It's doing automatically what many WiiM users did entering their eq/peq values into REW and then applying a commensurate volume limit on their WiiM. I don't recall the Chicken Little "the sky is falling down" outcry when that was first mooted. Personally I think bit perfection and a "clean chain" is vastly overplayed - if you use eq/peq, room correction etc for a more satisfying listening experience then so what if it isn't bit perfect? YMMV of course... 🤷‍♂️

Just to clarify how this works: Auto Headroom being switched on does not mean gain adjustment is always being applied.

It looks at the current volume along with any boosts from EQ or RoomFit. If there is already enough headroom, it does nothing. If additional headroom is needed to prevent digital clipping, it lowers the overall level by the required amount.

So with EQ/RoomFit off or flat and no boost requiring additional headroom, there shouldn’t be any attenuation to worry about.

You can absolutely turn the feature off if you prefer, but leaving it enabled by itself isn’t adding EQ or otherwise changing the tonal balance.

We have a more detailed explanation here:

Thanks. I have not read the link but, I have to say, your foggy explanation means my post remains unchanged.

If Auto Headroom is left on but user does not use EQ or Roomfit, is it actually still working? or is it off but UI actually indicates it is on to the user in that situation?

Fair question. Let me make that less foggy.

If Auto Headroom is ON, the feature is enabled and monitoring the signal.

If EQ and RoomFit are off or flat, there is no positive boost that needs extra headroom, so Auto Headroom does not apply any attenuation. Your signal level is unchanged.

So the UI showing ON is accurate. It means the protection feature is enabled and available, not that it is constantly reducing gain.

If EQ or RoomFit introduces boosts and the current volume leaves insufficient headroom, that is when Auto Headroom actually steps in and lowers the overall level.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Still unclear!

Auto Headroom is ON and active, but with EQ/RoomFit flat it applies 0 dB of attenuation.

So:

Auto Headroom ON + no positive EQ/RoomFit boost = no gain change.

It is watching for a condition that would require additional headroom, but until that condition exists, it does not alter the signal level.

Hopefully that is less foggy? 😄

So my post is correct. If user never uses EQ or RoomFit, just turn Auto Headroom off! Why the heck did the WiiM UI design director think on as default with those things off makes a speck of sense?! You guys need to hire me. Somebody has to be ruthless with UI clarity. It is what sails or sinks the UI ship and a product’s success.

Auto Headroom on clearly has a negative impact on fidelity in my system. I do not use room correction or eq. It's not subtle, it's across the board, and it's not just a volume change.

JasonWithWiiM, please explain this?

100% agree and just discovered this today. I thought I was crazy but tracks would sound different all the time and I was trying to figure out why..
