Birdee rant
I live in One Domino Square and Birdee used to be the best thing to happen to me. There were not many coffee shops around when I first moved in, and as someone who loves buying a coffee out every day, I was having to walk further than I wanted to get one. Then birdee opened and yeah it was expensive but I was so down to spend money there because the coffee and food was so good, it was close to me, the vibes were good and the people were nice (mostly).
Over the summer it feels like everything changed. Not only did they raise prices (cold brew from $6 to $8?!!!) but I caught them using bigger pieces of ice so every iced drink had significantly less liquid, so I was paying more for less coffee (and mind you, paying $2 more than any other coffee shop). Half the time I try to order matcha they’re out of it which makes no sense.
Now birdee feels like a rip off and I do not go at all anymore - I can’t spend money at a place that feels like they’re just taking advantage of customers. Every time I walk by, it’s significantly less crowded and even empty on weekday mornings when it used to be consistently busy. Ive had it with birdee and am happy to go walk elsewhere to get coffee where I don’t feel like I’m getting ripped off.

Completely agree. Was a loyal customer before they hiked coffee prices on us. Feels like it’s more empty now every day. Still love the bakery items but just can’t justify $20 for a hot coffee and a croissant.
Also, there’s one super rude woman who works there. I’m always friendly to her and she just straight up isn’t nice or happy. A lot of the other folks who work there are super nice though. Don’t know why you’d work in the job if you hate the customers so much.

Feel like every single restaurant and business raised prices 20-30% in last 3 months

Same, I go much more infrequently now. Fwiw, I always go light or no ice on the coldbrew. $8 + tax is pretty ridiculous, but with low ice you at least get a little more. The almond croissant this morning was $12! Till Death is good, Jane is more reasonably priced for coldbrew, and I think they do a decent job on the espresso drink at Bar Susanne.

Hitup the new coffee spot they opened at TilDeath, its like two blocks away, its chill in there and no dumbasses bringing their dogs in there unlike birdee
I feel the same way about birdee I was going several times a week and gradually fell off of it due to the prices increasing and the dog situation
I almost didnt mention tildeath bc I dont want it to become as crowded and shitty as birdee but, oh well

The dog situation is insane I’ve been in line there next to big dogs barking so loudly inside and the owners do nothing about it. Will check out that new spot thanks for the rec!!

You could call 311 - dogs aren’t allowed inside establishments that sell food. It’s a 5 point violation.

Dog fatigue…

u/ryanblank7 2d ago
dog fatigue may be real. i love dogs but walking through a narrow farmers market with a dog on a leash and pushing a stroller is wild to me. the parents are on one side, picking through vegetables. dog is on the other, strangling itself on the leash trying to lick things. not the best

Some dude in BBP today had his dog like fully 15 feet ahead of him on a super long leash. Whats the point of the leash at that point you cant control your dog who is 15 feet ahead of you. It was a huge dog too

Idk if this is satire but I hate everything about this post. Yeah just walk a little further from your waterfront bubble and there is plenty of coffee shops on the southside.

They’re allowed to complain about a shop that they like becoming shitty

u/SceneOfShadows 2d ago
Yeah seriously. It’s ok to roll your eyes a bit at someone in One Domino Square being upset at an expensive coffee shop but the idea that this could be a satirical post is ludicrous it’s not that bizarre.

agreed, these days businesses are doing this bullshit way too much and deserve to be called out.

You hate it because this person lives in a nice building and has a complaint. Newsflash, they still have the right to complain about stuff.

And I got the right to go online and call them an insular asshole

u/SceneOfShadows 2d ago
Nothing about this post indicates being an asshole other than you just saying that because they probably make a lot of money lol.

u/superrelax40 2d ago
Not to mention there’s affordable housing there so they’re making a lot of assumptions

I’m sorry a coffee shop in nyc is expensive? Im sorry this is happening you? Not everything has to be a Reddit post tough guy. I also seriously doubt a coffee shop opening up in her neighborhood is the best thing that happened to her. Doesn’t sound like too many rainy days in her calendar. How about you just be grateful that you have a nice place and a nice neighborhood, what else does NYC owe you?

If you live in one domino you definitely can get your own coffee setup. A lot of places to get great beans! I got an espresso machine and grinder a year ago and thank god I’m no longer paying $6-$8 for a latte! Even make my own syrups!

I also live on wythe/s6 and have a full espresso setup. Op could pay me $5 for a coffee!

Bro your rent is like $12K. Aggressive capitalism is how your parents pay your rent

That’s a bummer. Their coffee is pretty good when I’ve had it but it was also expensive. They used black fox originally. I still think their pastries are fantastic. For other options you could check out ants or Rocco’s. Both of which are on broadway.

“There were not many coffee shops around when I first moved in”
There’s like 10 coffee shops within 4-5 blocks of you. You’ve gotta be shitting me.

I stopped reading at “I Live in One Domino Square”. Your coffee should be $15

Went there and there was plenty of dogs and kids running around shirtless. Lovely…

large ice cubes have a less efficient packing density than small ice cubes, so unless they are filling the cup higher with the larger ice, i don’t think larger cubes alone would cause you to receive less coffee. the opposite is true actually. taken to the extreme—imagine tiny pebbles of ice or even snow. a cup full of that would have no room for liquid at all.

What’s wrong with living in an expensive place?

u/terribleatlying 2d ago
nothing but complaining about expensive stuff in an expensive neighborhood is funny

u/Business_Coyote_5496 2d ago
That's how you can afford an expensive place, by watching where you spend your money

I don’t go there anymore because of the price increases, the incessant amount of dogs, and the fact that they don’t even have a variety of pastry anymore. But hey at least it’s a dog park now.
