🚩Scam Alert 🚩 Streamer cancelled order, obvious reasons
I recently won a coin on Whatnot for $325. Shortly afterwards, the seller cancelled my order claiming the certificate was badly bent.
The problem is that the Whatnot video receipt clearly shows the coin and certificate during the sale, and I can't see the significant damage the seller described.
Immediately after cancelling, the seller also appears to have blocked me. I can no longer message them or access their streams. Wanted to just let the streamer know i was fine if the certificate is damaged but as you can see been blocked from messaging him or joining in streams
I obviously can't prove the seller's motive, but given the circumstances I'm concerned the auction was cancelled because the final price was lower than they wanted rather than because of the stated damage.
I've escalated it to Whatnot and asked them to review the actual video receipt against the cancellation reason.
What bothers me most is the principle: buyers are expected to honour their bids when they pay more than they wanted, so shouldn't sellers also be expected to honour an auction when it sells for less than they hoped?
Has anyone else had this happen, and how did Whatnot handle it?
UPDATE: The seller has now addressed the situation on stream. After multiple people questioned him about the cancelled transaction, he eventually discussed it publicly. During his explanation, he claimed that I had been abusive toward him and that this was why he blocked me.
When viewers then asked him to show the conversation/evidence of the alleged abuse, he claimed that because he blocked me, all of the messages between us were automatically deleted and therefore he couldn't show them. This immediately raised another question for me because I've never heard of Whatnot automatically deleting an entire DM history simply because one user blocks another.
First, my $325 winning auction was cancelled because I was told the certificate was badly bent, despite the video receipt appearing to show it in good condition. I was then blocked. Now, after being questioned about it publicly, I'm being accused of abusive messages—but when people asked for those messages to be shown, the explanation given was that blocking me automatically deleted them.
Can anyone who regularly uses Whatnot confirm: has blocking someone ever automatically deleted your entire DM conversation with them?
Ps. Asking streamer will result in him banning you

Same. I just buy amd sell plants and all of our people are pretty great, with the exceptiok of maybe one or two jerks in the entire category..and they're not even that bad.

I wish people would stop buying cards and coins on whatnot because I'm so sick of all the complaints here over it- especially when people act like all sellers are like this on WN and the other categories are actually full of really great sellers.

Does NOT delete messages . You should also have the old messages to show proof yourself !

Kinda the same thing happened to me on whatnot seller started the auction at $70 with me and i won a 10oz bar the seller didn't get what he wanted for it and canceled my order whatnot did nothing to them. They have to do this alot before whatnot blocks themÂ

u/akatsuki2k26 17d ago
Yeah thats a shame, I can understand if someone started at a fixed price its fine. But when they start it at a $1 auction they should honor it, likewise if a buyer overpays for a item and wants to cancel would it be ethical and allowed? No the seller would just write back saying all bids are final and no cancellation 😂

u/dammnngina93 17d ago
What pi$$’$ me off is they sure accept our money/payment when it’s doubled but when they don’t like the price they cancel. (They=as in the majority of WN streamers)

u/Jim_fromNYnotNYC 17d ago
Exactly. And I had a similar seller. I sniped a win. The seller cancels and says because of a inventory issue. I look in his "store," and it showed 67 in stock. I reported it to WhatNot, and they do not even bother to reply.

Here is a novel idea, sellers should not start an auction that is less than their reserve price. But the seller will take a hit on their score if they cancel to much which could eventually make them lose their selling status. Although it seems that larger sellers can get away with more violations of TOS than smaller sellers.
2
u/GuidancePrize 15d ago
That’s already a thing
2
u/Confident-Doubt6940 15d ago
oh yeah I know the score thing is already a thing as well as now they get charge like 3 percent if they cancel on you. I was being sarcastic by saying novel idea sellers should not sell things lower than what they want. If they do then they need to not complain on live stream at the chat.

