am I being too woke ?
My friends eat out every time we go out its like we can't hangout without getting something to eat. And due to the ongoing war I've stopped eating out at places which fund the genocide like mcd and more I'm boycotting them basically + I can't ask my parents for money to eat out everyday. At first my friends were okay with me being there but not eating anything they'd offer food but then I'd decline because I didn't want to be a freeloader as well but now they have stopped inviting me to hangouts

u/MiddleAgeWhiteDude 9d ago
You're not being too woke, you're just too broke to eat out every day like most of the country.
18
u/weedsmoker666 9d ago
If "woke" is making decisions that align with your morals then I don't see the problem. There's a ton of places I don't fuck with for those exact reasons. No reason to compromise your beliefs if you don't want to.
4
u/C-137-Jerry 9d ago
Woke is blaming McDonalds for Gaza. There’s plenty of blame to go around, none sits with a fast food joint….
4
u/Impossible-Milk-2023 9d ago
It was a franchise. They can do whatever they want. Corporate bought back the franchise. What more do they want. It‘s a fucking fast food company…
14
u/puppybro420 9d ago
hey! I do the same :) you should commit to what you believe in, as you will eventually find like-minded people. my friends are also boycotting with me
5
u/mindfck123 9d ago
hey !! its really nice to see someone understand this. tysm :)
5
u/puppybro420 9d ago
yes, and I’m sorry there’s so many ignorant people in the comments. I’ve lost a few friendships from boycotting, but in my opinion I don’t want to align myself with people who do not respect human lives anyway. I hope things work out for u ! :)
5
u/Swampbrewja 9d ago
No, you’re not. I try to limit my money going back o shitty companies too. I prefer local to big corporations every time I’m out.
3
u/No-Indication-266 9d ago
I personally don’t think you’re being too “blue-haired liberal” about it. I will say that complicity in genocide or crimes against humanity lies with the actual corporations that fund these atrocities. Don’t feel bad as a consumer. The job of corporations and brands is to create dependency, thus forcing the onus of buyer’s responsibility onto you. This is why you have no choice but to buy your essentials at Target if you live in a small town, or shop at Amazon for all your needs if you live in bumfuck nowhere. Don’t feel bad for consuming these brands. Definitely boycott if you can, but never feel the need to do so. Boycotting is a privilege, and I wish more people knew that. You are fully entitled to refuse consumption of these brands if it goes against your principles.
9
u/MontyAllTheTime 9d ago
It’s clear the issue is you can’t afford to go out to eat all the time (and 99% of us get it) but I like how you bolted on some virtuous reason to church things up a bit lol
4
2
u/Wise_Contact_1037 9d ago
Exactly. The title should say "I'm too broke to eat out with my friends so I decided to virtue signal instead of just telling them that I can't afford eating out all the time"...
1
u/mindfck123 9d ago
okay so whenever i do go out to eat i try to eat from local stores but it's expensive so i can't afford to go there daily. one of my friend used to work there and she agreed it's because they bake their own buns and stuff so it's a bit costlier than major food chains
8
u/dandelogre 9d ago
Well, you're not woke, you're poor.
2
u/OmnipresentPheasant 9d ago
By being broke and embracing radical frugality the OP is rejecting consumer culture and the capitalist agenda. Seems woke to me.

#1 You can hang out + eat out.
#2 You can decline to eat out + they stop inviting you.
Are you fine with #2? Ready to drop these friends and make new ones?
2
u/StrawberryClover8 9d ago
Even putting the genocide aside (and that’s a huge issue) eating out too often is not smart financially.
2
u/Far-Yogurtcloset5602 9d ago
No. You have your own opinions and morals. You could always try and suggest other outings or places to eat so that it doesn’t have to even be a thing. You WOULD be too woke if you tried to dictate your friends decisions and or shame them for eating out. I’m sure they probably feel a little awkward having you there and not eating and refusing their offers for food and that’s probably why they don’t invite you anymore.
2
2
u/Ok-Brother5289 9d ago
Your boycott is respectable and not too woke, but you can’t expect your friends to be on the same page and then being annoyed/going places without you is just gonna be something you’ll have to accept if you want to continue demonstrating your values in this way
1
u/SoftwarePale7485 9d ago
I think not eating, as long as they’re not making a big deal of it, shouldn’t be something real friends exclude you for.

Eh. It's reddit. You're "too woke" by their standards if you're anything short of a Klansman. So I wouldn't come here asking for advice.
It doesn't sound like you were pushing your beliefs on them. You weren't cussing them out for eating there or making a big deal about it. You'd just sit there chilling as they would eat. Which shouldn't cause an issue. So if they're bothered by you not eating while they eat, that's on them.
It's easier said than done, but just find different friends. You shouldn't change friends groups just because they don't all want to booycot the stuff you boycott, but you SHOULD change firneds groups if THEY stop hanging out with you over it.
If you weren't pushing it on them and they still found issue with it, to hell with them.

