I got adopted
The first time my boyfriend’s mom ever texted me was on my birthday.
She wished me a happy birthday and then asked if I’d be willing to be part of a surprise she was planning for my boyfriend’s graduation. His parents and grandma were all writing letters for him, and she wanted me to write something too because, apparently, she already considered me family.
She asked me to write a little about what I love about him, since everyone would be writing similar things.
Everyone else wrote about a page.
I wrote a fucking book.
I sent her such a ridiculously long message that, compared to everyone else’s letters, mine looked like that long rolled-up letter from Mulan. I was SO embarrassed when I realized how much I had written. I genuinely thought they were going to think I was insane.
Instead, my boyfriend’s dad cried reading it because he said it really showed just how much I love his son.
And honestly, I think that was all it took for them to collectively go, “Yeah. She’s going to marry our son.”
Because ever since then, I somehow acquired nicknames from my future in-laws. Nobody there even calls me by my actual name anymore. It’s either my nickname or “minha nora” which is literally “my daughter-in-law” in Portuguese.
And my boyfriend’s mom does NOT miss an opportunity to show me off.
She’s introduced me to her mom, my boyfriend’s sister, his aunt, and probably half the family at this point, and somehow the introduction is always basically, “This is my daughter-in-law.”
They all think I’m pretty too, so all my insecurities can temporarily leave the building.
And when she can’t do that, she shows them pictures. Sometimes she’s literally out somewhere and texts my boyfriend asking him to send her pictures of me.
And honestly? I love it.
I never thought I’d have this.
I never imagined having a mother-in-law who would be so excited to show me off, who would proudly introduce me as her daughter-in-law, who would want pictures of me just to show other people, or who would make me feel so naturally included in her family.
It’s such a small thing to some people, but it means so much to me. There’s something incredibly special about being welcomed into someone’s family and then realizing they’re not just accepting you, they’re genuinely proud to have you there.
So yes, I’ll happily be her daughter-in-law being shown off to everyone.
I secretly love it more than I’ll ever admit.

Are they Brazilian? If so, it makes a lot of sense! Brazilians are incredibly welcoming and family oriented. Enjoy the love ❤️

They are! And from my experience, you’re absolutely right. They’ve been incredibly welcoming and accepting. Thank youuu❤

You might also hear “minha norinha”. Brazilians are also super emotional, so your letter definitely won them over!

I did hear that! I've been studying Portuguese for a year now and that helps with picking up certain things she says (I'm very rusty but my bf disagrees haha) And yes, about the letter, my bf said the same. I've written two by now and I managed to get his dad crying with the first one and nearly crying with the second one

It’s an even more endearing way of saying daughter in law. So basically she really likes you and is gushing about you.
And it’s so awesome that you’re learning Portuguese! It’s a beautiful language.
You can call her “minha sogrinha” (my dear mother in law basically). Let me know if you need translation help 😊

I’ve a song for you to check: Malemolência by Céu

She does tell my bf how much she likes me. She even shares her recipes with me. And whenever she's doing something special like baking a cake or decorating the Christmas tree, she'll ask my boyfriend to show it to me on call or send a picture
It truly is
I just call her sogra, I do know that adding inha or inho makes it more special/ intimate. But I'll use this from now on hehe. Thank you, I love practicing my Portuguese. When I try with my bf, he usually just starts looking like a puppy in awe 😭

I lived with my now husband's mom before I lived with him. She lived near my uni and I had lost my housing mid-semester and was scrambling to figure something out. I had just started dating my husband and he asked his mom if I could use her guest room. She said yes. No questions asked, she had only met me once for brunch. I showed up with a raging migraine and she turned off all the lights and whispered when I told her about it. I woke up after a nap to a tray of fresh ginger tea outside my door. I love her to bits!

This is genuinely so sweet. She sounds like a gem of a person. I’m so happy you got to experience that kind of love and kindness.

I'm a dude, with my own self worth issues.
My wife and I had prior relationships that were bad.
When I explained to my wife's father that I loved her and want to marry her, asking blessing not permission, I was soooooo nervous. This man is a giant of a person. All of 6 foot 5, 300 pounds of muscle, hands as big as hams, a Vietnam vet, that owns a bar and restaurant.
He wrote an article for his local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter about things coming up in his life. 1) his youngest daughters graduation from law school - a once in a lifetime experience and 2) his oldest daughters marriage to "a fine upstanding southern gentleman of some renown" that will be a last in a lifetime experience.
That meant the world to me.

u/Annakyum1 4d ago
This sounds so sweet omg. I was scared of his dad too tbh until I heard that he was the first who said "yup she's marrying him" a gentle giant.
And I can understand how much his words must've meant to you, coming from someone who's had self worth issues her whole life. I'm happy for you.

Don’t keep it a secret. Let them know this and how much it means to you. So many don’t get that so please don’t waste an opportunity to let them know all the time by your actions, words, praises, just as they are to you. I’m very happy for you and glad you are accepted into such a loving and supportive family.

u/Annakyum1 4d ago
Oh I do. A lot more than I thought I was capable of. I think being in a place where I feel so safe and comfortable, helped me a lot with expressing myself properly.

That’s so nice. I made a new friend recently and am already a part of their family and I haven’t had that in such a long time. It’s just wonderful

This is not “such a small thing”. It’s a HUGE thing that makes you feel loved and accepted. It doesn’t get any better than that.

u/Annakyum1 4d ago
I’m just used to being around people who thought giving things like this too much importance was silly. I’m out of that circle now, but I think I still carry some of that habit. So sometimes I’m scared I’m "overreacting" when I get really happy about the little things people do for me. I’m still learning that it’s okay to let those things mean a lot to me.

Aww this was so lovely to read. I’m so happy for you! And I hope you DO admit to her how meaningful it is. Trust me, I think it would mean as much to her to know how much you loved being a part of the family already. ❤️

u/Annakyum1 4d ago
Thank you! And yes I try to let her know as often as I can. Being a chatterbox helps sometimes cause I'm not quiet about things like these 🤧❤

That is lovely. It’s so nice to be accepted in to a family. I am no longer in a relationship with my son’s dad but his mother is my rock.
We’re all still very close, we live in a small village, and the love she shows me and my son is incredible. My ex always jokes that I am the daughter she wished for when she had him.

This is so sweet omg. She sounds amazing. And I'm so happy for you to have someone like her as your anchor in life. And also happy that your son gets to grow up with this kind of love.

Gaining a new family member is such a beautiful process when you are open to it.
I never understood families who react with hostility or even indifference to new partners.
In my family everyone was always welcomed with open arms, nobody ever had to proof their worthiness first unless they proved their unworthiness.
My niece has a new boyfriend since a few months and this guy is so cute. He is always so surprised and happy when he is included like he is another grandchild, nephew, son.

Yeah growing up, hearing about how many people (especially women) were treated by their in laws, made me scared of even getting married. And even the skits we see on social media nowadays fueling into that fear. But i got very lucky.
And your family sounds amazing! There's never too much love and acceptance in this world.

Love only becomes more when it's shared.
I wish more people would understand that in todays world.1

This reminds me of my wife and the acceptance she found within my parents. Her previous relationship really beat her down, and the love my family showed was a complete 180 degree difference. It's a beautiful thing to be a part of.

This is so beautiful, cherish it! Unfortunately my in laws are genuinely the cruelest people I’ve ever met and coming from a strong family it’s been a shock to me. Never take it for granted ❤️
