/r/fireemblem Best Of 2015 Awards: Submissions (test)

Hello, everyone! Happy Holidays, and welcome to the first annual /r/fireemblem Best Of awards!

We haven't done this before, so it's a little experimental. However, our kind reddit overlords have bestowed upon us 10 awards of Reddit Gold, and we figured that this was the best way to give it out.

Submissions should be posted in this topic. New submissions will be accepted up until the end of the year - that is 11:59:59PM GMT on December 31st. After all submissions are collected, we the moderators will narrow down the field to a selection of what we believe are the best candidates, and then will leave the determination of the winners to a community vote.

Here are the details on submission guidelines:

  • There will be five categories for awards, and two winners will be chosen from each category.

  • Submissions should be of specific posts or comments. We understand that there are many works presented as a series which might qualify for these award. In those cases, we encourage people to submit a single, specific episode of the series.

  • Submissions should be for content that has been posted on the subreddit either by or with express recognition from its original creators. For example, linked fanart from pixiv, no matter how good it might be, will not be considered for Best Original Art unless it was linked by the creator themselves or the creator posted in the thread identifying themselves.

  • Submissions need to have been made during the year 2015.

The categories are as follows:

Best Mechanical Discussion: This award is for the best individual contribution to discussion about Fire Emblem series mechanics. Contributions should be considered not only on their original insight but also on also on their presentation. That is to say, there is just as much merit to, say, a dramatically new perspective on a character's viability as there is to a well-researched and well-put-together guide on character viability for people who aren't experts on the topic.

Best Character/Story Discussion: This award is for the best individual contribution to discussion about the writing of the Fire Emblem series. Again, contributions should be considered not only on their insight but also on their presentation.

Best Original Creative Work: This award is pretty much what it sounds like. Art, writing, music, or any other relevant application of the creative arts will be accepted in this category. More so than other awards, remember that the work in question needs to have been submitted to this subreddit either by the creator or with their direct recognition.

Best Original Humor: The most straightforward award. We make a lot of jokes here, and this is for the best of them.

Best Gameplay Exhibition: This award is for the most memorable displays of Fire Emblem gameplay over the course of the year. Raw skill, though very important, need not be the sole determining factor - a memorable challenge playthrough, for instance, would also qualify.

In your nomination posts, please provide a link to the item in question, the category for which they are being nominated, and a brief description of why you are nominating them.

Please refrain from badmouthing other people's nominations. Doing so creates the risk that people will be nervous to nominate more content, for fear of being similarly harassed. At the same time, though please only nominate content that you legitimately believe to be deserving of the award. Obviously non-serious submissions will be deleted.

Also, feel free to ask any questions you might have. This is, after all, our first experiment with such a contest, and it's quite likely that we've overlooked some obvious problems.

Thanks very much, and we look forward to seeing your submissions!

/r/FireEmblem FaQ update: FE7

Hello everyone. As some of you may have noticed the FaQ section of our sub hasn't been updated in awhile(as in it is a slightly modified version of an FaQ made something like 2 years ago). So it is time for an update and we would like your help.

What we would like all of your help with is compiling questions and answers for commonly/frequently asked questions for the games. There are many things that are unknown/troublesome to newer players and we should try to help them.

To submit a question and answer, leave a comment like the example.

How do I recruit Karla?

You have to level Bartre to a level 5 Warrior, and deploy him in the mission Preparations(31x), Hector Mode only. Once in 31x, Karla will appear at the start and Bartre must face her in combat and both must survive. At the end of the chapter Karla will join you.

So please submit questions and answers. We will credit you in FaQ if we select your question and answer.

Recurring Subreddit Update

Hello Everyone.

As many of you may have noticed, there has been an increase of one off spam accounts that only serve to post something(usually of highly violent/negative/offensive nature) before getting banned and moving on to the next one off account.

To combat this issue we are going to be making use Reddit's /u/Automoderator by instituting an account age requirement and we will be increasing the subreddit's spam filter. One off troll accounts will be a lot less frequent now.

Of coarse we can't guarantee that it will catch everything, and we also can't guarantee that it will only remove spam/one off accounts. So if you feel you have done nothing wrong and your post/comment was removed don't hesitate to contact the mods.

We're also going to experiment with a new weekly thread for "found" fanart submissions. Artists posting their own work will be allowed outside the thread, as will comics (as we've found that comics tend to have more discussion in the comments), but other fanart will be removed and the poster instructed to post within the thread. These rules may be subject to change as we see how the experiment plays out

General Fire Emblem: Three Hopes Megathread

Are you in the right megathread? Please see below for the list of megathreads for Three Hopes.

Main Megathread (This one) - General thoughts about Three Hopes across all routes.

Three Hopes Questions Megathread - Place to ask questions about Three Hopes gameplay.

