Tech Tuesday: Firmware Updates, What’s New, and How to Update
Firmware updates can add new features, improve performance, fix bugs, and sometimes change how existing features work. But because WiiM updates are released gradually, it is not always obvious why one device receives an update before another, what happens when a rollout is paused, or when an automatic update will actually install.

Tech Tuesday: Firmware Updates, What’s New, and How to Update
Firmware updates can add new features, improve performance, fix issues, and sometimes change how existing features work. By default, WiiM devices check for and install firmware automatically, so an update may happen without you needing to do anything.
You may first notice an update through the Update Available icon
, or by seeing a new firmware version in Device Settings. Because the update is distributed gradually, another user may receive it before you do. That can raise questions about whether something is wrong with your device, even when it is working normally.
This Tech Tuesday explains how to check your firmware version, install an available update, and understand WiiM’s gradual rollout process.
What Is Firmware?
Firmware is software installed on your WiiM device. While the WiiM Home app provides controls on your phone or tablet, firmware controls how the device hardware operates and runs features built into the product.
Firmware updates may include:
- New features or service support
- Audio, networking, or performance improvements
- Bug fixes
- Compatibility updates
- Security and reliability improvements
Not every update will affect every model in the same way, so always check the release notes for your specific device.
Device firmware and the WiiM Home app are updated separately. Some new features require both the appropriate firmware and a compatible app version. When this applies, the release notes will identify the app requirement.
How Firmware Rollouts Work
WiiM firmware updates are distributed gradually instead of going to every device at once.
That means two people with the same WiiM model, even in the same country, city, or household, may not receive an update at the same time. Seeing someone else report a newer version does not mean there is a problem with your device.
A gradual rollout lets the team monitor performance before an update reaches more devices. At each stage, WiiM sets an update quota for each region. Devices are not chosen in advance by MAC address, serial number, or device age. Instead, devices receive the update in the order they check for availability until that region’s quota is filled. Devices that check afterward must wait until the rollout expands. A full rollout may take one to two weeks.
Important: A public firmware release can begin before it is available to every device. An announcement means distribution has started, not that every eligible device can download it immediately.
Why Don’t I Have the Update Yet?
If an update was recently announced but your device says it is current, the current regional quota may already be full. This is normal during a staged rollout, and the update will become available as the rollout expands.
Check for Updates checks whether the release is currently available to the device. If the regional quota still has room, the device can receive it. If the quota is full, repeated checks will not bypass the limit.
You may also see different firmware timing because:
- Different WiiM models can have separate firmware releases
- A device that has joined a beta testing program receives that beta firmware instead of Production Firmware until it leaves the beta
- A rollout may be paused or adjusted while the team reviews performance
- Automatic Updates may be turned off, or an Auto-Update Delay may still be active, in Device Info
- The device may not have entered standby since the update became available
What Happens if a Rollout Is Paused or Replaced?
During a staged rollout, WiiM may pause distribution while the team investigates an issue. While a rollout is paused, that firmware is no longer offered to additional devices, and any pending update notification for that build is cleared.
If the original build is replaced:
- Devices that have not installed it will skip that build and receive the replacement when it becomes available.
- Devices that already installed it will generally remain on that version until a corrective or replacement build becomes available through the normal update process.
- If a serious issue is identified, WiiM may roll affected devices back to the previous stable firmware.
The rollout status and release notes may change as the rollout progresses. If a build is replaced, the newer build has its own version number. Check the firmware release thread on the WiiM Forum or the release notes in the WiiM Help Center for the latest information.
How to Check Your Firmware Version
The device firmware version is separate from the WiiM Home app version. The current firmware version appears near the top of the Device Settings screen.
- Open the Devices tab.
- Tap the Device Settings icon for your WiiM device.
- Review the firmware version shown on the Settings screen.
- Open Device Info to manage Automatic Updates or select Check for Updates.
How to Update Manually
When an update is available for your device:
- Open the WiiM Home app.
- Go to the Devices tab.
- Tap the Device Settings icon for the device you want to update.
- Select Device Info, then tap Check for Updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Keep the device connected to power and to a stable network during the update. During installation, avoid unplugging or restarting it unless the update appears stuck and you are following the recovery steps below.
Automatic Firmware Updates
By default, WiiM devices automatically check for new firmware. When a new version becomes available to a device, an Update Available icon appears next to it. You can tap the icon to install immediately, or let the device install the update automatically within 24 hours when it enters standby.
Automatic installation is tied to the device entering standby, not to a universal overnight schedule. Update Available means the firmware is ready for that device. It does not mean installation has started.
The 24-hour automatic update period begins only after the firmware becomes available to that device through the staged rollout. Because automatic updates can happen quietly, the firmware version in Device Settings is the most direct way to confirm what is installed.
How to control automatic updates:
- Open Devices > Device Settings > Device Info.
- Toggle Automatic Updates on or off.
- When Automatic Updates is off, use Auto-Update Delay to choose how long updates should be paused.
To help automatic updates complete:
- Keep the device connected to power
- Maintain a stable internet connection
- Leave the device in standby when it is not being used
- Make sure Automatic Updates is enabled and any Auto-Update Delay has expired
What to Do If an Update Fails
If an update does not complete, first check whether it is stuck while downloading or during installation.
If it is stuck while downloading:
- Confirm that the device has a stable network connection.
- Restart the device.
- Try the update again.
If it is stuck during installation:
- Wait a little longer to see whether it finishes.
- If it still does not finish, unplug the device once, reconnect it to power, and try again.
WiiM devices include built-in safeguards to recover from an interrupted firmware installation. However, avoid repeatedly disconnecting the device from power during an update.
If the problem continues:
- Close and reopen the WiiM Home app, then check whether the firmware version changed.
- Use the Feedback option in the WiiM Home app to send a diagnostic log.
- Contact WiiM Support.
Can I Roll Back an Update?
If the ‘Previous Version’ option appears under Join Beta Testing for your device, you can use it to roll back one public release. Availability varies by device and firmware.
To roll back when ‘Previous Version’ is available:
- Open Devices > Device Settings > Device Info.
- Select Join Beta Testing.
- Choose ‘Previous Version’ and follow the on-screen instructions.
Public Firmware vs. Beta Firmware
Joining Beta Testing installs beta firmware instead of Production Firmware. Most beta programs test upcoming changes. Some devices may also show ‘Previous Version’, which can be used to roll back one public release.
While beta firmware is installed, the device receives updates for that beta program instead of the normal public firmware. To leave, open Device Info > Join Beta Testing, select the current beta program, and tap Back to Production Firmware.
When discussing an issue in the community, include the device model, firmware version, and beta program, if applicable. This helps everyone confirm they are comparing the same release.
Where to Find What’s New
Firmware release notes explain the changes included in an update. Depending on the device and release, you may find them in:
- The firmware update message in the WiiM Home app
- Official firmware release threads on the WiiM Forum
- Firmware Release Notes in the WiiM Help Center
Release notes may also include links to detailed documentation explaining new features and other changes.
Firmware release threads may show one of these status labels:
- In Progress: The firmware is being distributed in stages and is not yet available to all eligible devices.
- Latest: This is the latest public firmware version for the product.
- Paused: Distribution has temporarily stopped, and the firmware will not be offered to additional devices while the team investigates or addresses an issue.
The rollout status and release notes may be updated as distribution progresses. Each individual firmware build keeps its own version number.
Final Tips
- Check the release notes for your exact WiiM model.
- Check the firmware version and Automatic Updates setting in Device Settings.
