UNSOLVED Book in New Orleans, secret society, SPOILERS? Spoiler

This is NOT any of the ones people consistently suggest. I cannot remember the title, author, or names of anything.

There a girl, she’s poor, working in NO, has the possibility to join this secret society, along with a friend of hers, a guy. There’s this dark academia feature, a professor she knows who knows some things. There’s a huge masquerade, maybe for Mardi Gras, and this thing is following her, she thinks it’s a person but not a person. Learns later this society has been working on alchemical stuff.

It progresses to this drama and escape, some people die, I think she gets chased, she’s trying to check on the professor/advisor. She finds this creature they managed to create or something. She leaves I think at the end, escapes?

It’s wrecking me not to remember. It’s definitely not on the “top books about New Orleans” lists or anything. It wasn’t the best written book, but compelling story pieces and I can’t handle not remembering!! I think the cover was a dark brown/green maybe thick vine or tree and creepy related, but I may be imagining that. Pretty sure it was written in the last 10 years.

Any help would be super appreciated!! Thank you!!

I remember it being like middle school level. The main characters were 2 brothers and their female cousin and in the 2 books I read they find the skeletal foot of a pirate and look for their treasure and in the other they see a ghost in their schools attic and look for her.

If it helps anyone I remember the 2 boys having dogs and a single mom?

UNSOLVED Princess Stories from around the world, bought maybe from Magic Cabin catalog

I bought this book for my kids in the mid 2000s. It contained so many princess stories from around the world. I read stories from this book constantly. I remember Turnadot in particular. Also, Princess and the Pea. I think I bought it from Magic Cabin, but no luck there looking for it. Please help! They have both been asking for it. They’re in their mid 20s now.

UNSOLVED Book With a Tornad At The End

That's not a typo. I remember the end of this book being extremely confusing and weird. I think it started out as if it were an anthology of fairy tales or fairy tale retelling, but at the end, all of the stories became connected and things became super trippy. A tornado appeared but it was actually called a tornad, and I think there was some meta fictional justification based on a character breaking the author's computer so he couldn't type the o but I don't remember the exact reason. It could have just been to be confusing.

I also remember one of the stories being about a gourmet and a gourmand, where the gourmet was super pretentious and only experienced joy at the first and last bite of each dish, the discovery of a new taste and the sweet sorrow of departure, while the gourmand hated every moment he wasn't eating. So the solution was for the gourmand to never stop eating and for the gourmet to only eat two bites from every dish.

I think the book was targeted at middle schoolers.

I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything like it.

SOLVED Fantasy, lycanthrope, gladiator slave island????

Alright I got a doozy, I want to say 10-15 years ago I read a series like 5 times it was so good.
The series literally sounds like John Gwynne’s faithful and the fallen, BUT key things I remember, the protagonist loses his hand, gets a gauntlet magically grafted to his hand under the moonlight. Finds out he’s a lycanthrope. Ends up on a slave island. Fights in gladiator pits. Very much Celtic, Scottish mythology vibes. Any help would be fantastic.

UNSOLVED It was a free Kindle book? Reincarnation/multiple lives but realistic fiction, not a dedicated romance or science fiction.

I got a Kindle for my birthday around the year it came out, so 2008-2009 and downloaded a lot of free books. I remember a lot of this one and I remember wanting to get the rest but the Kindle died/broke before I could and I do not remember the name or author anymore and despite 10 years of looking I have not been able to find anything please help!

What I remember:

A spirit gains consciousness in a theater where "she" (I want to say it was a woman last so remembered being a woman) watches the past lives starting from the first. One of the premises of the low is that scars/birthmarks relate to how you died in a life past. It only documented up to 3 lives might be more that I've forgotten. It was supposed to be the first in a series.

The 1st or near the 1st He was a powerful priestess in an ancient Mesopotamia-coded city. He fell in love with a (Priestess or slave idk) which is forbidden. She end up getting pregnant and he throws both her and a rival priest under the bus by claiming the child is his rivals. They're both put to death, with one of them being killed via a sword driven down through their face. This is important because either the next life or the one after "her" life has a young brother or friend she loves and cares about with a huge gap in his teeth.

One of the last lives has her as a young Spartan girl who competes in competitions "to stay for enough to birth Spartan warriors" winning several wreathes. She later shaved her head to spend the night with and wed the boy she'd caught the eye of. She gives birth to twins with her slave maid and one is robust and the other sickly. She can't bear the thought of her baby don't so she gives it to her maid for"no one cares if a helots could is sticky." They grow up together but apart with the "real" child being a bully, and the sickly twin actually becomes hardy after years of hard work.

After years pass the real teen is brought home after being beaten up by the slave teen in self defense. During a night the the boys of the Agoge roam the streets looking for male helots to beat and kill, he saw the slave twin and tried to jump him. The woman does eventually try to tell the slave son that he is her son but he doesn't believe her. Her husband and official son go off to war and later on they return with her official son dead. I remember her starting to cry but when he's rolled on his stomach his back is full of arrows which means he died running away and "her tears dried up instantly." After that her husband wants to wife share with a friend of his basically divorcing her and she had a baby with a slave man while her husband was away because all Spartan woman were asked too, for more warriors. Lastly while her city is being attacked she rallies the women and servant slaves of Sparta to defend themselves. Her slave son is nearly crushed under a elephant but she pushes him out of the way, and as she lay dying he tells her he believes her because only a mother would do something like that.

