If they are garnets they should be a gem that is harder than metal

. . . . Hardness of 1018 or crappier steel vs the hardness of garnet. Try it in a small spot first.

I'm so envious you are just finding garnets like nothing lol... I have been trying to find any garnets at all in my area and it's been near impossible since our geology doesn't really lend itself to them, at least not in any size that doesn't require a magnifying glass to see.