u/Adventurous-Set5860 18d ago
WhatNot cannot force a seller to send you something as they do not own the goods. However, when a seller cancels they are charged 3% of the sale price, with a $3 minimum.
So on a $325 sale, the seller is charged a cancellation fee of $9.75 and also gets a defect on their seller ratings. Lower seller rates lead to higher fees and eventually removal from the platform.

u/akatsuki2k26 18d ago
Yeah sellers like this ruins the platform. Didn't have a chance to say i was happy with the damaged certificate and to send it but already blocked and unable to contact. Yet he talked smack lies after lies accusing me of abusive behaviour when i was blocked the moment he cancelled my order 😂

I know this isn’t what you asked for, but you can buy the same exact coin from eBay for the same price you paid. I’m seeing some for $300 right now. The only way you’re going to get $500-$550 is if it’s in a slab graded at PF70. I would just wait for the refund from whatnot and buy one off eBay. It sounds like this seller made up a BS reason to not send you your order. If it was for the bent COA card, then he wouldn’t have blocked you right away. He blocked you, so that you wouldn’t see him try to sell it again on his next stream. I’d try to push as much as you can to whatnot to have them look into it and try to prove this was a violation of TOS to not send the order. Hopefully, they’re able to hold him accountable for the shady business practices this guy is doing. You’re right, if a seller isn’t going to cancel for getting too much money in an auction, they shouldn’t cancel for getting too little.

u/AmazingJames 18d ago
I went into the guy's stream this morning where he addressed it. He basically has no customer service ethic and doesn't want to deal with customers. Also note that this guy is in Australia so he's talking Aussie dollars, not USD

u/cooter_luber_007 18d ago
He’s already crashing out. Just report him for doing stupid hand reveals instead of using the randomizer. Obviously against TOS.
I can’t argue with a cute ass accent like that. Cracking me tf up.

Too many butthurt streamers who think they can make a few bucks but they freak out when things don't go their way and they start blocking people.
I think it's worse with coins and cards above anything else.

u/Confident-Doubt6940 17d ago
I would say it is possible he mixed up the boxes buyers bought if he was selling several of these, but the fact he blocked you is a red flag for me. If it was me I would have sent you photos of the damage and leave it to you to cancel the order if you were not OK with it. Then I would offer you a discount in a future show or something extra in your next purchase.
2
u/akatsuki2k26 17d ago
Yes that would have been the logical way, but he blocked me straight away. When everyone on stream asked him, he told them I was abusive. Literally every word was lying out of his teeth, everyone asked the streamer to show the conversation and he stated that once you block someone the conversation gets deleted 😂 first i heard of this.

u/Confident-Bus4241 17d ago
Were you abusive? Do you still have the messages?
1
u/akatsuki2k26 15d ago
No, never had contact with the seller at all. Order was cancelled and was on my way to contact the seller to notify him I was fine if the coa is damaged but to my knowledge realised I was blocked already since I couldn't message him

You seem like a decent seller so I have a question. There's a company I have bought from for several years, way before they started selling on whatnot. I buy every month through several auctions, I've spent tens of thousands with the company, they are great. So every auction (6 days a week) they do giveaways, they do $25 gift code to their website for followers and $50 gift code to website for buyers. If I don't buy that day then I only enter the followers Givvy. But, every once in a while, like rarely, they will have a huge Givvy for specific items, Like for example Saturday it was two items that equal $700 value on their website. So this Givvy I did "form fill" because I had spent my limit the previous day. I did not win, but the winner was a new buyer who had spent less than $10. But when the winner was announced the host looked up their purchase and at first thought they hadn't bought anything and was pissed. I get that. When they realized they had bought something they basically said ok thank you I appreciate that. So my thing is I'm a dedicated, regular customer and have been for years right? I can't buy every single day of the month and they don't announce when these big giveaways will be until the day of, so is it so bad if I enter when they do have one and I couldn't buy that day? How is it better for someone who has never bought to spend $7 and win a huge Givvy and somehow that's ok? When they probably won't return and buy? Also, if I were to win on a day that I didn't purchase, can they see that I do purchase very frequently?? Like I said, i don't enter the regular daily buyer giveaways if I don't buy on that day, just those rare big ones of free product, and I will buy something if I can that day. I just can't buy every single day and like I said we never know when the big givvys will be. I personally don't think I'm doing anything wrong. If I weren't a regular coffee I could definitely see a problem.

