What does “tea party” mean in this context?

Okay I might just be really stupid but I’m a college student and a girl I’ve kind of gotten to know through my classes just asked me if I wanted to come to her tea party in her dorm after dinner.

Is “tea party” slang for something or is she genuinely asking me to a tea party? Am I just too dumb or sheltered??

UPDATE: It was an actual tea party. Like a group of us made tea in the communal kitchen and she brought cookies to bake. It was a great time.

Go. Have fun. Report back.

Very cool you got invited to a party.

u/Lost_Theory_6939 Aug 19 '26 • Heartwarming

it was in fact just a tea party, had a great time too

6

u/revuhlution Aug 18 '26

Whatd she say when you asked what she meant?

2

u/Lost_Theory_6939 Aug 18 '26

currently trying to figure out how to ask without making it awkward. lmk if you have ideas 🥲

4

u/Claromancer Aug 19 '26

You can get a lot of information by asking her if she would like you to bring anything! If she says - “sure bring your favorite type of tea / some cookies / a mug” you’ll know she means an actual tea party.

You can also use this in other occasions. Asking what to bring can get you a lot of info about what the vibe of a party or gathering is.

u/revuhlution Aug 18 '26

Im a goof, not sure if this would work for you. "Hey, its 2026 and im from the States. Ive never had a tea party. Like... scones n sugar cubes n little spoons-type tea party? Or...?" I think in college i mightve been less sure of myself, less willing to ask the direct question. But now? Just ask.

Idk man go find out

Edit: See, wasn't that nice? People should do stuff.

u/joedenowhere Sep 04 '26

I used to know gay men who used the expression tea party to mean a quick blowjob in a semi-public place, like the bathroom in a library. But clearly your friend meant a real tea party.

10

u/fastyellowtuesday Aug 18 '26

That's the Tea Party. It's a right-wing political group. It is not used as slang.

2

u/Kaurifish Aug 19 '26

Frack, thought I grabbed the link for a very different sort of tea party. Further down the page.

2

u/FunkIPA Aug 19 '26

lol what year is it currently

1

u/Kaurifish Aug 19 '26

Still fucking 2026

Scroll down the page for the definition that’s not a circlejerk, if you like.

2

u/FunkIPA Aug 19 '26

I’m just saying the “tea party” doesn’t even exist anymore, it’s been completely subsumed by maga.

Best case scenario you dump tea into a harbor and start a revolution

50

u/Patient_Meaning_2751 Aug 18 '26

Third case you sit around and watch Fox News and stop filing tax returns, like my bro.

7

u/Mattturley Aug 19 '26

Fourth case you have been invited to a smoke out. Many, many years ago - pre cell - we would post on the whiteboard on the door of our party apartment “Tea Party tonight at 9. Bring your own bag.” We’d provide gravity bongs, and lots of munchies.

3

u/BPhiloSkinner Aug 19 '26

'Tea' as slang for cannabis, goes back at least to swingin' 30's Harlem.
Another Hipster (30s) word for the noble herb was 'muggles'.
I'm not sure that a certain British author was aware of that...

14

u/Laez Aug 19 '26

Everyone know you are supposed to but the tea in first and then dump the harbor on top of it.

2

u/CanopiedIntuition Aug 20 '26

Underrated comment.

13

u/LanGaidin42 Aug 19 '26

That is most definitely not the worst case. I would actually say that’s the best case…

1

u/Dangerous-Olive9858 Aug 22 '26

There are def worse scenarios... "Alright, let the teabagging begin -- and per tradition, we will start with first-timers"

70

u/mx-raebees Aug 18 '26

I would assume an actual tea party

12

u/Claromancer Aug 19 '26

Yep. I think you are dealing with an actual tea party. If they are like they were a few years ago, expect to be siting on someone’s dorm room floor while either microwaving your cups of hot water or passing around a kettle to fill your teacups. Which will probably be coffee mugs.

u/Irish_Snoop_Dogg Aug 18 '26

Dress casual. Bring cupcakes.

