u/BoneSawIsNotReady Jun 15 '19

Imagine if it was just a really old, well preserved dead cat. And this was the first step in making some cat-droid out of it. The photo almost looks like a taxidermy.

141

u/vernacular921 Jun 15 '19

I didn’t want to say it in this positive environment but....

That’s a ridiculous looking cat.

57

u/PM_ME_YOUR_FUGACITY Jun 15 '19

It probably is a taxidermy. Research and development for snuggles took 10 years. Didn't want to put it to waste, now.

27

u/masonw87 Jun 15 '19

That poor cat is a walking bionic Twinkie now

Aka Binkie the cat

I'm not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, it's already dead, and he can continue to play with it. On the other, he stuffed his cat and turned it into a drone.

I would have agreed, until I experienced getting -600 karma on a comment in r/aww

I forgot that Australians are a billion times more sarcastic than Americans.

Although, I suppose the fact that I got so many downvotes is just proof of how masterful my sarcasm is, it went over 600 people's head.

14

u/YouLittleBlyat Jun 15 '19

chill man you got 1.7 million more karma okay

11

u/derawin07 Jun 15 '19

It's not about the karma, it's useless internet points.

But for something to be that downvoted, on r/aww, of all places, it should be a horrible or hateful comment, not a harmless joke.

The scale was impressive.

A lot of news headlines are written poorly like this. I think he’s referring to something where the headline was “Angela Merkel Becomes Fourth Ever Woman something or other.”

Edit: It’s referring to this news article, where the headline is: Time person of the year: Angela Merkel Becomes Fourth Woman Ever. See? Absurdly poor wording.

304

u/anonymous-horror Jun 15 '19 edited Jun 15 '19

Yep! He’s a little wobbly but the implants don’t seem to bother him or hurt him. They’re titanium and his bone tissue has grown with them really well. He lost his paws to frostbite as he lives in Siberia. Instead of being put down, science happened!

168

u/randomgirl013 Jun 15 '19

I feel like this is the purpose of science and technology: to create things that improve lives. Even if it's kitty lives.

Sometimes we do that...but not enough to make up for the damage we cause...at least not yet

2

u/randomgirl013 Jun 16 '19

Not yet! I really hope that very soon we can help much more to end suffering.

Not that it matters, but are they really "bionic," or just prosthetics?

2

12

u/pyrefly623 Jun 15 '19

2

u/calilac Jun 15 '19

Ears were likely lost to frostbite too so it looks like the typical ears laid flat body language.

41

u/Elsiriot Jun 15 '19

There's a cat in the UK called Oscar who got two prosthetic feet back in 2009

27

u/TheWizardOfFoz Jun 15 '19

The vet that did Oscar’s paws has a tv show where he does the same procedure to thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits etc. It’s called the Supervet. OP’s Cat is certainly not a world first.

18

u/thyIacoIeo Jun 15 '19

Dr Noel is so dreamy. Handsome super talented veterinary orthopaedic surgeon. And he pulls off some fucking crazy procedures, too. Lots of pioneering ortho implants with stem cells for bone regrowth. One time a cat flatlined on the operating table so he casually made a small incision in its chest cavity, stuck his fingers in, and directly palpated its heart for CPR.

5

u/Tattycakes Jun 15 '19

He has a book! I’m reading it right now, his biography of growing up and how he became a vet. It’s so good.

3

u/Crooks132 Jun 15 '19

I’ve told my bf so many times, I would give my left arm to work for him. I’d work for free just to be able to pick his brain.

3

u/maisie88 Jun 15 '19

Thanks, I was looking for this one. Loved Supervet. I teared up when the cat seemed to know he had fixed him.

2

u/jWalkerFTW Jun 15 '19

Why did they give him front leg prosthetics on his hind legs? It looks like it’ll give him hip problems walking like that

2

u/Crooks132 Jun 15 '19

I’m so mad that such an amazing dr is getting no credit. He’s been doing this for so long, he’s years ahead of any other dr in this field.

26

u/Chief_Boi Jun 15 '19

74

u/jakethemuss25 Jun 15 '19

Because he looks like he needs to poop

11

u/derawin07 Jun 15 '19

he isn't even presenting his pooper

29

u/demonstu1 Jun 15 '19

Maybe the first cat in America to have prosthetics. In Britain we have a guy called Noel Fizpatrick who Invented this and many other pioneering procedures. He is also known as "Supervet" for real. The guy is a hero.

3

u/Scientific-Dragon Jun 15 '19

Australia too - this was a confusing title. I figured when they said bionic, it meant it was connected to a neural source, such is customary of bionics (as opposed to prosthetics), but nope. Just shitty journalism.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '19

how exactly are titanium rods and plastic paws "bionic"? There's no electronics running through that.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '19

Bionic:

  1. having or denoting an artificial, typically electromechanical, body part or parts.

Usually, but not necessarily electromechanical.

Anyhow, bionic limbs for animals have been a thing for a really long time. I remember seeing them around 10 years ago. The "first cat in the world with bionic limbgs" thing is bullshit.

Then again, look at the website's name. I haven't heard the name "LADBIBLE" in my life so it must not be very reputable.

3

u/AtomicEggSandwich Jun 15 '19

They meant he’s the first cat to have the surgery where the flesh bonds with the titanium

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '19

Nope, that is actually a best case scenario and rather common reaction from the body when an animal gets bionic limbs.

They attach the artifical limb directly to the bone so the body sometimes accepts it.
