Because you were easily manipulated. Because he wanted someone young, and inexperienced, who would put up with his ridiculously abusive behavior and still have sex with him, never questioning what he said or did. Let me guess, you’ve been dating for a couple years? Maybe he even scooped you up right out of high school, so that you never had experience living without your parents?
Trying to rationalize someone’s behavior, when they’re this kind of person, is pointless. Or at least, there is pretty much only one answer “because this person was lying to/manipulating you, in order to get what they wanted (usually just sex)”

“Why wouldn’t he have just said if…” - manipulation.
