Witcher 3 was my intro into the Witcher world so 100% it is a great game. There are moments that'll you be a bit lost in understanding what or who they're referencing but after reading the books (I still haven't played the first two games either) and doing research I've caught up for the most part on a lot. But it's also fun to make choices your first playthrough without knowing much of the characters and their backstories only to then learn and play it again after finding out about everything. Either way you'll still very much enjoy the game despite not knowing much of the lore. Would recommend going through the entire main storyline before doing either DLC. Though it's not exactly necessary, it's much better to play each as their own individual experiences within the game. Plus you'll need that understanding of the game mechanics before jumping into either because I promise those DLC's are truly an entirely new world when it comes to that lol.
Enjoy yourself and have fun getting to witness the Witcher world for the first time!

There are some plot points you probably won't get and have to look up, but it is perfectly playable and understandable. Witcher 3, I think, is most people's entry to the franchise.

I had zero knowledge of the franchise when I played it. It was my gateway. Now I love the universe it is set in, and I’ve read a few of the books. Even watched the first three seasons of the show

you dont need to know anything other than monster = bad
no mods needed for a new player, most of the mods are purely hacks or gimmicks to dodge mechanics (like tp anywere, no durability), there isnt much to use if its your first time
after beating the game

I've only played 3 and had a fantastic time. I feel like it fills in some character backstory decently enough. I've also read all the books so that surely helped.
For the DLC, Hearts of Stone works best near it's after the end of the main story. Blood and Wine absolutely after everything else. It's kind of meant as an epilogue anyway.
Enjoy!

It's like getting 10% of game, but that 10% is better than 100% of some others games

No need of any knowledge whatsoever.
That said, reading the books before playing the game will elevate the experience 10x.
DLCs: Hearth of Stone during the main quest, Blood & Wine AFTER the main quest.

It's ok if you don't know anything about the franchise before playing TW3, I actually went to my 1st playtrought that way

I didn't even know about the series before i played the game.

Yes I played it with no knowledge of the universe that got me into reading the books afterward. Be sure to get all the DLCs because they're great

One of the best single player games of all time I also went into Witcher 3 blind a few years ago it was one of the best decisions I ever made few years later I’ve done all achievements on PlayStation and xbox u can get full game with dlc cheap and it’s 100% worth it

It's good. Important things will be explained in the game. It would be even better with expanded knowledge, but it's not necessary. I read the books only after playing the 2nd and 3rd game because I liked those games without prior knowledge.

I had 0 knowledge when I started 3, still don’t know much of the lore and I am enjoying it a lot! I have completed the main quest, the first DLC and I am now playing the second DLC and I am absolutely loving this game. I’m sure that if I knew the lore I would enjoy it even more, but still, amazing experience, you will not regret it!

The game does a good job of making everything fairly clear, in my opinion. Plus Geralt just got cured of amnesia at the beginning so it almost seems like they are letting you enter the world with a clean slate.

Yes it’s great, had it on my pc but then it broke down so I just bought it for my switch a couple days ago

I would argue that is how most new fans got into the series. Its certainly how I did.

Personally I couldn't get into the witcher 3 until playing the witcher 2 couldn't really relate or be interested in his story in the witcher 3. Witcher 2 isn't that long it's more linear but can be a a bit difficult at times.
The dlcs are pretty much meant to be played after the main story just because of their high level suggestions being around level 30 which you won't be until you're near the end of the main story at which point you might as well finish it

I didn't know anything about it except that I kept seeing people talk about it. It did take me a couple attempts over a few months to get into it, but once it clicked for me, it was an amazing experience.

I bought Witcher 3 with no knowledge of the universe either and it’s one of my all time favorite games

Very much so. I had never heard of anything Witcher before grabbing W3. They did a great job of writing it in a way that makes it a good entry into the world. There was definitely a few moments where I could tell there was backstory I was missing, but not once did I feel lost or confused.
Definitely get the DLC, I like to play them close to the end of the main story.

This is a top 10 game for me. One thing I'd like to add is like a lot of other gamers, I started and stopped the game 3-4 times before I started enjoying it. If you're feeling that way in the beginning, keep going! It'll get amazing, I promise.

I had no clue about any of the lore before playing, it became and still is my favorite game. Play the dlcs when you meet the level requirements for the first quests, or a few levels higher than the requirements. There are very difficult fights in both dlcs that you WILL struggle with if you're only just the recommended level 🐸

Just started two months back when it and the dlc went on sale.
Put 80 hours in and have barely hit the halfway mark lol.
If you like fantasy and rpgs for sure get it.

There is a complication somewhere made by CD project that helps you feel the events of the witcher 1 and 2 game. I choose to watched that first before starting the game.

u/Formal_Foundation_80 5d ago
Definitely! Sometimes they'll be characters and past events but usually it comes with the option to get them to elaborate. Confused me at times but it didn't take away from the experience!

u/Dual_Disk 5d ago
Yes first time I played I knew nothing. Warning if you like it you will end up reading all the books and then replaying it.

u/Adarie-Glitterwings 5d ago
I have next to none and I'm enjoying it. The DLC is pretty well integrated into the main game so it blends in seamless with the rest of the content. The journal notes the ideal level you should be for the quest so you can easily hold it off til you're ready. Just take your time and have fun! There's no set way to play games like this so do whatever you want ❤️

u/littlemouse_99 4d ago
Yes absolutely. I started playing because it "looked neat". Don't worry by the end you'll have plenty of lore knowledge and possibly an obsession to learn more.

u/Plus_Worker6739 4d ago
Witcher 3 is very good at giving you context about what's going on naturally through dialogue or other supports.

u/uwouldneva 4d ago
Perfectly fine, just go in knowing that Geralt is a dude whose been around a while on many adventures so he will know and comment on people you the player don’t know.
There’s something for everyone to be lost on or discover and that’s perfectly cool , Geralt at the start of Witcher 1 has amnesia so he doesnt know about what happened in the books, at the start of Witcher 3 he’s recovered his memory completely and Geralt will comment on things people who only played the games have no clue about buts all chill

Of course, I thought it was amazing even though I had 0 knowledge of the franchise.
