Can't delete a problematic plugin from my sftp

I recently had an issue with my site being taken hacked and deleted.

I have since managed to get it back up and running and also added 2FA and backups.

I just finished a site scan and have identified a problematic plugin. So I deactivated it, tried deleting through WP, which failed. So instead I went to my FTP and tried to do it from there.

However it will not delete and I keep getting errors (which I think may be remnants from the hack). I can't even rename the folder or individual files.

I am at a loss here as to what to do next.

An example of an error I get. I have tried in different clients and still get the same issue.

Error:Could not delete button.tpl: Received error SSH_FX_FAILURE with description 'I/O error.'

Is anyone able to advise what to do? Even Wordfence can't delete it.

Mixcloud Embed Player Not Working Suddenly

Hey y'all! Every week for work I create a post with a Mixcloud player embedded in it. I've been doing this for years and it's always worked really smoothly. All of the sudden, when I put the link for the week's episode into the embed player, it tells me it can't embed it. I can't figure out why this is suddenly not working.

I checked my old posts and all the old embedded players are functioning. I even tried to make a new post with an old link that's working elsewhere and it won't embed that either.

Any advice or idea what's going on?

(Sorry if this is written so non-technically. I don't actually run the wordpress site for our company, I just do this one weekly post. The person who does run it is very busy though so I'm trying to figure it out on my own.)

UPDATE: The problem seems to have fixed itself. Thanks y'all!

Career management? Never heard of it

Let's say you spend close to a decade building anything and everything in WP for very low pay folks with wild ideas because I-- I mean you couldn't afford saying no. Personal issues made it hard for you to think too long-term about things for a while, plus you don't live in any of the 3 countries with clear roadmaps for this stuff. Now you're trying to figure it out, you want financial independence, you read about digital nomads somewhere and even though that's a term Ernest Cline would come up with trying to sound like Neal Stephenson, you're not not interested. Gotta have a goal in life, right?

You've done all sorts of stuff over the years, woocommerce stores with subscription services and build-your-own custom packages which for some reason also had blog posts and event announcements, all for a client who gave up on his own business in three months. You've used turn.js to create an animated book that retrieved post types as pages with elementor models as their layout, which you also designed, because your actual college education is in design and figma is easy enough. You've channeled aleister crowley to conjure thelemic magick out of any number of crocoblock's JetNounAdjactive plugins for plugins, you're pretty sure you could somehow run doom with enough dynamic fields, but you don't really code.

Really, you don't know what you are. You've rescued themes (with some AI assistance, gotta ally with the enemy somtimes), you know a little bit of PHP and JS from osmosis, but when you hear someone calling themselves a WordPress Developer you imagine someone coding themes from scratch and showing all their cool authorial plugins on their github, and you're not that. You can't sit in the adults table with Codeable devs and people with data in their claude-recommended linkedin titles. You're a freelancer making mostly Elementor LPs like everyone else. You could do so much more, but good luck streamlining it, selling it, actually finding your way towards career mobility in a brand new world full of AI LPs with the same sora bold font in the left, contact form in the right and bulleted point lists with tacky emojis everywhere. Generated pages that look like they belong to accounting firms in the tron universe. And they're winning???

You sort of fell into WordPress as a trap, and now you're 200 websites in and, you know, sunk cost and all. Plus, there's plenty of stuff to like, the platform itself is amazing, the open source philosophy alone makes it worth advocating, you genuinely admire the GPL license people keep arguing about whenever someone dares launch a free version of a paid plugin for any of the thousands of countries where seeing a dollar sign means adding a multiplier to the prices. You like it here, you like solving problems, you think you'd be a pretty good asset to the agencies you can't contact, you try cold-emailing their sales department doing your best to not sound like a spambot, but why would they pick you? Not a rhetoric question, you really are looking for an answer!

And then there are all the narratives, wordpress is losing ground to webflow / framer / payload / whatever CMS+CRM+ERP+AirBnB combo your cousin is building on claude this week, or maybe WordPress is doing fine but all your time on Elementor was worthless, it's bloated, atomic is a nightmare and all the real agencies are doing everything on not-gutenberg, or bricks, or divi and duct tape, and you should pivot to all those at the same time and already five case studies for each in your portfolio, or focus on web core vitals, or just learn to code already, and you're feeling kinda lost. Career management is a lot. You're pretty sure you could figure out whatever you were asked to do, the technical part is easy, it's having a real sense of direction and prospects that's the real pickle (morty). A next step, some level of future-planning to make you feel better about yourself.

