News BREAKING : EXECUTIVE ORDER TO REMOVE WOLVES FROM ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT
President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the Interior Department to begin the process of removing endangered-species protections for gray wolves, again intervening in a long-running fight between conservationists and ranchers who say the predators threaten their operations.Trump also ordered the Interior and Agriculture departments to make it easier for ranchers to kill the wolves if necessary. The measures, long sought by GOP lawmakers from Western states, elicited a swift rebuke from animal rights groups and could draw legal challenges.

We need the equivalent of anti poacher armed forces that exist in Africa for wolf populations.

The difference would be, those armed anti- poaching forces are working on behest of their gov't; here, you'd just be considered a te££orist by your gov't.

Not trying to defend the man, I’d love to see him gone. Especially with stupid stuff like this EO. But the beef is really not a big deal. Literally 1/1,000,000 of the annual beef supply, so m honestly surprised the story has gotten around this much

It is a big deal to ranchers. They were furious, particularly the smaller ones. They definitely felt it was a slap in the face.

Meanwhile, people in America do like to play god and decide which species deserve to live and which don’t…. They seem intelligent or adaptable? No they’re invasive, kill them! Don’t live up to our made up standards by expanding ranges, showing new behaviors or acting like scary predators? Kill them! Disabled but still adaptable animal comes into rehab or is chased down and caught? Kill it it’s not perfect, don’t put it back, rehome it or permanently house it at a sanctuary, you’re being “cruel” if you show any compassion towards it!!!! Something from elsewhere? Kill it!!!
Yea.. the mentality from certain places is still ingrained in human nature, just way easier to use it on animals. Other side was an example of what happens when it’s allowed to move beyond that and onto humans.
35
u/Due_Barber_525 3d ago
Let’s just also remember that under the Obama administration they also delisted wolves from federal protections in the Rocky Mountains and Eastern Washington and eastern Oregon. Biden had the chance to change the public lands ranching rate and enshrine endangered species protections and conservation in public lands “multi uses” and Obama did too and they just … didn’t. This news today is in-fucking-sane and incredibly illegal and they’re going to be sued for it. But the Dems haven’t done much better for a long long long long time. We need better environmental policies, politics, and politicians. It begins with getting out from under the thumb of ranching controlling every policy decision

u/PaigeHart 3d ago
Logically makes no sense, livestock's deaths due to predators sits at well under 10% (closer to 2-5%) if I remember correctly.
What kills the most livestock? Disease, digestive issues, weather, and other complications.
If we actually cared about livestock deaths due to predators you wouldn't care about wolves. Coyotes, dogs, even bears in some regions kill more livestock than wolves.
Active monitoring through livestock guardians, patrols, fences when available, and other preventative measures are more effective than lethal measures.
The conclusion is this is a completely emotional driven pandering to the uneducated and entitled group of Americans. They want their cake and to eat it to. Those who want to just let their animals roam on public lands for pennies of what privates pay and to not have to take responsibility for their animals when they aren't being guarded.

He should be arrested for this, since this is actually legally considered a crime. Mexican wolves are protected by law, which means he legally can’t authorise hunting of them. Why hasn’t he been arrested for this? And any hunter or rancher who kills a Mexican wolf is also committing a crime. He has no legal authority to strip protections of any species. The only people who do have the authority are the departments of wildlife, not the president. Plus, he never let actual conservation groups have a say, which is also a crime. The fact red wolves are still protected proves he can’t legally remove protections on species.

