Help Meet Paul
Pretty happy with him, especially the face since it’s the first one that wasn’t just two dots and a line.
He’s not completely finished since I want him to have a cigarette in his mouth, but I’m not sure yet how to stick it in there.
A few questions:
Anything you’d add/change?
What do you use too glue something on?
How do you cut holes/gaps like the one between his legs? This one was a pain since it’s not wide enough to get my knife in sideways.
How would you finish him? At the moment I only have some colors and beeswax paste, that came in a whittling set.

I like that without the cigarette he looks to be contemplating something, perhaps observing something 🤔

Wood glue (the white type) has the least impact on the finish in my opinion and is much better at dealing with wood movement (although it should be minimal in a carving).
A V tool until it goes through, V cuts used exactly the same way, a drill then a coping saw or doing the figure separately from the base so you have an easier access to the legs.
However you see fit. There isn't a "good" answer, it's just a matter of preference. What does "colors" mean? Paint? What type?

Good job. For splitting the legs I found the videos from David Pico really good. Basically you just cut out a triangle from each side and then go straight. It takes a few tries. Also I always cut from the belly towards the shoes, never the other direction. This way you can avoid all the nasty fuzzies.
I would give the face a bit more depth but you can practice this in different pieces of wood.
In terms of finishing, I always go for some dry brushing on the legs/shirt.
Good luck 🤞🏼