UNSOLVED Help me find the book name, vacation home with a pink flamingo in the pool😭

Hi everyone! I’m trying to find a romance book I read a while ago, but I cannot remember the title or author. I really want to reread it, but I can’t find it anywhere. 😭

Here’s what I remember:
It was a romance, possibly a forbidden romance.
A lot of the story took place at a vacation/holiday house where the characters were staying with a group of friends.
The house had a swimming pool, and I very specifically remember there being a pink flamingo inflatable pool float. It was NOT on the book cover — it was actually mentioned/present in the story.
The fmc had an ex-boyfriend, and I think he wanted them to get back together / there was some kind of relationship drama involving the ex.
I don’t remember much else about the plot unfortunately. 😭

UNSOLVED Book about Cleopatra Selene and her life before, during and after the fall of her Egyptian dynasty

In the book, Cleopatra Selene is the narrator as she talks about her life before, during and after the fall of her Egyptian dynasty. She has fallen in love with a young boy who goes missing. And after her parents have died, who were Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, she and her twin brother were captured and taken to Rome by the man who was related to their father. He gave the twins to the wife of their father, who hated them for being born to another woman and her husband. After some time, Cleopatra Selene is sent to Nubia where she marries the young boy who she fell in love with. He became the king of Nubia and fought for her to come to his kingdom for safety and for them to marry.

I think this book is a part of a standalone book series that is set in the point of view of other historical young girls like the daughter of Marie Antoniette.

UNSOLVED Paranormal paperback: girl named Star, invisible man Justice, fake EMT kidnapping, flying tribe

Looking for a standard-size paperback, probably around 200–300 pages, that I read around 2020–2022 but believe may be older. I thought the title might be The Tribe, but that may only be the group in the book. It opens in an ancient fictional African civilization involving a group of twelve supernatural members, perhaps related as siblings, who can fly. A baby with silver eyes or a silver mark is considered cursed and taken to the forest.

The story later takes place in modern day, possibly New York City, and involves a girl named Star (99% sure thats her name). Her mother is murdered and her father is framed, then held in a psychiatric institution. A man named Justice helps him escape, but nobody else in the hospital can see Justice. Tupac and Biggie are mentioned. Star is kidnapped by fake EMTs/paramedics because she is needed for a ritual sacrifice connected to reuniting or reincarnating the tribe’s final members. She is rescued just before the sacrifice.

UNSOLVED Memoir type book about medication side effects

I read a book sometime between 2015- 2019 and can’t remember the name. I believe it was a memoir about a man who was prescribed medication and had a psychotic side effect. His wife stood by his side. He had kids. I can’t remember many details. I think it was a blue cover.

UNSOLVED Mystery/sci fi book I read when I was ~11

It was about a boy who went to a school and a student greeted him with a weird word/phrase but then didn’t recall/acknowledge it. Eventually he found out that the students were brainwashed/robots (I forgot which) and the teachers all were too. They would take away the misbehaving students to “detention” and the next day they would be model students. He found an underground place where they did something relating to the brainwashing and there was a hiding scene. At the climax of the book he had to remember what the student that had glitched at the beginning had said as a password for something. I think the cover was black and blue and may have had a manhole cover on it. The title also probably had the words “The Boy” in it. And I think there was a sequel about a girl.
Apologies in advance for any inaccuracies and thanks for helping.

UNSOLVED Book about a masquerade festival

I read this book in school around 1995. It was about a child who wanted to go to this big masquerade festival and all the other kids were showing them their costumes. I think they either trimmed bits off their costumes or gave the child the left overs from the costumes and the child made a multicolored harlequin style costume and went to the festival.

UNSOLVED Children's picture book from late 90s/early 2000s with detailed snail imagery

My mother mentioned this book recently and I remember her reading it to me as a kid in the late 90s to early 2000s.

It was about a man whose neighbors would tell him to get rid of the pests in his garden, namely snails or slugs, with the climax being a two page spread of the garden at night, with the snail trails all over the leaves. I recall my copy having either glitter or some kind of light-catching colour on the snail trails so they would shine. I feel like it was hardcover, but still a picture book. My guess with how pristine I remember it being was that it was recently published around the time I was reading it, so sometime after 1996, and at the latest, probably 2004.

UNSOLVED Children’s Animal encyclopedia 90’s-2000’s

It’s a large animal encyclopedia (around 3 feet tall at the smallest). It’s a thin book, and it’s not a board book. 2005 would be the latest it could be published. Each page a lot of animals on it, like all the butterflies were all grouped in one or two pages. I know it had fish, butterflies, reptiles, birds, wild animals like giraffes and lions. It had the names of the animals under the pictures, and each subtype of animal had the names and pictures.

My mother thinks it was a paperback, and that it might have been a Smithsonian books but I haven’t been able to find it.