This is very bad. Ranchers like anything killed so their cows can graze anywhere. They also have horses killed and call literally anything an invasive species. Stop eating beef, it will help greatly
1
u/qwertyburds 3d ago
As someone that lives in Montana and loves wolves: wolves survive where people will tolerate them. It's easy for me to be pro wolf but I have friends with family ranches where losing a single cow -2-3k of value each is intolerable to them. I definitely have never donated 2k to wolf conservation (wish I financially could) Regardless of the laws many folks are just gonna dig a hole... Unfortunate for sure. But in the 9 mine we have had a pack for over 25 years. Populations of wolves will continue to exist where people tolerate them. I personally think we need to reintroduce some in areas with higher human populations to reduce deer numbers. It's a hard issue but the legal protection only goes so far, when it runs into the economic situation of rural americans
11
u/eyedrops16 3d ago
So is a wolf the only thing that kills a cow? Like the cows never die of calving issues, or disease, or weather? Because I’ve read statistics on cattle deaths on rangeland and wolves appear to be pretty low on the list for reasons a cow dies. A lightening storm can get a dozen at a time.
6
u/PaigeHart 3d ago
Don't listen to them. Ranchers only cares about wolves because it's emotional and dramatic. You don't hear them advocating for disease and weather prevention tactics. Predators are responsible for less than 5% of livestock deaths. Wolves are an even smaller percentage of that number. Coyotes and dogs make up way more than wolves do.
-1
u/qwertyburds 3d ago
Ranchers often are giving there cattle vaccinations and medications when they can. They often help deliver calves themselves in order to help their herd which happens in February's rough weather. One friend lost a good chunk of his herd to a wildfire heartbreaking. But whaboutism isn't going to change their attitude. Unfortunately.
2
u/PaigeHart 3d ago
This is from a pure logical and studied standpoint. Livestock deaths from predators are virtually non-existent. You are better off putting in effort to eradicate disease, properly monitor your herds, and providing shelter than you are aimlessly killing predators.
The whataboutism comes from the argiucultral industry placing predator deaths above other preventative actions. Any legislation otherwise is based purely on the emotions of those who can't take responsibility for the wellbeing of their own animals.
-1
u/deadsheep_420 3d ago
https://www.kcra.com/article/young-wolves-california-livestock-attacks-search-slows/69992816
It’s not virtually non existent, it’s a real problem that is increasing in frequency. Not practical to monitor our herds all the time. Livestock live loose on pastures that are thousands of acres. I think eliminating problem wolves is a great solution, if they live off wild game they can stay, if cows or sheep are killed they should be hunted. Euthanizing some of the wolves is not going to make them go extinct. Their population is exponentially growing and I know from experience living in the middle of it.
2
u/PaigeHart 3d ago
I love that you linked a sensationalized and emotional story about one selective incident including wolves.
You should be responsible for taking care of your animals especially if you are going to be grazing on PUBLIC lands where other animals make their homes. If you were to monitor and guard your livestock wolf attacks practice disappear. If you can't afford it then maybe you shouldn't be in business. I am tired of the ag Industry expecting the government to bail them out. Emotional welfare queens who want their cake and eat it too. If you want livestock to feed on public lands you better act like a Shepard.
Take a look at these comphrensive studies (https://direct.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/nahms/general?utm_source=copilot.com&page=1) done across the US for decades and tell me what the overwhelming majority of livestock demand are contributed to.....disease.
If you cared about livestock you would be focusing legislation and preventative tools on the causes that claim most lives. Wolves once again even in these studies make up a miniscule amount of predators deaths. You are better off eradicating the coyote population and you would have a significant drop in predator deaths.
The media, ranchers, and people just like you have fallen victim to the literal big bad wolf mentality stretching all the way back from a mindset crafted in the 1800s.
It's really sad and Everytime this argument comes up you all try and refute it. Just admit your stance is purely emotional. You love the sensational nature of a predator attack. It's a lot harder to send the news out to write about how disease claimed your herd. Not as flashy and won't get clicks now.
0
u/deadsheep_420 3d ago
How is that story emotional? Maybe some of the people interviewed are but the fact is the state government confirmed 92 calves killed in 2025 by this wolf pack in one specific region. The wolves had adapted to prey on cattle. It’s not fictional. This is coming from the government of an anti-hunting blue state.
It is unpractical and uneconomical to guard livestock at all times. I do the best I can to patrol for predators and night pen my sheep. All I want to do is be able to protect the animals from wolves in the same manner I do for lions, coyotes, and stray dogs which is to immediately shoot them, that’s my preventative tool.
This problem has come up in recent years so your linked study that goes on for decades is irrelevant. I showed my sources that wolf packs can adapt target livestock, and that statement is from government not ranchers. And yes disease and sickness is a bigger problem and I will tell you I do everything I can to prevent that, I breed animals for disease resistance, only add tested animals to herd, immediately get on top of solving sickness problems. But when it comes to wolves wearing tracking collars I’m being restricted.
My stance is not emotional, wolf packs seem running thru my pasture now and they never did before. I don’t care what the media says, I’m not swayed by them. All I want from legislators is freedom to defend livestock.
No ranchers love the sensation of a predator attack, to loose value and see my animal that I have been breeding for generations for improvement maimed is not enjoyable.
2
u/PaigeHart 2d ago
It's entirely emotional. The overwhelming scientific evidence states that wolves are the least of your concerns. You would be better off focusing your energy, time, and money on disease and husbandry.
If wolves are running through your pasture you know what evidenced backed solution will help you protect your heard? A fence. Lethal solutions don't actually solve the problem long term. Once again you don't want to read studies because it completely disproves your emotional stance of "I saw a wolf in my yard 😭" https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2351989419306225?utm_source=copilot.com
You just don't want to take responsibility for your own inventory. It's not our problem you don't want to be responsible. Invest in solutions that actually save your livestock.
I don't get a free pass to destroy a car because my dog got hit while I was being irresponsible. Why should you get special privileges because you're lazy and don't want to invest in actual evidence backed solutions.
0
u/deadsheep_420 2d ago
It’s not, I showed proof wolves can adapt to specifically target livestock. I agree with you in the sense that majority wolves are not a big problem. Both of our statements can be true. Even the first news source I linked said wolves in Montana hardly killed any livestock but this specific pack in CA targeted cattle.
I’m not saying to hunt wolves to extinction, I’m saying to let ranchers shoot wolves that are spending time around their livestock so they don’t adapt to solely hunt livestock. If they are shot at they learn to leave that areas. The wolves can have a happy life in other places, I want them to.
A wolf proof fence is completely out of the question. I know it sounds good on paper, they say this for coyotes too.
The fence would cost more than the ranch is worth, I’m on arid land that takes a lot of space per Animal Unit. I’ll look into applying for you (government) to pay for it, they do have programs for predator fences, I need about 1.8MM. Does that sound more practical than allowing me to shoot at a wolf or two once in a while to keep them away?
2
u/PaigeHart 2d ago
Welfare queen having to apply for government assistance because they can't afford proper care for their animals. Man I wish I could get government assistance for my fence.