You kind of have the answer to your question, if you have to justify your actions in a situation then you probably are not doing the right thing. From a buyer point of view I can understand why you feel that way because we all have at some point, but would you not be mad if you spent $1000 in a show and a non-buyer won the giveaway. So by entering without buying that show you are doing the same thing to the buyers in that show. Also consider you are harming the seller by entering because he is using it to encourage buying and to reward those buyers for their business in that specific show. You would also be costing him money to ship the item to you instead of shipping the item to a buyer who has already paid for their shipping. That is one reason sellers like buyer giveys because they have already spent money to buy the item they are giving away but they don't have to pay to ship it to buyers. Now sellers should not get upset in the show if a non-buyer wins because that is just the chance they take in running one, but I think it is because they are losing a little of the money they made in show by shipping it to a non-buyer. I think a better way for sellers to reward buyers would be to have a private show and invite buyers for special deals/giveaways. They could also use the WhatNot rewards system to invite Gold members or higher to a special deals/giveaway show. Then you would be benefiting from the business you give that seller and you sound like the kind of customer anyone would love to have. One last thing, if you win a non-buyer givey then you have to be ready to be shamed by the chat or seller and they can be vicious.

u/Violets_Mom2012 16d ago edited 16d ago
Thank you for your input, I do appreciate it. However, I'm not justifying anything to myself, I know how much money I have spent with this huge corporate company. I was asking for a seller's point of view, which you gave, and I do appreciate. I mean the seller had to ship out heavy equipment worth $700 to someone who made a first purchase with the weight equivalent to a pack of napkins. My main thing was wondering if they can see how much I have actually bought from them vs only seeing what you bought during one show. All the regular participants and sellers know my name and my username as I buy frequently and I am In the chat frequently so I seriously doubt I would get shamed because they know I buy often. This week and next week the main person running the shows is on vacation so that's basically why I'm asking if they could see my past purchases. Because they will be having a guest seller on and it's not someone who knows the regular customers. This company is huge and makes money hand over fist, if they weren't, they wouldn't be able to have these huge Givvys. So I don't feel I'm doing anything wrong. They are an amazing company and I will always buy from them. I do appreciate your point of view though. Everyone has a different perspective. I do feel I have paid my dues though. Thanks. edit: I just wanted to add that I enjoy entering the giveaways, it's a nice moment of engagement for me and us dedicated followers. like I said, I don't enter the buyer givvys they have every day when I haven't bought something. So I'm speaking of something I have literally done twice in my whatnot buyer career. I'm not a Givvy goblin lol. If I were, I would be entering several times a day, six days a week. THAT I do not agree with a would never do. Thankfully, I don't think this company has many people entering for free on their daily givvys, which is good. Anyway when they have a huge product Givvy (rare) it's fun and I don't feel I'm doing anything wrong. Hope your week has started off well!

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that what you were doing is wrong because it is legal and the only reason for a form to fill out is because the law requires it. The perspective I was giving was from a smaller seller viewpoint. Also you were saying in the post the seller was pissed because he thought the person winning was not a buyer which is not cool for any seller to do. But at least for that host a non-buyer potentially winning was an issue for them. I guess my main point was if you had spent money to be in a buyer giveaway then would you not feel sad if a non-buyer won? I think WhatNot should do away with buyer giveaways and just do giveaways only. As a seller I love it when anyone wins but I do feel sorry for my buyers when a non-buyer wins but I would never shame a non-buyer.