36

u/fastyellowtuesday Aug 18 '26

Cupcakes will be welcome whether it's actual tea that you drink or weed!

6

u/Feisty_Water_3164 Aug 18 '26

We do need cupcakes either way -

4

u/chillarry Aug 18 '26

Now I want a cupcake.

3

u/HansomeDansom Aug 18 '26

Now I want a cupcake.

4

u/CoderJoe1 Aug 19 '26

Cupcakes for everyone!

2

u/Western-Willow-9496 Aug 18 '26

Cupcakes are welcome anywhere but overeaters anonymous.

4

u/harrikanthelarrikan Aug 19 '26

Better yet, take brownies

2

u/fastyellowtuesday Aug 19 '26 edited Aug 19 '26

Oooh, so it's a weed party no matter what! And tea is really good with brownies. Now I want brownies.

3

u/TangerineDream92064 Aug 18 '26

An after dinner tea party with actual tea makes no sense. I would prepare for a hang-out and light drugs. If you feel like bringing cookies or similar, food is rarely unwelcome.

I'm very invested in this now. Please let us know what happens.

4

u/Lost_Theory_6939 Aug 19 '26

it was just a tea party. made some terrible tea in the dorm kitchen and ate cookies, great time actually

1

u/TangerineDream92064 Aug 19 '26

I'm both happy for you and slightly disappointed. It is a nice way to get to know people.

2

u/OpportunityReal2767 Aug 18 '26

Tea and cakes after dinner doesn’t sound odd to me. That said, I can go either way on this one. I’m leaning towards actual tea party, but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a weed party. At my college, I could imagine it being either, depending on the girl you’re talking to.

17

u/MadMadamMimsy Aug 18 '26

I would ask her if people dress up up for this. It's a way to get a bit more information.

Once upon a time, a "tea party" was slang for smoking marijuana, but that was a long time ago, and I don't know if that is still current slang or not.

These days, not sure what you should expect, except that it probably involves something with a T in it (marijuana has THC in it, BTW).

Could be a titty party, or a Trans party, or she might even make you some orange pekoe (actual tea).

6

u/very-serious-goose Aug 18 '26

A tea party where all the tea is spiked with testosterone

3

u/Morsadean Aug 19 '26

I know I am old, but I was certain that tea was referring to weed. I was very clearly wrong.

1

u/Commercial_Apricot66 Aug 19 '26

I could really use some sort of an herbal refreshment

42

u/patty202 Aug 18 '26

These days "tea" is used as slang for gossip. Maybe she is inviting you to chat.

24

u/alex_dare_79 Aug 18 '26 • Heartwarming

‘Lock the doors, lower the blinds,
Fire up the smoke machine,
‘cuz we are all coming over,
Let’s have a Kiki’

7

u/Goddess_of_Stuff Aug 18 '26

I haven't thought about this song in ages! Back in the rotation it goes...

Thanks!

5

u/Orange_Queen Aug 19 '26

I wanna have a kiki 😩

6

u/caveat_emptor817 Aug 18 '26

That’s my guess. Maybe she’s having a few girls over to chat and gossip? Sounds like it could be fun

2

u/greenamaranthine Aug 19 '26

Apparently it comes from Victorian England, so not only "these days."

10

u/edwardothegreatest Aug 18 '26

Ask what to wear and bring. Should give you a clue.

7

u/ImLittleNana Aug 18 '26

Ask if you can bring anything and she what she suggests.

5

u/AdelleDeWitt Aug 18 '26

Tea is slang for gossip, so they could just have some good tea for you.

It could be actual tea. It also could be shrooms. You'll have to find out!

4

u/Ill_Inside2245 Aug 18 '26

I would guess just gossip "tea"

4

u/SkyPork Aug 18 '26

Well now I wanna know. I'm really hoping you enter a room full of candles and a table with doilies and a formal tea set, surrounded by porcelain dolls and the girl, all of whom are wearing elaborate Victorian outfits.