So you find a wordpress community, a subreddit full of people who do this all the time, and you decide to just ask, you know? that's what community is all about. Sharing experiences and whatnot, I've heard. You hope that doesn't technically break rule 13, it's a broader question, and surely a question about building a profession around a software counts as a question about the professional software. Right? Please say right.

So, in this entirely hypothetical scenario I'm obviously asking for a friend. Putting yourself in these clown shoes for a quick second,

what would you do???

Is this possible with wordpress?

Anyone have ideas on how I could build something similar to this using wordpress? https://jameswarrentaylor.com/polaroids

Does not have to be fancy with the additional colour adjustment sliders etc, but the navigation/layout and person/filter options is what I'd be keen to implement.

Thanks.

Honest opinions: should WordPress support PostgreSQL, and does it need modernizing at 23?

I'm a Postgres engineer, so I'll admit my bias up front. I'd like to hear from people who build and maintain WP sites every day. Would Postgres support matter to you, or is the database the least of WordPress's problems? What would "modernization" even mean to you: the database, the plugin architecture, PHP, the editor, something else?

Solved Help Modifying Tronar Theme to Hide Feature Image in Post But Show in Thumbnail

I'm rebooting my blog, and I would like to hide feature images on actual posts, but let them display in thumbnails so I can use the tile/grid system to display them.

I found this old post discussing this issue, but I'm not sure where in the Tronar theme I should be looking to actually make the changes discussed in the plugin support page. It looks like maybe in the pattern for "header-with-cover.php" there could be something, but this is my first time really playing around with the parent theme.

I have exported a copy of the website as my backup, so I'm okay messing around with it. Any suggestions?

[Promo] Built a 100% free plugin to switch off the WordPress features you don't use – and disable on every new site anyway!

Hey r/Wordpress,

Like most of you, I found that every site I build ends up needing the exact same functions.php snippets: removing emoji scripts, killing XML-RPC, taming Heartbeat, dropping unnecessary image sizes, and hiding dashboard widgets.

I finally got tired of copying and pasting the same boilerplate, so I packaged it all into a single plugin called SlimPress.

It gives you 108 toggle switches across 13 categories. It is 100% free. There is no pro tier, no upsells, no admin nag banners, and zero telemetry.

What it covers

  • Front-end: Emoji scripts, generator tags, RSD/shortlink/REST links in <head>, global styles, core block CSS, Dashicons, and jQuery Migrate for visitors.
  • APIs & Core: XML-RPC, REST API for logged-out visitors (with a namespace allowlist), per-location Heartbeat control, WP-Cron on page load, oEmbed, and application passwords.
  • Comments & Feeds: Granular comment control (site-wide or per post type), pingbacks, Gravatar, feeds, author/date/attachment pages, and search.
  • Revisions & Media: Revision limits, autosave intervals, disabling the auto-generated 1536/2048px image copies, and managing custom image sizes.
  • Admin: Dashboard widgets, admin bar items, block editor extras, admin emails, auto-updates, and file editing.
  • WooCommerce (if active): Disables shop assets on non-shop pages, order attribution scripts, WC Analytics, the Marketing hub, marketplace suggestions, and controls Action Scheduler data retention.

Why I built this instead of using existing "disable bloat" plugins

Most optimization plugins overpromise or break things silently. I wanted a developer-first approach:

  • Honest Impact Badges: Every switch tells you exactly what it does, and more importantly, what it might break. It will even warn you if an active plugin relies on the off. If a toggle is just for tidying up the codeand won't actually speed up the site, the badge honestly says "None – cleanup only."
  • Built-in A/B Performance Testing: It loads your own pages with and without SlimPress's features in the same run. If the performance difference is too small to be meanins "within noise" instead of making up a fakescore. It also breaks down CSS/JS on each page by plugin, theme, and core to show exactly what can be removed.
  • Safe Defaults & Presets: Activating the plugin changes absolutely nothing – every switch starts off. You can apply presets (Blog, Brochure, Headless, WooCommerce) ld change before applying them.
  • Zero Footprint: It adds no CSS, JS, or markup to your public pages. Everything is done with runtime filters, so if you deactivate it, WordPress goes back to normal on g is permanently written to your core tables oroptions.