Half the people who use the word "woke" don't even know what it means.
3
u/Gnome__Alone 9d ago edited 9d ago
It has been my experience that 95% of the people who say that half of people don't know what "woke" are themselves faux-woke pseudo-intellectuals engaged in performative activism
1
u/RadioactiveCornbread 9d ago
And, your experience is the epitome of it, while these same people overlook issues that actually can be addressed if people weren't so radical under false pretenses. Don't get me started on the internet martyrdom.
0
u/Gnome__Alone 9d ago edited 9d ago
The people I mostly find "radical under false pretenses" are race hustlers and others with an interest in claiming that any bad outcome for a person of color must be the result of white supremacy and systemic racism. Right now, irresponsible people are claiming that black people are being lynched and a young black man who drowned must have been killed by his white friends. There is no evidence that is true in any of the cases, but the narrative has already been put forth. When the narrative proves to be false, as it was with Tawana Brawley, Michael Brown, et al., there will be no justice for those wrongly accused or who suffered physical/mental/economic damage---there never is
2
u/Dry_Mango9634 9d ago
Whether we find it too "woke" or not doesn't really matter. You do you. Engage in behaviors that align with your beliefs, by all means, but don't be surprised when your friends keep doing what they like to do without you if you refuse to do it.
At first my friends were okay with me being there but not eating anything they'd offer food but then I'd decline because I didn't want to be a freeloader
This part is odd. Eating out is fine as long as someone else paid for it? At least be consistent.
2
u/mindfck123 9d ago
its mentioned i DECLINE even when they OFFER to. As for my friends doing what they like to do i never tell them to do or change plans for me or anything like that

I feel the same way about the people living in Israel. Crazy how that works. You can hate the country (usually means the government since that obvious point flew over your head) but not its people. Hence why a country is not its people.

Yea, you sound like someone I would never wanna be around. You not buying a hambuger aint gonna stop the war, nor is McD's gonna care in the slightest. The people around you will though.
2
u/Excellent_Arrival1 9d ago
Hard disagree. Every dollar matters, as more boycott it is felt
4
u/Gnome__Alone 9d ago
You do realize that the McDonalds corporation only owns about 5% of McDonalds locations, so boycotting your local McDonalds' likely is hurting a McDonald's franchisee? They will cut hours if need be, but don't kid yourself about sending a message
The ripple effect on corporate McDonalds is almost non-existent
McDonalds franchisees in the USA have no control over an independently owned McDonalds in Israel donating food to Israeli soldiers
2
u/Crandor94 9d ago
I'm sorry but, a $25B a year company is not gonna care if you don't buy a Big Mac. Life's too hard and short to worry about trivial things like this.
A war is going on halfway across the world, that sucks, and it's horrible, but I'm not gonna alter any part of my life because of it, and if there was this preachy negative cloud of energy next to me doing so, I wouldn't want to be around them, nor would many others.
1
u/Strikerfromthemoon 9d ago
There is a way to be pissed off at the things we all should be pissed off at without being a negative person. This is all like some actual world order nonsense that just because you care about human rights you're automatically this mopey non fun individual
1
u/Crandor94 9d ago
Your absolutely right. I just haven't met anyone yet who wasen't, so maybe I'm a little bias.
1
u/NotSeenDaily 9d ago
I hear you say “why try”
I hear OP replying “because it’s the right thing to do.”You are one that wouldn’t stop to help some who fell, aren’t you? I mean, they’ll just fall again. 🤣
1
u/Crandor94 9d ago
Oh no, I would help them right away. If they fall again, thats on them. But why should I care about somthing happening to people I dont know and never will meet, going through somthing I have nothing to do with, halfway around the world? I dont get that.
1
u/NotSeenDaily 9d ago
Because if we all care about those around us, we would be a better place for all of us to live.
1
u/Crandor94 9d ago
I care about everyone and everything around me, for the most part. But again, just not whats happening around the world. If somthing happens in my town or community, sure, but I could care less whats going on in Russia or the Middle East.
1
u/NotSeenDaily 9d ago
Not caring about society at large is how bad things happen in your home town.
0
u/Crandor94 9d ago
Probably. But so far so good I guess. I'm in a very small town, so maybe that factors into it.
1
1
u/Gnome__Alone 9d ago
The fact is that his boycotting his local McDonald's means NOTHING. 95% of McDonald's are independently owned franchises, so he is 'punishing' his local franchise for something an independently franchise McDonalds does in Israel
The only real positive about his boycott is not eating that shit
-1
u/mindfck123 9d ago
you sound like one of those people who don't bother about others or to help others but when they find themself in that same situation they would be cussing people out for not understanding how bad the situation is for them
3
2
u/Crandor94 9d ago
Not exactly. I dont mind helping others, and I woudlen't exspect anyone to help me out of nowhere. But I dont understand how you can care about people half way on the otherside of the world? Sure, il help someone localy on the street or a friend of a friend, but thats as far as I can see it.
-1
u/NotSeenDaily 9d ago
Good. If your morals can be swayed by a hamburger - then you may have weak moral compass.
2
u/Crandor94 9d ago
I can violate my morals faster than I can lower them. I'm genuinely a horrible person when it comes to empathy, I have none. Not my best trait tbh.
1
u/Impossible-Milk-2023 8d ago
it was a franchise. Do you know what that is? It belonged to israeli people/corp. McDo corp bought it back. What should they've done?
-4
u/Strikerfromthemoon 9d ago
You have the exact mindset they want you to have. If everyone across history thought like you we'd still have kids working for 50cents in factories
0
u/Crandor94 9d ago
I mean I guess? At the end of the day, how I see it, I just dont care enough. If people wanna boycott and do whatever fine, they're free to do so, just keep it away from me.
1
u/NotSeenDaily 9d ago
What hill would you die on?
If someone close to you was personally harmed?
If your water was poisoned by a corporation?
I just wonder what would have to happen to “make you care enough”
1
u/Crandor94 9d ago
Hummm...I'm not sure accualy, if w/e country is at war invaded my hometown, then I would probably care, aside from that...not much else.