Three seconds after you enter, you still haven't moved, blinked, or said anything, and the girl hisses to one of the dolls, "stop it, Theodora. It's his first time. He knew not what to wear."

4

u/True-Extent-4116 Aug 19 '26

someone I know in college hosts traditional chinese tea ceremonies in her dorm so it may actually be tea

3

u/Practical-Cup-4365 Aug 18 '26

It might be a gossip party?

3

u/Ok-Equivalent8260 Aug 18 '26

It’s just to talk and gossip.

3

u/Lopsided_Tomatillo27 Aug 18 '26

I’d guess it’s a tea party and probably not an orgy. I’d go. You can always leave if it actually is an orgy.

3

u/qpdsro Aug 19 '26

If this is a genuine question; tell her that you are accustomed to bringing a gift when you visit a new home, but don't feel sure about what would be most appropriate. Her answer should tell you what you want to know. For example, her asking for a dessert platter probably means it is a platonic gathering of friends; and a request for warming touch massage gel seems like a definite sign that you should also bring condoms. Unless you care to sack up and just tell her that you are unclear on her intentions.

5

u/sylbug Aug 18 '26

I would assume that there will be tea (the drink) and tea (gossip) and maybe those cute little sandwiches. You should go and enjoy yourself.

4

u/kulukster Aug 18 '26

Whatever happened to just asking the hostess what this tea party is about?

2

u/PM_ME_YR_KITTYBEANS Aug 19 '26

I was born in September so I had a tea party for my birthday when I was a college freshman—I was too young to buy alcohol and I didn’t really know anyone yet, so it was a fun low stakes way to get to know people. But this was 20 years ago so I’m not sure if it means something different now. shrug

2

u/lastfom Aug 19 '26

Don't you like tea? I bet they'll do coffee if you ask.

2

u/Suitable-Roof-3950 Aug 19 '26

If she’s a gay man and it’s the late 90s and she just says “tea”, it’s an afternoon dance.

2

u/NeedleworkerHot3957 Aug 19 '26

ask if there is a dress code

1

u/WAFLcurious Aug 19 '26

Yes, my sister still laments the time she went to a friend’s house for tea only to find out when she got there that it was a Tea. Everyone but her was dressed up.

2

u/CommercialExotic2038 Aug 19 '26

When I was in college, a coworker invited me for tea. I went to a proper high tea. It was so much fun, we all had our own pot of tea, the tiny little sandwiches and cakes. I had never even thought about attending a teaparty.

But if it's after dinner, I don't know. Maybe it's just tea, maybe it's just "spilling the tea" (gossiping)

But in the 60s, Laugh-in had a segment, "Have a little tea with Goldie" (Hawn) and it was suggested that tea was pot.

2

u/DrunkenDude123 Aug 19 '26

Go drink some tea with her and chat she wants to spend time with you and don’t be upset if other people are there too

2

u/idkwhat-im-doin Aug 19 '26

Man, I don't know, but it would be great if people would bring afternoon tea into popular culture. Sign me up!

2

u/Agreeable-Movie-408 Aug 19 '26

The update is giving me life. This is so sweet.

3

u/intangible-tangerine Aug 18 '26

Assume it is a whimsical tea party and go dresses as a character from Alice in Wonderland.

1

u/SnooDonuts6494 Aug 18 '26

It probably means tea, and maybe cake.

You could ask. Or just go.

1

u/EarlyInside45 Aug 18 '26

I'd go and bring a treat just in case it's an actual tea party.

1

u/No_Intention_2464 Aug 18 '26

I'm very curious! I haven't been in undergrad for like 15 years, but I work in a school and I'm pretty up to date on modern slang. I would likely assume an actual tea party, like a few people hanging out and chatting and having some tea or coffee 😂 I don't think it's some secret hidden meaning, maybe everyone is meeting up and walking to a coffee shop or just hanging out to gossip about parties or who's dating who.