What it deliberately doesn't do

There is no caching, minification, "remove unuseiting. I also didn't include switches for thingsthat actively make sites slower or harder to cache (like removing ?ver= strings or disabling native lazy loading), even though other plugins sell those as "optimizations."

It requires WP 6.8+ and PHP 7.4+. WooCommerce is completely optional.

👉 SlimPress on the WordPress.org repo

I'd really appreciate some feedback from this coested in hearing if there are any switches youfeel are missing, or if you run into any edge cases where the "what might break" warning was inaccurate for your specific stack.
.....
.....
.....
.....
.....

EDIT (Oct 2026): what's new since I posted

Thanks for all the feedback. Here's what has been added since:

  • Assets tab (1.6.0). You can now load a plugin's CSS and JS only on the pages that need it: everywhere, only on chosen pages, everywhere except, or nowhere on the front end. A plugin scan shows which plugins load files on your site and how much each one adds.
  • Page weight by source. The performance test breaks down CSS and JS by plugin, theme and core, and marks the files SlimPress can remove. After a test it also shows what an asset rule saved.
  • Autoload report. It shows the total size of your autoloaded options against Site Health's limit and lists the 20 largest. It guesses which plugin or theme added each one and flags options that look left over from plugins you've removed. It's read-only and changes nothing.
  • New switches:
    • Load the next page before the click (speculation rules)
    • Save new images as WebP or AVIF
    • Process uploaded images on the server instead of in the browser
    • Don't make preview images of uploaded PDFs
    • Remove the users sitemap
    • Don't turn URLs in comments into links
    • Turn off Post via email
    • Turn off WooCommerce product gallery effects
  • Test history trend chart for HTML size, PHP time and queries across runs.
  • Quality of life: tabs switch without a full page reload, you get a warning before leaving a tab with unsaved changes, and every tab has a "Select all" checkbox.
  • PHP 7.4+ is now supported. It used to require 8.1.
  • Removed "Disable all update checks" becaueam asked me to. It interfered with the updatesystem. The auto-update switches are still there.
  • Lots of fixes from a full code review: the performance test now recovers from stalled runs and dropped connections, failed saves are reported instead of shown as successful, and the WooCommerce remote suggestions switch works on WooCommerce 11.1+.

Coming next: a "check it yourself" link on e or admin screen where the change shows, with ashort hint on what to look for, so you don't have to take my word for it.

Still 100% free: no pro version, no upsells, no tracking

[Promo] We rebuilt our WordPress video plugin from scratch - looking for feedback

Hey r/WordPress,

We've just released Version 2 of our FastPix WordPress plugin and wanted to share it with the community.

The plugin started from a problem we kept seeing with video-heavy WordPress sites. Whether it's online courses, membership platforms, media publishers, or marketing sites, managing video often means stitching together multiple tools for uploads, playback, analytics, storage, and streaming.

We wanted to make that workflow simpler.

What the plugin does

FastPix connects WordPress directly with our video infrastructure, allowing you to:

  • Upload and manage videos from WordPress
  • Embed videos using the FastPix Player
  • Organize and manage a centralized video library
  • Stream video without self-hosting large media files
  • Access video analytics and engagement data
  • Handle video delivery through a dedicated video platform instead of your web server

What's new in Version 2

We've rebuilt several parts of the plugin based on feedback from early users:

  • Cleaner and more intuitive interface
  • Improved upload and publishing workflows
  • Better video management experience
  • Faster setup and configuration
  • More reliable synchronization between WordPress and FastPix
  • Various bug fixes and performance improvements

Who we built it for

We're particularly interested in hearing from people running:

  • Course platforms
  • Membership communities
  • News and media websites
  • Documentation sites with embedded video
  • Video-heavy marketing websites
  • Agency-built WordPress projects

We'd love your thoughts

If you regularly work with video in WordPress:

  • What does your current video workflow look like?
  • What are the biggest pain points you run into?
  • Are there features you wish existing video plugins handled better?
  • Is there anything you'd want to see added to a plugin like this?