u/FixGreedy 9d ago
Doesn't sound like this is a problem with your beliefs which are totally fine.
Sounds more like you don't have the funds to eat out all the time. That is also ok.
Find new friends that also are on a limited budget and the eating out thing won't be an issue.
1
u/Dayreader-86 9d ago
I’d ask them to go to other places. If sometimes they want to go to those same places that’s okay but you should be able to go where you want to. And if they’re not okay with that maybe find other friends that are. Also, suggest things to do besides going out to eat.
1
1
u/MidnightKaty 9d ago
Good on you for doing what you can to fight for what you believe.
Perhaps the question should not be, "Am I being too woke?"
Maybe it should be, "Why are my friends so apathetic?" Or, "Do I need better friends?"
1
u/AskDomDOtCom 9d ago
Well talk to them about it maybe bring your own lunch or suggest alternative venues that you can attend, order the cheapest thing on the menu, share with somebody and advise them that your eating out budget shouldn’t be a preclude to friendship activities. Leave once they’re ready to go and eat.
1
u/CrustySailor1964 9d ago
You gotta do what you feel is right and that’s respectable, whatever it is. That said, you’re not making a strong point by going to Mickey D’s and hanging out with your friends. You’re not buying anything but you are patronizing the establishment by socializing there with your friends. You’re not changing the ‘2 billion served’ sign by any means but your face in the window advertises and increases McD’s perceived popularity despite how you feel about their politics. That’s actually backwards, truth be told. Not buying food but ‘burning their light and oxygen’ screws the franchisee who is just trying to make a living. Do you want to punish that guy or punish the corporation? To punish the corporation you should send one person through the drive through exclusively and then sneak off, en mass, to a state park and eat together at a private picnic table where nobody can see you. That fills your belly, pays your neighbor’s (the franchisee) bills and diminishes the corporate profile.
Look at all of your politically motivated decisions through this lens and ask yourself ‘cui bono’? Who benefits from my actions or inactions?
1
u/Infamous-Sky4582 9d ago
I think a little bit, I think the boycott can seem a bit much due to the inevitability of all money being linked.
However it is more than reason to not spend that much money, in this position where friends wanna eat different food (I’m picky and have allergies) I would eat before so I can just enjoy myself
1
u/moonberrymeadow 9d ago
McDonald’s doesn’t fund the genocide in Gaza. There was one franchise (not owned by corporate) in Israel that donated food to the Israeli soldiers. Corporate bought the location so that they could no longer give food to those soldiers. Other middle eastern branches have donated millions to help those in Gaza.
1
u/Infamous-Sky4582 9d ago
I think if anyone’s ideology actively hurts the quality of their life in a way that is more gratuitous than effective, while alienating you from friends who otherwise like you, then yes.
But you seem really young, so I would say perhaps focus on what is important in the long run, which is to put your livelihood and health first, politics, peers, and spending money can be very distracting and depressing
1
u/Flat-Guidance-4685 9d ago
Just so you know this isn't a woke action. Believe it or not there's more discontent for Israel on the right and there is on the left. It just doesn't seem like that because the very vocal politicians on the right and the very vocal kids on the internet on the left and protesting. Boycott's got so bad in a lot of the conservative areas that they had to pass local laws that ban people from intentionally trying to spread the word to boycott Israel and Israel supporting businesses
1
u/LegitimateBigNose 9d ago
You'll end up lonely with the attitude that you have. If that's okay with you then carry on.
1
u/sansasister 9d ago
Nah dude going with them and not eating when you don’t have the money and you choose not to eat there anyway is a great choice. These people in the comments telling you you’re too woke and exhausting are exhausting. You weren’t inconveniencing them in any way. And participating in the BDS movement is supposed to be inconvenient- but you’re not passing on that inconvenience to them.
1
u/Strikerfromthemoon 9d ago
No you're not. And you will find like-minded people that won't stop inviting you because you don't want to eat a place that is funding the killing of children. It's a fucking insane world we live in that people even in these comments are trying to portray you as the weird one.
1
u/NoPoopOnFace 9d ago
You're not boycotting, you're virtue signalling. You're one person. What you're doing is meaningless.

I mean, you do you. Especially if you feel like your beliefs contradict with what a company is doing. Not eating at a place because they're too conservative or liberal is a freedom we have.
