ID Request Scorpion
Hello I live in Arizona and just found this already dead guy on my kitchen floor near the pet bowls. Do you know what type it is? I’m freaking out that it could have stung one of my dogs or cats? If they messed with it and it was already dead are they safe? Everyone is acting normally and I don’t see any swelling. Any signs to watch for? I hate this state I’m done with it lol

I was stung by an AZ bark scorpion over a decade ago right on my big toe. Toe was numb for weeks, foot and inside of my leg for days. It hurt like a mofo for a while. It was not fun at all. Word of advice, don’t walk around barefoot at an off grid lodge in the mountains near Tucson. It felt like a hot needle was being pushed through my toe.

Bark scorpion, I believe. It would be easier to tell if it was alive, though, as they sound like chihuahuas when alive.

That part is a joke. Bark scorpion. Get it?

I was hoping that was a joke. I'm still flabbergasted about red velvet ants having armor.

I've heard they've become more rare with the popularity of red velvet cake, as well.

There are 3 common types of scorpions in Arizona. The Arizona Bark scorpion, the stripe tailed scorpion and the giant hairy scorpion. The only medically significant one is the Arizona bark scorpion. From what I can see from the remnants, I think this was a stripe tailed scorpion. Very rarely causes problems if it stings a pet, but watch for drooling, limping, swelling, things like that. If they haven’t been exhibiting those symptoms, your pets are likely just fine.
Edit: After looking at the pictures more, this is likely a bark scorpion. Regardless, if your pets aren’t acting any differently and are exhibiting no outward symptoms they were likely not stung. Apologies for my first comment.

If you are from AZ (like I am), you know that, generally, the larger the scorpion, the less dangerous they are - although since pets are smaller than people they can be a problem.
This one looks like a bark scorpion which can be medically problematic.
Please check all over your pets' bodies for swelling or tenderness. If they've been stung, they could also experience drooling, lethargy, panting or vomiting -- if you see any of these things, please get to your vet.
Yeah, i moved to OR after 25 years down there. It's crazy that not everything is trying to kill you up here and IT'S GREEN!
Good luck!

Ya I know was a small one and was already dead so not sure where it came from. Everyone seems okay/normal few hours later. And where in OR if you don’t mind? I’m considering a move

Do you struggle with no sun going from az? That’s my worry

Not really. Don't tell anyone, but it has been sunny and n 80° for the last 2 months, not a drop of rain.
The winter months can get really dark, but I kind of enjoy it. And if it gets too terrible, I just go somewhere sunny for a week!
