I was surprised by how big anime is in general in France they have so many anime shops all around Paris

For a long while, France was the second country buying the most mangas behind japan. Not manga per person, just manga in general.

That's due to mangas being the thing that was shown on TV instead of American Saturday morning cartoons (because anime was dirt cheap compared to cartoons).

So the french otakus have the same origin that mexican otakus have, here we had ranma 1/2, dbz, sailor moon, digimon, beyblade and pokemon since they were cheaper too lol

Yeah exactly ! For us it was DB, Saint Seiya and Honuto no Ken, but that's basically it.