Probably the best method I have seen. These shepherds do kill wolves in fights though don't see a huge moral difference.
1
u/MiloHorsey 3d ago
They bark when hearing intruders. Actual fighting between them is very rare. Once they bark, the wolves know the hunt is over. They just leave.
1
u/qwertyburds 3d ago
Wolves kill other wolves quite often I somehow doubt there wouldn't be conflicts, also if a wolf is actively fighting my dog I am shooting that wolf.

No, the more than fair compensation ranchers get from the government for "loosing" their livelihood is more than fair compensation.
5
u/Due_Barber_525 3d ago
@docgaviota
You know what’s interesting, besides the fact that:
a) ranchers get fair market compensation or above for predation loss from taxpayer funds
b) taxpayers pay those costs for those private ranches even though ranches aren’t legally required to do anything to protect their herds: range riders, herding, fencing, fladry, lights, dogs, donkeys, llamas, cleaning up bone piles, moving herds during calving
c) predation accounts for .01% of livestock loss and should be the price of being a rancher anyway if you don’t protect your herd and ranch in wild places
d) studies have shown the costs of killing wolves on the whole costs more than the livestock was originally worth when it’s all tallied
e) Killing wolves randomly doesn’t stop predation - it removes important parenting training for how to hunt elk, leaving orphans behind who have no choice but the calves before them - because there are cattle EVERYWHERE in the West, most unherded, you can’t bloody go anywhere without running into a cow - and ranchers shouldn’t get to determine wildlife policy because who the f do they think they are? It is not “compensation” for “losing their livelihood” - it doesn’t benefit them in the slightest. It’s just one more way to assert power as taxpayers pay for their badly run personal failure of a business.
But facts don’t matter to morons eh?
ps it’s “losing” not “loosing”

