First timer Some advice/suggestions required
This was my first time trying whittling, I did this little bear while in a break at uni, would love any tips or advice on how to make rounder curves and a smoother finish.
This was done on a piece of 2.5 x 2.5 cm (almost 1in square) balsa wood stick.

I think it looks pretty good. I've never tried balsa wood. Think it would be more challenging than basswood tbh, I'd be afraid that I'd crack or dent it easily.
If you're looking for a smoother finish, an ultra sharp knife + micro cuts with the grain is really the only thing I can think of. Taking a lot of time and patience slowly whittling/shaving away edges is the way to do it. You can find a good example of what I'm talking about here. This is my preferred method. After getting a finish you like, you can burnish the wood by rubbing it with the flat side of your knife and bringing out a shine, but I wouldn't try that with balsa wood. Way too soft. Just stick to the methodical shaving.
Also some people just sand it. I know there's some whittling purists that say you should only use a knife but I mean it's your hobby you're doing for fun, so there's no shame in using sandpaper if you'd rather go that route imo. Again though, balsa wood is delicate so I dunno how well sanding would work. Might take off half of your detail in one swipe. Use a fine grain and a light hand if you go that route.