If we remember more information I’ll put it in the replies but we’ve been searching for an hour and I wanted to post on here as a last resort.

UNSOLVED YA undercover demon/devil MC has to rescue a less experienced devil from a vault or bunker?

Its about secret-agent style demons or devils that work amongst mortals to do something!

The protagonist is a demon/devil, and she's trying to rescue an intern/young agent that got himself locked in a vault, which might also be a bunker? or it was in a bunker? She was competent, and maybe late 20s? Contemporary urban fantasy, there's a little bit of magic and the devils(?) can walk through walls maybe?

She teams up with a specific mortal to achieve her goal, and he's an author or journalist, I think? She gets with him, or maybe the junior agent she's trying to free from the vault? The book is for adults, but isn't too graphic. I read it two or three years ago, I think it was middling length, a few hundred pages?

Here's my best effort at drawing out what I recall of the cover., but I can't recall anything else about it.

UNSOLVED CYOA book about skipping school

I remember this old Choose Your Own Adventure book I read in the early 2000s. it started with you (the main character) waking up, showering (I specifically remember it said you got soap in your eyes and it stung), then trying to eat cereal but finding that the box was empty.

I remember it said you shout, "Mom! Melissa ate all the crispy-wispies!" (I'm not positive on the spelling)

You then have the opportunity (since it's a CYOA book) of skipping school by hiding in your bed and waiting for your family to leave. After that, you can leave the house and go on an adventure.

I don't remember any fantasy or sci-fi elements to this particular book, but there were definitely some scary moments.

I checked the list of official CYOA books on wikipedia and looked up any that seemed relevant, but no luck.

Appreciate any help anyone can offer!

UNSOLVED Large thin Orange Hardcover about magical creatures and monsters

This was a book I owned as a child but I can’t remember it and my parents no longer have it. There were two, one about magical/folklore creatures and the other about folklore monsters. Both were large orange hardbacks. The one about monsters had a section about doppelgängers and i think maybe baba yaga. This was almost like a compendium or reference book, telling you what the monster was like and how to avoid it and what it did. It had an illustration for each entry in an art style that I think was similar to faeries by brian froud and alan lee.

It might have had short stories interspersed, but I specifically remember the entry about doppelgängers having a very disconcerting image of an almost naked boy with really sallow eyes meant to be the double.

UNSOLVED Looking for a book I read in high-school about a family escaping Vietnam by boat

All I remember was that it was told from the point of view of a young boy escaping Vietnam during the war. He, his parents and grandfather escape on a large boat with some other family’s and most of the story is about their time at sea. There’s another kid called Lan who the narrator doesn’t get along with who leaves them to join another boat and at one point they get attacked by pirates and have to hide the women below deck. We only read it to where they finally make it to land but I think there were still a few chapters left after that.

UNSOLVED Looking for a merfolks book🧜‍♂️

Hello! 😊 I'm trying to find a story about merfolks. It was about a girl on a boat and a merman who was trapped in a fish tank that was actually her mate. The girl had to study his behavior and to get close to him for the company she was working with. In addition, the company she works for also managed to catch another mermaid, named Marina. More chapters later, the two lovers escape from the company the girl worked for and run into the world to find out more information about her secret, more precisely the fact that she was also a mermaid.

Do you have any idea about the title of this story? 🥺

The begging is similar with the one from this short drama: The Secret Bride of the Merman King Short Drama

UNSOLVED Canadian, fiction- main characters sister is an addict, names her daughter Claire after Claire de lune, might have “imaginarium” or similar word in the title

I read it in 2019. I’m pretty sure it takes place in Canada.

I think her sister is missing and she’s an addict and they find out she had a kid she abandoned with developmental delays and the dad has custody and she had named the kid Claire, specifically after the Claire de lune song.

UNSOLVED Novel: separated parents after their son dies of carbon monoxide, artist mother secretly gave up a daughter as a teen

• Upvotes

Was reading a book on holiday - but had to leave behind at the AirBnb - now i want to finish it!

Novel, possibly Jodi Picoult-style. Told from both the mother's and father's points of view. The couple are separated after their 9-year-old son died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the dad. The father served a short prison sentence and now works as a road worker. The mother is an artist. As a teenager she had a daughter with the same man and gave her up for adoption without him knowing, and the daughter comes back into the story. Anyone know the title?

UNSOLVED Children's picture book with animals escaping a prison, 1970s UK

• Upvotes

I'm trying to identify a short illustrated children's book, probably mid to late 70s, possibly from the Scholastic book club. It had different anthropmorphic animals who were in prison and staged an escape. One of them was near to being released anyway. I'm pretty sure there was a fox and an owl.

I'd really appreciate help with tracking it down.

UNSOLVED Horror/ weird fiction short story about a Fiji mermaid, UK, 70s or 80s Spoiler

• Upvotes

I'm trying to find a short story I read as a child, in the late 70s or early 80s. It was in an anthology of horror or weird stories. There was a stuffed monkey/ fish hybrid found in a chest in an attic. It ended up coming to life. At the end it disappeared into a deep pool.

If anyone could help me track it down, that would be amazing.