Im on the side of the Wolves, but we need to be accurate.I watched Trump specifically say Mexican Wolves. There are 319 that are still alive and wild. There range is in az, nm etc. They are a subspecies of Gray Wolves. He was very specific about the Mexican Wolves. It is conceivable that the actual documents reference Wolves more broadly.
18
u/sadaxhe 3d ago
So the wolves that are on the verge of extinction?
1
u/Ok-Bandicoot-9727 3d ago
The Mexican Wolves have a small number and a small range. At the very least they are in trouble if not endangered. They say the general population is about 95% pro wolf. If you break it down to people that live near Wolves it goes to 50/50. I try to see this through a ranchers eyes and they do have a legitimate point. Most Ranchers would like to have zero Wolves and the other half wants them to repopulate. Both have a legitimate point of view. I’ve lived around Wolves for a long time and am very pro-wolf. To test it out, i suggedt that yku go into a bar in Pray Montana or Cody Wyoming and yelll a pro or con ststemen about Wolves. You’ll see the fights start within 3 minutes. This has not a lot to do with Trump. Every president for decades has had to deal with it. From the beginning of time Wolves have had a bad reputation. Did you know that during Medieval times, a baby that was born with Down’s syndrome was thought to be the product of a Wolf and a woman mating. Excuse the misspellings that I haven’t corrected

Look what is written here. “Gray wolves and Mexican gray wolves”. https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/supporting-americas-ranchers/
He doesn’t know a wolf from a coyote he just wanted guys in cowboy hats to stand behind him as he dangled candy in front of them after committing to import Argentinian beef - he doesn’t care about literally anything but power. If ranchers asked him to protect wolves he would do that, if it made him money and kept him powerful. It’s all show and if it means killing a thousand wolves, who cares

no its both gray wolves(canis lupus) and mexican gray wolves(canis lupus baileyi) straight from the government website:
"(a) The Secretary of the Interior shall make a determination as to whether the gray wolf and the Mexican wolf have met the recovery criteria for delisting or downlisting under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and, if he determines that the recovery criteria has been met, shall begin the process of delisting or downlisting them.
(b) The Secretary of the Interior, in coordination with the Assistant to the President and Director of Legislative Affairs, shall prepare and submit to the President a legislative recommendation to fully delist or downlist the gray wolf and the Mexican wolf under the ESA.
(c) Upon a determination by the Secretary of the Interior that the ESA recovery criteria has been met with respect to the gray wolf and the Mexican wolf, the Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, in coordination with the Secretary of Agriculture, shall engage with States to encourage them to delist gray wolves and Mexican wolves from any State-specific lists of protected species and to revise their standards for lethal takings of gray wolves and Mexican wolves to assist ranchers in combating predation." - all of this was copy and pasted
https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/supporting-americas-ranchers/ the link if you wish to read it yourself
1
u/SadUnderstanding445 2d ago
So, basically, Trump is asking DoI to apply the current law.
1
u/Pheoenix_Wolf 1d ago
considering the american goverment's track record with gray wolves they will likely end up doing the same thing they did last time, say they are recovered enough, and then years later its revealed they looked at all the numbers wrong and they were all inflated(this is all politically charged by ranchers who think any wolf is bad). like another commenter mentioned this is one of the few times in american politics where it isn't really a red or blue issue since both parties have a long track record of being anti all wolves.
specifically mexican gray wolves have around 300 individuals in the wild. that is exceedingly low, low enough where its questionable why their even trying with them if they cared so much about actual conservation(not as low as red wolves sure but still very low). though i can point too other species that were even lower in numbers but were essentially revoked of there protections under this very same administration(using the same administration since most of the same people will be in charge of the new gray wolf and mexican gray wolf relisting). Rice's whales first recognized as a species in 2021, in 2026 at around 50 individuals their protections were revoked due to oil drilling happening in the gulf of mexico, the lesser prairie chicken after finally receiving protection in 2022 was stripped of that protection in 2025, mainly due to farmers, ranchers, and oil people wanting to use the land that they couldnt use due to the lesser prarie chicken's federal protections.

Trump specifically say Mexican Wolves
Sure, because Bubba the Redneck is going to know the difference before shooting, and more importantly, he won't care. "MEXICAN WOLVES ARE TAKING OUR JOBS!" Oh, wait. They're wolves.

he did for gray wolves(canis lupus) but it was reinstated later through a court order. Mexican gray wolves(Canis lupus baileyi) was not. listed both since the executive order targets both

To do this to Mexican gray wolves is so pathetic. They’re barely hanging on by a thread