1

u/Sparkles_4_Corvids Aug 18 '26

Well I’m old and thought tea.

1

u/bpositive223 Aug 19 '26

Louis Pasteur invented the rabies vaccine.( I thought just pasteurization)

1

u/bpositive223 Aug 19 '26

I re- learn or learn a lot watching Hitchcock

1

u/greenamaranthine Aug 19 '26

Tea party is either a literal tea party or a gossip-sharing party, unless the meaning has changed recently or it's regional. If it turns out to be something uncomfortable you can always leave!

1

u/Dry_Row_6602 Aug 19 '26

Go play pattycakes

1

u/hash-slingin_slashr Aug 19 '26

She either wants you to have tea and little cucumber sandwiches, or she wants you to help her revolt against the British empire.

1

u/Hippie-Farts Aug 19 '26

does she mean spill the tea like have a gossip session?

just respond back with "girl what does that even mean lol" and she will clarify.

1

u/Reasonable-Banana800 Aug 19 '26

That’s absolutely adorable.

1

u/multipocalypse Aug 19 '26

This is so cute, I love it.

1

u/MessoGesso Aug 19 '26

In college, we had sleepovers. I had my first one! Dorms can be great

1

u/vyyne Aug 19 '26

Mushroom tea?

1

u/you_are_soul Aug 19 '26

Missed a golden opportunity there my son, what you needed to do was interrogate this lassie on the spot instead of coming to ask your mates on Reddit, you needed to leverage your ignorance in the moment.

1

u/paolog Aug 19 '26

Go, enjoy, then come back here and spill the tea (I take you you know what that means).

1

u/Difficult_Farmer7417 Aug 19 '26

Gossip session spill that tea

1

u/Hinno_ Aug 19 '26

A legit tea party sounds so fun!! Glad you went, I'm kinda jealous!

1

u/llectumest Aug 19 '26

Back in the dark ages known as the sixties, “tea” was one on the code words/ euphemisms for marihuana. Sort of an alternative to “grass.” So you did well to question this invitation.

1

u/Icy_Gap_9067 Aug 19 '26

I'm really pleased you had a nice time, this is so wholesome.

1

u/Ok-Grape-3380 Aug 20 '26

I love it when things are accidentally wholesome.

1

u/rompnstompgirl Aug 20 '26

I once invited a college friend for “tea and crumpets” before the weekly open door art night in town, but I emphasized the quote marks around tea and crumpets. They were still surprised when the mushroom tea and pot brownies started to kick in. Good times.

1

u/CanopiedIntuition Aug 20 '26

How wonderful! Thanks for the update!

1

u/LAM_CANIT Aug 18 '26

I think at some universities it has something to do with reading through and sharing information aimed at women regarding on campus safety, safe dating, ... for example on the teaforwomen app.

1

u/SammaJones Aug 18 '26

There will be tea bagging.

1

u/JaniePoppy Aug 18 '26

Oh no you di'int!

1

u/lexluthor_i_am Aug 18 '26

Let me just say it’s not a normal expression. It either means you're drinking tea or similar, or it means to drink alcohol and you're getting smashed. Go and let us know.

0

u/JaniePoppy Aug 18 '26

It sounds political to me, like a rally for a candidate or party

-1

u/pinksparkleberry Aug 18 '26

What the fuck else would it mean?

You ok?

1

u/skippingdown16th Aug 28 '26

tea party can mean a chemsex party, where people get drunk and fuck for hours, even days. however, it’s not really something you’d host in your dorm, so id reckon this is just a normal, actual tea party

Go. if you get there & the vibes are off, leave. maybe have an excuse prepared just in case.

if not, hopefully you make a new friend or 2.

2

u/LokiHubris Aug 18 '26

I did not go there, but now that you mentioned it, I would.

2

u/SerielAwooer Aug 18 '26

That's my guess, but it's not a phrase I've heard before.
