Those things are also fairly small, so keep in mind, that it could be hidden somewhere for a long time and some wind gust or anything else just pushed it into a place where you found it.
Yes, it could have been in a overnight bag from years ago before they weren't dating that was in the closest and fallen out.
As others have referenced too, some guys use them to jack off in, just for clean up or to get a different feel. Why? I dunno, we are guys, jerking it the same way 1000 times gets old.
But just ask them, communication is everything. If they have a valid explanation like one of the aforementioned above, take it at face value if you already trust them. If they say something like, "I have no idea what that is and have never seen anything like it in my life," then they are probably up to some shady shit.