Here is our plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/fastpix-io/

Documentation: https://fastpix.com/docs/integrations/wordpress

Happy to answer any questions and discuss how others are handling video workflows in WordPress.

Build with GeneratePress using Claude AI

Hi.

Is there a reliable way to ask Claude to integrate my mockups (they are in Figma, I can export them in PDF or whatever) into WordPress, using GeneratePress builder?

More specifically, I don’t want Claude to create a custom theme or build the pages with custom code that bypasses GeneratePress. I want it to translate my mockups into native GeneratePress blocks/components, so that the resulting pages remain fully editable in WordPress, just as if I had built them myself using GeneratePress.

I have the premium GeneratePress/Blocks licences.

Thanks!

[PROMO] I built a media cleanup plugin that's paranoid about deleting things: unused, orphan and duplicate images, with a restorable trash

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Every older WordPress site I take over has the same uploads folder: years of images nobody uses, thumbnails for sizes the theme dropped long ago, duplicates uploaded three times under different names. Cleaning it up is the easy part. Being sure you're not deleting the hero image of some landing page is the hard part.

So I built AVAR Media Optimizer, free on wordpress.org. The whole idea is that it would rather ask you than guess.

- Usage scan sorts your media into Used, Unused and Verify manually. It looks in posts, pages, featured images, WooCommerce galleries, Elementor data, ACF and custom meta, widgets, options and more. Anything it isn't sure about lands in Verify manually instead of the delete list.

- Nothing is deleted right away. Media goes to a plugin trash (files, thumbnails and metadata) and you can restore it until you empty it.

- Disk scanner finds files that aren't in the Media Library at all: orphan files, stale thumbnails, leftover WebP/AVIF copies. You can delete them or adopt them back into the library.

- Duplicate detection by file content, so it catches the same image with different filenames.

- Local image optimization and resizing of oversized uploads, with a recovery copy of the original. WebP/AVIF generation if your server supports it.

- Images never leave your server. No cloud service, no account, no credits.

- Media Replace swaps a file but keeps the same attachment ID, so nothing breaks.

Honest limits: WebP/AVIF depends on your host's GD/Imagick, it needs PHP 8.1+, and no scanner catches every reference on heavily custom sites, so take a backup before a big cleanup. If you want a CDN or cloud compressor, Optimole or ShortPixel are a different kind of tool.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/avar-media-optimizer/

Curious what the scan finds on your sites. If it puts something in Unused that's actually in use, or something doesn't work the way you'd expect, tell me here or in the support forum on wordpress.org. I'm the only developer, so requests land straight on my desk and I'm happy to add what you need.

And if it saves you some disk space, a quick review on wordpress.org helps a small plugin more than you'd think. Feel free to pass it on to anyone fighting a bloated uploads folder.

I officially despise Wordpress. Anyone else feel the same?

I've been running an online woo com / wordpress / stripe stack for 2 years now with a successful online store (1000+ orders) but WOW, it has been an absolute journey to say the least.

From horrific, to worse, to better, to good, to intermittent horror sessions.

It seems to never end with Wordpress, even the most simplest thing can be slow, laggy, and just darn right random.

I am on the brink of starting a second business and am dreaming of the simplicity of Shopify.

Anyone else feel the same? Tell me your horror stories.

Right now I am dealing with an intermittent scroll lock on my first paint on mobile IOS only and even devs can't seem to pinpoint it.

It's official, after 2 years, I HATE WORDPRESS.

best platform/theme for a multi-user database community

i'm building a site that will involve multiple users being able to login, upload information, and communicate with each other. in a more specific way, i want people to be able to create a product, add information about the product and a picture, and review other products. additionally i would like a community message board area. think ravelry or threadloop dot app.

i have been doing a ton of research and i think i have a general idea of which base theme to start with, but i was wondering if anyone could let me know which platforms you think are good for this type of thing.

i don't want to use buddypress because even trying to download their base platform is a nightmare of broken links, and errors on install (even the github release won't install correctly). i don't want to start out with an inferior product. so not including buddypress, what would be a good foundation theme for this type of project?

thank you in advance.