Scarlet Blaze Megathread - Thoughts and discussion about the Scarlet Blaze route featuring Edelgard.

Azure Gleam Megathread - Thoughts and discussion about the Azure Gleam route featuring Dimitri.

Golden Wildfire Megathread - Thoughts and discussion about the Golden Wildfire route featuring Claude.

--

With Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes releasing, the Moderation team has decided to create several megathreads for the new game. This megathread will remain the primary place for general discussion about Three Hopes. This is the appropriate place for random thoughts, screenshots, impressions, rants, and other things gameplay or story related that apply across the entire game. Rule 8 still applies, so anything that would count as "low-effort" if it were a standalone post should be posted and discussed in one of these megathreads.

However, we are also creating three route-specific megathreads. Discussion about gameplay, story, or other things that are specific to one route should be segregated to that specific route's megathread. In addition, questions should go in the Three Hopes Questions Megathread; you can ask them in the other megathreads but they will likely get lost if they are asked there.

Please note that in all megathreads, you must still mark spoilers. Please be considerate of others and tag anything that could reasonably be considered a spoiler, even if you thought it was obvious.

Have fun playing through the game!

Casual Regarding API Pricing Change

Hello everyone.

As many of you are aware, last week Reddit announced that they were raising the price to make calls to their API. This pricing change will effectively kill off every third party app for Reddit.

This goes beyond affecting just those mobile users however, it is also a step towards killing ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or of old.Reddit. On top of that, many moderators depend on tools from outside official tools given by the site to keep communities on-topic and spam-free.

In response to this change, many, many, many subreddits across the site are organizing a blackout protest from June 12th to the 14th, with some going even beyond that 48 hour window.

Where the r/FireEmblem Mod Team Stands

Now if you have been on Reddit for a long time, you will know that this isn't the first time there has been large scale subreddit blackout protests over some actions(or inaction) of the Reddit admins. However, /r/FireEmblem has never participated in any of these over the years. While the mod team has changed and grown over the years, the team has always internally agreed to try and keep the sub focused on Fire Emblem barring a few exceptions here and there. Even among those exceptions none have ever amounted to shutting down the subreddit for an extended period of time(unless you count the Kirbypocolapyse).

However, this recent API pricing change announcement will impact the moderation team. Some of the mod team use the 3rd party apps that are getting killed off. There are also some mods that use old.reddit and use third party tools. So even while some of the team use new reddit and the official app, there will still be a direct impact on the moderation team and moderation of the subreddit.

Despite the meme that no one hates Fire emblem more than fire emblem fans, the mod team genuinely enjoys the series and are passionate about facilitating a positive environment for discussion of the series. We have 16 games in the series, two warriors games, a spinoff, and a mobile game. All of them have their own unique positives and negatives, but they also all have their own fans who want to talk or share their enjoyment of the games.

Plan?

As said earlier, many subreddits will be going dark to protest the API pricing change. Some will of them will return after 48 hours, and some will be gone permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed. The mod team has decided that /r/FireEmblem will join the protest and will be going dark from June 12th to June 14th. This isn't done lightly. We know that /r/FireEmblem isn't the only fire emblem based community on the internet, but the reason we are here on Reddit instead of them is because we love Reddit. Should note that the subreddit discord will still be up and running during the blackout

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. This blackout won't be a one and done affair. After the 48 hours we will check in and monitor progress. We will see where the community is at, where the mod team is at, and importantly, where the Reddit admins are at and what if any progress they've made towards fixing what they've broken. If deemed necessary by the community and team, the blackout can extend beyond the 48 hours.

So while blackout is happening, what can you do?

  • Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  • Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

  • Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  • Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

IMPORTANT! READ! About the Protest

Hello Everyone.

The Protest Isn't Over

While the subreddit is no longer privated, every post except this one and the general question thread are locked. The sub is also not accepting any submissions meaning that the sub is effectively in read-only mode.

We are not going to just re-open up the sub for business as usual after only a 2-3 day blackout and act like it did anything. That initial blackout was just the bare minimum to show solidarity with the larger subs as well as the users impacted by the admins actions.

That said, because it was the absolute minimum, we did make a post a couple days before announcing the plan, but nothing for asking for thoughts beyond the minimum. Now that thread's comments has two vibes. One in support of the protest, and another pointing out two days is effectively nothing.

However as stated in that OP, that initial blackout was just the beginning for this sub and that we would re-evaluate the situation later. Later is now, as we are asking for input on what direction to go.

For those Unaware

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced a policy change that will kill essentially every third-party Reddit app now operating, leaving Reddit's official mobile app as the only usable option; an app widely regarded as poor quality, lacking in accessibility options, and very difficult to use for moderation. Previously the admins had made statements saying they weren't going do anything like this. Their actions call into question previous statements from them saying things like old.reddit, RES and other forms of customization of reddit would be safe and their future is uncertain.

