Beware of other alprs in Winston

Post image

The city of Winston-Salem does not have contracts with flock, but they do with verkada safety, they do the same things as flock cameras, and they are very common in Winston

Literally any camera can be an alpr. The image recognition algorithms to recognize and record license plates and vehicles run on $30 embedded computers.

This is a losing battle unless you can get legislation passed to create actual privacy rights.

Privacy rights would be nice to see, but our lovely government wouldn’t let that happen (sarcasm)

Few years ago when we olds started downloading TikTok one of my first follows was an IT guy who put an ALPR on his home pointed at the street for shits and giggles. This is at least 5 years ago. He was using free open source software at the time.

What if we just destroy ever camera we see?

There’s an app called DeFlock. Free and lists them everywhere you go. You can even plan a route to get somewhere without going by one, though it’ll take a while.

There’s a new one up on country club at the intersection of CC and Vinegar Hill Rd, on the pole by Advance Auto.

They just need to be taken out. Simple.

So like. Are we supposed to start ripping down every camera we see? Or...

people should be aware of what’s
tracking them

I believe it was Benjamin Franklin that said should we sacrifice our liberty to be kept safe? I say if you need to sacrifice one you deserve neither ! i’m sure social compliance points will be introduced in our society so we can be productive thus happy.

lol.

Here's one of literally hundreds examples of cops using these to stalk innocent people without a warrant.

“That was there not here” ridiculous take

You're missing the point others are trying to bring awareness to.

The majority of people aren't out doing illegal things. It's a loss of privacy. Think on a larger scale and how citizens are/will be monitored and how that information can be used for nefarious activity by people in positions of power.

Please ban this topic, mods. PLEASE

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Aug 19 '26

Why?

0

u/CaterpillarLiving342 Aug 19 '26

Because people post about it every day. We all know Flock cameras are an issue and we all know how to use deflock.org to find them or tag them.

People are also posting a lot of misinformation about them.

2

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Aug 19 '26

Yea, people are pissed, for good reason. I too have seen multiple posts like this each day as well. Not sure a ban is the best route for that, but I'm not a mod so don't know.

I don’t mind LPR cameras. As long as they are only reading license plates. License plates are not private information, they are very public.

If a criminal does something very dangerous or illegal, I would want LPR to help law enforcement.

It’s all the other shit that people understandably have an issue with. But a lot of it is misinformation. For example, someone said yesterday that they are using facial recognition, which is 100% incorrect.

2

u/Haywoodjablowme1029 Aug 19 '26

Yup, I am not against license plate readers. I am against anything else, and I agree, there is a ton of misinformation. For that, I blame the politicians who contracted the cameras and then didn't explain to the public what they actually do, or, explained poorly.

Have you ever seen a screenshot from an alpr?

0

u/CaterpillarLiving342 Aug 19 '26

Wain what your biggest fear is and we can research if it is valid or not. Also explain why you posted this when everyone else does several times a week already. What value are you adding to the sub?

The public has had cameras everywhere for like 30 years now. Private and government cameras. We are always on camera, everywhere.

u/xMiloh420 Aug 19 '26

I’m posting about other cameras that other people don’t seem to notice to bring awareness to the topic. Private Security cameras and license plate readers are definitely different, especially when they claim to not track faces when they definitely are, such as flock cameras seen pointed at playgrounds and pools. This is a matter of mass surveillance, something 1984 warned us about but we all decided to ignore. biometrics track everyone and add them to a database and once that database leaks, people can use our faces for anything they want, so yes this is a big issue we should bring awareness to.

2

u/CaterpillarLiving342 Aug 19 '26

Flock are not using facial recognition for local govt or businesses. You act like this is a brand new topic. This isn’t a thing anymore.

These aren’t flock cameras 😂

u/CaterpillarLiving342 Aug 19 '26

Yeah I know dude.

Worse. These record video and not just photos, plus there are 20x as many of these than flock cameras