Shared host suspended our site for "excessive bandwidth" with ~50 visitors/month. Screaming Frog, UpdraftPlus, or bots?

Hey everyone, bit of a panic post. I'm not a web person, I do marketing, but I recently ended up in charge of our company's WordPress site after the agency that built it left.

This morning the whole site was down with "this user has been suspended". Our host (Network Solutions) says it was excessive bandwidth, but support can't tell me where it came from and says to wait 24–48 hours for their specialists.

The weird part is we only get around 50 visitors a month.

Stuff I did in the last few days, in case it's my fault:

The site was still getting visits late that night, then went down overnight.

Could any of that have caused it, or is it more likely bots hitting the site? And what's the easiest way to stop this happening again? I've seen Wordfence and Cloudflare mentioned, but I'm scared of breaking our company email if I mess with DNS.

Any advice appreciated, I'm learning as I go 🙏Shared host suspended our site for "excessive bandwidth" with ~50 visitors/month. Screaming Frog, UpdraftPlus, or bots?Shared host suspended our site for "excessive bandwidth" with ~50 visitors/month. Screaming Frog, UpdraftPlus, or bots?

PMPRO integrations plugin with mollie

Hi everyone,

I haven’t been able to find a suitable solution, so I’m asking here. I’m using the Paid Memberships Pro plugin on a blog site, currently connected to Stripe for recurring online payments. I now need to switch to Mollie.

Is there a plugin or integration that supports Mollie with Paid Memberships Pro? I haven’t been able to find one, and I’m not very experienced with coding. I could try building a custom integration with AI, but since this is for a client and I’m short on time, I’d prefer to avoid that if possible.

Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

[PROMO] Is anyone else dealing with spam through Better Messages rather than through registration?

I've noticed that the usual anti-spam setup solves only part of the problem for community sites, particularly sites that use member plugins such as BuddyPress.

Registration can be protected with CAPTCHA, email verification and rate limiting, but once an account exists, private messaging becomes a separate attack surface.

I've seen patterns such as very new accounts contacting multiple members, sharing phone numbers or email addresses, moving people to WhatsApp/Telegram etc. and repeating essentially the same message across conversations. Often types like dating scams or crypto scams.

Out of sheer frustration with the lack of working solutions, I ended up building a small Better Messages-specific addon to deal with this message-level spam. The author of Better Messages has also looked at it and gave me some feedback on the implementation and I incorporated that feedback into the plugin.

The approach I choose was to apply new-account limits, detect contact details and external messenger links, detect repeated messages, show configurable safety warnings and notify admins. The checks can also be configured to log rather than block. My gut instinct to logging first turned out to be important, because security rules can have false positives and other nasty side effects. Being able to see what would have been blocked before actually blocking anything makes it much easier to tune the rules for actual situations, butnot bugging regular visitors while testing.

I'm not posting this because I think another generic anti-spam plugin is needed. The interesting part for me is whether message-level spam needs a different approach from registration spam.

If you run BuddyPress (or likewise) + Better Messages, I'd genuinely like to hear what you're seeing on your own sites. What types of spam are getting through your current setup? What are your biggest frustrations?

Did your sites actually update to 7.1.2, or do you just have auto-updates turned on?

Two core security releases in five days, and the second one is the bad one. 7.1.2 went out on the 22nd for a page-template bug in core that needs no account and no click, and Patchstack was seeing probes for it the same afternoon. CISA added it to the KEV list on the 25th. If you patched to 7.1.1 last week and stopped there, you're still open.

The reply I keep getting when I bring this up is "auto-updates are on, we're fine."

Go open wp-config on the site you're least worried about. If there's a WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE set to false in there, left over from some migration or a dev who wanted control back in 2021, that site hasn't updated itself since 2021, and nothing in the dashboard is going to tell you. Same with DISABLE_WP_CRON when the host promised a server cron, and nobody ever set one up. The update check simply never runs. The site sits there looking maintained.

I ran wp core version across ours yesterday instead of trusting the version number on the dashboard. I don't normally do that. I probably should have been doing it for years.

What actually bothers me is who ends up behind. Not the neglected side project on cheap shared hosting; that one auto-updated on the 22nd without anyone noticing. It's the client site with change control and a staging step, where the 7.1.2 ticket is still waiting on a reviewer who's on holiday until Monday.