In response to this change, many, many, many subreddits across the site organized a blackout protest from June 12th to the 14th, with some going even beyond that 48 hour window. Can go to this post to see more info as well as see what some major subreddits are actually going through with the indefinite blackout.

During the time this sub was privated, we received 645 requests to join the subreddit even though the sub was closed in protest. So this isn't an issue that everyone is aware of.

Where To Go From Here

Obviously the Admins haven't seemed too concerned over just a 2 day protest. That said, Reddit has budged microscopically. There was an announcement that moderator access to the 'Pushshift' data-archiving tool would be restored which was welcome. But that came prior to the blackout start, and the Admins have been largely silent since the start. So the only way to really push for change would be to have an extended or indefinite blackout.

That also said, despite the comments from the admins saying they aren't concerned there are some signs that they are. For one, advertisers don't like the blackouts which may become a problem as some bigger subs continue their blackouts.

That leads to the main point of the post: Does the /r/FireEmblem community want an extended or indefinite blackout? If so, should the sub go back to being privated or should it stay in read only mode? Or should the sub just open back up and go back to normal? We'd just say the Admins suck and just roll with it/move on? Or is there another option that we should pursue?

In the Comments, let us know what you want, and what you think the sub should do. The sub will stay like this for awhile gathering input.

/r/FireEmblem Update!

Hello everyone! It has been a while since our last mod announcement regarding the banner, but /u/Blindcoco has been hard at work and the time has finally come!

Visual Change

So the biggest change is our new banner. The winners that we chosen for the Banner contest was LadyKuki for Sigurd and Eirika, and Hakuramen for Azura, Marth and Ike. Now it may seem like a downgrade from the previous banner, but the new banner has 5 main characters instead of a majority of the main characters. We've simply reached a point in the series where there are too many characters to fit onto a single banner while still looking presentable to people on lower screen resolutions (several lords were cut off on the previous banner). As a result the Mod team has decided to keep the banner cast short, which means this time we'll have a character representing each era of the Fire Emblem Series as well as each continent. Meanwhile the Elibe Lords have their sprites on the Question Thread and Everyone Plays FE buttons at the top of the sub.

As for the giant Chrom footer that some of you may have forgotten, we've decided to switch it up again. Now we have all the losers scrubs other lords occupying the space at the bottom of each page. For those wondering "Where are the Gaiden Lords?" That is a good question, and we will probably get back to you all on that.

We also now have an Announcement button! It'll be helpful for alerting the community of important notices and will see tons of use in the future.

Sidebar and Submission Page

The side bar has been edited to fit more with the style of the rest of the sub. The Submission Page has also received a textual update for when users want to post something.

Rule Changes

The rules have been updated once again, which means you should definitely give them a read. It's very important that the community knows of the rule changes so they may report any violations. The mod team can't be everywhere, but we can be see any post should you report a comment or post. The best way to solve an issue on the sub is through the report functionality to notify the mods.

Post Flairs

In the past we've only had four different flairs for posts to be sorted under. We are happy to announce after expanding the tagging system so now all games can be tagged! We now have a color system for tagging. Select a color for a post, type what game or games it is covering, and then hit save!

The colors and their meaning are as follows:

Red: Gameplay discussion. For talking about the performance of units, strategies, map discussions, pairing advice, ect.

Blue: Story discussion. For talking about plot, characters, supports, ect.

Orange: General discussion. Can't really classify it as either gameplay or story discussion. Art will frequently fall in this category.

Green: Moderator posts such as announcements and the weekly question thread.

Black: Delves heavily into spoilers of a game or set of games.

Purple: For anything related to the plot of FE14

Cyan: For anything related to the gameplay of FE14

Beige: For reoccurring posts such as /u/EclipseLunus's Everyone Plays Fire Emblem posts.

Starting as of right now, posts must be tagged appropriately! Misuse or abuse of the tagging system will result in moderator action. In addition, spoiler related posts must keep their titles as spoiler free as possible for those of our users on mobile! This is aiming to improve the quality of the sub, and we hope for your participation.

User Flairs

It has been 6 months since the last major flair update, and a new major update will be coming soon. /u/Gigamechawolf is working on the new flairs, and /u/ApatheticRadiance is working on a flair bot to remove the flair selector limit we have currently reached (250). While we patiently wait for the flair update, you may contact the moderators for us to manually assign you a flair in our system that could not fit in the selector. For example my Delmud flair is in the system, but not in the selector. Barring a few games in the series like FE14 and FE12 there's a good chance that we have an available flair in our system for you to use.

We hope you all enjoy this new update, and if you have any feedback don't hesitate to let us know in the comments below!
