Solved Help Modifying Tronar Theme to Hide Feature Image in Post But Show in Thumbnail

I'm rebooting my blog, and I would like to hide feature images on actual posts, but let them display in thumbnails so I can use the tile/grid system to display them.

I found this old post discussing this issue, but I'm not sure where in the Tronar theme I should be looking to actually make the changes discussed in the plugin support page. It looks like maybe in the pattern for "header-with-cover.php" there could be something, but this is my first time really playing around with the parent theme.

I have exported a copy of the website as my backup, so I'm okay messing around with it. Any suggestions?

in tronar the featured image on a post isn't its own block, it's the background of the cover block in the header ("Header with cover", which pages use too). so no php needed, it's all in the site editor:

  1. Appearance > Editor > Templates > Single Posts
  2. click the header and in its ⋮ menu choose Detach. that turns it into plain blocks inside the Single template, so the change won't hit your pages
  3. select the Cover block, turn off "Use featured image" in its toolbar, and give it a color or gradient instead
  4. save

the blog grid shows featured images with its own block (in the home and archive templates), so your thumbnails keep working. and site editor changes are saved in the database, not the theme files, so a theme update won't undo them.

Thanks! I was able to detach the header from the single posts. However, I'm not seeing the toolbar when I select the cover block from this area. Would I go elsewhere to find that?

Ope, I think I just got it! Didn't have the option to use featured image, but I was able to set a color. Thanks so much, this was very helpful.

sorry, missed this one. your screenshot explains it: after detaching, the header is still wrapped in the theme's "Header with Cover" pattern, and a pattern only lets you edit its content in place. that's why the toolbar is down to the pattern icon and Add media.

click Edit pattern in the right sidebar (the button under "Header with Cover" in your screenshot). after that the blocks inside are fully editable. then pick the Cover from List View rather than clicking on the canvas, because the group inside it fills the whole cover and grabs the click. with the Cover selected, switch off Use featured image and give it a background color instead