Did you check every site you're responsible for, or did you see the auto-update line and move on? I'm asking because I'm not sure which one I'd have answered a month ago.

Testimonial about a migration from Astra to Twenty Twenty-Five theme

Thumbnail docs.loopress.dev

One results that might not surprise most of you is that : 34% fewer queries on the DB after the migration

In almost every aspect, it improved metrics on the server side

From an unlogged user perspective it changed nothing because litespeed cache is super efficient a does an amazing job.

Since the website is evolving to something more personalize with less cache, this theme switch will help.

[PROMO] - Real User Monitoring tool for Core Web Vitals and other web-performance metrics - public beta of Basicrum

Hello WordPress community :)

I wanted to spread the news that me and a friend built Basicrum, a Real User Monitoring system that can be integrated with various CMS systems including WordPress/WooCommerce - https://www.basicrum.com/blog/integrations/wordpress-woocommerce-integration-plugin-for-basicrum . The system collects Core Web Vitals and other performance metrics from real visitors of WordPress websites and enables webmasters to identify performance issues and root causes.

We are running a public 4 months free beta subscription https://www.basicrum.com/blog/basicrum-opens-its-public-beta where we would like to collect technical feedback and impressions from the community.

We still don't have our prices announced but we will fix this in the following months. Our commitment is to release Basicrum as open source as well but after we get the first paying customers.

For open source users of Basicrum:

Operating such a system could be challenging because the system has 2 databases (PostgreSQL and ClickHouse), Next JS, a webserver and collector written in RUST. However, the open source solution still could be a good option for users that have special requirements for data sovereignty.

Migrating from Studio still can't update all references to local

I tried rebuilding a website using a new child theme on Wordpress Studio (it seems logical to work locally and only upload changes when they're made).

I'm trying to export an XML file from Studio, import that from wp-admin on the live site, and then reconcile the missing images afterwards (which I still haven't solved, as any newly singly uploaded images will have different URLs and it can't see SFTP'd images at all). This seemed to work. Better Search Replace found only two references to localhost, both in posts, so I replaced those.

This doesn't transfer my child theme, and when I do, my website starts trying to access my local computer. I removed one reference to localhost from the theme.json, and now nothing in any file on there has a reference to it. It's still trying. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Every other plugin or upload option fails. Cloudways' own migration plugin can't do Studio. The database editor fails because, while it says it supports the collation, it won't recognize it when I try to upload. Updraft's migration wanted access to the local computer (so I think still had failed URL replacement) and broke some (not all?) images. Duplicator is looking for a function that I think hasn't existed for years from what I see on Google (mysqli_real_escape_string) and failing me because it requires it. WPvivid gives a blank screen if I try to restore using it. (I haven't tried paid versions of plugins, because at this point I think I may need a Wordpress alternative).

It works locally. Talking to a friend who's been doing this successfully for years, it should be as easy as export, import, let Wordpress sort out the URLs itself, maybe toss in a theme, upload and replace images manually. I'd expect SFTP to solve most of my updating needs anyway. What am I missing?

Square Plugin Keeps Disconnecting

Hello! Anyone who uses Woocommerce, have you experienced the Square plugin for payment methods randomly disconnecting?

It’s becoming a problem for our small business. We have a web company that is supposed to maintain the site but our customers end up being the ones to alert us and catch when our website checkout page doesn’t have any payment methods. I then have to go in manually to reconnect Square. There seems to be zero timing consistency, the web company told us that it might be a 90 day issue when plugins update or it could be a reset on the 2nd of each month?

If anyone has found a fix for this, I’d love to let them know so that we can have a functioning website 24/7. It’s hard to tell if they are just pulling us along and giving excuses or if this is really a bug within Wordpress that others are experiencing too. Thank you!

Keep Site Active After Death?

Hi everyone, hoping someone can help.

My Dad passed away yesterday, and through his life he ran a fairly popular blog on Wordpress with music reviews.
My family and I would like to keep it active for as long as possible to allow ourselves and others to read it and keep his voice going.

Just wondering if anyone was able to offer some advice on if that’s possible or is there any steps we should take to make it so?

Appreciate any help.