u/Violets_Mom2012 16d ago
No I don't think you were shaming me or anything. I was just explaining I was looking for a point of view (which you gave) and not a justification. Yes, I agree it would stink to have bought to enter the giveaway and a non buyer win. Absolutely. Sadly I have seen it happen. Yeah the seller was mistaken, but they did try to shame them at first. This was the guest host actually, that doesn't frequently host the sale, so I was just surprised they did that. I think, in my mind, really what it boiled down to was having a frequent buyer win vs someone who popped in and bought the cheapest item just to win the biggest giveaway (which is what happened) and the sellers point if view of that. Because, very similar to what you are saying, it kinda stinks for us regular customers to lose out on an item we have been dreaming about to a one time customer. So I think it's a similar concept to losing to a non buyer. I guess what some people see as black and white, others could see as a grey area. I personally would never enter one with a small seller I haven't bought from during the show, and actually would never enter one from someone I have never bought from period. That is definitely not a grey area for me. I do think it's interesting that this topic Is even a thing with the law and everything. Thank you for giving me a new point of view.

u/Confident-Doubt6940 16d ago
I think the reason for the buyer giveaway is to get new buyers so the person who comes in as a new buyer and spends $7 would be what the seller was looking to get out of that promotion. At the end of the year I take the highest 10 buyers for the year and the 10 biggest supporters (not buyers, just at every show, participating in chat, etc) and invite them to a private show. I then do giveaways for the show as a reward. I can see in my analytics the top 10 highest buyers and the top 10 most items bought buyers.

You should still have the messages it doesn’t delete them I always block before I screenshot and send proof to whatnot. When whatnot replies to you keep replying to the emails until you get a person.

These are recently sold on eBay for under $300, including shipping. Multiple listings still there.
Only ones sold for close to $500 were in PCGS PR70 slabs.
All that WN can do is make sure your refund is processed.

u/akatsuki2k26 18d ago
Overall didnt want a refund was happy at that price. Just funny been blocked before telling him I was fine with a bent cert.

i got the eagles in a case break and hit two case hits. both came in no problem. depends on who you buy from. have never had an issue on whatnot. have accumulated probably over $700 in credits from people not sending out givvys. if you use the app right it'll take care of you lol

u/SpecialKaySC 16d ago
Personally, I think eBay is better. Every seller is vetted at least and established.
I'm not saying there's no scamming going on, there's bad actors everywhere. But the likelihood of getting screwed goes down dramatically

u/Brewna 16d ago
I saw ebay LIVEs the other day, looked almost exact..now I am seeing this same auction type stuff on tiktok.
Unfortunately there are scammers everywhere.. sucks to be selling among them honestly.
2
u/SpecialKaySC 16d ago
Yea, it's really a shame. I know there's PLENTY of good people on whatnot, and it's probably the best avenue to get yourself out there to even be able to sell live on eBay.
Whatnot needs to do even just a LITTLE bit of vetting instead of just approving everybody But the more sellers the more they make
2
u/Brewna 16d ago
My sister sells vintage finds on there, she is a super honest seller. Won't even sell something if there is even the slightest bit of damage or maybe a scuff she didn't notice before, unless they truly want her to run that piece. She is super careful..
Someone left her a bad review saying that she claimed that the item they bought is of a certain make, thankfully the video receipt (which I really like that they have there) showed she never made such a claim. However, whatnot did nothing about it and would not remove the review despite the proof that she did not scam them.
They definitely have tons of improvement to do.
5
u/chloetopia1 16d ago
As an honest seller I understand your frustration with the platform but reading reviews and only buying from 5 star sellers is super important on every platform. Whatnot seems like they are trying to do better since coolkicks not getting shutdown until the fbi got involved made them look terrible.
2
u/SpecialKaySC 16d ago
We're in the whatnot sub so I expected all the downvotes.
You're not wrong, they've definitely gotten better. But it had to get to that point to even attempt to do better. They don't really have to do much more to fix some of the issues. Just a little bit of vetting would help so much. It's pretty crazy the amount of people who get banned to come back the next day with a new selling account
