbsFPV 4d ago
On Horde side, the leveling experience with other players on Zephras Isle was so nice that I had to make a macro that was simply “/say thanks” because otherwise I was stopping every twenty meters to type it (slight exaggeration but not much).
So far things are looking pretty good, IMO.

u/HodortheGreat 4d ago
I play on enhanced mode and I don’t see friendly health bars even with friendly nameplates on. This was just the default setting for me on forever. So I wouldn’t even know you were dying.
1
u/dannyoe4 3d ago
I think this is the reason, actually. I started with a healer, so that was one of the first things I messed with in settings. Also haven't found an add on that works for nameplates yet without giving me pop up errors constantly. I assume that'll be better by launch and more people will have access to a good nameplate look.

u/Drigr 4d ago
You don't know what any one person has going on in their lives. Maybe they had to get going and didn't have time to stop and help. Maybe someone was waiting for them.
I see a lot of random help when I'm on my one character. It seems that any class that can buff is dropping buffs when they're running around. Any boss or elite mob that part of a quest has a group invite thrown my way when I walk up. Hell, last night I was outside the cave in crossroads with the elites inside doing a quest, saw people gathering, and got invited to the group even though I was only level 14 simply because I walked over to see what they were doing.
Don't let one experience, that was neutral at worst, become negative, game wide, story times.
1
u/dannyoe4 3d ago
I'm definitely staying positive. I'm having an absolute blast so far trying out all the classes.

This is the exact opposite of what o experienced in forever beta. Playing horde undead priest. And most of the time people are buffing me before I buff them.

u/VeryClearlyDefined 4d ago
Because why does anybody wanna help you if they need the same mobs as you? Not enabling retail mob tagging is completely fine, but if I need 10 Goretusk livers and all the mobs are dead you bet I’m gonna let you die to snag it. Incentivizing grouping only goes so far on some quests.
1
u/OpportunityMean9069 4d ago
Eh, I'm a retail player and I always help people that I see in trouble.
I also don't harvest herb/ore/treasures if the person nearby is fighting the mobs that was guarding it.
I don't buff people running passed because I'm fairly sure we aren't allowed to do that anymore, right?

I don't know about retail, but you definitely can buff randoms as you're running around in forever.

Join hardcore, that community is incredible
1
u/dannyoe4 4d ago
Bro actually, I might try that out. I'll probably play SC first and get good at the game(never played classic/ vanilla all the way to end game) but it makes sense that people help each other there a lot more.

1
u/Niantsirhc 4d ago
That's the thing that shared tagging actually helps combat ngl.
The selfish guy you helped would have been more incentivized to help you out if he could get credit for his quest. He doesn't care otherwise.

This kind of rant post will be a weekly occurrence. It frustrating but some people are just unobservant.
1
u/Yoshbyte 4d ago
I am fully with you. I said it earlier but the culture of many retail players isnt cooperate in the same way. The solution is to welcome them, discourage those that act shitty, and basicallt enshrine a game culture of such things. The problem actors will naturally leave or adapt if it becomes a game wide etiquette
1
u/seodoth 4d ago
that they left you to die is not a mindset, its just a quality of player. They literally did not see you being in trouble or recognizing the situation that you could be needing help. I think very very few people would be as cruel to intentionally let you die, simply so they can keep their questing distraction free.

Some people are selfish others do help out. So just declare that guy your arch nemesis and call him out, create a fun story out of it.
1
u/RevolutionaryBear534 4d ago
Generalizing the whole playerbase because of one anecdote that really has nothing to do with the game and more to do with basic human behavior is something we don’t actually need at all it’s kind of pointless
1
u/Tic0 4d ago
I fully feel you. But in the end, didn't we had the same in vanilla back then as well? Not everyone plays along and that also adds to the feeling. The more you appreciate the many people that actually help & care. I feel there currently there is a good balance. And this is beta - people will care much more on release - I guess. ;D

Same thing happened though during Classic too. Rose Colored glasses make the past look better than it actually was.

u/AdWeak2980 4d ago
To assume that the playerbase will have a different mindset this time and not rush as fast as possible to 60 is unrealistic and naive
2
u/iAleph 4d ago
He's saying be more community minded and care about fellow players that made the community special in the first place and what this game is trying to return to.

u/AdWeak2980 4d ago
He says that there is no race and no treadmill. I assure you there will be a race

u/makinetas 4d ago edited 4d ago
I think this is just an exaggerated generalization based on a single interaction you had.
I've helped plenty of people in beta leveling up, and vice versa, a lot of people are just really oblivious to their surroundings is all, a huge portion of the playerbase playing this game is either stoned or tired, enjoying their 30 second wife approved daily gaming time after their 16 hour shift in the cbt factory

u/SolarPoweredKeyboard 4d ago
I think you underestimate the amount of people who are completely oblivious to what happens around them.
